Why Is It So Hard to Be a Beginner Again? Courage, Midlife & Trying Something New | Ep. 316 13.10.2026 16Min.What happens when you're already really good at a lot of things... and suddenly you're a beginner again? Y'all, I've been feeling this one personally. Lately, I've been stepping into several new things, including working with a nutritionist and a stylist, and both have asked me to learn, trust, experiment, and let go of being the person who already knows exactly what she's doing. And that can feel surprisingly vulnerable. Especially when you've spent years building mastery. This month, we're talking about courage, and today we're digging into the courage required to step into something new. Because if you're pursuing a goal that is truly thrilling, important, and daunting, there's a pretty good chance you're eventually going to reach a point where you don't know exactly what you're doing. That doesn't necessarily mean you've chosen the wrong goal. It might mean you've chosen a worthy one. In this episode, we're talking about why being a beginner can feel especially uncomfortable in midlife, how self-efficacy influences the goals we're willing to pursue, and why capable people can sometimes become trapped inside the things they already know they're good at. We'll also talk about vulnerability, mastery, recognition, and the temporary discomfort that comes with giving up the identity of being the expert in the room. And I'm sharing a few questions that can help when you're stepping into something new: What will make me want to quit being new at this? What obstacles can I prepare for before they happen? What is the cost of staying exactly where I am? And how can I practice self-compassion while I learn? Because courage isn't about waiting until you feel confident. It's about being willing to move toward something that matters while you're still learning how. So if you've been avoiding a goal because you don't want to be bad at something again, maybe your next step isn't becoming more confident. Maybe it's simply giving yourself permission to be a beginner. How Do You Build Courage? Why Courage Is a Practice, Not a Personality Trait | Ep. 315 06.10.2026 18Min.You've probably heard that courage isn't the absence of fear. But here's the part we don't talk about enough: courage isn't a personality trait either. It isn't something you either have or you don't. It isn't reserved for people who run into burning buildings, make headlines, or do things the rest of us would immediately label heroic. Courage is something you practice. And if you've ever set a goal that scared you and taken a step toward it anyway, you've already practiced it. This month, we're exploring courage, goal setting, and identity, and in this episode I'm digging into what courage actually is, why fear doesn't disqualify you from being courageous, and why the risks we face aren't always as equal as we pretend they are. We'll talk about the difference between general courage and personal courage, why something that feels terrifying to you might seem completely ordinary to someone else, and how every time you move through fear successfully, you collect evidence that you can do it again. I'm also looking at courage through the lens of gender. Women are often described as less confident or more risk-averse, but the research tells a more complicated story. Sometimes we underestimate ourselves. Sometimes we've spent years miscalibrating our own abilities. But sometimes we're accurately identifying a social cost that is genuinely higher for us. That matters when we think about ambition, asking for what we want, taking risks, and even the size of the goals we're willing to set. So we're also talking about self-efficacy, why the way you assess your own ability affects the goals you pursue, and a few tools that can help you act when fear is standing between you and something you care about. We'll explore WOOP, implementation intentions, fear-setting, and why self-compassion after failure doesn't make you less driven. You don't have to wait until you feel courageous. You practice courage by acting while you're afraid. So here's the question we're going to keep exploring this month: What is the goal you already know you want, and what fear has been standing behind it? Why Isn’t Your Ritual Sticking? How to Create a Ritual Menu That Works With Real Life | Ep. 314 29.09.2026 12Min.What do you do when you've created a ritual, tried it a few times, and it just isn't sticking? Maybe the answer isn't to try harder. Y'all, life has been a little bit of crazy town around here lately. Back-to-school schedules, early morning rehearsals, sick kids, health stuff, travel, speaking engagements, work, and all the beautiful opportunities I've been dreaming about for years are happening at the same time. And through all of it, I've been holding onto my rituals. But a conversation with one of my clients recently made me realize something: We don't show up in exactly the same state every day. And if our current state changes, the state we're trying to move toward might change too. So why would we expect one ritual to work every single time? In this episode, I'm introducing the idea of a ritual menu: a small collection of rituals you can choose from depending on what you actually need in that moment. Instead of immediately deciding what your perfect ritual should look