  This podcast features Charles Townsend reflecting on his trip to the UK in 1986 to race the IBMXF World Championships at Slough while still an amateur rider for Hutch.Charles talks about travelling from the United States with his Hutch teammate Eric Carter, his first impressions of the Slough track, and racing overseas for the first time. He also shares memories of battling Dutch European Champion Bas de Bever in both 20-inch and Cruiser competition, becoming a double World Champion, and forming lasting friendships with many of the English racers he met over the following years.

  Dennis’s story is a raw and compelling look at a life defined by resilience. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley and Antelope Valley with a Hells Angels father, Dennis experienced early trauma, including nearly being kidnapped at age 9 and facing a false statutory rape accusation at 13 that led him to attempt suicide. BMX racing became his unlikely lifeline after being introduced to the sport by neighbour Rich Bartlett in the early 1990s.Dennis raced through the mid to late 1990s. Life continued to throw challenges his way, including a catastrophic dirt bike crash that shattered 32 bones in his leg, years working as a tattoo artist in Utah and California, homelessness as recently as 2022, and losing his father in 2014.Through it all, BMX has continued to pull him back in. Now 48, Dennis is racing again after winning a Gold Cup and State Championship in 2022, raising two kids in the sport, enjoying the camaraderie of state racing, riding his bike, sharing his thoughts on the future, and more.

  In this episode of the BMX Weekly Pod, we catch up with San Diego local Scott Hultgren, a creative force on the design and branding side of Action Sports.Scott shares his journey from moving to San Diego at a young age, growing up riding BMX and later mountain bikes, to building a career in design and branding.   Last month, while over in the UK, I made the trip down to Kent to spend the day with Malcolm Jarvis and his family. It was an incredible opportunity to sit down and capture the story of the early days of British BMX.For those who may not know, Malcolm was responsible for bringing BMX to the UK. In 1979, after hearing about the sport, he flew to Los Angeles, immersed himself in the emerging BMX scene, and returned home inspired to build something from the ground up. That trip proved pivotal, visiting BMX Plus! and Bob Osborn at BMX Action, meeting the likes of Bob Haro, watching him ride, and visiting the Corona downhill and Azusa track while meeting Scott Breithaupt and Stu Thomsen. It was during this time that Malcolm began his relationship with Mongoose, laying the foundation for what would become a defining chapter in UK BMX history.Back in Britain after that trip, Malcolm helped shape the sport from its earliest days, developing rule books, building tracks, organizing races, and driving promotion and media, even bringing BMX onto television screens. He went on to create one of the most successful and influential teams in British BMX history, the Ammaco Mongoose team, with the likes of Andy Ruffell, Pete Middleton, Craig Schofield, Chris Young, Brian Jones, and the Llewellyn brothers, and many more.Malcolm reflects on those formative years, the rapid rise of BMX in the UK, and the peak of the boom before the bubble eventually burst. He also shares what life looked like for the Jarvis family after stepping away, and how he reconnected with many friends decades later at the launch of the British BMX Hall of Fame in 2022.We also dive into the behind-the-scenes stories of the early UK scene, highlighting key figures such as Don Smith, Geoff Wiles, and David Duffield, as well as relationships with Halfords and Raleigh. Malcolm recounts making the portable track that he took around the country, the family backyard track at Knockhurst, the lead-up to the very first official BMX race in the UK at Redditch in 1980, Buckmore Park, and many more moments that helped shape the sport’s foundation and so much more.A huge thank you to Malcolm and his family for their hospitality and for sharing such an important piece of BMX history.

