This, he said, is putting pressure on the young, used market inventory at a time when many in-service helicopters are nearing their replacement cycles. He explained that since production lines for military and civil helicopters are often comingled, increasing demand from the former is also affecting OEM order books. Conflicts such as the Iran war may affect investment strategies, with some potential owners opting for short-term leases instead of ownership of newer helicopters like the Airbus H160 medium twin.“We can give the opportunity to any client to try them, so short-term lease, two, three years becomes a possibility on that type, so the client can really assess the aircraft and see if they want to move on with the acquisition,” Lubrano said.Another factor going forward in the year is the start of fire season in the U.S. and Europe, with many aircraft occupied with firefighting contracts. Rotorcraft dealers and completions houses are gearing up for that.https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/futureflight/2026-07-22/japanese-leasing-group-backs-archers-halo-utility-drone2.Japanese Leasing Group Backs Archer's Halo Utility DroneBy CHARLES ALCOCK • Managing EditorJuly 22, 2026Japanese leasing group Marubeni Aerospace is helping Archer Aviation find use cases for the Halo autonomous aircraft it unveiled at the Farnborough International Airshow this week. The hybrid-electric model is part of a family of dual tiltrotor drones being developed by Archer and Anduril that also includes the Thunder military platform launched on Monday.Archer has not confirmed any range or payload details for the Halo or Thunder, but said the hybrid-electric powertrain it has developed in-house will be sufficient “to support global self-deployment.”Alternatively, the company explained, the aircraft can be packed into a standard shipping container for transport by air, road, rail, or sea, offering the multi-modal transport logistics required to reach where it needs to be.The partners expect to begin test flights of the Thunder/Halo prototype in 2027, but have not said when they will begin deliveries. The companies said they have already flown what they described as “a full-scale surrogate aircraft.”Based on the powertrain Archer developed for its four-passenger Midnight eVTOL air taxi, the series’ hybrid-electric powertrain drives the rotors directly from electric motors and features a turbogenerator. The propulsion system also includes wing-mounted optimum-speed tiltrotors that vary the revolutions per minute to maintain efficiency through different phases of flight, reducing power demand and fuel burn in cruise as well as reducing noise to avoid detection by hostile forces during low-altitude approaches."Over the past eight years we've engineered, tested, and scaled the technology this platform is built on,” said Archer founder and CEO Adam Goldstein. “The powertrain, the batteries, the motors, the manufacturing. We partnered with Anduril to take all of that knowledge and build something new: a clean-sheet aircraft in a completely different class of range, speed and payload.”Archer envisages applications such as offshore energy support, freight deliveries, and humanitarian and medical support. The aircraft could also be deployed for various maritime missions."Currently, even in cargo transport operations that do not require onboard crew, flights are conducted with human pilots, absorbing the cost, scheduling constraints and human exposure that come with it," said Marubeni president and CEO Satoru Nakagawa. "Halo's unmanned, autonomous flight capabilities can address these challenges, and combined with its excellent range, payload capacity and VTOL capability, make it a highly suitable solution that we are pleased to introduce and support for our customers as a first strategic partner."https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/defense/2026-07-21/ahead-rest-mq-28-nears-australian-service3. Ahead of the Rest: MQ-28 Nears Australian ServiceBy DAVID DONALD • Contributor - UKJuly 22, 2026In 2028, the Royal Australian Air Force aims to become the first air arm in the world to field an advanced collaborative combat aircraft (CCA). Formerly known as the Loyal Wingman, the Boeing MQ-28 Ghost Bat has been developed entirely in Australia but has significant global opportunities, especially as it is arguably the most mature of the CCA programs. The MQ-28 first flew in February 2021, and the test fleet has accumulated some 230 hours over 200 sorties. Eight Block 1 aircraft were built, and the second of them—retired from test duties for some time—is on static display at the Farnborough International Airshow. The last three Block 1 air vehicles will follow shortly as six Block 2 aircraft take over the test burden.Among the Block 2’s improvements, the most obvious is a wing with 25% greater area, permitting an increase in maximum takeoff weight from 10,000 to 12,000 pounds and a corresponding rise in useful payload to 4,500 pounds. The internal weapons bays are longer, accommodating up to four Small Diameter Bombs or two missiles the size of the AIM-120 advanced medium-range air-to-air missile (AMRAAM). Boeing has developed a revised modular nose that allows different sensor payloads to be fitted, and a satcom antenna enables beyond-line-of-sight control.Boeing has established a production facility in Toowoomba, Queensland, which will initially build Block 2 aircraft. A Block 3 with further improvements is expected to enter production in 2029.The company’s test fleet has not flown that much, but because development is performed within the digital domain, testing is essentially a validation of modeling and results. Some notable capabilities have nevertheless been demonstrated in the air. In June 2025, an MQ-28 conducted find-fix-target missions in which it autonomously detected, tracked, and designated aerial targets within an assigned area.In December 2025, an MQ-28 destroyed a jet-powered drone target with an AIM-120 fired at the Woomera test range in South Australia. An operator aboard an RAAF E-7A Wedgetail airborne early warning and control aircraft controlled the CCA and authorized the engagement, while an F/A-18F Super Hornet provided targeting data across the networked force. Boeing is in talks with MBDA about launching a Meteor air-to-air missile from the MQ-28. Fit checks have been conducted, but no schedule has been set for the demonstration.Earlier this year, an MQ-28 flew three sorties from Naval Air Station Point Mugu in California in cooperation with the U.S. Navy, and in late June and early July the type took part in the Valiant Shield exercise in the Pacific. Nine sorties were flown from the island of Rota, north of Guam, among them operations with U.S. Air Force F-35s and F-15EXs. Three back-to-back sorties demonstrated a turnaround time between flights of just 19 minutes.International interest in the MQ-28 is high, and Boeing sees opportunities in many nations. In Germany, an industrial team has been formed to bid for air force requirements: Rheinmetall was named first as Boeing’s strategic partner, Rohde & Schwarz and Diehl Defence joined in June, and sensor and electronic warfare specialist Hensoldt has now completed the team. Internationally, Eaton (weapons launch and release systems) and Leonardo (Skyward infrared search-and-track sensors) have been named as partners.Boeing Australia designed the Ghost Bat as a simple aircraft with ease of operation and manufacturing in mind. Boeing Commercial Airplanes played a major role in designing the production system so that manufacturing facilities can be established easily and rapidly anywhere. For the MQ-28, the company favors small facilities in customer nations, allowing them to tailor their own air vehicles to national operational and sovereignty requirements.4. WoT? Experimental Elongated Airbus Wings To Fly Next Yearhttps://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/aerospace/2026-07-21/wot-experimental-elongated-airbus-wings-fly-next-yearBy CHARLOTTE BAILEY • WriterJuly 22, 2026Airbus has launched the next phase of its Wing of Tomorrow (WoT) development program, kicking off a three-year effort to assess the benefits and challenges of extended-length wingspans. With the first experimental folding wings due to commence assembly imminently, Airbus hopes to start testing the concept in flight on an Airbus A321neo testbed around the second half of next year.Wing efficiency is “one of the biggest levers we have to improve the performance of our aircraft,” Airbus technology project lead Richard MacPherson told reporters during a briefing at the Farnborough Airshow on Tuesday, adding that Wing of Tomorrow “has the potential to give the same, if not more, efficiency gains than next generation engines.” This program phase will analyze the performance benefits and aerodynamic qualities of longer wings, helping inform future narrowbody design decisions.Airbus has already started building various multi-meter-long devices intended to replace the upward-curving Sharklet wingtips that are standard on the A320 family. These will be built at Airbus’ Wing Technology Development Centre in Filton, England, before being flight-tested on its A321neo testbed in Toulouse, France.