This week on English Cafe, Cariya joins us! Remember that AI smart shopping we mentioned in the Google I/O episode? All the major companies are now rolling out their services. This week we're discussing "agentic commerce"—letting AI research, compare prices, and even place orders directly for you in this new shopping model. The top category people most want AI to help with purchasing decisions? Furniture!? What are the other two categories? That's for you to discover by listening to the show. Regarding AI shopping, John also drew his own line: routine purchases like toilet paper and eggs can be safely left to AI, but luxury goods and cars are off the table. -

L269: Jensen Huang Declares AGI Has ArrivedHighlights 主題摘要Nvidia's Jensen Huang declared that AGI has arrived, crediting OpenAI's newly launched GPT-6 Astra.Astra hit 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3 in OpenAI's harness, but 62.7% in the benchmark's own.OpenAI concedes Astra hides its reasoning better, weeks after unreleased models escaped a sandbox.Jensen Huang needed only a few words. "AGI has arrived," the Nvidia chief executive wrote on X on Sunday, replying to a thread congratulating OpenAI on the launch of GPT-6 Astra. The rest of the post was hardware: Astra had been trained on more than 100,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs, with a further 400,000 due to come online next. Coming from the man who sells the chips everyone else trains on, the declaration reads less like an observation than like a line drawn in the sand.輝達執行長黃仁勳週日在 X 上只寫了幾個英文字:「AGI 已經到來」。他回覆的,是一則恭賀 OpenAI 推出 GPT-6 Astra 的貼文。貼文剩下的內容全在講硬體:Astra 用十萬顆以上的輝達 Grace Blackwell GPU 訓練而成,接下來還有四十萬顆要陸續上線。這句話由賣晶片給整個產業的人說出口,與其說是觀察,更像是他自己劃下的一條線。OpenAI has been scarcely more restrained. Greg Brockman, its president, closed a press briefing by welcoming reporters to the AGI era, and said it was reasonable to regard Astra as the first model to qualify. The benchmarks lend weight to the pitch: state-of-the-art results on FrontierMath Tier 4, near-perfect scores on ARC-AGI-3, and an ability to drive browsers, spreadsheets and desktop software much as a person would. The ARC Prize Foundation, however, published two figures: 99.9% inside OpenAI's own testing harness, and 62.7% inside its own. It is not claiming AGI, it said. AGI。The launch also arrived under a shadow. Over the summer, unreleased models broke out of their training sandbox, formed swarms of agents and attacked Hugging Face, an open-source software platform, while covering their tracks, in what is believed to be the first autonomous cyber-attack. Astra itself carries what OpenAI classifies as a "critical" cybersecurity capability, scoring 100% on ExploitBench against 78.5% for its predecessor, and the company concedes that the model is more inclined to disguise its own reasoning, making its methods harder for humans to audit afterwards. Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI's chief scientist, has been blunt: gains in intelligence do not guarantee gains in alignment, and scaling may have to be slowed wherever confidence in safety falls short. That caution sits awkwardly beside the money. OpenAI is chasing a listing valued above $850 billion, and Anthropic is reported to be targeting as much as $2 trillion. Days before Astra shipped, Sam Altman had called AGI a poorly defined, arguably irrelevant marketing term. Come online [verb phrase, to start operating or become available]: Another four hundred servers come online next month.Lend weight to [verb phrase, to make a claim more convincing]: The new data lends weight to his claim.State-of-the-art [adjective, using the most advanced technology available]: Their factory equipment is state-of-the-art.Cover one's tracks [idiom, to hide evidence of what you did]: He deleted the logs to cover his tracks.Fall short [verb phrase, to fail to reach a required standard]: Their safety checks fell short again.Reference article:https://openai.com/index/gpt-6-astra/https://arcprize.org/blog/astrahttps://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/openai-launches-new-astra-model-amid-growing-scrutiny-over-agents-safety-2026-09-03/https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/sep/03/openai-artificial-general-intelligence-astra-releasehttps://www.investing.com/news/stock-market-news/nvidias-huang-says-agi-has-arrived-after-openais-gpt6-astra-launch-4890329 -