like, I want you to experiment. Spend some time asking yourself two questions: What is my current state? And what is my desired state? Pay attention. Collect some data. Look for the patterns that emerge. You might discover that you don't need one perfect end-of-the-workday ritual. You need three or four options that help you move from where you are to where you want to be. Because the best ritual isn't necessarily the most beautiful, elaborate, or perfectly consistent one. The best ritual is the ritual you'll actually do. As we wrap up this month of exploring rituals, I hope you'll keep experimenting, keep playing, and give yourself permission to create practices that work with your real life instead of demanding that your real life conform to them. And if you've been living in crazy town lately too, I hope your rituals are helping you hold on loosely, hurry slowly, and grit gently. What If the Ordinary Moments Are the Ones That Matter Most? Using Rituals to Be More Present | Ep. 313 22.09.2026 16Min.What if the moments that matter most aren't the ones you planned for? Maybe it's the cup of tea at the end of the day. The question your kid asks right before the light goes out. The breath you take before doing something hard. The few minutes you spend with your planner before the day begins. This month, we've been talking all about rituals: what they are, what they're not, and how they can help us move through our lives with more intention. But today, I want to talk about where rituals actually live. And for most of us, that's right in the middle of an ordinary Tuesday. When you're doing big things, ordinary moments can start to feel like obstacles to get through. Breakfast becomes a logistics problem. The commute becomes dead time. Bedtime becomes another task to complete. You move from work to home to family without ever really marking where one role ended and another began. And eventually, you can look up and realize you've been moving through your life without really being present for it. In this episode, we're exploring how rituals can help us meet those ordinary moments differently. I'm sharing three places where a simple ritual can be especially powerful: the beginning of your work, the transitions between your roles, and the end of your day. We'll also talk about savoring, why rituals can help make time more visible, and how repeated ordinary moments can accumulate meaning over time. The goal isn't to cram more rituals into your already full life. It's to notice what's already there and decide which moments deserve more of your attention. So instead of asking, “When will I have time for more meaningful moments?” I want you to ask a different question: What ordinary moment in my life deserves more of my presence? You don't need a retreat, a perfect morning, or a clear calendar. You need one ordinary moment you already have and a decision to meet it differently. How Do You Build a Ritual That Actually Sticks? 7 Steps for Creating a Sustainable Ritual | Ep. 312 15.09.2026 17Min.What if the most powerful thing you did today was make a cup of tea? Not because tea is magic or because you're following some elaborate morning routine you saw on Instagram, but because you make it the same way, in the same mug, and use those five minutes to reconnect with yourself before opening a single email. That's a ritual. This month, we've been exploring what rituals are, the myths that can get in the way of them, and how ordinary moments can become meaningful ones. Today, we're getting practical: How do you actually build a ritual that lasts? Because life gets lifey, y'all. Illness happens. Travel happens. Deadlines happen. Your kids need more from you. And when a meaningful practice falls apart during one of those seasons, it's really easy to decide that you weren't disciplined enough or that you somehow failed. But a sustainable ritual isn't one you perform perfectly. It's one you keep choosing, even when its form needs to change. In this episode, I'm walking you through seven moves for creating a sustainable ritual. We'll talk about starting with the transition you actually need help making, attaching your ritual to something reliable, keeping it small, adding meaning and sensory cues, creating a clear beginning and ending, actively participating in the ritual, and protecting enough flexibility for it to survive real life. Because your ritual doesn't need 72 steps or 45 uninterrupted minutes to matter. The question isn't whether you can build the perfect ritual for your best week. It's whether you can create something meaningful enough and flexible enough to support you through the hard ones, too. So as you think about your own rituals, ask yourself: What are you trying to mark, protect, or return to? And what would it look like to create a ritual that supports the life you're actually living? Are Your Rituals Helping You or Adding More Pressure? 