“In the air, these extension devices are going to replicate a folding wing that is latched and fully locked in its fully extended flight position,” MacPherson said. Separate ongoing ground-based demonstrations are exploring the mechanism by which a future wing might fold.Airbus validated early concepts through digital simulation, and MacPherson said the company has “performed intensive wind tunnel testing to really evaluate and optimize” different variants. Building on WoT concepts that pair a 17-meter (56-foot) main wing box with a five-meter (16-foot) folding section, he expects the extension devices “to be in that order of magnitude.”While Wing of Tomorrow lead Sue Partridge acknowledged that folding wings are nothing new—including within military applications—this technology has never been applied to a high-rate single-aisle commercial aircraft before. This phase comes as Airbus completes assembly of its first three ground-based wing demonstrators, which combine more than 100 technologies from 40 partners worldwide. Since 2014, the UK Aerospace Technology Institute program has put £227 million ($304 million) behind Wing of Tomorrow. The audio and content of this podcast shall not be used for AI model training or any other purposes. This, he said, is putting pressure on the young, used market inventory at a time when many in-service helicopters are nearing their replacement cycles.在评估今年上半年直升机市场状况时,卢布拉诺表示,各大原始设备制造商(OEM)漫长的生产交付周期,使最受欢迎机型的交付时间增加了数月,甚至数年。他指出,这一情况进一步加剧了机龄较新的二手直升机库存紧张,而与此同时,大量现役直升机也陆续进入更新换代阶段。He explained that since production lines for military and civil helicopters are often comingled, increasing demand from the former is also affecting OEM order books. Conflicts such as the Iran war may affect investment strategies, with some potential owners opting for short-term leases instead of ownership of newer helicopters like the Airbus H160 medium twin.卢布拉诺解释称,由于军用和民用直升机通常共用生产线,因此军用需求的增长也会影响OEM的订单安排。此外,像伊朗战争这样的地区冲突,也可能影响客户的投资策略。一些潜在买家可能更倾向于选择短期租赁,而不是直接购买像空中客车H160这样的中型双发直升机。“We can give the opportunity to any client to try them, so short-term lease, two, three years becomes a possibility on that type, so the client can really assess the aircraft and see if they want to move on with the acquisition,” Lubrano said.卢布拉诺表示:“我们能够为客户提供体验飞机性能的机会。通过两至三年的短期租赁,客户可以在实际运营中全面评估飞机是否符合自身需求,再决定是否采购。”Another factor going forward in the year is the start of fire season in the U.S. and Europe, with many aircraft occupied with firefighting contracts. Rotorcraft dealers and completions houses are gearing up for that.展望下半年,另一个影响市场的重要因素是美国和欧洲进入森林火灾季。届时,大量直升机将投入灭火任务。为此,为应对即将到来的森林火灾季,直升机经销商及飞机改装服务商正加紧部署相关工作,以满足即将到来的市场需求。https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/futureflight/2026-07-22/japanese-leasing-group-backs-archers-halo-utility-drone2.Japanese Leasing Group Backs Archer's Halo Utility DroneBy CHARLES ALCOCK • Managing EditorJuly 22, 2026Japanese leasing group Marubeni Aerospace is helping Archer Aviation find use cases for the Halo autonomous aircraft it unveiled at the Farnborough International Airshow this week. The hybrid-electric model is part of a family of dual tiltrotor drones being developed by Archer and Anduril that also includes the Thunder military platform launched on Monday.日本租赁集团丸红航空航天正协助Archer Aviation为其本周在范堡罗国际航展发布的Halo自主飞行器探索更多应用场景。Halo是一款混合动力电动飞行器,属于Archer与Anduril联合研发的双倾转旋翼无人机系列的一员。该系列还包括Archer于本周一发布的Thunder军用平台。Archer has not confirmed any range or payload details for the Halo or Thunder, but said the hybrid-electric powertrain it has developed in-house will be sufficient “to support global self-deployment.”Archer尚未公布Halo和Thunder的具体航程及载荷数据,但表示,公司自主研发的混合动力电推进系统足以支持飞行器实现全球范围内的自主部署。Alternatively, the company explained, the aircraft can be packed into a standard shipping container for transport by air, road, rail, or sea, offering the multi-modal transport logistics required to reach where it needs to be.此外,公司介绍称,该机还可装入标准集装箱,通过航空、公路、铁路或海运等多种运输方式进行转运,从而通过跨运输方式的物流,快速运抵任务区域。The partners expect to begin test flights of the Thunder/Halo prototype in 2027, but have not said when they will begin deliveries. The companies said they have already flown what they described as “a full-scale surrogate aircraft.”双方计划于2027年开始对Thunder/Halo原型机进行试飞,但尚未公布正式交付时间。两家公司表示,目前已完成一架他们称之为“全尺寸验证机”的飞行测试。Based on the powertrain Archer developed for its four-passenger Midnight eVTOL air taxi, the series’ hybrid-electric powertrain drives the rotors directly from electric motors and features a turbogenerator. The propulsion system also includes wing-mounted optimum-speed tiltrotors that vary the revolutions per minute to maintain efficiency through different phases of flight, reducing power demand and fuel burn in cruise as well as reducing noise to avoid detection by hostile forces during low-altitude approaches. Over the past eight years we've engineered, tested, and scaled the technology this platform is built on,” said Archer founder and CEO Adam Goldstein. “The powertrain, the batteries, the motors, the manufacturing. With the first experimental folding wings due to commence assembly imminently, Airbus hopes to start testing the concept in flight on an Airbus A321neo testbed around the second half of next year. Wing efficiency is “one of the biggest levers we have to improve the performance of our aircraft,” Airbus technology project lead Richard MacPherson told reporters during a briefing at the Farnborough Airshow on Tuesday, adding that Wing of Tomorrow “has the potential to give the same, if not more, efficiency gains than next generation engines.” This program phase will analyze the performance benefits and aerodynamic qualities of longer wings, helping inform future narrowbody design decisions. Airbus has already started building various multi-meter-long devices intended to replace the upward-curving Sharklet wingtips that are standard on the A320 family. These will be built at Airbus’ Wing Technology Development Centre in Filton, England, before being flight-tested on its A321neo testbed in Toulouse, France. “In the air, these extension devices are going to replicate a folding wing that is latched and fully locked in its fully extended flight position,” MacPherson said. Separate ongoing ground-based demonstrations are exploring the mechanism by which a future wing might fold. Airbus validated early concepts through digital simulation, and MacPherson said the company has “performed intensive wind tunnel testing to really evaluate and optimize” different variants. Building on WoT concepts that pair a 17-meter (56-foot) main wing box with a five-meter (16-foot) folding section, he expects the extension devices “to be in that order of magnitude.” While Wing of Tomorrow lead Sue Partridge acknowledged that folding wings are nothing new—including within military applications—this technology has never been applied to a high-rate single-aisle commercial aircraft before.“未来机翼”项目负责人Sue Partridge表示,折叠机翼并非全新技术,在军用航空领域已有较为成熟的应用。 This phase comes as Airbus completes assembly of its first three ground-based wing demonstrators, which combine more than 100 technologies from 40 partners worldwide. Since 2014, the UK Aerospace Technology Institute program has put £227 million ($304 million) behind Wing of Tomorrow. -

Airbus Sees New Routes and Aging Fleets Driving DemandBy CHARLES ALCOCK• Managing EditorJuly 8, 2026Airbus identified a combination of airlines’ desire to expand their networks with longer, thinner routes connecting smaller cities and a growing need to replace aging aircraft as key factors behind rising demand in its latest Global Market Forecast (GMF) released on July 8. Between 2026 and 2045, the European airframer is now predicting 42,060 passenger airliner deliveries in response to a projected twofold increase in revenue passenger kilometers to 21.3 trillion.Presenting this year’s GMF update to reporters in London, Antonio da Costa, Airbus’ v-p for market analysis and forecast, highlighted flight demand foundations such as rising personal wealth in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. He pointed to anticipated growth in yearly flights per capita in countries such as Nigeria, Egypt, India, South Africa, Brazil, Indonesia, Colombia, China, and South Korea.Part of this demand curve comes from people living and working outside their home country to make trips home to visit friends and relatives. This trend, Da Costa explained, is partly responsible for the expansion of direct air services between smaller cities, allowing passengers to avoid airline hubs.In 2025, according to Airbus, 55% of all city pairs were new routes that had not existed 20 years earlier. Da Costa pointed to an additional 532 airports with scheduled airline services that were not on the global route network in 2005, including Sucre in Brazil, Daocheng in China, and the Vietnamese resort destination of Thanh Hoa.For Airbus, these GMF data points were the cue for a sales pitch on the route-launching potential for its newest narrowbody offering, the A220, which it said has made more than 400 new thin routes viable in North America, Europe, and Africa. The aircraft manufacturer also maintained that airlines have been eager to exploit significant range increases for the A350 (+1,900 nm), A330 (+3,000 nm), A321 (+2,500 nm), and A220 (+600 nm) families to add longer routes to networks.Beyond these market trends, however, Airbus sees an increasingly urgent need to replace aging aircraft with a higher proportion (47%) of the projected new-production deliveries through 2045 expected to be made for this reason. These will include 15,580 single-aisle airliners and 4,240 widebodies.Airbus Sees Longer, Thinner Routes and Aging Fleets Drive Airliner Demand | Aviation International News2. Spike Aerospace: FAA Supersonic NPRM Steps Toward New EraBy KERRY LYNCH•Editor, AIN monthly magazineJuly 7, 2026Supersonic business jet hopeful Spike Aerospace is hailing last week’s release of the FAA notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) on supersonic flight over land as taking a step closer to making such operations a reality. The NPRM, Spike added, marked the “first significant modernization of U.S. regulations governing civil supersonic flight in more than 50 years” and “represents meaningful progress toward a vision that has guided our company since its founding.”Release of the NPRM is critical for Spike, Boom, and other potential entrants in a niche long stalled in the civil aviation market. Spike has been designing a Mach 1.6 S-512 Diplomat business jet that could take to the skies later this decade with potential service entry in the early 2030s.The company praised the FAA’s approach of shifting toward a performance-based framework that recognizes aircraft technology advances while balancing noise concerns of the community below. “Although the FAA’s proposal does not authorize unrestricted commercial operations, it acknowledges that advances in aerodynamics, propulsion, computational modeling, and aircraft design justify reexamining regulations written for another era,” it said.Spike further stressed that the proposal is not a destination but a step toward a modern regulatory framework. Released on June 30, the proposal is out for comment until August 17. Covering only supersonic cruise over land, the NPRM would permit these operations without a special authorization if sonic boom overpressure at the surface stays no higher than 0.11 pounds per square foot. Proposed landing and takeoff standards are anticipated later this year, with the goal of finalizing both rules by mid-2027.By relying on a performance-based framework, the NPRM encourages innovation based on that measurable performance, Spike maintained, but noted that it preserves rigorous certification for sonic boom, airport noise, and environmental emissions. The company called the FAA’s initial prohibitions “the most practical solution,” reflecting the technologies of that time. But some 50 years later, that has changed with the use of computational fluid dynamics, advanced acoustic modeling, artificial intelligence, digital engineering, high-performance computing, and new manufacturing techniques, all of which provide a better understanding of aircraft noise, Spike added. However, Spike also acknowledged that public acceptance will determine the success of supersonic flight over land. This makes the attention that the NPRM pays to Mach cutoff particularly important to ensure that shock waves generated by supersonic flight refract upward before reaching the ground.Spike Aerospace: FAA Supersonic Aircraft Proposal Steps Toward New Era | Aviation International News3. Turbine Bizav Accident Fatalities Flat in 1st HalfBy GORDON GILBERT•Contributor - Accidents and RegulationsJuly 6, 2026The 81 fatalities in the first half of this year stemming from turbine business airplane accidents worldwide remained unchanged from a year ago, according to AIN research. But the distribution of fatalities within segments did change year over year.Non-U.S.-registered business jets were the only segment to witness a significant decrease in accidents in the first six months, while fatalities from accidents involving U.S.-registered business jets ticked up by one more than first-half 2025.In the first six months, nine people died in three fatal accidents involving U.S.-registered business jets, including one person in the first fatality on record involving a Part 91K fractional ownership operation. Twenty-six people lost their lives in five fatal crashes of U.S.-registered business turboprops in the first half, up from 18 fatalities in five accidents in the same timeframe last year.Thirty-nine people perished in five accidents of non-U.S.-registered turboprops in the first six months, including all 14 aboard a chartered Cessna Caravan that crashed in South Sudan on April 27, and a pilot and 10 jumpers on a Pilatus Turbo Porter that crashed in France on June 28. In the first half of last year, there were six accidents involving non-U.S.-registered turboprops that killed 40 people.Turbine Bizav Accident Fatalities Flat in 1st Half | Aviation International News4. Seal of Accreditation Vets Standards for Air Charter FirmsBy CHARLES ALCOCK•Managing EditorJuly 2, 2026The Air Charter Association (The ACA) has launched a Seal of Accreditation process to indicate that its member companies have been assessed as meeting the standards of professionalism set out in the industry group’s Code of Practice. All new member companies are subject to accreditation checks, which are largely based on endorsement by existing members to verify that companies are reliable and operate legally. To be considered for membership, companies must be able to show they have been trading for at least 12 months. Those applying within two years need to be supported by managers or directors from two current corporate members, and also present two independent trade references. Charter aircraft operators need references from brokers they have recently worked with and, conversely, brokers need endorsements from operators.“Referees must affirm they have worked with the applicant company and found them to be trustworthy, honest, and professional,” a spokesperson for The ACA explained after the program was announced last week. “They believe them to uphold the highest industry standards and are confident they comply with The ACA Code of Practice and, to the best of their knowledge, have not been involved in any illegal practices.”The ACA’s Code of Practice requires that companies operate in a legal, ethical, and professional manner, behaving in a transparent and fair way as well as “respecting and investing in the development and well-being of their employees.” The document also sets out expectations for how companies manage contracts, as well as trip quotes and commissions, and how services are marketed to clients. All existing ACA members hold the Seal of Accreditation.Seal of Accreditation Vets Standards for Air Charter Flight Providers | Aviation International NewsThe audio and content of this podcast shall not be used for AI model training or any other purposes. Solyu Company Signs 4 Electric Aircraft 09.07.2026 9minKorean Leasing Group Signs For eViator Electric AircraftSouth Korean leasing group Solyu Company has agreed to buy up to 40 of the MDA1 eViator electric commuter being developed by German start up MD Aircraft. Under a letter of intent announced on July 1, Solyu committed to an initial 20 examples of the nine-seater, with options for another 20.MD Aircraft is targeting a first flight with a technology demonstrator in 2028. In November, during its Series A funding round, the company reported that it had progressed from preliminary to detailed design and was producing moulds for its horizontal stabilizer. With a battery-electric propulsion system that has yet to be fully defined, the MDA1 is expected to have a range of up to around 216 nm. The design features an interchangeable “power bay” for changing out batteries that could potentially be adapted for future hydrogen-electric or hybrid-electric configurations.According to Solyu, it will deploy the eViators to support new regional air mobility services in Korea and other countries. The company has previously signed sales agreements with electric seaplane developer Jekta, as well as with Eviation for the now defunct Alice nine-seater and France’s Aura Aero for the planned 19-seat ERA hybrid-electric regional airliner. It also has an agreement with Japanese eVTOL aircraft developer SkyDrive for its three-seat model.“This letter of intent represents an important milestone in our strategy to advance sustainable aviation globally,” said Solyu president Andrew Claerbout. “The MDA1 combines operational efficiency, environmental responsibility, and regional connectivity that aligns with our vision for the future of air transportation. We look forward to working closely with MD Aircraft as the program progresses toward certification and entry into service.”Aviation Coalition Supports California Fuel Tax BillA coalition of six aviation associations including NATA, AOPA, EAA, GAMA, NBAA, and VAI sent a letter of support for California Senate Bill 661, which would curb decades of aviation fuel tax diversion in the state. The bill would move California toward compliance with FAA requirements that aviation fuel tax revenue be used solely for aviation purposes, according to the June 24 letter to bill sponsor Sen. Melissa Hurtado (D-California). The associations specifically backed Senate Bill 661’s allocation of 20% of revenue to general aviation airports.