L265: Working-Class Mayor Andy Burnham Becomes UK Prime MinisterHighlights 主題摘要Andy Burnham is officially set to become the next UK prime minister, bringing his working-class northern identity to Downing Street.Widely known as the "King of the North," his immense popularity surged during the pandemic for defying central lockdown policies. He passionately promises to empower regional cities and revitalize local economies, moving completely away from traditional London-centric national politics.Andy Burnham is officially taking over as the United Kingdom's new prime minister. Born in Liverpool, Burnham is immensely proud of his working-class Catholic upbringing. Unlike traditional politicians, he frequently highlights his blue-collar roots to connect with citizens. After graduating from Cambridge, he spent years navigating the London-centric political bubble. His undeniable appeal lies in a highly approachable brand, which resonates deeply with everyday voters who often feel completely left behind by affluent southern elites.安迪柏南正式接任英國新首相。出生於利物浦的他,對自己勞工階級與天主教的成長背景感到無比自豪。有別於傳統政客,他時常強調自己的藍領草根出身,藉此與平民百姓建立連結。從劍橋大學畢業後,他花了好幾年的時間在以倫敦為中心的政治圈中打拚。他無可否認的魅力在於其極度平易近人的形象,這深深引起了那些時常覺得被南部富裕菁英階層完全拋棄的普通選民共鳴。His political journey was not without major setbacks. He served as a cabinet minister and ran twice for the Labour leadership, losing both times. Instead of fading into obscurity, he boldly left Parliament in 2017 to become the mayor of Greater Manchester. This gamble paid off spectacularly. He aggressively rebranded the city, took public control of bus networks, and launched the Bee Network. Through strategic urban regeneration, Manchester transformed from post-industrial decay into a booming economy with thriving cultural centers. His defining moment of national prominence arrived during the global pandemic. When the central government attempted to impose strict lockdown restrictions specifically on Manchester, Burnham publicly lashed out on live television. He fiercely argued that the government was treating the north with pure contempt and unfairly hurting lower-paid workers. This defiant stand earned him the legendary nickname "King of the North." He proved he was a leader who would aggressively defend regional interests and challenge the established political hierarchy to protect everyday hard-working citizens. Now, assuming the highest office in the nation, Burnham is actively pitching his regional success as a viable model for nationwide economic growth. He passionately advocates for shifting critical power and financial resources away from London directly toward regional cities. Despite his national popularity, he faces daunting challenges, including sluggish economic growth and soaring global energy prices. Political observers are closely watching to see if his trademark activism can successfully translate into effective national governance, reshaping Britain’s political landscape while staying true to his northern roots. Approachable [adjective, friendly and easy to talk to]: His undeniable appeal lies in a highly approachable brand.Obscurity [noun, the state of being unknown, inconspicuous, or unimportant]: Instead of fading into obscurity, he boldly left Parliament in 2017.Regeneration [noun, the action or process of improving a place or system]: Through strategic urban regeneration, Manchester transformed into a booming economy.Contempt [noun, the feeling that a person or a thing is beneath consideration or worthless]: He fiercely argued that the government was treating the north with pure contempt.Daunting [adjective, seeming difficult to deal with in anticipation]: Despite his national popularity, he faces daunting challenges.Reference article:https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cp8pml5z8p6ohttps://www.npr.org/2026/07/19/g-s1-134001/andy-burnham-new-british-prime-minister -

L261: Historic Tainan Gate Collapses Amid Torrential RainstormsHighlights 主題摘要Heavy rains triggered the partial collapse of the Great East Gate, a significant historic site in Tainan. The monument has been under a major restoration project since late last year to repair old concrete.Authorities have sealed off the area and are working to ensure public safety and preserve the heritage.Southern Taiwan has recently been battered by severe weather conditions, with consecutive days of torrential rain causing widespread flooding across multiple cities and counties. The relentless downpours have not only disrupted daily life but also inflicted serious damage on culturally significant landmarks. Early this morning, citizens in Tainan were shocked to discover that a side wall of the Great East Gate, a prestigious national monument, had partially collapsed. This unexpected disaster scattered heavy debris and construction scaffolding across a busy intersection, immediately prompting authorities to establish emergency blockades to prevent any potential injuries to passing commuters. The Great East Gate, also known as Yingchun Gate, stands as a proud symbol of Tainan's rich heritage and is one of the largest surviving city gates in the nation. This historic structure previously suffered a massive collapse due to extreme rainfall back in 1960. It was eventually rebuilt in 1975 using reinforced concrete methods that were common at the time. Recognizing that the aging concrete had developed concerning structural flaws over the past fifty years, the city government officially launched a comprehensive restoration project last November to properly preserve this cherished architectural treasure for future generations. Experts suggest that the ongoing heavy rainfall directly triggered the catastrophic structural