378 Who Should NOT Buy Your Farm Product? (A Worthy Thought Exercise) 16.09.2026 57minWe spend a lot of time defining our ideal customer, but here's a question we don't ask nearly enough: Who should NOT buy your product? If you're spending too much time answering questions, overcoming objections, or trying to convince people to buy (only to have them walk away!) you may not have a sales problem. You may have a qualification problem. In this episode, I'm sharing a recent encounter that made me realize how valuable it is to recognize our "no signals" -- the clues that someone simply isn't a good fit for what we're selling. And even better: What if our marketing could communicate those signals for us, so people self-qualify before they ever reach the sale? We'll look at practical ways to build these filters into your website, social media, emails, FAQs, pricing, and other marketing assets, so more of the right people make it to the bottom of your funnel. I'll also challenge you to finish this sentence: "My farm/product is probably NOT a good fit for someone who…" Because clear marketing doesn't just attract. It also repels. Farm Marketing School (FMS) member Bonus: We're workshopping this topic together during our monthly Zoom call this month! We'll identify your "no signals" and brainstorm ways to build them into your marketing. Can't come live? I'll save the replay in the FMS library. 377 Practical Ways to Get More Referrals From Your Farm Customers 09.09.2026 54minMost farmers will tell you that word-of-mouth is one of their best sources of new customers. But there's a big difference between being grateful for referrals, and intentionally creating more of them. In this episode, we're talking about how to put an engine behind word-of-mouth. I'll share a whole bunch of practical ways farms can make referrals easier, more natural, and more likely to happen—without needing complicated software or some fancy loyalty program. More importantly, I'll show you how to think strategically about who you ask, when you ask, what you give customers to share, and what happens when a referral actually converts. By the end of this episode, you'll be able to look at your own customer journey, spot the places where referral opportunities are hiding, and design a simple referral experiment you can actually test on your farm. If you've already got customers who love what you do, this episode will help you turn some of that goodwill into growth. 376 What Should I Call This? How to Name Farm Products (So That They Sell) 02.09.2026 47minCould changing one word on a sign or product listing make a product sell better? Last week at our Farmer's Bag Toledo pickup, I noticed something strange happening with two kinds of onions sitting right next to each other. Customers kept choosing one—and passing over the other. Then one of our volunteers made an observation: "I wonder if it's the name." That comment made me think, "Oh I've got to do a podcast about this!" Because as farmers, we often name our products based on what we call them -- i.e. the variety in the seed catalog, the technical name of the cut, or whatever makes sense to us behind the scenes. But your product name isn't just an inventory label. It's marketing copy. In this episode, I'm sharing seven simple tests you can use when naming (or renaming) your farm products—from everyday items in your online store to bigger signature offers and programs. We'll talk about how the right name can help a customer understand what you're selling, recognize why they might want it, remember it, and sometimes even stop in their tracks and ask, "Wait... why do you call it THAT?" If you've ever struggled with what to call something, or you've got a product customers consistently seem to overlook, this episode will give you a new way to look at the words on the sign. Listen in and then choose ONE product on your farm to rename and test this week. Helpful Links & Resources What email provider do I use for my email marketing launches? 375 The Five Transformations Farmers Really Sell 19.08.2026 44minWhat if your customers aren't actually buying your vegetables? In this episode, Corinna shares a personal story from her son's Air Force Basic Training that reinforced a key marketing principle, and it has nothing to do with farming. If you've ever struggled to know what to say in your emails, on your website, or in your social media posts, this episode will help you uncover the deeper reason people choose to buy from your farm. Eventually all business owners realize that customers don't buy products... they buy the life those products help create. You'll learn how to identify the transformation your farm really delivers, why some customer motivations matter more than others, and how this one mindset shift can change every piece of your marketing. If you're ready to stop talking about vegetables and start connecting with what your customers truly want, this episode is for you. 374 Behind the Launch: How Farmer's Bag Toledo Went From Idea to Sold Out 12.08.2026 57minHow do you go from a random idea... to selling out a brand-new food access program in just a few days? In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain on the complete behind-the-scenes story of launching The Farmer's Bag Toledo. You'll hear how one unexpected meeting planted the seed, how the right partnership changed everything, why we chose to beta test instead of trying to make it perfect, and all the practical work that happened behind the scenes -- from pricing and logistics to technology, funding, naming, messaging, and launch strategy. If you've ever had an idea sitting in your notebook wondering... "Could this actually become something?" ...this episode will show you exactly how we walked one idea all the way into the marketplace. Inside this episode you'll discover: Why one unexpected opportunity made us believe Farmer's Bag Toledo needed to exist. How the right strategic partnership accelerated everything. Why thinking of it as a beta test removed so much pressure. The dozens