Proverbs 28:1 KJV *- bold: to trust or be sure or secure; certain; assured. Emotionally secure: free from care or anxiety. *- Why are lions bold? Is it because they know their own strength, wisdom, speed, claws, or teeth? *- Lions are bold because they are apex predators—at the top of the food chain—with few natural predators in their environment. *- So, are the righteous bold as a lion because they have no predators? Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 1 Peter 5:8 KJV *- We have predators, yet we can still be bold as lions even when our predators come against us as lions. Don't Get Caught When Lions Fight 6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the Lord hath not done it? *- evil: disaster, hardship, or punishment (such as war or famine), not moral sin or wickedness committed by God. 7 Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. *- God gives people fair warning: He does not delight in catching people by surprise with sudden disaster. He gives people a chance to hear the truth and change their ways—tying prophetic proclamation to imminent peril. 8 The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord God hath spoken, who can but prophesy? Amos 3:6-8 KJV *- Just as fear naturally follows a lion's roar, prophecy follows when God speaks. Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Philippians 2:12 KJV *- work out: to do that from which something results; of man: make every effort to obtain salvation. (Here, the verb describes the believer’s responsible cooperation with God’s grace.) *- own: self *- salvation: The Christian sense of salvation/deliverance—the saving work of God brought to its intended outcome in the believer’s life. *- Paul is not saying: “Work for your salvation.” *- He is saying, in effect: “Carry your salvation through to its proper result.” *- And the very next verse prevents us from interpreting this as self-produced salvation: For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Philippians 2:13 KJV *- There are two workings: *- In verse 12, we work out. *- In verse 13, God works in. *- God’s inward working produces a willingness and a doing. As believers, we’re responsible for actively carrying out His divine work in obedient living because genuine obedience is the fruit of what God implanted. Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Philippians 2:12 KJV *- fear: a profound respect and seriousness toward God that makes a person deeply concerned about faithfully obeying Him. *- It is also known as reverential fear. *- Such godly fear expresses humility, gratitude for redemption, and readiness to obey. *- trembling: used to describe the anxiety of those who completely distrust their ability to meet all of God’s requirements, but will unwaveringly do their utmost to fulfill their duty. *- Verse 12: I don't trust my ability to fulfill everything God requires. *- Verse 13: But I can trust God working in me, producing both the desire and the ability to do what pleases Him. *- So “trembling” isn't primarily trembling because God might destroy you. It is the profound realization: “I take my salvation so seriously that I don't trust myself to get it right without God.” *- Those who do not spend the needful time in prayer, reading and living the Word of God, congregating, and faithfully fellowshipping, as the early believers did, cannot allow God to fully work His salvation in their lives. Selfishness leads them to do things their own way while deceiving themselves into believing that God accepts their ways—living without fear and trembling. Lifework Assignment: *- Salvation is also defined as God’s deliverance of us from sin and its consequences, which we are responsible for carrying through to its intended completion in our lives—pleasing God. Therefore, let us present to God lives that remain sensitive to all He is working in us, with unwavering faithfulness to all He expects of us. Expected Behavior: *- Work out your own salvation—actively carrying God’s saving work within you into obedient action until it accomplishes its intended result—assured that He’s working in you the will to do and the ability to do all that pleases Him.

