While this year’s camp and preseason has been shortened by the new Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL and the NHLPA, Glen Gulutzan and his staff need to maximize their time to prepare for the new 84-game season. On today’s show, Owen & Luds will continue to talk about some of the first day reactions, including way too early forward lines and defensive pairings.   The Other 31: Minnesota Wild Our guest today is Jess Myers, Wild beat writer for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The Minnesota Wild snapped a 10-year drought in April, when they beat the Dallas Stars in six games in the first round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. It was the first series win for the Wild since the 2015 post season. GM Bill Guerin made a huge splash last season when he traded a king’s ransom for Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes, a move that helped Guerin with the Jim Gregory GM of the Year award. However, the Wild crashed out of the playoffs in the second round in just five games to the Colorado Avalanche. Minnesota is clearly one of the current “Big Three” in the Central Division, along with the Stars and Avalanche, and will be expecting to contend for the top of the division and the Stanley Cup in 2026-27. It may be recency bias, but are the Wild currently the Stars’ biggest rival?

  The Other 31: Calgary Flames Our guest today is Brendan Parker, Calgary Flames TV host on Sportsnet. The Flames are both building and rebuilding. First, their arena. Opened in 1983, the iconic Scotiabank Saddledome will host its 43rd and final season of Flames hockey in 2026-27, as the team will move to their brand new arena (still under construction) Scotia Place for the 2027-28 campaign. Second, on the ice. Calgary GM Craig Conroy is currently in the midst of a full-blown rebuild. The team has not made the playoffs since 2022, when they won the Pacific Division and beat the Dallas Stars in the first round on a dramatic Game 7 overtime goal by the late Johnny Gaudreau. They then lost in the second round to the Edmonton Oilers in five games and haven’t sniffed the post season since. The Flames finished in 7th place in the Pacific in 2025-26, 13 points behind the Los Angeles Kings for the second wild card spot in the West. The Flames are not expected to be a playoff team again in 2026-27, which would be five-straight years without post season hockey in Calgary.

  Our guest today is Kevin Karius, who just retired in June after a 36-year career in television and radio sports broadcasting in Edmonton, most recently as the morning radio host on Sports 1440. The Oilers, much like the Stars, fell well short of playoff expectations last season. After making back-to-back trips to the Stanley Cup Final, Edmonton were bounced in the first round of the 2026 post season by the upstart Anaheim Ducks. It was the first time in the last five trips to the playoffs where the Oilers failed to win at least one series. Superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl did not pull any punches in their team assessment after the loss to the Ducks, publicly stating that the squad had to get better. General manager Stan Bowman made the controversial decision to fire head coach Kris Knoblauch and bring in Mike Babcock as they search for the missing ingredient to get Edmonton over the hump.

  Our guest today is Conor McGahey, Colorado Avalanche radio play-by-play announcer. The Avalanche have won the Central Division regular season title four times in the last six seasons, but only once in the last three, winning the Presidents’ Trophy in 2025-26 with 121 points (55-16-11). After winning their third Stanley Cup in 2022, they were stunned in the first round of the 2023 Playoffs by the Seattle Kraken and then bounced in both 2024 and 2025 by the Dallas Stars. In 2026, the Avs swept the Kings in the first round, then rolled over the Minnesota Wild in five games in the second round, but then crashed out in the Western Conference Final in a sweep at the hands of the Vegas Golden Knights. Right after the playoffs ended, general manager Chris MacFarland left to join the Nashville Predators, with president of hockey operations Joe Sakic stepping back into the day-to-day GM role. With departures of depth pieces Ross Colton, Jack Drury and Valeri Nichushkin, but signing Cale Makar to the largest contract extension in NHL history ($163.2M), are the Avalanche set up to retain their Presidents’ Trophy and take another kick at the Stanley Cup?

  The Other 31: Vancouver Canucks Our guest today is Thomas Drance, Canucks beat writer for The Athletic. In the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Vancouver Canucks beat the Nashville Predators in the first round and were one win away from advancing to the Western Conference Final, but lost to the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7 of the second round (after holding a 3-2 series lead). The next year they took a step back, missing out on the playoffs by six points, but they were still in the mix. Then last season, the Canucks fell off the cliff, finishing with the worst record in the NHL, 19 points below the second-worst team (Chicago). Oh yeah, and in January, they traded away all-world defenseman Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild. That has led to a major overhaul of the hockey operations department, with president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford stepping away from day-to-day operations and the firings of general manager Patrik Allvin and head coach Adam Foote (after just one season in charge behind the bench). Canucks legends Henrik and Daniel Sedin have been hired as co-presidents of hockey operations, Ryan Johnson has been elevated to general manager and Manny Malhotra hired as head coach. The rebuild has begun in Vancouver, the big question is, how long will it take?

  The Other 31: Utah Mammoth Our guest today is Matt McConnell, television play-by-play broadcaster for the Utah Mammoth. After coming up short in their first season in Salt Lake City, the Mammoth qualified for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, losing in the first round to the Vegas Golden Knights in six games. While two years might not seem like a long drought, it was actually much more dire. The Arizona Coyotes last qualified for a standard NHL playoff format in 2012, when they were still known as the Phoenix Coyotes. They advanced to the Western Conference Final before losing to the Los Angeles Kings in five games. Over the next 12 seasons in the desert, including the name change from Phoenix to Arizona, the Yotes only playoff appearance came in the expanded 2020 Bubble Playoff in Edmonton, where they upset the Nashville Predators in the qualifying round (3-1) and then lost to the Colorado Avalanche in five games in the first round. Now relocated to Utah, the Mammoth are considered a new franchise for record keeping purposes. But a lot of players, coaches and hockey operations staff made the move from Arizona. Now that this group has tasted the NHL post season, you have to think the hunger has only grown for the Mammoth to take the next step.

The Sharks entered the NHL as an expansion franchise in 1991-92 and were dreadful (39 points their first season and 24 points their second). They first qualified for the playoffs in Year 3, and beat the Detroit Red Wings in the first round. Over their first 27 seasons in the league, San Jose made the post season 21 times, missing out on just six occasions. Since then the organization has fallen on hard times, currently suffering a seven-year playoff drought, while previously they had never missed the playoffs more than two consecutive years. However, things are turning around for the Sharks. They drafted franchise cornerstone Macklin Celebrini first overall in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft and just signed him to a massive five-year, $94 million contract, with an $18.8M AAV, which (ever so briefly) made him the highest paid player in the NHL. San Jose missed out on the 2026 playoffs by four points and they have added more veterans this offseason. Are the Sharks ready to break out of rebuild mode and compete for post season glory once again?
