Our World This Week
Floating Our Boat
0
Our World This Week is a mostly weekly podcast from Fran and Rich, creators of the Floating Our Boat YouTube channel. They have been cruising the canals and rivers of Britain aboard their narrowboat Laura Maisie for eight years. In this podcast, they talk honestly about life afloat, the everyday moments that shape their weeks, and the thoughts that surface when you choose a life less ordinary. More personal and candid than their videos, it offers a quieter window into their lives with reflections, stories, and occasional laughs.

De-teching, Jumble Sales, and the Five-Year Itch 16.04.2026 35minIn this episode, we dive into the highs and lows of a tech-induced sleepless night and the surprising joy of "de-teching." From the challenges of mastering a vintage-style digital audio player (don't call it an iPod!) to the nostalgic thrill of finding a wooden Spear & Jackson saw for a pound at the village jumble sale, we explore the balance between modern gadgets and old-school simplicity. We also celebrate a major milestone: five years since moving onto our boat, Laura Maisie. We reflect on the journey from our first boat, Constanze, to life in our "sardine tin" today. Plus, we discuss the hazards of 'Bluetooth waves', the absolute agony of a Chinese foot massage, and why you should never trust a ball of "mohair" without a burn test. Stick around for talk of allotments, library audiobooks, and our upcoming train trek across London with Archie the dog! Thanks for listening. Early Morning Cranes, A Good Cry, and a Bit of a Moan 10.04.2026 43minA slightly different one this week…We wake to the eerie, beautiful call of cranes just beyond the boat — a rare sight in the UK and something that still stops us in our tracks. From misty mornings and ancient landscapes to swallows returning and a surprise bittern sighting, it’s been a proper nature-filled week. But it’s not just about wildlife. We talk about the quiet kindness of people — strangers stepping in to help when it really matters — and how those small acts spread further than you think. There’s also a heartfelt chat about a book that genuinely moved us (Tuesdays with Morrie) and why it might just change the way you look at life and relationships. And, of course, it wouldn’t be one of our podcasts without a bit of a moan… this week it’s a big one.We finish on lighter things — spring weather (briefly!), Archie living his best life, and somehow… cheese dreams. If you enjoy these chats, please do follow/subscribe wherever you’re listening — it really helps us along. And feel free to get in touch:Thanks for listening. Small Victories: A £23 Dentist and the First Signs of Spring 06.03.2026 40minThis week we’re catching up on the small things that have filled our days recently.Fran has finally faced the dentist — expecting the worst and discovering it wasn’t nearly as bad as feared. Meanwhile the first real hints of spring are appearing around us: blossom on the trees, birds getting lively and the allotment beginning to wake up.We’ve been busy sowing seeds, experimenting with grow lights on the boat and enjoying the rare feeling that we might actually be ahead in the garden for once. There’s also a new fascination with ancient trees after discovering the Woodland Trust’s Ancient Tree Register, which has sent us looking at the landscape around us in a completely different way.Along the way we wander into memories of childhood freedom, playing outside until dark, tight blue jeans in the 1970s, and why debate and conversation seem harder to come by these days.Just a gentle chat about everyday life, the changing seasons, and the small things that catch our attention along the way. Thanks for listening. We’ve taken on a mooring on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal — not to settle permanently, but to slow down and protect the life we’re building with our allotment and creative work.We talk rain, blossom, spinning, sheds, funding for the canals, and finding contentment without constantly chasing miles.Sometimes freedom means moving less. Thanks for listening.