8 Myths About Meaningful Rituals | Ep. 311 08.09.2026 17Min.What happens when the practice that's supposed to support you becomes one more thing you feel like you have to get right? This month, we're talking all about rituals and how they can help us do big things without losing ourselves. But if you're anything like me, you might hear about a meaningful practice, immediately turn it into a system, and then start measuring yourself against how well you're doing it. Suddenly, the thing that was supposed to help you feel grounded becomes another place where you feel behind. So in this episode, we're busting some of the biggest myths about rituals. Do rituals have to be religious? Elaborate? Performed consistently? Do they actually improve performance? And if you miss your ritual, have you somehow ruined it? We're digging into what research actually tells us about rituals, why a meaningful ritual should remain flexible and chosen, and how to tell when a supportive practice is starting to become another demand. I'm also sharing one of my favorite approaches for making rituals work in real life: creating one-minute, five-minute, and 30-minute versions so your ritual can flex with you when life gets messy. Because your ritual is not a streak. It's not a moral test. And its value doesn't depend on whether it makes you more productive. Sometimes a ritual helps you focus. Sometimes it marks an ending. Sometimes it helps you celebrate, grieve, rest, or simply notice your life while you're living it. So here's the question I want you to carry with you: Is this ritual supporting you? What Is a Ritual, Really? How Small Actions Help You Do Big Things Without Losing Yourself | Ep. 310 01.09.2026 24Min.What if the thing that helps you do big things without losing yourself isn't another productivity system? What if it's a ritual? September is here, and with a new month comes a new theme on Plan Goal Plan! This month, we're exploring rituals and how small, meaningful actions can help us stay present, navigate transitions, and remain connected to ourselves while pursuing big goals. In this episode, I'm breaking down what a ritual actually is and, just as importantly, what it isn't. We'll explore the differences between rituals, routines, habits, ceremonies, and compulsions, along with some fascinating research on why humans use rituals to create meaning, regulate emotions, navigate uncertainty, and mark transitions. But we're also bringing this back to planning and goal setting, because ambitious women are really good at moving forward. We finish one task and move to the next. We accomplish a goal and immediately start chasing another. Work bleeds into home, one role bleeds into another, and sometimes we move so quickly that we forget to actually experience our own lives. Ritual gives us another option. A ritual doesn't have to involve candles, incense, or an elaborate morning routine. It can be as simple as closing your laptop at the end of the workday, drinking tea from a particular cup, walking across campus without rushing, or asking yourself what you're willing to leave unfinished until tomorrow. What matters isn't complexity. It's meaning. So as you move toward your next big thing, I want you to notice where you're moving so quickly that you no longer feel present to your own life. That might just be where a ritual belongs. How Do You Actually Live With Purpose? Aligning Your Goals, Time, and What Matters | Ep. 309 25.08.2026 13Min.Purpose can be inspiring, motivating, and meaningful... but it can also become pressure, obligation, or even something other people use to exploit our care. So after spending this month questioning purpose, I'm finally asking: What if purpose isn't something we find once and spend the rest of our lives following? What if purpose is something we practice? In this episode, I'm exploring a more nuanced way to think about purpose as something we create and understand through our behaviors, choices, goals, and everyday actions. Instead of asking only “What is my purpose?” I want us to start asking “What is this sense of purpose inviting me to do?” We're talking about how to audit your calendar for purpose, recognize the goals you're currently optimizing for, and determine whether the way you're actually spending your time reflects what you say matters most. Because you can flawlessly execute a goal and still realize that goal isn't aligned with the life you want to build. As August comes to a close and we step into that fresh-start energy of a new school year and fall routines, this is your invitation to get curious. What does your calendar say you value? What practices keep you connected to your purpose? And where might someone else's must be taking up space that belongs to something that matters more? Purpose doesn't have to be one perfect answer you uncover and carry forever. It can evolve as you do. Maybe the goal isn't to finally find your purpose. Maybe it's to keep practicing it. What Are You Meant to Do? Finding Purpose Through Your Gifts and Struggles | Ep. 308 18.08.2026 30Min.What if the struggle you're in right now isn't pulling you away from your purpose... but actually helping you find it? In this episode, I'm joined by TJ Warren, a superhero-loving educator whose journey to meaningful work included 54 job applications, ten months of searching, getting let go from the post office, and eventually discovering that his own purpose was helping other people pursue theirs. Together, we're exploring what it actually means to pursue purpose rather than waiting around for it to magically appear. We talk about why your purpose doesn't have to be your profession, how struggle can reveal parts of ourselves we might never discover otherwise, and why being good at something isn't arrogant when you're using those gifts to serve others. We also dig into: the difference