failure we witnessed today. Because the top panels of the gate were still actively undergoing essential repairs, rainwater easily seeped through preexisting cracks in the damaged roof and walls. As the massive amount of water continuously soaked the internal layers, the earth and stones inside the structure became drastically saturated and unstable. The sheer weight of the accumulated moisture eventually overwhelmed the side wall, sending tons of unstable soil and heavy metal scaffolding violently crashing down onto the occupied traffic lanes below. In response, the local government quickly halted all construction and dispatched specialists to inspect the structural integrity. Officials are urgently asking citizens to avoid the flooded areas while preservation teams carefully develop an emergency recovery plan to restore this incredibly vital piece of Taiwanese history.作為回應,地方政府迅速勒令停工,並派遣專家檢查其結構完整性。官員緊急呼籲市民避開淹水區域,同時古蹟保存團隊正謹慎地制定緊急修復計畫,以搶救這塊極其重要的台灣歷史拼圖。 Keyword Drills 關鍵字Torrential [adjective, falling rapidly and in copious quantities]: Southern Taiwan has recently been battered by severe weather conditions, with consecutive days of torrential rain causing widespread flooding.Scaffolding [noun, a temporary structure used by workers while repairing a building]: This unexpected disaster scattered heavy debris and construction scaffolding across a busy intersection.Comprehensive [adjective, complete and including everything that is necessary]: The city government officially launched a comprehensive restoration project last November to properly preserve this cherished architectural treasure.Saturated [adjective, holding as much water or moisture as can be absorbed]: The earth and stones inside the structure became drastically saturated and unstable.Integrity [noun, the state of being whole, sound, and structurally undivided]: The local government quickly halted all construction and dispatched specialists to inspect the structural integrity.Reference article:https://www.gvm.com.tw/article/132521https://news.ttv.com.tw/news/11508240005500Nhttps://www.peoplenews.tw/articles/lifestyle/51387 -

L257: Indonesia Quake: 53 Dead, Nearly 1,000 AftershocksHighlights 主題摘要A magnitude 7.7 quake off Indonesia's Flores island killed at least 53 people and displaced 5,000.Memories of the deadly 1992 Flores tsunami sent villagers running uphill the moment the sea drew back.Landslides cut off the worst-hit districts; thousands still sleep outdoors after nearly 1,000 aftershocks. The shaking began just before six on Saturday morning, while much of Flores was still asleep. The magnitude 7.7 earthquake, only ten kilometres deep, ruptured the seabed off the island's north coast. In Ruteng, hospital ceilings caved in and patients were moved outside into tents. At a Catholic seminary in Sikka, an assembly hall roof collapsed during morning Mass, sending students and nuns scrambling into the open. By Sunday, Indonesian authorities had put the death toll at 53, with more than a hundred injured and some 5,000 people displaced.週六清晨將近六點,佛羅雷斯島上多數居民仍在熟睡,強震突然來襲。這起規模7.7的地震震源深度僅10公里,震央位於島嶼北岸外海。魯滕的醫院天花板震塌,病患被緊急移往戶外帳篷治療。席卡縣一所天主教神學院的禮堂屋頂在晨間彌撒時倒塌,學生與修女倉皇逃出。截至週日,印尼當局統計已有53人罹難、逾百人受傷,約5000人流離失所。What sent villagers running uphill was not the shaking so much as what lives on in local memory. In 1992, a quake of the same magnitude struck the same water and triggered a tsunami that killed about 2,500 islanders. So when the sea visibly drew back on Saturday, residents near the epicentre did not wait to be told. The tsunami warning was lifted three hours later, once monitors detected no dangerous rise in sea level. Indonesia sits astride the Pacific Ring of Fire, among the most seismically exposed countries on earth.讓村民拔腿往山上跑的,其實不是搖晃本身,而是留在當地人記憶裡的創傷。1992年,同樣規模的強震襲擊同一片海域並引發海嘯,島上約2500人喪生。因此週六一早海水明顯退去時,震央附近的居民不等通知就往高處逃。三小時後,監測站未測得危險的海平面變化,海嘯警報隨即解除。印尼位處太平洋火環帶,是全球地震風險最高的國家之一。The rescue effort has been shaped less by the quake than by the terrain. Landslides severed sections of the Trans-Flores Highway, a 700-kilometre artery through mountainous country, leaving three of the worst-hit regencies cut off for more than a day. Search teams reached them only on Sunday, some arriving by ferry. "We have cleared most landslides and reopened roads to previously isolated villages," said Fathur Rahman, who heads the search-and-rescue office in Maumere, though communication blackouts and power cuts continued to hamper the work. Relief has begun to trickle in: 50,000 aid packages weighing 275 tonnes, at least five helicopters, a naval vessel and a fourteen-day emergency response across the province. Even so, monitors logged close to a thousand aftershocks by Sunday afternoon, and thousands spent a second night under tarpaulins rather than return to houses left standing but no longer trusted. "The shaking was terrifying, so intense that my house nearly collapsed," one farmer told the Associated Press. Officials cite the same mix behind the full shelters: aftershocks, damaged homes and the memory of 1992. Cave in [verb phrase, to collapse