of decisions every new offer requires before anyone can buy. How we built the offer itself—from pricing and bonuses to messaging and positioning. The technology stack we used to automate the customer experience. The launch sequence that created momentum before the doors even opened. What surprised me most after watching the entire launch unfold. The biggest lesson I'll carry into every future offer I build. Whether you're launching a CSA, opening a farm stand, starting a flower subscription, or creating something completely new, this episode is really about learning how successful offers are designed. Helpful Links & Resources See the sales page for the Farmer's Bag Toledo here. I mentioned it in this episode. Download the Farmer's Bag Toledo Promo Flier. I originally created this as something to pass out to potential customers to explain what it was in a nutshell. In the end, we didn't need to use it that way. Instead I gave it to my media outlets to help explain our pitch. I mention Zapier in this podcast. This is a tool that will connect apps to each other and create automations for you. 373: The 7 Essential Offers Every Farm Business Needs 05.08.2026 52minImagine asking the first runner in a relay race to carry the baton from the starting line all the way to the finish. No winning team would do that. Yet many farm businesses unknowingly expect one offer to do exactly that. In this episode, I introduce a simple framework that completely changed the way I think about marketing: The Offer Portfolio. Instead of relying on one offer to attract new customers, create first-time buyers, build loyalty, increase order value, and generate referrals, you'll discover the 7 essential offers every farm business should consider -- and the unique role each one plays. Just like a relay team, every offer has one job: run its leg of the race, then pass the baton to the next. In this episode, you'll discover: Why every offer should have one clear job. The 7 essential offers every farm business needs. How each offer pulls a different business growth lever. How to identify the missing "runner" that's holding your business back. By the end of this episode, you'll stop asking, "What should I sell next?" …and start asking, "Which runner is missing from my relay team?" 372 Dealing with Dread: The Hidden Marketing Obstacle That's Keeping Farmers Stuck 29.07.2026 1t 4minHave you ever found yourself putting off the very marketing task that could help your farm grow? Writing the email. Launching the promotion. Recording the video. Raising your prices. Building the sales page. You know it needs to get done... but every time you think about it, you feel that heavy sense of dread. In this episode, I share a personal discovery that is challenging the the way I think about procrastination, marketing, and business growth. After catching myself avoiding two important projects this month, I realized something surprising: I wasn't avoiding the work. I was avoiding the story I was telling myself about the work. In this episode, we'll explore why your brain creates dread in the first place, why we often mistake uncertainty for difficulty, and why many farmers wrongly conclude they're "bad at marketing" when they're really just avoiding uncomfortable marketing tasks. Most importantly, I'll show you how to reinterpret dread -- not as a stop sign, but as a possible indicator that you're standing at the edge of growth. If you've been procrastinating on marketing, struggling to take action, or feeling stuck in your farm business, this episode will give you a completely new way to think about what's really holding you back. 370 Finding the Friction That's Costing You Sales 15.07.2026 57minEvery farm has friction. The question is… can you see it? Friction is anything that makes buying from your farm harder than it needs to be. It shows up in every business—often in places we've become blind to because we know our own systems so well. The good news? You don't have to eliminate every point of friction to see results. Sometimes removing just one obstacle can make a meaningful difference. In this episode, I'll introduce you to the concept of becoming a Friction Detective. Together, we'll explore the most common places friction hides in a farm business, the questions you should be asking as you audit your customer experience, and how to identify one simple improvement you can make this week to help more customers move from interested... to buying. 369 The One Metric That Tells You if Your Farm Leads Are Actually Worth Anything 08.07.2026 1t 18minWhat is a lead actually worth to your farm business? Most farmers know how many email subscribers they have. Far fewer know what those subscribers are actually worth. And that can lead to some very bad marketing decisions. In this episode, I introduce a simple metric called Earnings Per Lead (EPL) that helps you measure the value of the people entering your world -- i.e. whether they came from a Facebook ad, a farmers market, a farm tour, a referral, or a lead magnet. You'll learn how to calculate EPL, why it's different from Cost Per Lead, and how it can help you decide which marketing activities deserve more of your time, money, and attention. In this episode, we'll discuss: What Earnings Per Lead (EPL) is and why it matters Why Cost Per Lead can be misleading How to calculate EPL using a simple formula How to track the value of different lead sources Why some leads are far more valuable than others Real-world examples from CSA farms, meat producers, flower farms, and online stores How EPL can help you make smarter marketing decisions If you've ever wondered whether your lead magnets, email list growth efforts, farm tours, or Facebook ads are actually producing customers, this episode will give you a new way to look at your marketing. 