emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with DJ Shadow, originally episode 298 from 2019-11-13.Original episode intro:"Guess who’s coming… IT’S… Guess who’s coming… IT’S j-j-j-just your favourite DJ saviour / using and confusing beats that you never heard / since / 1990… Ladies and gentlemen, he’ll put a smile on your face like Ultra Brite - it’s DJ SHADOW!"(* now that is a solid intro).Original writeup below:“…Not every musical moment affects people the same way…”A great rare treat for Shadow heads and crate digging nerds, and those who appreciate a good old fashioned music chat right here, but not only that - of course Pip and Shadow get to some really interesting ground when not dealing with the musical matters at hand, including his growing up in a remote town with limited access to hip hop which leads nicely onto how he eventually did find his way in, which then leads us into the whole Mo Wax side of things where he met and worked with James Lavelle extensively for a contained period (the foundation for which being laid by discovering NME, Melody Maker and also by the very intro of Nation Of Millions by Public Enemy - “LONDON, ENGLAND…!!!”), the Entroducing / Soldesides / Unkle / Brainfreeze eras, dealing with fan expectations and of course being taken out of context in hilarious style, nutritional value of rap from then and now, the current album ‘Our Pathetic Age’ and a breakdown of lead track ‘Rosie’, conjuring live sets and so much more which is all there for you to discover! • AJA MONET • the surrealist blues poet defines the colour of rain ('The Color Of Rain' • 22 May on Drink Sum Wtr) #673 27.05.2026 56min
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the incredible musician and poet AJA MONET!To use a couple of words to sum up the essence of someone is a strange thing indeed, and this subject comes up in this chat too. The idea of indentity versus what one strives for. This is most definitely an episode for the appreciators of the craft of poetry, but not ONLY that - it's more like a demonstration of why everything else around it matters so much, and how poetry is achieved by plugging into community, society, and life its very self. It's fascinating hearing about Aja's New York upbringing, and how exposure to the urban envrionment and the people within it helped cultivate the person she would grow into - Aja really does live and embody the life of a creator, and the self-proclaimed status of 'surrealist blues poet' is perfect indeed. You'll definitely get a huge amount from the chat if you yourself are involved in words, but if you're in the least bit creative and find that side of your life as crucial as air and water, you'll get so much from the chat. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the fabulous acting talent that is AMAR CHADHA-PATEL!Bar after bar on this one, folks. You'll really enjoy it and that goes for everyone including those not necessarily focused on the world of the moving picture. Amar's been steadily building steam on his career path and as you'll hear here, is gradually owning the fact that he's really incredibly good at what he does. Which is NOT the opposite of humility. It's a sign of acknowledging growth, skill and accomplishment, and is refreshing to hear. But on top of that, there's so much in this chat including behind the scenes nuggets, how he approaches a one man theatre show, advice, mistakes, history, the Persian Empire (can have ONE WEEK where that doesn't come up??), and so much more. It's a lovely one which is hugely entertaining and informative, and packs in a lot in the run time. Pip is a confirmed fan of course, and caught up with them on a very swift whirlwind run in London to talk all things film, from the time taken to get to this stage with the film, seeing the effect of it on an audience (especially comedically), the casting of Adam Sandler, the importance of voices, the use of extras in a far more involved sense, British acting and the realism of it, casting real people, working with musicians, using New York as a character, their intense focus on character even down to auditioning actors for one line appearances, and the sonic world of a film including the ‘Atmos’ mix which they go into. Amazing - proper film nerd’s one here and you’re not one, you might well be by the end. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the awesome director and writer TOM GEORGE!A true nerd-out for the film heads right here, as Tom and Pip get it cracking from the beginning and do not let up. Tom's been ultra busy in recent times and all of this busy-ness is discussed, and it's really fascinating of course... Mixed in with the updates are some gems and jewels about the process and backstage bits and pieces that are truly worthy of note for those who enjoy the work on screen and appreciate the hows and whos of it arriving there. As you will expect there's some great 'Bait' chat involving Riz and Guz, a shared love of the one-shot and extended takes, how Tom found out about the See How They Run Bafta nom (cheers Pip!), allowing the script to do heavy lifting, and just an overall celebration of creativity, essentially. Today, we catch up with Stephen Fry, originally episode 440 from 2022-05-02.Original writeup below:Simply using the term ‘national treasure’ doesn’t do any kind of justice whatsoever to who or what Stephen is, does and has done, of course. But it’s pretty tough to dispute. Long term (and casual) Pip listeners will already know the line ‘Thou shalt not question Stephen Fry’ - well, Pip breaks the holy rap commandment and does just that, and it’s a joy to behold. Naturally there’s only so many tips of icebergs one can introduce in an hour, but rest assured that you get the full Pip and Fry experience including pandemic times, social media, Greeks and Romans and history as a whole, tattoos, religion, politics - it’s like if you had a dinner party with him but condensed into a lunch break. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the absolute superstar of screens of all sizes IZUKA HOYLE!A super delightful pick-me-up of an episode, featuring a true action star but someone who is infinitely capable of delivering whatever the role requires. Izuka and Pip share many mutual friends and this is where the chat excels, as through the miracle of telephone technology (okay let's walk that back a bit - two voice messages), we get to travel down a new portal in the conversation which is a lovely little distraction. Elsewhere though, of course we get to hear about all things stunt and action through 'Prisoner' and what that brought to the table, being handcuffed to a scene partner (and the important of chemistry in such a scenario), working on Jack Rooke's 'Big Boys', and how the whole acting world was approached and landed upon. Today, we catch up with Rutger Bregman, originally episode 190 from 2018-02-21.Original writeup below:An absolutely massive episode covering - as said - some big topics and issues, which are immensely interesting and made a lot easier to understand with Rutger’s able guidance and explanation. His book ‘Utopia For Realists And How We Can Get There’ is available now (published by Bloomsbury), and this should be a good idea of what you can expect - Rutger tackles the issues of universal basic income, strikes, borders, how great art can be achieved by not having basic financial worries, how we need a return to utopian thinking, new ideas beginning at the fringes of society, how the US isn’t the beating heart of the entire world (as the news may have you believe), the ‘circle of bullshit’, and how we are working with “21st Century hardware on 19th Century software” - all of these are expounded on a great deal so this is a good one to really sit and take some time with. There is a kind of ‘Freakanomics’ approach to some of the points, which is fascinating - like the eventual financial cost of one element of one’s life, and the knock-on effects of doing one thing in particular and how it leads to what’s down the road. Just so much to enjoy, and all very positive too - certainly not a world of doom and gloom in this one, no way. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by acting great ADEEL AKHTAR!There's no doubt that this is a very special episode, as you have rightfully come to expect from Distraction Pieces. But there's a feeling of almost meditation on this one, a sense of two people building a very detailed structure of conversation and being in total flow state with it, while all the time the door is open for everyone listening (as opposed to two people having a locked-off personal catch up, you know?). Adeel has clearly done a lot of thinking and indeed meditating on this craft of acting, and so much of it is present here as he and Pip get into all aspects of the game, including the process itself and the myriad facets within, the art and mechanics of theatre acting versus screen acting and the subtle alterations that are necessary, and the idea of requiring permission to pivot or try something new when you might already be exactly where you need to be. As Adell quotes, "dig where you stand". What's also perfect is that he joined Pip for this chat while he was on break from rehearsing for 'Mass', which is also talked about in here. Pure craft on display. Oh and also please check the Music Boutique link below - more details in the ep. I for one am sick of reading tweets about how good it is from US people. So it’s great news that us UK folk get a piece… This is a perfect if slightly condensed connection with Pip and Boots, as they get into his desire to be Prince early on, theatre, film school, wanting to sound like Ice Cube, the mainstream-ness of documentaries, having faith in a great cast, his diverse cinematic influences, importance of wardrobe and “beautiful clutter”. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the necessary ray of light that is GEMMA CAIRNEY!A return mission from Gemma, as the last meeting was a good 9 years ago... Also "necessary ray of light", while a lovely sounding complement, doesn't actually inform you of what Gemma's up to at the moment or has been up to over those interveining 9 years, which is a huge amount! From the early years on radio right up to recent times, with a prolific range of projects and quests along the way, Gemma hasn't lost any sparkle or positivity, which is a rare thing in a world such as this. But as you can imagine, it does take energy an a psychic toll, and we hear about it in this awesome, inspiring episode. While there is a wealth of tangents born from her upcoming book release 'The Immortal Sisterhood', she and Pip cover a lot of ground including art and creativity and the class cross-section, patriarchy at large, motherhood (times two!), location, hwo and why love is just straight up better