  Blaž Zabel, the principal investigator on the research programme The History of Humanities in Slovenia, hosts three participants from History of Philology: Past and Future, a workshop held at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, on 7 May 2026: Kris Palmieri (LMU Munich), Laura Loporcaro (Ghent University) and Aaron Turner (Royal Holloway, University of London / Knapp Foundation). They ask what philology is, treating it as discipline, method and scholarly ethos, and resist reducing it to classics or to German nation-building — the Slovenian, German and British cases each need their own context. The talk turns to whether shared methods can bridge traditions, to over-specialisation across subfields, and to philology's present value: close, critical reading as a skill that AI cannot supply.

Dušan Rebolj, a Junior Researcher with the Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Arts, interviews Jan Ciglenečki, an Assistant Professor of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy, and a co-founder of the Faculty of Arts' Centre for Middle Eastern Studies. The topic is the history of Egyptology in Slovenia: its origins in the archaeological work of the Austrian-Slovene consuls of the Habsburg monarchy, its gradual development during the Yugoslav and post-independence periods, and its current state. It is a story of amateur beginnings, slow institutionalisation, and exciting future prospects.