between purpose, vocation, calling, and a job why purpose can sometimes turn into pressure how to identify your interests, skills, passions, and values why young people shouldn't be expected to have their entire lives figured out what superheroes can teach us about using our strengths while navigating struggle and simple questions you can ask when you're not sure what you're meant to do next Maybe you don't need to find one perfect purpose. Maybe purpose is something you pursue, practice, and continue refining as you learn more about yourself and the world around you. Why Doesn't Achieving Your Goal Feel Like Enough? What to Do After the Big Win | Ep. 307 11.08.2026 17Min.Have you ever achieved the thing you worked SO hard for... only to wonder, Is this it? This month on Plan Goal Plan, we're talking about purpose. Last week, we explored what happens when purpose becomes pressure. This week, we're flipping that conversation around: What happens when purpose delivers exactly what it promised, you achieve the big goal, and somehow it still doesn't feel like enough? In this episode, I'm digging into why achievement doesn't always create the fulfillment we expect and why our instinct to immediately set the next goal might actually keep us stuck in the same cycle. We're talking about impact bias, the messy middle, and what happens when we become so focused on proving we can do something that we forget to ask whether we still want it. I also share four questions to help you reflect on your last goal, understand the trade-offs you made to achieve it, and decide what actually deserves your energy next. Because being good at something doesn't mean you have to keep doing it. And feeling uncertain after a big accomplishment doesn't mean something has gone wrong. Maybe this season isn't asking you to achieve more. Maybe it's asking you to get curious about what you actually want. If you're standing between the goal you accomplished and whatever comes next, friend, this one's for you. When Does Purpose Become Pressure? Escaping the Purpose Trap | Ep. 306 04.08.2026 17Min.Purpose is supposed to bring clarity. So why does it sometimes feel so heavy? This month, we're exploring the idea of purpose, and we're starting with a trap that many high-achieving women fall into without even realizing it: when purpose stops serving as a compass and starts becoming a measuring stick. In this episode, we're unpacking what happens when meaningful work quietly turns into internal pressure—and why rest alone doesn't fix the exhaustion that comes from constantly feeling like you haven't done enough. Together, we explore: the difference between burnout and demoralization how purpose can shift from inspiration to an internal audit system why high-achievers often tie their identity to their work the concept of liminality and why so many women feel stuck in the "almost there" season how assignments, calling, and identity are different why ordinary days can feel strangely uncomfortable and four powerful reflection questions to help you reconnect with purpose without letting it define your worth One of my favorite ideas from this episode is that purpose should function as a compass, and not a scorecard. Because when every day becomes a test of whether you've done enough, even meaningful work can become exhausting. Maybe the invitation isn't to care less. Maybe it's to build a life where your purpose has a place, but it isn't the only place you find yourself. Why Doesn't Rest Work for High Achievers? 5 Recovery Mistakes to Stop Making | Ep. 305 28.07.2026 18Min.You finally have a free afternoon... ...and somehow you spend it reorganizing your email, researching the "best" way to rest, or planning next month's goals. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. In this final episode of our July series on rest, we're exploring one of the biggest traps high-achievers fall into: trying to optimize recovery instead of actually experiencing it. Because the same strengths that help us succeed—planning, organizing, measuring progress, solving problems—can quietly keep us stuck in burnout when we apply them to rest. In this episode, we explore: the five biggest recovery mistakes high-achievers make why you can't habit-stack your way out of burnout the difference between intense recovery and everyday restoration why micro-moments of rest matter more than occasional vacations how optimization can become another form of avoidance why rest isn't something you earn after finishing your to-do list practical ways to carry the lessons of July into the busy transition of August As August approaches and routines begin to shift, I also share five simple practices to help you protect your energy, navigate transition with intention, and remember that rest isn't the opposite of ambition—it's what makes ambition sustainable. Why Doesn't More Free Time Make You Feel Better? The Truth About Time Freedom | Ep. 304 21.07.2026 27Min.What if having more time isn't the same thing as feeling free? This week, I'm joined by Dr. Ann Tsung, a NASA flight surgeon, triple board-certified emergency physician, entrepreneur, and mom, to explore one of the biggest misconceptions about productivity: that if we could just free up our calendars, we'd finally feel at peace. But as Ann shares from her own sabbatical and travels abroad, time freedom isn't just about controlling