than hate, and altogether much too much to summarise in these notes. So just jump in and enjoy, and you're sure to come away from this one with a smile and feeling just a little bit taller. Or maybe floating a bit. Today, we catch up with Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim, originally episode 268 from 2019-05-15.Original writeup below:“Fatboy Slim? Just a band…”It’s so great when these music based episodes come around, especially when Pip has had previous dealings with the guest in question which is exactly the case with Norman. In fact you will hear the evidence of which at the very end of the podcast so keep that in the treat bank for now eh! A truly great chat with the two down on the coast in Norman’s Brighton home, where they catch up on all sorts covering the past, the present and the future of his career. As you’ll hear, it’s really quite a monumental career at that - indeed, he goes decades deeper than a few hit singles. From an early start with his band The Housemartins, he’s had more pseudonyms than Kool Keith and played to more people than - well, you name em… The very definition of a superstar DJ, let’s say! From some podcast chatter up top, to some light Millwall vs Brighton banter, to his early days in Reigate being a punk up against a sea of teddyboys, the homogeneity of culture these days, the relationship dynamics of being in a band, how he’s always been into indie and dance music when the two were not as mixed up as the present day, that insane Brighton beach show, collaborating with previous DPP guest Ryca, being very much in the public eye via his marriage to Zoe Ball and SO much brilliant music talk throughout. • ONE DRINK w/ Kae, Polar & Musa • a flashback to 2011 in 3 movements #665 01.04.2026 1t 11min
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week we have a rare throwback recording to 2011 (pre-Distraction Pieces Podcast) with Pip, Kae Tempest, Musa Okwonga and Polarbear! The Mount Rushmore of spoken word right here folks, captured in a recording Pip uncovered while late-night trawling through the vaults by candlelight. This was originally recorded on camera but there was also a mic in the middle of the room - though as you will hear, it's a bit of a recording sandwich with the slightly more decent recording forming the bread and the slightly more raw camera audio forming the filling. Follow? Nice. It's a really cool chat, incredibly freeform and without defined topics and certainly not recorded with the shape and craft you might expect of late-era Distraction Pieces. But think of it as the 'Distraction Pieces Basement Tapes' - a lively chat of varying audio quality which functions nicely as a time capsule. It's also uncanny hearing about predictions for the following decade - eerie how much has been manifested since... The audio has been cleaned up a touch but sometimes with this kind of sound, things can get worse the more you try and scoop out of it, so just allow your ears to get familiar with it and you'll be grand. emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Will & Phoebe of FULL FACT.ORG, originally episode 13 from 2015-01-07.As Pip mentions on the intro, it is quite a weird episode. This is of course not down the awesome guests representing FullFact, but more down to how drastically the media and basic human landscape has changed since the episode was broadcast 11 years ago. We've seen how much can change in a week - so with our perspective over a decade later, it's like stepping back into a very bizarre alternative timeline. What's weird is that the phrase "fake news" was a mere glint in some shady folks eyes, and also that this chat happened 5 years before a pandemic, which was where misinformation truly had its time in the sun. Let alone artificial intelligence. This is some novel-worthy stuff right here. Anyway - without getting too caught up in all of the chaos, FullFact is a VERY important organisation who specialise in neutralising dis/mis-information and set out to fully fact check what gets out there, so listen knowing that you can and should check in on their site regularly. • ANSON BOON • 'The Good Boy' in cinemas now! (MobLand / Pistol / 1917) #664 25.03.2026 1t 4min
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the force of acting posititivity (and good boy) that is ANSON BOON!As stated in the episode title, 'The Good Boy' (aka 'Heel' in the US) is out and about now, in which Anson plays alongside the powerful duo of Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough. Anson is capable of playing characters who aren't necessarily immediately charming, let's say, and some that might require a little work to warm to, but always make for some truly captivating and interesting, memorable performances which inspire conversation, debate and thought. So it goes without saying that this chat is an awesome one as Pip finds out where these choices originate, and traces the source of Anson's acting path. Of course there are so many facets and angles covered too, including basically becoming a fully functioning Sex Pistols tribute band by way of 'Pistol' (in which he was coached by Underworld!), his love of a film set, being a nepo gangster, the School of Kate Winslett, acting alongside Tom Hardy, Helen Mirren, Paddy Considine, Pierce Brosnan and so many more, and just a huge amount of fascinating goodies from his time in front of and nearby the camera.