368: How to Prioritize Your Farm Marketing When Time Is Tight 01.07.2026 49minOne of the questions I hear all the time from farmers is: "What marketing channel should I focus on?" Or: "If I only have a few hours a week, what's the minimum marketing I need to do?" But I think that's the wrong question. The real question is: Where should I invest my limited marketing time so it creates the biggest impact? In this episode, I share a simple framework to help you decide where your marketing time should go based on the three metrics that actually drive farm revenue: customer count, average order value, and order frequency. We'll talk about the four places marketing time can go, why some marketing activities create far more leverage than others, and how to know whether your next hour should be spent communicating, planning, optimizing, or measuring. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by all the marketing advice out there (or wondered if you're spending your time on the right things), this episode will help you focus on what matters most. Lexi came to the call frustrated because their Simple Supper Box subscription had only attracted one customer after months of promotion. As we dug into the problem, we uncovered a lesson that applies to every farm business: Not every offer is the right first offer. Many farmers assume that if an offer isn't selling, the offer itself must be flawed. But sometimes the real issue is where that offer sits in the customer journey. A meat subscription might be a fantastic offer. A membership, bundle, or annual commitment might be a fantastic offer. But if you're asking brand-new customers to make a big commitment before they've built trust in your farm, even a great offer can struggle. In this coaching call, you'll hear us explore: How customers move from stranger to superfan Why some offers belong later in the customer journey The mistake farmers make when they lead with a high-commitment offer How to identify the products that should come before your premium offer Why sequencing matters just as much as pricing and positioning If you've ever launched something that didn't get the response you hoped for, this episode will challenge you to look beyond the offer itself and ask a different question: Is this the right offer... for this stage of the relationship? This Week's Homework Challenge: Make a list of every offer in your business. Then put them in order based on what a brand-new customer should buy first. What's the easiest, lowest-risk way to get started with you? What's the next step after that? And what comes after that? When you're done, look at your most profitable offer and ask yourself: Have I earned the right to present this offer yet? Because not every offer is a first offer. 366 What Farmers Can Learn from Aldi's "Shop First" Strategy 17.06.2026 42minI got this podcast episode idea in the middle of Aldi. Seriously. I was walking down the grocery aisle when a sign stopped me in my tracks. It said: "Shop Aldi First." And I remember thinking: "Dang. That's good." Buried inside that simple phrase was a powerful marketing lesson that applies to almost every direct-to-consumer farm business. Aldi isn't trying to convince customers to buy everything from them. They're trying to become the first stop. In this episode, I unpack the marketing strategy behind Aldi's campaign and show how farmers can apply the same thinking to become the first place customers think of when they need your __________________. 365 Build Your Farm's "Dream 25" List 10.06.2026 31minWhat if the fastest way to grow your farm business wasn't finding more customers… but finding the people who already HAVE your customers' attention? In this episode, I'm introducing the concept of the "Dream 25 List" -- a simplified version of the famous Dream 100 marketing strategy -- and showing farmers how to identify partnership opportunities hiding all around them. We're talking about: what's a Dream 25 list? why partnerships can accelerate trust faster than social media how to identify 25 businesses and influencers that already serve your ideal customer examples of creative partnerships for flower farms, CSA farms, meat producers, and wedding flower growers I also share real examples from Shared Legacy Farms, Anderson Farms, Weber Ranch, and a coaching call inside Farm Marketing School that sparked this conversation. 364 CSA Buy Down Offers: Marketing Case Study with Thirsty Fruit Farm 03.06.2026 1t 19minIn this episode, I sit down with Krista Barzen-Hansen of Thirsty Fruit Farm (one of my students from Farm Marketing School!) to break down how her farm marketing has evolved and strengthened over the past year. In this farm marketing case study, we unpack: how customers discover her farm, how she nurtures leads, how she's constantly optimizing her "gateway" product what content she creates, how she thinks about onboarding, the systems she's building, and how she's learning to approach marketing with confidence and experimentation instead of overwhelm. Krista's primary sales model happens to be a CSA "buy down" structure, so much of the conversation naturally flows through that lens. But the real lesson here is seeing how marketing principles come together inside an actual farm business. If you've ever wondered what it looks like to move from "random acts of marketing" into a more intentional marketing ecosystem… this episode will give you a practical example. Meet Our Podcast Guest: Krista Barzen-Hanson from ThirstyFruitFarm.com Krista is an environmental chemist turned farmer. She and her husband, Brad, started Thirsty Fruit Farm in upstate NY during the pandemic. They farm about 10 acres of certified organic fruit and vegetables and sell direct-to-consumer through their buy-down CSA farm share, online store, and farm stand. Krista oversees the vegetable operation and marketing. 