“The state’s 214 general aviation airports offer tremendous public benefit, providing essential support for firefighting, disaster relief, medical care, and law enforcement services; enabling local business development and job creation; and providing air transportation in communities without scheduled air service,” the associations wrote.NATA’s managing director of industry affairs, Juliet Jordan, testified before the California Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee, which advanced the bill unanimously. Senate Bill 661 next heads to the Appropriations Committee before consideration by the full assembly.WingX: Bizjet Usage Flat Ahead of Holiday WeekendGlobal business jet activity declined last week by 0.7% compared to the previous week, according to the latest weekly usage report from industry data tracker WingX. However, activity was up 3.7% from a year ago.North America was flat year over year, up just 0.2% overall. While California flights were down 2.3%, activity in Florida increased by 5.7%. Thus far for 2026, larger aircraft, including ultra-long-range and super-midsize jets, have fared better than their smaller siblings, up 9.4% and 8.5%, respectively. In Europe, activity declined for the second straight week, down 2.6%. While France led in usage (+6.6%), Italy (-13.2%), Germany (-6.6%), and Switzerland (-1.3%) all saw decreases. Business jet usage for the rest of the world was relatively static.Looking ahead to this weekend in the U.S., New York’s business jet traffic consistently contracts over the Independence Day holiday, according to the JetNet subsidiary. This year, however, the holiday lands on a Saturday, and the city is averaging 1,300 arrivals over a typical weekend this summer. Two other events could affect the usual drawdown in traffic for July 4: Taylor Swift’s wedding and a FIFA World Cup match in New Jersey, both of which could pull additional traffic into the New York area that would not otherwise see a lot of activity.South Africa’s Soterjets Launches Fractional ProgramSoterJets, a subsidiary of South Africa’s CFS Aviation Group, has launched a fractional aircraft ownership program that the company said is the first of its kind in Africa. The program’s first aircraft, a Pilatus PC-12 NG, was delivered in April and is now fully subscribed by four co-owners.“For many years, fractional ownership has been an underserved opportunity in the regional business aviation market,” said CFS Aviation Group CEO Justin Reeves. “The speed at which we fully subscribed and successfully delivered our first aircraft demonstrates both the demand for this model and the confidence that investors have placed in the SoterJets proposition.”SoterJets said it has secured a significant commitment toward a second PC-12 turboprop single. Co-owners acquire a beneficial interest in an aircraft while SoterJets manages operational requirements, including crew, maintenance, airworthiness compliance, insurance, and administration. The program bills for occupied flight hours and fixed monthly management fees, according to SoterJets.CFS Aviation Group has operated and supported PC-12s since 2007. SoterJets said future preowned PC-12 additions will be selected to the same standard ahead of delivery of its first new-production PC-12 PRO in 2028. -
航空联合体支持加州燃油税法案由NATA(美国国家航空运输协会)、AOPA(美国航空器拥有者及驾驶员协会)、EAA(美国实验航空器协会)、GAMA(美国通用航空制造商协会)、NBAA(美国国家商务航空协会)和VAI(垂直起降航空器协会)等六家航空协会组成的联合体,致信支持加州参议院第661号法案(SB 661)。 -

FAA Dashboard Provides View into ATC ModernizationBy KERRY LYNCH • Editor, AIN monthly magazineJune 1, 2026The FAA has rolled out a dashboard detailing more than 10,000 air traffic control projects ongoing throughout the National Airspace System (NAS). To be updated monthly, the dashboard provides descriptions of each project and how those efforts will improve the NAS. Also, the website includes an interactive map, a progress tracker, and a local impact search engine by location.“The FAA is undertaking the most significant transformation of America’s air traffic control system in generations, and we are committed to being transparent and accountable every step of the way,” said FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford. “The American people deserve a clear view of how these investments are being executed and the progress being made to modernize our skies.”Among the projects are the replacement of core infrastructure, radar, software, hardware, and telecommunications at 4,600 sites nationwide. This involves new radars, radios, surface surveillance systems, electronic flight strips, and voice switches. Alongside this, the FAA is replacing old copper telecommunications lines with fiber optic cable, wireless, and satellite technologies.“One of the reasons past air traffic control modernization efforts failed was a lack of transparency,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who added that surging demand underscores the importance of the work.NBAA praised the effort. “We are pleased to see the administration continuing to make progress on the most significant transformation of our National Airspace System (NAS) since the dawn of the jet age,” said the industry group’s president and CEO, Ed Bolen. “This project is a national imperative, and the new, user-friendly dashboard is a helpful tool to monitor and measure the work being done to enhance the safety and efficiency of the NAS for all stakeholders and ensure that America remains the world’s aviation leader for decades to come.”FAA Dashboard Provides View into ATC Modernization | Aviation International News2. Defeating Spies in the SkyBy DALE SMITH • Contributor - Business AviationJune 1, 2026While it might sound like the plot of a Cold War-era spy novel, the reality is that electronic trackers, listening devices, micro-cameras, bribes, and even—metaphorically speaking—shady characters in long trench coats have become major problems within the business aviation world.“With business aviation, we are typically dealing with high-net-worth individuals or high-value/high-stakes information, so espionage has become a bigger problem than most people think,” said J.D. LeaSure, president and CEO of counter-espionage company ComSec. “Within the aircraft’s cabin, you have a great concentration of sensitive data, intellectual property, and very personal information. And it’s all very valuable to someone.”“The most sensitive decisions start as a simple conversation,” added Dean Cvetkoski, COO and director of activation for Activion Defence Systems, a technical surveillance counter-measure (TSCM) workplace awareness and training provider. “If an adversary can capture those discussions through human sources or covert surveillance devices, they gain intelligence without ever touching the network.”Flight departments may have solid cybersecurity protocols in place, and believe their aircraft and passengers are safe from any cyber-eavesdropping or hacking. But experts say that’s the first mistake that too many business aircraft operators make.Cybercrime and espionage can be linked, but they are not the same thing. And because of that, cyber-hacking into a passenger’s phone or email is way down the list of how today’s espionage adversaries will try to swipe the information they want.“Espionage is the unlawful and unethical acquisition of a person’s or company’s data, trade secret, or proprietary information,” LeaSure said, “anything adversaries can get that will give them an advantage or competitive edge.”For a variety of reasons, data stolen from a company doesn’t get big headlines. As an example, such an event can undermine investor confidence in the company’s future business plans. However, the FBI has highlighted estimates from the Commission on the Theft of Intellectual Property that consistently place the annual losses driven by counterfeiting, piracy, and theft of trade secrets between $225 billion and $600 billion in the U.S. alone.“Unlike traditional theft, espionage is designed to remain invisible. The attacker does not want the victim to know their information has been taken. They want to listen, observe, and collect intelligence over time quietly,” Cvetkoski said. “Boardroom discussions, aircraft cabin conversations, and executive travel plans can reveal insights that are far more valuable than any database.”Defeating Spies in the Sky | Aviation International News3. GJC: Q1 Bizjet Market Stays Strong Despite Iran ConflictBy KERRY LYNCH • Editor, AIN monthly magazineMay 27, 2026Despite the geopolitical uncertainties, business jet market fundamentals remained healthy and demand strong with an increase in aircraft departures, growth in OEM backlogs, and stable preowned available inventory in the first quarter, according to Global Jet Capital’s (GJC) latest market brief. In addition, the business jet financier is optimistic that the strong underpinnings of the economy is setting the industry up for continued health throughout the year. GJC noted that even with the conflict in the Middle East, the global economy sustained steady GDP growth of 2.7% in the first quarter. This served as a backdrop for broad-based growth in the business jet departures, which were up 3.8% year over year (YOY) in the first three months of the year. Meanwhile, business jet OEM backlogs jumped 19.3% YOY in the first quarter, with the four manufacturers that reported results reaching $57.1 billion.Available preowned inventory was down to 6.7% of the overall fleet, from 7.2% a year ago. And, bluebook values strengthened by 1.1%. However, GJC also reported potential headwinds in combined new and preowned jet transactions, with dollar volume off by 27.3%, but said this may reflect the timing of data reporting.GJC pointed out the economic roils stemming from the Middle East conflict as Brent crude oil prices skyrocketed 106.5%, and the U.S. Volatility Index (VIX) increased 68.9%. Even so, it added, “The broader economic foundation remained firm,” as global GDP increased. “Going forward, analysts expect the global economy to remain resilient so long as there is no material change in the status of the Middle East conflict or its impact on energy markets. With steady economic growth and the wealth creation that accompanies it, the business jet market should be well supported in 2026.”North America led global growth of business jet departures with a 4.3% YOY increase, while the rest of the world combined for a 2.5% increase. Fractional operations drove this growth, GJC noted. “This strong performance reflects the consistent expansion of the business