Ep 588 – Beyond the Tissue: Trauma-Informed Care with Angie Parris 18.08.2026 33minTrauma can show up on the massage table in ways practitioners may not expect. In this episode of The ABMP Podcast, Angie Parris is joined by Upledger Institute instructors Catherine Whelan, Eric Moya, and Natalie Bledstein to explore what it means to be trauma-informed and how that differs from providing trauma-specific care. They discuss recognizing when a client may be moving outside their window of tolerance, the importance of consent and communication, and practical ways to help clients stay present and grounded during a session. Guests: Eric Moya began his career as a massage therapist in 1997 and quickly moved into studying the osteopathic family of therapies including CranioSacral Therapy, lymphatic drainage, and visceral manipulation. With an interest in the body, mind, spirit connection, Eric began formal mental health training with a masters in mental health in 2007. Eric is also a senior instructor for the Upledger Institute over the past 27 years. During that time, Eric has contributed original coursework in the curriculum in addition to teaching core curriculum courses. Within the past 20 years, Eric has completed additional training in mindfulness, meditation, working with trauma, and has developed his own curriculum integrating body, mind, and spirit in clinical practice. Currently, Eric is working on a Ph.D in clinical psychology with an emphasis on psychoanalytic/psychodynamic approaches to therapy and qualitative research methods. Natalie Bledstein, OTR/L, CST-D, SEP, has been an Occupational Therapist for over 30 years. Natalie has in-depth experience in Sensory Integration and CranioSacral Therapy. She currently teaches CS1, SER1, and SER2 for the Upledger Institute. Natalie's interest in trauma recovery led her to seek professional mentorship as part of completing the three-year Somatic Experiencing Practitioner certification. Catherine Whelan is an Upledger CranioSacral Therapist and CranioSacral Therapy instructor with more than two decades of experience in the wellness field. Catherine's foundational background with a degree in kinesiology, personal training, and bodywork shapes her individual practice. For the past 5 years, she has been working collaboratively with other practitioners, including trauma therapists, to create a more community-based approach to wellness. Ep 587 – Maximizing Every Workshop: "Fully Booked" with Elicia Crook 14.08.2026 17minWould you like to get the absolute most out of every workshop you attend? What helps us retain information? And more importantly, how do we take all those incredible things we learn and put them into practice when we get home? Learning something is one thing. Doing something with it is where the magic happens. And that's exactly what I'm going to share with you in this episode. Host: Elicia Crook is a business coach and mentor for massage therapists, sharing the tactics she used to create her business success over 16 years. She is a diploma-qualified remedial massage therapist, using modalities such as Bowen and craniosacral therapy, and has a Cert IV in Workplace Training and Assessment, which she used while teaching massage for several years. Through her career and business experience, Crook discovered who she needed to be and what is required to run a deeply satisfying massage business. Now she takes the Fully Booked Without Burnout blueprint to other therapists around the world to create more success and passion. For more information, visit https://healthleaderco.com/ Resources: I love being a massage therapist, but there was a point where I'd realized I'd built a really busy practice and also accidentally built a business that completely relied on me. If I didn't treat, I didn't earn, and I knew I wanted more, more income, more impact, more freedom, but mostly more choice. I didn't wanna stop being a therapist. I wanted to build a business that supported the life I actually wanted, and learning how to think like a business owner changed everything for me, and that's why I created Mastery. So if you love what you do, but there's a part of you thinking, "I know my business could be more than this," book a Mastery call. You can apply at the bottom on the page and book a call with my Christine or James to get eyes on your business. Ep 586 – Interview with Dr. Armpit, Part 2: "I Have a Client Who . . ." Pathology Conversations with Ruth Werner 11.08.2026 25minIn Part 2 of this conversation, Dr. Callewaert shares what he learned while visiting the Yanomami people of Brazil, including surprising observations about body odor and skin cancer. We also explore his work developing products to rebalance the armpit microbiome, the science of foot odor, and the potential benefits of walking barefoot in the grass. The big takeaway: Body odor is a problem that can often be addressed, but the stigma surrounding it can make conversations difficult. Massage therapists may be uniquely positioned to help destigmatize the topic and start those conversations. Ep 585 – The Pec Minor Is a Weirdo: "The Rebel MT" with Allison Denney 04.08.2026 15minThe pectoralis minor is weird in all the best ways. It is a minor player in the shoulder world in much the same way a minor chord can change the entire feel of a song. Give Radiohead's "Creep" a listen, then queue up this episode, sit back, and discover why weird—in both music and anatomy—is so beautiful. Host Bio: Contact Allison Denney: rebelmt@abmp.com Allison's website: www.rebelmassage.com Allison Denney is a certified massage therapist and certified YouTuber. You can find her massage tutorials at YouTube.com/RebelMassage. She is also passionate about creating products that are kind, simple, and productive for therapists to use in their practices. Her products, along with access to her blog and CE opportunities, can be found at rebelmassage.com. About our Sponsors: Rebel Massage Therapist: My name is Allison. And I am not your typical massage therapist. After 20 years of experience and thousands of clients, I have learned that massage therapy is SO MUCH more than a relaxing experience at a spa. I see soft tissue as more than merely a physical element but a deeply complex, neurologically driven part of who you are. I use this knowledge to work WITH you—not ON you—to create change that works. This is the basis