This LibriVox recording presents William Blake’s poetry collection Songs of Innocence and Experience, which explores the contrary states of the human soul. The Songs of Innocence poems are written from or about a child’s perspective, while Songs of Experience offers contrasting views on the world. Blake wrote the latter partly in response to the French Revolution’s failure, which shook his faith in human goodness. The poems also reflect his belief that children lose innocence through exploitation and religious dogma, but should still gain experience through their own discoveries.