aviation user base over the past five years,” it said. “Supported by the industry’s core value propositions—personal safety, flexibility, productivity, and comfort—flight operations are expected to remain steady in 2026.”As for OEM backlogs, orders came from private users in addition to fleet operators. The nearly 20% increase came even as the four manufacturers that report first-quarter results also reported an increase in deliveries. This kept book-to-bill above 1:1. Lead times for aircraft remain in the 18-to-24-month range.Pointing to the nearly 30% decline YOY in transaction dollar volume across the new and preowned business jet markets, GJC said the downturn followed an active end of 2025, when dollar volume surged by 19.3%. As for the first quarter results, “This decline reflects real trends in the market, including continued supply chain and labor constraints,” GJC said. However, it also cautioned that “a significant proportion of the decline may be attributable to delays in official data reporting. As additional transactions are reported, we expect Q1 2026 results to fall more in line with historical trends.”GJC: Business Jet Market Stays Strong in Q1 Despite Middle East Conflict | Aviation International News4. NTSB Shines Spotlight on Wet Runway SafetyBy AMY WILDER • WriterMay 27, 2026Three new NTSB safety recommendations call for the FAA to make changes to how runway conditions are assessed during heavy rainfall, warning that pilots face a greater risk for overruns under the current assessment system. These recommendations follow NTSB investigations of 11 runway overrun accidents and incidents from 2008 through 2022 that occurred after landings on wet runways. In nine of these overruns, a shortfall in the measure of the runway’s slipperiness—the wheel braking friction coefficient—most likely resulted from moderate to heavy rainfall intensities and the associated increased water depths on the runways. Low runway friction was cited as a causal or contributing factor in eight of the 11 overruns, the report says. The NTSB recommended that the FAA update its runway condition assessment matrix (RCAM) to account for the progressive decrease in the wheel braking friction coefficient associated with increasing rainfall intensity. Pilots and dispatchers rely on the matrix to determine how much runway is needed to stop after landing on a wet surface. Also among the recommendations is that the FAA add rainfall intensity descriptors for aviation weather reports “to identify rainfall intensities that can substantially exceed the current heavy rain threshold of 0.3 inches per hour.” In six of the overruns analyzed, rainfall measured between 1.3 and 20 times the rate that triggers a heavy rain designation. The NTSB’s third recommendation calls for the FAA to incorporate the new rainfall descriptors into the RCAM once they are established.Aviation weather reports top out at “heavy rain” as a descriptor, leaving pilots without terminology to distinguish between rainfall that barely crosses the threshold and rainfall that may be 20 times that rate. The report suggested possible new descriptors, such as “heavy +” or “heavy ++,” allowing the RCAM to assign more nuanced runway condition codes as rainfall intensifies. In one of the investigations referenced in the report, the 2019 runway overrun of a Boeing 737 in Jacksonville, Florida, the NTSB determined the probable cause was, in part, “an extreme loss of braking friction due to heavy rain and the water depth on the ungrooved runway, which resulted in viscous hydroplaning.” At the time, rainfall was measuring two to eight times the rate defined as “heavy” rain.Another example involved a 2016 Embraer Phenom 300 landing overrun in Sugar Land, Texas, where rainfall was recorded at 4.2 to 6.0 inches per hour, between 14 and 20 times the rate that defines heavy rain.In extreme rainfall conditions, braking capability can deteriorate so severely that landing should not be attempted, the NTSB concluded.NTSB Shines Spotlight on Runway Safety during Heavy Rain | Aviation International NewsThe audio and content of this podcast shall not be used for AI model training or any other purposes. NTSB Shines Spotlight on Runway Safety during Heavy Rain | Aviation International News本播客的音频及内容不得用于AI模型训练等用途。 -

Testing progressed from below 15 knots to approximately 20 knots groundspeed, with the team adding simultaneous four-axis maneuvers as the envelope expanded.According to Eve, the aircraft logged more than 100 flight-test points during the phase, reached 215 feet agl, and flew for up to 3 minutes and 48 seconds in a single sortie. Eve said it also demonstrated autoland and a “simplified fly-by-wire mode” for the first time. The company described the simplified mode as a secondary layer of the flight control system that activates when the normal mode is unavailable.Noise levels came in as expected, while the propulsion and battery systems exceeded expectations, the company said. “Across 59 flights, we confirmed stable hover performance and predictable control behavior within the envelope, while expanding our understanding of loads, aerodynamics, propulsion, and energy management,” Eve CEO Johann Bordais said in a company statement.Ground tests are next, with the transition flights block expected to begin in July or August, when the prototype will attempt its first transitions between hover and wingborne cruise flight. “Completing hover and low speed testing gives us high confidence data to validate and refine our aerodynamic, propulsion, and load models,” said Marcelo Basile, Eve’s head of testing. “With planned ground tests next, we will be ready to begin transition flights, in which we validate the lifter-pusher synchronization before moving on to the cruise phase.”A crewed type-conforming prototype is expected to follow, with Eve and parent company Embraer engaged with both ANAC and the FAA on the certification path toward commercial operations. Eve has said certification and entry into service are now expected in 2028.新闻2:https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/business-aviation/2026-05-19/mexico-approves-hondajet-apmg-s-upgrade-programMexico Approves HondaJet APMG S Upgrade ProgramMay 19, 2026Mexico’s Federal Civil Aviation Agency has approved the latest version of Honda Aircraft’s Advanced Performance Modification Group (APMG) upgrade for classic and earlier APMG-upgraded HondaJets based in the country. The APMG S package can be installed at Honda Aircraft’s headquarters service center in Greensboro, North Carolina, or any of the 21 authorized service centers, including Mexico-based Avemex.Performance enhancements with the APMG S upgrade include a 300-pound mtow increase to 10,700 pounds; the advanced steering augmentation system nosewheel mod for improved handling and crosswind capability; and Garmin avionics improvements with faster processing speed, TOLD management for computing V-speeds, climb/approach gradients, required runway length, and other features, as well as Garmin’s Flight Stream 510 for wireless flight plan transfer.Other modifications include removing wing fences and increasing the horizontal stabilizer’s span. Compared to the classic HondaJet, the APMG-modified jet requires 440 feet less required runway length, and it also has steep approach certification, according to Honda Aircraft.“We are excited to provide our customers in Mexico the opportunity to upgrade their aircraft with the advanced technology and performance of more recent iterations of the award-winning HondaJet,” said Amod Kelkar, senior v-p and chief commercial officer at Honda Aircraft. “We are pursuing additional international certifications and hope to expand availability of the APMG S upgrade package to more HondaJet customers around the world soon.”新闻3:https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/business-aviation/2026-05-19/jefferies-available-used-bizjet-inventories-declineGefferies: Available Used Bizjet Inventory DwindlesMAY 19, 2026The available used business jet inventory is down by 11% this month year over year (YOY) to 1,029, and by 12% over the last six months, according to the latest report from analyst Jefferies. Citing its own data and analysis, along with that of Amstat, Jefferies further noted that the inventory is down by 37% when counting only younger jets—those less than seven years out of production. However, both the overall and young inventories did tick up from April by 1% and 7%, respectively.Driving the YOY inventory decline were available heavy jets, down by 26%. Available used light jets dipped by 8% and midsize by 5%. As a result, pricing is up by 4% YOY, even if softened by 2% from April.Considering just the younger models, available inventory remains in the historically low range of 2.1% of the overall fleet.By manufacturer product lines, young Gulfstream model availability is down to 35 units, dropping 43% YOY as a result of a contraction in G650s on the market (nine units in May versus 28 a year ago). Similarly, available Bombardier fleets were down 41% to 37 units with fewer Globals and Learjets for sale.Textron Aviation’s Cessna Citation line accounted for 44 units for sale, down 40%, and available Embraer units decreased by 28% to 29 aircraft. Dassault Aviation’s Falcon inventory slid by 23% to 17 units. These declines are noted in average list prices, with Citations increasing 8% YOY and Falcons by 7.4%. Gulfstream model pricing ticked up 3%, while Bombardier aircraft list pricing is up 1.5% overall.