Step only when God orders which steps you should take. Peter didn’t step until Jesus told him to. The Holy Spirit teaches you to hear and obey. Deuteronomy 6:16 KJV *- tempting here warns against demanding proof of God’s presence or faithfulness, particularly when challenging Him out of distrust or selfishness. And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, Is the Lord among us, or not? Exodus 17:7 KJV *- tempted: testing or trying 8 Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness: 9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work. Psalm 95:8-9 KJV *- My work: deed, thing done in judgment *- A hardened heart is selfish and distrustful. It wants God to act for its own benefit, forcing Him to prove Himself to justify its faith—rather than desiring His works to bring Him glory, honor, and praise, as one with true faith does. Lifework Assignment: *- Avoid misplaced demands: Refusing to trust God’s Word, and instead demanding a specific sign ("I’ll believe God if He gives me this job.") *- Avoid presumption vs. faith: Unlike acts of faith—testing or tempting God is taking sinful risks or acting carelessly, expecting God to fix the consequences, or else you’ll express your disapproval. Pt. 3 The Lord’s Joy 7 Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah—the Levites—helped the people to understand the Law, and the people [remained] in their place. 8 So they read from the Book of the Law of God distinctly, faithfully amplifying and giving the sense so that [the people] understood the reading. 9 And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all of them, This day is holy to the Lord your God; mourn not nor weep. Psalm 51:17 AMPC *- despise: raise the head loftily and disdainfully. For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 2 Corinthians 7:10 KJV *- Paul distinguishes productive remorse (aligned with God’s will) from destructive, continual grief (dominated by self-pity and despair). *- God does not require prolonged sorrow after being truly sorrowful and repentant over our sins. Then [Ezra] told them, Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet drink, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. And be not grieved and depressed, for the joy of the Lord is your strength and stronghold. Nehemiah 8:10 AMPC *- After God banished them from their home country for persistent rebellion, idolatry, refusal to return to Him, ignoring correction, etc., for decades, they were prone to mourning over past unfaithfulness. Then [Ezra] told them, Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet drink, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. And be not grieved and depressed, for the joy of the Lord is your strength and stronghold. Nehemiah 8:10 AMPC *- joy: rejoice, gladness *- strength: something turned to for safety or assistance; a place built to withstand attack; the word consistently points to what can be relied upon when danger threatens. *- The joy of the Lord becomes your place of protection, stability, and support. Lifework Assignment: *- Remember: *- The joy of the Lord is your stronghold—a place built to withstand attack. *- Instead of having fear and feeling threatened, have joy and know you’re safe in Jesus! *- Stop wanting to resign because of how bad you feel, and want to have joy because of how good God is! *- Have joy and celebrate! They express joy by celebrating their righteous lives and service to God through outings filled with food, laughter, fun, sports, and generosity toward those in need—along with other godly ways of honoring their obedience to Him. Hosea 1:2-3 KJV 1 Then said the Lord to me, Go again, love [the same] woman [Gomer] who is beloved of a paramour and is an adulteress, even as the Lord loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins [used in the sacrificial feasts in idol worship]. 2 So I bought her for fifteen pieces of silver and a homer and a half of barley [the price of a slave]. 3 And I said to her, You shall be [betrothed] to me for many days; you shall not play the harlot and you shall not belong to another man. So will I also be to you [until you have proved your loyalty to me and our marital relations may be resumed]. Hosea 3:1-3 AMPC But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 KJV And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the Lord their God, nor seek him for all this. Hosea 7:10 KJV *- Sadly, the Northern Kingdom of Israel did not return to God in time to avoid destruction. So it is today for those who refuse to turn to God, even after being warned—the heavy burden of the minister. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2 KJV *- joy (in this verse): to attain blessedness at the right hand of God in heaven—Jesus’ ultimate reward for pleasing His Father. *- What you set before you as your joy determines your faithfulness—and your reward. *- Joy is not an emotion. Joy is a response out of the fruit of the Spirit, love. *- despise: think little or nothing of *- King David composed a psalm of repentance after Prophet Nathan confronted him regarding his adultery with Bathsheba and the arranged murder of her husband, Uriah. 9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. 13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. Psalm 51:9-13 KJV *- After we sin, the joy that accompanies God's salvation of our lives is depleted. *- uphold: sustain (strengthen or sustain; bear the weight of an object without breaking or falling) *- free: willing (heal my spirit so I'll willingly obey You again, without resistance) *- When God restores His joy and a willing spirit in us, we can then teach disobedient ones His ways, and sinners will convert to Jesus. Lifework Assignment: *- Ask the Holy Spirit, “Is the joy set before me to please God, no matter what He commands me to do?” *- Remember, King Jesus and the prophet Hosea were given extremely difficult and potentially embarrassing assignments by God. They fulfilled their missions successfully, and so can you. Expected Behavior: They shall not [literally] return into [another bondage in] the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be their king because they refused to return to Me. Hosea 11:5 AMPC *- We must never allow ourselves to be drawn into another bondage—one that results from refusing to return to God after He has made a way and called us out of previous enslavement.