363 Find Your Farm's Proof Sentence (That Helps Customers Say Yes Faster) 27.05.2026 41minWhat if one sentence could help your customers trust you faster? In this episode, I'm introducing a powerful marketing tool called a proof sentence — a simple line that helps your customer think, "Yeah… this is probably going to work for me, too." A proof sentence doesn't just describe your product. It shows what happens after someone buys it. We'll talk about why promises are so powerful in marketing, how to identify the transformation your farm product creates, and how to build your own proof sentence using a simple formula. Because your customers aren't just buying vegetables, meat, flowers, or CSA boxes. They're buying the transformation. In this episode, you'll learn: Why proof sentences help customers overcome hesitation The 4-part structure behind a strong proof sentence How to start identifying the real transformation your product creates Examples of proof sentences for CSA farms, flower farms, meat producers, and more How to use proof sentences in your emails, website, product descriptions, and social media Your homework: Take a first stab at drafting your own farm's proof sentence. Ask yourself: What can I honestly promise will happen to most of my customers after they buy from me? Get specific. Your customers are already experiencing a result. Now point to it. 362 How to Groom Your Farm Website During the Season 20.05.2026 52minIs your farm website reflecting what's happening on your farm RIGHT NOW… or is it stuck in last season? A few weeks ago, our farm was featured in the Toledo Blade newspaper during asparagus season, and suddenly we had a wave of new people discovering our business online. There was just one problem… Our website wasn't ready for them. The homepage wasn't talking about asparagus. There was no mention of the newspaper feature. And there wasn't a clear next step for new visitors trying to figure out how to buy from us. That experience sparked a huge realization for me: Farm websites are not static brochures. They're living storefronts. And just like a retail store changes its displays, promotions, featured products, and signage throughout the year, your website should evolve with the current season of your farm business too. In today's episode, I'm unpacking: Why stale websites quietly create friction and confusion How new customers experience your website differently than loyal customers The hidden role your homepage plays in guiding people deeper into your funnel The seasonal elements I think farms should regularly rotate and refresh A simple "website grooming rhythm" you can use throughout the year If you've been treating your website like a one-and-done project, this episode will completely change the way you think about your homepage. 361 The Missing Piece in Your Farm Business: The Success Path 13.05.2026 1t 21minMay 13, 2026 There's a missing piece in most farm marketing funnels, and it lives after the sale. If your customers feel overwhelmed, unsure what to do, or like they're "failing" with your product… they don't come back. In this episode, I'm breaking down the concept of a Success Path -- the intentional roadmap you build to guide your customer from confusion → confidence → transformation. When you build this well, you don't just create repeat buyers… you create loyal fans who trust you, stick with you, and tell others. What You'll Learn: What a Success Path actually is (and why it's the most overlooked part of your funnel) The key elements every success path needs: Why teaching matters (and the kinds of skills your customers need to succeed) How to think like a guide: building frameworks, processes, and "curriculum" for your customers The power of normalizing roadblocks—and how it keeps people from quitting Why community and belonging are retention superpowers Once you see the path, you can start building resources around it: Simple how-to videos (YouTube, social, website) PDFs, checklists, and quick-start guides Recipes, tutorials, and tool lists A "home base" (Google Doc, Google Sheet, or webpage) to organize everything Evergreen content you can reuse year after year Over time, this evolves into a repeatable system that moves customers from the point of first purchase through all the items in your product ladder (and creates super fans). This episode will show you how to get started with this key element in your sales process. It's SO GOOD! 360 What to Do with Your Farm's Greatest Hits 06.05.2026 45minI own every single album by the Indigo Girls. I'm a true fan. I know the deep cuts. The obscure songs. The ones most people have never heard of. But the album I reach for the most?...Their greatest hits. The one with all the favorites. The songs I already know I love. And it got me thinking… What if your farm had a "greatest hits album"? Most farmers are sitting on their most powerful sales tool… and not using it. Your best sellers—the products your customers already love—are doing more work than you think. But if you're not intentionally leveraging them? You're leaving money on the table. 359 Are You Tracking This Number in Your Farm Business? 29.04.2026 56minWhat if the growth you've been chasing… isn't actually about getting more customers? In this episode, I'm introducing a simple (but incredibly powerful) metric called Customer Value. And once you understand it, it will completely change how you think about your farm's revenue, your marketing, and your growth strategy. Most farmers are focused on the wrong lever. They're trying to bring in more people… when the real opportunity might already be sitting inside their current customer base. Inside this episode, I'm going to show you: What Customer Value actually is (and how to calculate it for your farm) Why this number brings clarity and predictability to your revenue How it helps you make smarter marketing decisions (including what you can afford to spend to get a new customer) And the mindset shift that moves you from chasing sales… to building a system We'll also walk through a real-life example of a farmers market vendor and show how small changes—like getting someone to come back one more time or spend a few dollars more per visit—can dramatically increase your revenue without adding a single new customer. This is one of those episodes that will quietly rewire how you think about growth. Thank You to Our Podcast Sponsors: Local Line is my farm's preferred e-commerce platform for farmers.