新闻4:https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/aerospace/2026-05-15/eu-rules-risk-energy-intensive-saf-production-strategiesEU Rules Risk Energy-intensive SAF Production StrategiesMay 15, 2026A report from Sweden’s Chalmers University of Technology has cautioned that under existing European Union (EU) rules, fossil-free aviation fuels may become more expensive and energy-intensive. After analysing different methods for producing synthetic methanol, the study published this week concluded that regulatory bias risks ‘locking in’ less resource-efficient manufacturing methods.According to the study, biomass gasification costs around €820 ($952) a tonne with an energy efficiency of around 46%. Combustion with carbon capture (with or without simultaneous energy production) costs around €1,055 and €1,495 respectively, offering a lower efficiency of approximately 37%.While Chalmers University argues that gasification can use residual material more efficiently, limited biomass feedstocks are at risk of being diverted elsewhere. According to co-author Henrik Thunman, the study “highlights a structural issue in EU energy and industrial policy” where “regulation risks working against its own objectives.”Although minimal commercial SAF is currently produced via gasification, it is expected to account for some 35 percent of all aviation fuel in the EU by 2050.The audio and content of this podcast shall not be used for AI model training or any other purposes. It can carry 78 to 97 passengers with a range of 2,225 to 3,700 kilometers, and made its maiden flight on June 28, 2016. It performs well on short and narrow runways, at high-temperature and high-altitude airports, and has strong crosswind resistance. By December 2025, it has operated over 700 routes, carrying tens of thousands of passengers daily and connecting more than 100 cities, achieving a key breakthrough in the commercial operation of domestic jet aircraft. The C909 is expanding rapidly in Southeast Asia. Lion Air Group’s TransNusa, Lao Airlines and VietJet Air have put it into service, opening nearly 20 routes covering more than 20 cities. TransNusa now has a fleet of five C909 aircraft, carrying over 430,000 passengers safely with an on-time rate above 90 percent, setting a record daily aircraft utilization of 15.88 hours. It has launched direct international routes from Manado to Guangzhou, Shanghai Pudong and Shenzhen. The Manado-Guangzhou route of about 2,700 kilometers is the longest international direct flight record of the C909.The development of the C909 has helped China master core technologies in jet aircraft design, manufacturing, operation and maintenance, international airworthiness and extreme environment adaptation. It has completed the whole industrial process of jet airliner development and operation, filling the domestic gap and laying a solid foundation for the development of China’s large aircraft industry.新闻2:https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/business-aviation/2026-05-04/aviation-coalition-aims-rein-slackline-hazardsAviation Coalition Aims To Rein in Slackline HazardsMay 5, 2026Striking obstacles at low altitude ranks among the biggest safety risks for helicopter operations. On January 2, a fatal helicopter crash happened near Superior, Arizona in the United States, when the aircraft hit a slackline strung across a canyon. Following the deadly accident, VAI (Vertical Aviation International), AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) and the National Agricultural Aviation Association have formed an aviation coalition. They are calling on the FAA to revise procedures to better identify slackline hazards and deliver timely alerts to pilots.Slacklining is a sport in which people walk along a flat webbed strap. The slackline in this accident was set up 600 feet above the ground across the canyon, fitted with a backup safety rope for participants. Windsocks and LED lights were also fixed on a signal line to mark the exact position of the slackline.A formal NOTAM with key safety information was issued on time as required. However, aviation professionals point out the accident pilot most likely never viewed the notice. The NOTAM only used Superior Municipal Airport as the location code. Pilots could easily miss it without targeted airport or route NOTAM search, and no relevant results could be found from nearby private departure airports. The notice could only be retrieved by manual airport input or route planning functions. The aviation coalition has sent a letter to the FAA Administrator, requesting a review of current slackline notification practices. It also calls for improved NOTAM presentation with graphic map displays on digital devices and avionics, plus enhanced public outreach and compliance supervision for new hazards in navigable airspace.Official FAA data shows low-altitude object strikes are one of the most deadly and recurring accident causes for helicopters. Such incidents account for 15 percent of fatal Part 91 helicopter accidents, 40 percent of Part 133 fatal crashes and 73 percent of fatal Part 137 accidents. Industry leaders stress low-altitude object collision remains a persistent lethal threat to helicopter operations. The coalition hopes to draw lessons from the Arizona crash, cooperate with regulators and the industry, and take proactive safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in advance.新闻3:https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/business-aviation/2026-04-22/bizjet-maintenance-market-forecast-hit-104b-2032Bizjet Maintenance Market Forecast To Hit $10.4B by 2032May 4, 2026Driven by aging fleets and technological advances, the global business jet maintenance market is on a steady upward track. Allied Market Research forecasts the market will reach 10.4 billion US dollars by 2032, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.5 percent, up from 6.7 billion dollars in 2022.Fleet expansion, routine maintenance needs for aging aircraft, and upgrades in avionics and composite systems are the key growth drivers. North America takes the largest market share, supported by its massive business jet fleet, sound regulatory rules and mature certified maintenance networks. The Asia Pacific region grows the fastest at an annual rate of 4.9 percent, fueled by booming business aviation in China, India and Southeast Asia. Rising high-net-worth populations and aviation infrastructure investment keep expanding the fleet and boosting long-term maintenance demand.Heavy jets lead maintenance spending due to complex systems, long flight hours and high overhaul costs, with strong demand for engine, avionics and cabin system upkeep in ultra-long-range operations. Base maintenance including heavy checks and structural overhauls dominates the market, while line maintenance grows with higher aircraft utilization.Engine maintenance tops all segments in revenue. Cabin maintenance spending keeps rising as operators upgrade interiors, connectivity facilities and seats to improve passenger experience and aircraft residual value.Technology innovations such as avionics upgrades, software updates and data-driven predictive maintenance bring new opportunities. Composite airframe materials also create extra repair and service demands. Europe maintains a solid market share, while Latin America, the Middle East and Africa emerge as promising growth markets. Major players include Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Dassault Aviation, Embraer and Gulfstream, offering customized service programs to help operators manage maintenance budgets.新闻4:https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/business-aviation/2026-05-04/flight-time-limitations-pose-new-cost-threat-charterFlight Time Limitations Pose New Cost Threat for Charter OperatorsMay 4, 2026Europe’s charter operators are confronted with revised pilot flight time limitations issued by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. Apart from taxes, airport access fees and decarbonization expenses, the new rules taking effect in 2027 will bring an extra cost burden to the industry.Industry insiders say the updated regulations impose stricter requirements on rest periods during and after flights, placing heavy pressure on charter companies. They call on the aviation sector to respond to strong lobbying from commercial pilot unions.Tailored for business aviation, the new rules will force operators of ultra-long-range jets such as the Dassault Falcon 10X to hire more pilots and arrange longer mandatory rest intervals between missions. Under the new standards, a 2-day trip from Europe to New York requires 3 days of subsequent rest, while a flight to Los Angeles needs 5 days off duty. The rules are regarded as unreasonable and confusing. They even set extra rest requirements based on whether schedule changes are notified by email or instant messaging apps. The business aviation community has long appealed for flight time rules suited to its own operational model, rather than copying those of scheduled airlines.Modern long-range jets offer much better comfort for pilots, and new technology has greatly cut workload, yet the new regulations fail to take these factors into account. It is predicted that long-haul missions of around 15 hours may need 3 or even 4 crew members, which will substantially raise overall charter operation costs. The audio and content of this podcast shall not be used for AI model training or any other purposes. Titan Aviation Fuels: Europe Facing Fuel ShortagesBy CURT EPSTEIN • Business Aviation Services EditorApril 22, 2026With the world’s petroleum markets still roiled by the Iran war, Titan Aviation Fuels is noting growing jet-A supply challenges across Europe. A large percentage of the region’s jet fuel is imported as a refined product from the Middle East, transported by tanker via maritime routes that are now unstable.Speaking this week at Aero Friedrichshafen, Titan international fuel division CEO Daniel Coetzer described a period of “significant market strain.” He added, “Right now, the biggest concern across the industry is simple: availability. Suppliers are under real pressure to deliver on contracts that, in some cases, are no longer feasible given current market conditions.”He noted that shortages are already being experienced in some areas, and with the European summer peak approaching, the situation could become “significantly more challenging.”Despite these disruptions, Titan has maintained consistent deliveries to its customers and is leveraging new technologies such as AI to optimize its international supply network and identify disruptions before they affect customers. For the company, that also means a continued effort to introduce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) into the market, in response to the ReFuelEU Aviation regulations and accompanying SAF mandates.