of my approach. As a massage therapist, I have worked in almost every capacity, including massage clinics, physical therapy clinics, chiropractor offices, spas, private practice, and teaching. I have learned incredible techniques and strategies from each of my experiences. In my 20 years as a massage therapist, I have never stopped growing. I currently have a private practice based out of Long Beach, California, where I also teach continuing education classes and occasionally work on my kids. Ep 584 – Reliance to Interdependence: "Fully Booked" with Elicia Crook 31.07.2026 15minOne of the things I've been thinking about lately is the idea of independence versus interdependence. As business owners, especially in the massage and wellness industry, we often celebrate independence. In fact, for many of us, independence was the reason we started our businesses in the first place. We wanted freedom: freedom from a boss, freedom from being told when we could take holidays, and freedom to choose our clients, our hours, our pricing, and our direction. Independence is incredibly attractive because, for many people, it represents choice. But what I've noticed over the years is that independence isn't where growth ends. It's just one stage of the journey. Host: Elicia Crook is a business coach and mentor for massage therapists, sharing the tactics she used to create her business success over 16 years. Ep 583 – Meet the Researchers: Hormones and Fascia with Katja Bartsch 28.07.2026 23minMeet the researchers! Rachelle and Nicole continue in this series of conversations with fascia researchers from around the globe. Hormones are talking to the cells that build our fascia. In this episode, researcher Dr. Katja Bartsch of Munich, Germany shares how she's been listening in on that conversation and tells us what it means for the women on our massage tables. Dr. Bartsch is exploring an emerging and under-studied question in her research: how do female hormones — and the drop in estrogen through menopause — affect our connective tissues? Listen as she updates us on the current findings. Rachelle and Nicole discuss how the science translates to the treatment room, and why so many women in midlife arrive at our massage tables with new pain and stiffness. The research is early and the answers aren't simple, but the questions are ones every bodyworker will want to hear. About our guest: Dr. Katja Bartsch is a sports scientist and fascia researcher at the Technical University of Munich. She is a Board-Certified Structural Integration practitioner, an E-RYT 500 yoga educator, and author of Optimizing Women's Health and Training: Embracing Female Physiology for Performance and Wellbeing (UBC Press, 2025). Dr. Bartsch teaches anatomy, fascia physiology, and female hormones in trainings and workshops across Europe, including with Yoga Medicine, and through her own platform, Kalamana Yoga (kalamanayoga.com). Host Bios: AnatomySCAPES Co-Directors, Rachelle Clauson and Nicole Trombley, are NCBTMB-approved continuing education providers and teach anatomy explorations for hands-on professionals online and in person. They co-author the "Anatomy for Touch" column in Massage & Bodywork magazine and enjoy helping therapists better understand how anatomy relates to what they are feeling through their sense of touch. Nicole Trombley: As a massage educator, Nicole draws on her passion for human biology to help therapists better understand the tissues under their hands. She owns and operates Equilibrio Massage in San Diego, CA, where she has specialized in massage for pregnancy and postpartum since 2004. Rachelle Clauson: Rachelle loves teaching therapists about the structural organization and beauty of the human fascial system. Pathology Conversations with Ruth Werner 14.07.2026 21minRuth interviews Dr. Chris Callewaert, also known as Dr. Armpit, about his research into the microbiomes that contribute to body odor (BO). Although his work focuses on the skin of the armpits, his findings also apply to foot odor and even bad breath. In Part 1, we meet Dr. Callewaert and learn what led him to this career—spoiler alert: it involved a sleepover. We discuss the differences between "good" and "bad" body odor, how BO is classified, why it is a concern, and how it can affect a person's quality of life. We also explore the skin-gut axis and how processes in the digestive tract influence the composition of our sweat and, in the case of SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), even the color of the tongue. Ep 579 – Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Bodywork: "The Rebel MT" with Allison Denney 07.07.2026 15minIn this episode of The Rebel MT, Allison reflects on a session she had as a newbie therapist that shaped how she approaches anatomy, particularly in relation to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). She explores what bodyworkers need to know about EDS, what interventions can be meaningfully helpful, and why the lessons learned from early mistakes can become some of our greatest strengths. Ep 574 - Meet the Researchers: Talking Tissues with Caterina Fede 02.06.2026 27minMeet the Researchers! Rachelle and Nicole launch a new series of conversations with fascia researchers from around the globe. Our first guest is Caterina Fede from the University of Padua, Italy. Caterina's work focuses on the microanatomy of fascia — the cells, gels, and fibers that determine what fascia is made of and how it's organized. In this conversation, she walks us through the layered architecture that connects the skin to muscle and explains how superficial fascia differs structurally and functionally from deep fascia. If you've ever thought of fat as just the layer you pass through to get somewhere deeper, this conversation might leave you with a whole new perspective. Ep 569 – Understanding Assessment Through Anatomy: A Map of the Knee: "The Rebel MT" with Allison Denney 12.05.2026 17minThe language of assessment is rarely taught in a way that feels approachable, which can make it intimidating and difficult to retain. In this episode of The Rebel MT, Allison breaks assessment down into a more practical, anatomy-based approach, showing how following the body's patterns can lead you to tools and insights you already have. Starting with the knee, she explores how anatomy itself can guide the assessment process.