We kick things off talking about BMX magazines, then get into some mid-’80s talk, including rider Solan Foster and the ’80s Huffy team Mike King, Brent Romero, and Gary Ellis. We also touch on the 1985 IBMXF Whistler Worlds, some terrible TV announcers, and the irritating fake Brad Simms on Facebook.From there, we reflect on the sad news of UGP’s Ronnie Bonner passing. We share our first memories of meeting Ronnie back in 1990 when we came over to the University of BMX training camp in Orlando. It was the first time we connected with Ronnie and UGP. It was a real honour to represent them, and we talked about how big UGP became in Europe during the ’90s. Great memories, great times.We then move on to remembering two of our old friends, Rob Indri and Winston “Winnie” Wright. It’s hard to believe it’s been over 25 years.   From SoCal Roots to 50+ Dominance: The Scott Felt Story 12.02.2026 1t 13min

  In this episode, Brian Randolph (BioLab TM) and I sit down with Scott Felt to talk about his BMX journey, from growing up in the SoCal scene to becoming one of the fastest riders in the 50+ classes today.Scott grew up in La Verne / San Dimas, in the middle of a strong Southern California BMX scene, riding tracks like Azusa, Monrovia, and Honda Hills alongside riders such as Matt Haden, Harry Leary, and Tinker Juarez. He shares stories about racing with Geoff Schofield and “Chicken” George Seevers and riding for S&K Bicycles and later White Bear through the early 90s before stepping away from racing around 1993.Although he left competition, he never fully left riding, staying connected to BMX and riding with his friend Derek Garcia while focusing on work and family life.In 2013, after more than 20 years off, Scott returned to racing at the Reno National, later racing Ventura and reconnecting with Greg Hill, who helped train both his son and, eventually, Scott himself. He competed through 2017 before taking another break to ride mountain bikes and support his son’s football.In 2024, Scott returned again with a more focused approach, riding with his friend Lloyd Sherrod and later joining BioLab under team manager Brian Randolph. This time around, Scott raced names like John Whipperman, Corky Gainsford, Kirk Landeen, and Andy Contes, holding his own before moving into the 50-55 class, doubling at the ’24 Grands, and going on to win more than 40 Nationals in 2025, managing an injury toward the end of the season and dealing with it through the 2025 Grands.We also discuss the possibility of a future matchup with multi-time European and World Champion Richard Van Zomeren in the 50+ Cruiser class, and whether they might line up at the 2026 Worlds in Australia alongside some of the guys Scott is racing in the US in 2026 and his future goals.

  I first met Brian back in 2006 at one of the Free Agent clinics I was running at the time with Cristian Becerine. We stayed in touch on and off over the years, and I’d also see him at races from time to time. So it was great to finally reconnect properly when Brian and his son made the drive from Arizona to San Diego on Friday. We linked up with one of his team riders, Scott Felt, hung out, and recorded a couple of episodes together.In this episode, we get into Brian’s story, starting with growing up in Florida and racing BMX in the 1980s. From there, Brian talks about his career in the Marine Corps, moving around for work, and continuing to race BMX wherever life took him when he could.We then bring it up to the present, where Brian shares how he became Team Manager of the BioLab team at the end of 2023. He gives insight into what the team is all about, the vision behind it, and some of the riders on the roster, including Pistol Pete Loncarevich and Andy Contes, and lots more.Thanks for driving over, Brian.   It was great to catch up for a podcast with U.S. Elite Pro rider Cam Bramer while he was out here in San Diego, getting ready for this weekend’s Holeshot Challenge at the State Finals at San Diego BMX.Cam shared some insight into his BMX journey, starting out at the legendary South Park track in Pennsylvania — a place many of us have raced over the decades — and progressing through the amateur ranks all the way to Pro. This year, he reached a huge milestone, winning his first Elite National main event in Minnesota, in front of his family.We talked about what it’s like being a current Pro in today’s tough climate. Despite the challenges, Cam has built a solid group of sponsors who support his racing journey. He also spoke about his recent move to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to further his career, his goal of racing more World Cups, and his ultimate dream — qualifying for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and representing Team USA on home soil.Cam gave some great perspective on the depth of the current Elite class, his mindset, and his drive to win. I really enjoyed this one — Cam’s a great guy, and it’s riders like him you can’t help but cheer for.