“After a difficult start, we’re now seeing better alignment across the industry,” Coetzer explained. “There is broader acceptance of the 2% SAF mandate, even at airports where SAF is not physically available in the fuel supply.”While administrative complexity—particularly with regard to compliance— remains an issue, Coetzer expects more progress as reporting processes become more standardized. To that end, Titan has developed an internal application process to manage SAF credit certificates, with the goal of simplifying compliance and improving transparency.“This is a defining moment for aviation fuel supply in Europe,” Coetzer added. “There are real challenges ahead, but also an opportunity to build a more resilient and sustainable system.”Titan Aviation Fuels: Europe Facing Fuel Shortages | Aviation International News2. Vertical Achieves Full Piloted eVTOL Aircraft TransitionBy CHARLOTTE BAILEY • WriterApril 17, 2026Vertical Aerospace this week performed its first full transition flight, with its prototype eVTOL combining vertical take-off and landing elements with forward flight in a single mission. This precedes the next stage of certification testing and an upcoming critical design review.During the so-called ‘two-way’ transition flight, achieved on April 14, the test aircraft took off vertically before moving to forward wingborne cruise. It then landed vertically. This, believes the Bristol-based developer, makes it the “second company globally to complete a two-way piloted transition flight in a full-scale tiltrotor eVTOL.” In April 2025, California-based Joby became the first eVTOL to complete a full transition with a pilot on board. However, Vertical CEO Stuart Simpson believes the UK developer’s test flight – performed under the supervision of the UK Civil Aviation Authority - was achieved “under more rigorous regulatory oversight than anyone else in the category.” Additionally, no other European developer has yet achieved full piloted transition. The achievement builds on Vertical’s April 6 flight testing milestone, where the UK-based company announced it had taken off vertically and moved into fully wingborne flight. It then landed conventionally on Kemble’s runway. At the time, Vertical Aerospace chief engineer David King described the flight as “a pivotal technical proof point on our path to two-way transition.”The most recent test marks the culmination of a structured flight campaign that has seen the prototype fleet move progressively through tethered hover, thrustborne flight, wingborne flight and a final full transition. Vertical explained it is now moving onto the next stage of certification testing, with a critical design review to finalise the aircraft’s design before seven pre-production units are assembled in the UK. Certification is expected in 2028.Vertical eVTOL Prototype Achieves Full Two-way Piloted Transition Flight | Aviation International News3.Bizjet Incursion Triggers Air France Rejected TakeoffBy AMY WILDER • WriterApril 15, 2026The FAA is investigating a runway incursion at Los Angeles International Airport (KLAX) after air traffic controllers canceled takeoff clearance for an Air France flight when a business jet entered the runway without authorization. The April 8 incident involving Air France Flight 25 occurred around 6:15 p.m. local time as the Boeing 777-328ER accelerated for departure to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (LFPG), according to NBC Los Angeles. A Gulfstream G650ER that had just landed crossed Runway 24L, placing the business jet directly in the path of the departing Air France aircraft.Air traffic controllers had instructed the Gulfstream pilot to hold short of Runway 24L after landing, and the pilot acknowledged the instruction, according to ATC recordings. However, the business jet proceeded to cross the line.Runway warning lights alerted the Air France crew to the incursion, and the pilots immediately rejected the takeoff, according to NBC4. Controllers canceled the takeoff clearance after the Gulfstream crossed onto the runway. The Air France crew brought the aircraft to a safe stop, held position for approximately 10 minutes, then departed successfully with a slight delay. No injuries were reported.Hours after this incident, a Frontier Airlines Airbus A321 was forced to abort its takeoff at KLAX when service vehicles entered the runway area. No injuries were reported, and the FAA is also investigating that incident. The back-to-back incidents at one of the nation’s busiest airports come amid heightened scrutiny of runway safety following a fatal collision at New York’s LaGuardia Airport on March 22. An Air Canada Express CRJ-900 struck an aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle during landing, killing both pilots and injuring dozens of passengers and firefighters.According to FAA data, U.S. runway incursions have hovered around 1,700 annually for the past six years. While most incidents fall under Category C or D—where there is ample time to avoid collision or no immediate safety impact—a growing number of Category A and B events, where collision was narrowly avoided or risked, have captured national attention. The FAA has deployed tools, including the Surface Awareness Initiative, which offers real-time situational awareness to controllers at busy airports. Manufacturers such as Garmin, Honeywell, and Collins Aerospace have also introduced enhanced cockpit-based surface alert systems that issue real-time warnings to pilots of potential conflicts during taxi and takeoff operations.Air France Boeing 777 Aborts Takeoff after Gulfstream Crosses LAX Runway | Aviation International News4.Airbus Firefighting System Networks Variety of VehiclesBy MATT THURBER • Editor-in-ChiefApril 14, 2026Airbus is taking on the challenging problem of forest firefighting with a combination of interconnected aerial and ground assets, in an effort to improve water drop accuracy and reduce the time between detection and extinguishment of the fire. This effort is “in line with Airbus’ commitment to decarbonization and tackling the growing global challenge posed by forest fires,” according to the company. At the Garrigues military camp in Nîmes, France, Airbus and its partners tested scenarios that were developed with Service Départemental d'Incendie et de Secours (SDIS) and Entente Valabre. The latter is a public body, which the French Ministry of the Interior has tasked to provide training and assess forest firefighting equipment. The trial included Airbus’ H130 FlightLab helicopter, an ATR 72 test airplane, a Cirrus SR20, four drones, and three SDIS trucks for collecting and processing data. Two of the drones and the SR20 captured images and infrared footage of the fire area and sent it to Airbus servers connected to a truck-based command center. All of these assets were connected via Airbus’ Agnet mission-critical communication system, which was in turn connected to a local private mobile network bubble deployed by Airbus. After analyzing the images, then geolocating them and merging them with other captured data, an AI-based processing system examined the terrain, wind strength and direction measured by a drone, and the location of firefighters on the ground. It then “produced a comprehensive view of the tactical situation on the ground and in the air, and enabled flight paths and water drop points to be transmitted to the helicopter equipped with a precision water drop assistance system and to the ATR 72, which was simulating a water bomber,” according to Airbus.