your schedule. It's about transforming your relationship with time. Together, we explore: the five stages of time freedom why "fake time freedom" keeps so many high-achievers feeling stressed the difference between managing your time and managing your energy why white space on your calendar can feel surprisingly uncomfortable how outsourcing, boundaries, and nervous system regulation work together why saying "yes" to everything keeps us trapped in scarcity and how creating space for possibility often leads to the moments that matter most One of my favorite insights from this conversation is that the goal isn't simply to optimize every minute. Sometimes the most meaningful moments happen precisely because we left room for them. If you've ever wondered why a full calendar doesn't always equal a full life, this conversation offers a completely different way of thinking about success, rest, and what it really means to experience time freedom. Why Does Rest Feel So Uncomfortable? When Productivity Becomes Your Identity | Ep. 303 14.07.2026 22Min.Last week, we explored what rest actually is. This week, we're going one layer deeper. Because what if the hardest part about rest isn't finding the time... it's figuring out who you are when you're not accomplishing something? For so many high-achievers, busyness isn't just a schedule. It's become part of our identity. When the to-do list disappears, the silence can feel surprisingly uncomfortable, not because we're doing something wrong, but because stillness invites questions we've spent years avoiding. In this episode, we're exploring: why rest can feel uncomfortable even when you desperately need it how productivity quietly becomes part of our identity the difference between true rest and simply numbing out why high-achieving women often struggle with stillness how our nervous systems learn that busyness equals safety what emotional and spiritual rest actually look like and how rest can become a practice of rediscovering who you are beneath your accomplishments One of the biggest takeaways? Rest isn't just recovery from performance. It's an invitation to remember who you are when nothing is required of you. Because your worth was never meant to depend on your output. The more connected you become to who you are beneath the achievement, the more sustainable your success becomes. Why Am I Still Tired After Vacation? The Rest You're Actually Missing | Ep. 302 07.07.2026 20Min.Last month, we explored play. This month, we're slowing down to explore something just as important, but often misunderstood: rest. Because here's the thing. You can get eight hours of sleep, take a vacation, or spend an entire weekend "doing nothing" and still feel completely exhausted. So what if the problem isn't that you need more rest? What if you need a different kind? In this episode, I'm unpacking some of the biggest myths we carry about rest and introducing the powerful framework of the seven types of rest from Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith. Together, we explore: why sleep isn't the only kind of rest your body needs the difference between play, restoration, and true rest why so many high-achieving women feel guilty slowing down how productivity culture teaches us to earn our rest the seven different types of rest and how to recognize which one you're missing why vacations don't always leave us feeling refreshed and how learning to rest well can actually help us show up more fully in every area of our lives One of my biggest takeaways? Rest isn't something you earn after you've done enough. It's one of the things that allows you to keep doing what matters most. So as we begin this month's conversation, I hope you'll get curious—not just about whether you're tired, but about what kind of tired you really are. How Do You Make July Count? A Simple Reset for Your Health, Wealth, and Relationships | Ep. 301 30.06.2026 12Min.July has a way of disappearing before we even realize it's begun. So instead of filling your calendar with more goals, more pressure, and more things to keep up with, what if you designed a month that actually felt like you? In this episode, I'm sharing a simple framework to help you reset for July with just three intentional practices—one for your health, one for your wealth, and one for your relationships. Together, we'll create a month that's both ambitious and grounded, so you can make meaningful progress without sacrificing rest, play, or the things that matter most. We also explore: why your goals should work on your hardest Tuesday—not just your best day the difference between support and accountability how to choose the kind of encouragement you need this season why guilt isn't the same as motivation and how to create a July you'll actually enjoy living through My hope isn't that you end July with a perfect streak. Why Is It So Hard to Look Foolish? Play, Vulnerability, and Being Fully Yourself | Ep.300 23.06.2026 21Min.Play sounds fun in theory. But in practice? Play asks us to risk looking foolish. It asks us to try something we're not good at, let go of control, and show parts of ourselves that don't always fit neatly into the roles we've built our lives around. In this episode, Ryan and I are talking about the vulnerability hidden inside play and why it can feel surprisingly difficult, especially for people who are used to being