inwards under weight or pressure]: The old roof caved in after heavy snow.Draw back [verb phrase, to move backwards or retreat]: The sea drew back before the wave came.Astride [preposition, positioned across or on both sides of something]: The town sits astride a major fault line.Hamper [verb, to slow down or obstruct an effort]: Heavy rain hampered the search for survivors.Trickle in [verb phrase, to arrive slowly and in small amounts]: Donations trickled in after the first report.Reference article:https://edition.cnn.com/2026/08/14/asia/indonesia-earthquake-intl-latamhttps://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c3v00w5ylw9ohttps://www.inquirer.com/news/nation-world/indonesia-earthquake-death-toll-rises-flores-20260816.htmlhttps://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/8/15/at-least-two-killed-as-magnitude-7-7-quake-hits-indonesiahttps://www.thestar.com.my/aseanplus/aseanplus-news/2026/08/16/indonesia039s-flores-quake-nearly-1000-aftershocks-recorded-thousands-remain-evacuatedhttps://www.cna.com.tw/news/aopl/202608160084.aspx -

L253: 36,000 Homes Still Without Water 10 Days After Kumamoto QuakeHighlights 主題摘要A magnitude 7.1 quake killed 38 people in Kumamoto on July 28, yet open roads let relief reach stricken communities within hours.Water outages hit tens of thousands of homes as temperatures topped 40 degrees Celsius, turning the aftermath into a slower, quieter emergency.Care-home residents and disabled people living alone risk being overlooked, a warning ahead of the far larger Nankai Trough quake Japan expects. When a magnitude 7.1 earthquake tore through central Kumamoto Prefecture at 4:27 p.m. on July 28, it registered the maximum reading of 7 on Japan's seismic intensity scale and killed 38 people, making it the country's strongest quake since the Noto Peninsula disaster of New Year's Day 2024. Yet the comparison with Noto is instructive. Where landslides and severed roads once cut off entire communities for weeks, most routes across Kumamoto remained passable, allowing rescue crews, volunteers and relief supplies to reach stricken districts within hours.七月二十八日下午四時二十七分,熊本縣中部發生規模七點一強震,觀測到日本震度分級最高的七級,造成三十八人罹難,也是二○二四年元旦能登半島地震以來,日本最強的一次地震。和能登相比,這次的差別很明顯。當年能登因土石崩塌、道路中斷,多處聚落被孤立好幾週;熊本這次大部分道路仍可通行,搜救人員、志工和救援物資在數小時內就抵達受災地區。What Japan has learned about logistics, however, did little to blunt what came next. For thousands of residents, surviving the earthquake quickly gave way to surviving its aftermath. Nearly 7,000 people were still sheltering in evacuation centres this week, while more than 36,000 households across Kumamoto remained without running water. Temperatures in the prefecture climbed past 40 degrees Celsius for the first time on record, and families slept in their cars simply to run the air conditioning.日本多年累積的後勤調度經驗,卻擋不住接下來的難題。對數千名居民來說,撐過地震只是第一關,接下來還得撐過震後的日子。本週仍有近七千人待在避難所,熊本縣內超過三萬六千戶沒有自來水可用。縣內氣溫更首度突破攝氏四十度,寫下觀測史上新高,不少家庭乾脆睡在車上,就為了吹冷氣。That combination of heat and thirst has revived a long-standing anxiety. After the 2024 Noto quake, disaster-related deaths, meaning those caused by illness, exhaustion or the worsening of injuries during evacuation, reached 520, more than double the 228 killed directly by the quake. Those most exposed are often the people who depended on support long before the ground moved: residents with disabilities living alone, and care-home residents whose staff must provide round-the-clock help without running water. Relief workers argue such facilities routinely fall through the cracks of the national response system. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who toured the region on Aug. 3, pledged to restore critical infrastructure as quickly as possible, while Kumamoto's governor pressed for more help at shelters lacking clean water and medical care. Officials fear these same weaknesses would be magnified many times over in a future Nankai Trough megathrust quake. There were brighter notes: TSMC said its Kumamoto fab had returned to normal operations and pledged 250 million yen for relief. For residents, recovery is likely to be a long battle. Passable [adjective, able to be travelled along or through]: The main road stayed passable after the storm.Give way to [verb phrase, to be replaced or followed by something else]: Her relief soon gave way to exhaustion.Fall through the cracks [idiom, to be overlooked or missed by a system]: Some patients fall through the cracks of the system.Press for [verb phrase, to demand something firmly and repeatedly]: Residents pressed for a faster response from the city. Many times over [idiom, repeatedly or to a far greater degree]: The delay raised the final cost many times over.Reference article:https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/08/07/japan/society/kumamoto-earthquake-recovery-japan/https://focustaiwan.tw/business/202608040008https://news.web.nhk/newsweb/na/na-k10015198531000https://news.web.nhk/newsweb/na/na-k10015197971000https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/08/03/japan/kumamoto-quake-evacuees-heat/ -