“This initial trial marks a significant milestone in Airbus’ efforts to develop a test environment and a comprehensive ecosystem for combating forest fires.”Airbus Firefighting System Networks Aircraft, Drones, and Vehicles | Aviation International News5. Middle East Tensions Drive Jet Fuel Costs Higher; Xiamen Airlines Raises Domestic Fuel SurchargesSource: Xiamen AirlinesApril 1, 2026Amid sustained geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, global jet fuel supply chains remain under pressure, with spot jet fuel prices rising markedly. Fuel costs typically account for 30% to 40% of total airline operating costs. The pass-through of such cost pressures to the passenger market via the fuel surcharge mechanism is standard industry practice.Against this market backdrop, Xiamen Airlines Co., Ltd. issued a notice on April 1, announcing a comprehensive adjustment to fuel surcharge standards for domestic route passenger transport, effective from 00:00 on April 5, 2026, based on ticket issuance time. For routes of 800 kilometers (inclusive) and below, the fuel surcharge is raised from RMB 10 to RMB 60 per passenger, an increase of RMB 50, representing a 500% rise. For routes above 800 kilometers, the surcharge is raised from RMB 20 to RMB 120 per passenger, an increase of RMB 100, also representing a 500% rise.Special passenger categories, including children, disabled servicemen, and disabled people's police, are subject to a 50% reduction, with fractional amounts below RMB 10 truncated. Specifically, for routes of 800 kilometers (inclusive) and below, the surcharge is RMB 30 per passenger; for routes above 800 kilometers, RMB 60 per passenger. Infants ticketed at 10% of the applicable adult full fare remain exempt from fuel surcharges.International ticket fuel surcharges are calculated based on system-generated results, with no unified adjustment applied.Notably, fuel surcharges are determined by the original ticket issuance date; no refund or additional collection applies upon ticket reissue.https://www.xiamenair.com/brandnew_CN/about/business-notice/notice2026040197846.htmlThe audio and content of this podcast shall not be used for AI model training or any other purposes. Now, let’s explore what’s making news in aviation today.1.https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/futureflight/2026-03-31/faa-evtol-integration-pilot-program-flips-scriptFAA eVTOL Integration Pilot Program Flips the Script on CertificationApril 3,2026The FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, or eIPP, is set to reshape how advanced air mobility enters service in the United States. Under this White House-backed initiative, electric, hybrid-electric, and autonomous aircraft will begin flying commercial cargo and medical missions this year—before type certification is complete and before final regulations are in place. At the core of the program is the FAA’s use of an Other Transaction Authority, or OTA, framework, which allows selected participants to conduct commercial operations under experimental approvals. This marks a major departure from the traditional sequence where certification must come before commercialization. Instead, the eIPP enables early operations to generate real-world data that will help shape future regulations.Eight projects, selected from more than 30 proposals, span 26 states and involve a wide range of use cases, from offshore logistics and organ delivery to firefighting. For companies like Wisk Aero, a Boeing subsidiary developing a fully autonomous eVTOL aircraft, the program represents a significant acceleration of its path to market.Wisk is participating in a Texas-led project alongside Archer Aviation, Joby Aviation, and Beta Technologies, as well as operators including Metro Aviation and Amazon. While Wisk ultimately aims to certify its pilotless Gen 6 aircraft by the end of the decade, it plans to begin with piloted aircraft on eVTOL routes to collect operational and certification data for its autonomy systems.According to CEO Sebastien Vigneron, the goal is not just to test aircraft, but to validate the entire digital and physical ecosystem. The data gathered through eIPP will directly inform FAA policy, helping ensure that when full commercial eVTOL services launch, both the aircraft and the regulatory environment are ready.2.https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/futureflight/2026-04-06/japan-targets-2027-launch-commercial-evtol-flightsJapan Targets 2027 Launch for Commercial eVTOL FlightsApril 6, 2026Japan is taking a more measured approach to advanced air mobility, pushing its timeline for commercial eVTOL passenger operations to 2027 or 2028. While the 2025 World Expo in Osaka was initially positioned as a launch point, the flights conducted there were limited to demonstrations, highlighting how much work remains before passenger service can begin.Under the revised national roadmap, Japan plans to introduce commercial eVTOL operations in select regions later this decade, followed by autonomous passenger transport and more advanced traffic management systems in the early 2030s, and full integration into urban transport networks in the 2040s.At the regional level, Osaka is moving ahead with more concrete deployment plans. The Kansai Economic Federation aims to support around 100 aircraft operating within an 80-kilometer radius of Osaka Bay by 2035. Central to this vision is the Osakako Vertiport, which is expected to evolve from a demonstration site into a hub anchoring the planned “Diamond Routes” network across the Kansai region.Among the companies involved, SkyDrive is positioning itself at the forefront of early operations. Its three-seat SD-05 aircraft completed demonstration flights at the Expo and is now moving from an experimental phase to an implementation phase. The company aims to begin operations around Osaka and in Kyushu by 2028, and recently secured approval of its general certification plan from Japan’s aviation regulator. However, the Expo demonstrations also revealed key challenges. None of the participating aircraft were certified for passenger operations. Some programs faced technical setbacks, while others had not progressed far enough in flight testing. Even SkyDrive’s flights were conducted remotely, with no onboard pilot.3.https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/futureflight/2026-04-09/french-funding-advance-ascendances-dual-use-batteryFrench Funding Backs Ascendance’s Hybrid Propulsion SystemApril 10,2026Ascendance has secured €12.2 million ($14.25 million) to develop its proprietary hybrid-electric propulsion system, applicable to drones and its in-development Atea eVTOL aircraft. This four-year funding commitment—made available through the France 2030 investment program and announced on April 9— will enable Ascendance to scale its industrial efforts, explained the company.According to the French start-up, the new government backing will help it to achieve a key milestone in it work to start series production of its Sterna Hybrid Pack propulsion system, including its battery technology. The company said that it also plans to progress plans for aircraft production by establishing a dedicated manufacturing facility for assembly civil and defense models, including the Atea, "in the medium term."In March, Ascendance’s full-scale Atea demonstrator aircraft entered its final assembly phase at the company’s facility in Toulouse. With the airframe’s structure now complete, the integration of propulsion elements, flight control system, and avionics are set to be completed by the end of the year.Ascendance also aims to pursue separate applications for its modular Sterna hybrid-electric modular propulsion system to power fixed wing aircraft and drones. In February 2025, Ascendance announced it was partnering with French drone manufacture Delair to integrate Sterna within the former’s DT46 long-range, fixed-wing drone. “At a moment when the limits of all-electric and uncertainties around hydrogen challenge the sector, hybrid-electric is establishing itself as an immediately deployable solution to reduce emissions while guaranteeing performance and autonomy,” concluded Ascendance. Initial Sterna series production will begin at its existing facilities at Muret L'Herm, in southern France.4.https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/futureflight/2026-04-06/vaeridion-fundraising-build-flying-microliner-hardwareVaeridion Fundraising to Build Microliner PrototypeApril 9, 2026Vaeridion is pushing ahead with its all-electric Microliner regional aircraft, targeting a first flight around 2027 as it shifts from concept development toward industrialization. A key step in that transition is the opening of a new battery manufacturing facility at Oberpfaffenhofen Airport in Germany, acquired from the insolvent eVTOL developer Lilium.According to CEO Ivor van Dartel, the facility is a critical enabler for building and testing hardware leading up to the company’s first aircraft. Unlike many early-stage programs, Vaeridion plans to produce a conforming prototype rather than a technology demonstrator, signaling a direct path toward certification. The nine-seat Microliner features a single-propeller, multi-engine electric architecture, combining a proprietary electrical system with lithium-ion batteries supplied by Molicel. The aircraft is designed for a range of up to 400 kilometers, with battery packs expected to last several thousand cycles before replacement.A major upcoming milestone will be in-flight battery testing, potentially using the Dornier 328-based UpLift flying testbed. Ground validation will also be supported by a “copper bird” test rig, allowing engineers to simulate system failures and validate safety scenarios.Vaeridion is targeting EASA Part 23 certification by the end of the decade, with launch operator ASL Group expected to begin commercial operations shortly after. While acknowledging a more cautious investment environment, van Dartel emphasized that strong programs continue to attract funding.By combining existing battery technology with optimized aircraft design, the company believes it can deliver a viable and scalable electric regional aircraft—and aims to be among the first to bring such a platform to market. The audio and content of this podcast shall not be used for AI model training or any other purposes.