competent, capable, and taken seriously. We explore: why play often feels risky for high-achievers the connection between vulnerability and creativity how professionalism can sometimes crowd out authenticity why being playful doesn't make you less capable what our holiday spider has taught us about joy and belonging how play strengthens relationships at work, at home, and with our kids and why some of life's best stories begin with being willing to look a little ridiculous One of my favorite takeaways from this conversation is that play creates permission, not just for us, but for the people around us. When we're willing to show up fully as ourselves, it often gives others permission to do the same. And maybe that's the real invitation here. Not to become less serious, but to become more fully yourself. Creativity, Burnout, and Reimagining Your Life | Ep. 299 16.06.2026 24Min.This month we're talking about creativity and play, and today's conversation completely changed the way I think about both. I'm joined by Tasha Golden. She is a former touring songwriter turned public health researcher whose work explores how creativity shapes our wellbeing, identity, and ability to navigate change. What started as a conversation about creativity quickly became a conversation about burnout, life transitions, identity, and the stories we tell ourselves about who we are. We explore: why creativity is about more than art or self-expression how burnout can become an invitation to reimagine your life the connection between creativity and behavior change why difficult emotions can act as guides instead of obstacles Tasha's concept of "The Art of Refusal" how limiting stories shape our choices and identities and why creativity may be one of the most important skills we have for navigating uncertainty One of my favorite moments in this conversation is the idea that sometimes we haven't reached the limits of reality. We've simply reached the limits of the story we're telling ourselves. If you've ever felt stuck, burnt out, uncertain, or like you're standing in the middle of a life transition wondering what's next, this episode offers a powerful reminder: The end of one story doesn't mean it's the end of your story. It may simply be the beginning of a new one Connect with Tasha Website: Tasha Golden Free Resources: Plan Goal Plan Listener Page Connect with me: Email: [email protected] Facebook Group: Join Here Website: PlanGoalPlan.com LinkedIn: (I post most here!) www.linkedin.com/in/danielle-mcgeough-phd-🗓️-b673334 Ready to begin? Why Do You Feel Guilty Resting? Learning to Give Yourself Permission | Ep. 298 09.06.2026 14Min.Last week, we talked about whether play can be productive. This week, we're digging into different questions: If play is important... why is it so hard to actually let ourselves do it? Why does rest feel uncomfortable? Why does fun feel like something we have to earn? And why do so many high-achieving women find themselves waiting for permission to stop, even when no one is asking them to keep going? In this episode, I'm exploring: why guilt around rest is often a learned response how productivity culture shapes our relationship with play the invisible ways women are socialized to earn rest and fun why so many of us wait for external permission before taking care of ourselves the "put on your shoes" principle and why action often comes before feeling ready how over-functioning becomes a pattern we don't even notice and why play is deeply connected to identity, self-trust, and knowing what you actually want One of the biggest takeaways? Permission isn't a feeling you wait for. It's a decision you make. The goal isn't just to make more time for play. The goal is to stop outsourcing your choices and start trusting yourself enough to honor what you need. And maybe the next step isn't waiting until things slow down. Maybe it's putting on your shoes anyway. Can Play Make You More Successful? Why High-Achieving Women Need Play | Ep. 297 02.06.2026 18Min.This month on Plan Goal Plan, we’re talking about play, and honestly, I think a lot of us have forgotten how to do it. Somewhere along the way, many high-achieving women learned that if something is serious, meaningful, or important… play has no business being there. That joy is earned. That rest has to be justified. That fun should come after the work is done. But what if play isn’t the opposite of ambition? What if it’s part of how we sustain it? In this episode, I’m exploring: whether play can actually support productivity and creativity why so many women struggle to access play without guilt the connection between play, nervous system regulation, and burnout how achievement culture teaches us to treat play like a reward instead of a necessity why planning your play may actually help you enjoy it more and how play helps us stay connected to ourselves outside of our roles and responsibilities I also share stories from teaching, motherhood, amusement parks, public speaking “play days,” and the ways play can become a form of resistance in a culture obsessed with output and proving yourself. One of the biggest takeaways? The women doing the biggest things long-term are not necessarily the ones sacrificing the most. They’re often the ones who have learned how to refuel. And maybe play isn’t a distraction from your life. Maybe it’s part of how you stay found inside of it.
