The 365 Days of Astronomy podcast, launched in 2009 for the International Year of Astronomy, offers daily episodes featuring a new voice each day to explore the universe. Managed by Avivah Yamani and edited by Richard Drumm, the show is funded through Patreon and produced by the Planetary Science Institute. Today's 2 topics: - To get an idea of the energy involved in a rocket launch, the NASA Saturn V, moon rocket, fully fueled on the launch pad contained the chemical energy of 2,000 pounds of TNT. This old technology could carry us to Mars and back on missions that would last years. To cut the mission time, the (radiation) risks, and the mass of supplies required for such a prolonged space mission NASA is looking at alternative means of rocket propulsion. Back in the 1950s NASA's project Orion was a study to investigate propelling a rocket by a series of atomic bomb explosions behind the vehicle.    - Without additional data, the true nature of the rapidly northward moving point of light my Catalina Sky Survey teammate Carson Fuls (the new Director of CSS) had just discovered would have remained a mystery. Fortunately, this new object was tracked by telescopes in both Arizona and New Mexico. These data were used to calculate it's orbit around the Sun, estimate it's size, and give it the name 2017 UX5. When Carson first spotted this enormous 1,200 foot diameter space rock it was more than 30 million miles away traveling in our direction at 10.7 mi/s.   • EVSN - Betelgeuse: Smaller & Closer Than Previously Thought… What? 18.09.2026 16min
    From October 19, 2020. Hosted by: Dr. Pamela L. Gay (@CosmoQuest) Today's top story brings back our favorite red giant star, Betelgeuse. A new paper published in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ) with lead author Dr. Meridith Joyce looks at Betelgeuse as a pulsating variable star and uses atmospheric physics to bring us new insights on what the red giant is up to.   This paper combines new observations with new computer models to derive the star's mass and size from its outward behavior in much the same way that one might derive the size of a jug based on what notes can be created by blowing across its opening. Different sized objects naturally resonate in specific ways. By understanding how Betelgeuse pulsates in the fundamental mode and first overtone mode – those first two pitches you can make with your bottle – they were able to work backward to figure out Betelgeuse's physical size. This method let them then figure out more accurately the star's distance because we know how big it appears on the sky, and there is a simple mathematical relationship between how big something is and how big it appears.    Our current estimates had been based on Hipparcos measurements of how Betelgeuse appears to move relative to background objects when the Earth moves around the Sun. This technique, called parallax, can be super useful, but, trying to measure how much an object shifts, when that object is a blobby star like Betelgeuse, can be a challenge! Betelgeuse appears to be about 42 microarcseconds (mas) across and seems to shift just 5.95+0.58 or -0.85 mas. This is a really hard measurement, and Betelgeuse hasn't been looked at yet with Gaia.    By working from the theoretical size they got from its pulsation modes, and calculating a new distance, this team found that the lower edge of that error in the distance appears to be accurate, putting Betelgeuse just 530 lightyears away. This is 25% of the distance from the prior estimate, but as I said, it's within error. This closer distance makes Betelgeuse a bit smaller; it appears to be 750 times the radius of the Sun. Nevertheless, it still probably started with 20+ solar masses of material, and it will still explode in about 100,000 years. At this point, they believe, it is still burning helium in its core and is nowhere near going boom.   It's always cool when completely different techniques can narrow in on more precise values. We are amateur astronomers who love looking up at the night sky and this podcast is for everyone who enjoys going out under the stars.   New vs. used: Baked in discount Cheaper way to try different things Less cost to buy try sell than new and get hit by depreciation Great out of production gear   Top 10 Ways to Choose Used Telescope Equipment: Dedicated Astronomy Classifieds: Buy through enthusiast platforms like  Cloudy Nights or AstroBuySell or online Japan Auction Sites rather than general marketplaces although I've had good luck on eBay too. Astronomy forums feature seller rating systems, community feedback, and knowledgeable owners who generally take better care of their optics. Inspect Glass and Mirrors for Mold or Coating Loss: A little dust on optics is normal, but avoid equipment with scratches, flaking coatings, or fungus/mold. Mold grows in damp storage conditions and permanently eats away at optical coatings. Test Mechanical Operations In Person: Arrange local pickup whenever possible to test the gear. Rack the focuser through its full range to ensure smooth motion, verify that mount lock knobs tighten properly, and check for wobbles or stripped threads. Verify GoTo Electronics and Tracking Motors: For computerized or tracking mounts, power on the unit to test motor slewing, controller screens, and firmware updates. Check battery compartments for acid corrosion, which frequently ruins neglected electronics. Compare Against Retail Pricing: Cross-reference the original retail listing to check the standard asking price (fair used prices generally hover around 60–75% of current retail) and confirm that missing essentials like counterweights, hand controllers, or finder scopes are accounted for in the deal. Ask for Close-Up Photos and "Pencil" Tests: If buying remotely, request high-resolution, unedited photographs of optics from multiple angles. Asking the seller to place a specific object (like a handwritten note) next to the gear helps verify that they actually possess the equipment. Inquire About Storage and Service History: Ask where the equipment was stored. Mounts kept in unconditioned sheds or outdoor garages are prone to rusted gears, degraded grease, and moisture damage. High-end mounts may also have a documented service history. Watch Out for DIY Modifications: Amateur astronomers frequently alter equipment. Ensure any past modifications—such as custom focuser upgrades, flocking, or drilled mounting plates—were executed professionally and won't hinder performance or future resale value. Evaluate Mount Payload Capacity Realistically: Don't evaluate a telescope tube in isolation; ensure the bundled or intended mount can handle the weight. For astrophotography, plan for a payload weight that is no more than half of the mount's advertised maximum capacity. Use Secure Payment Methods with Buyer Protection: When paying online or via long-distance shipping, always use payment channels that offer buyer protection (such as standard PayPal Purchase options rather than "Friends & Family") to safeguard against scams or damaged goods. Ensure the item is well protected with proper packaging. Today's 2 topics: - In an area which is about 1/400th of the entire sky, the NASA Kepler spacecraft has discovered 30 Earth like planets which are likely to have liquid water on their surfaces orbiting distant stars. These planets are likely to represent a tiny sample of the habitable planets which exist in the Milky Way. In spite of our efforts to find them, the question remains where are the alien civilizations? In a recent talk given at the Division of Planetary Sciences meeting Dr. Alan Stern of the Southwest Research Institute suggests that perhaps the majority of worlds with biology and intelligent civilizations exist on interior water ocean worlds where their existence is hidden by the thick layers of rock and ice which separate them from the hostile vacuum of space.   - Eighteen hours before my Catalina Sky Survey teammate Rose Matheny first spotted 2017 UJ2, a small space rock with our Schmidt telescope on Mt. Bigelow, Arizona it had passed less than the Earth's diameter from the surface of our planet. Rose was able to discover this Smart Car sized space rock after it moved out of the Sun's glare. At this point it was about the Moon's distance from her and was traveling away at 3.4 mi/s. Two NSF NOIRLab facilities contributed data to the map: the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Mayall telescope and the NSF Blanco telescope, equipped with the U.S. Department of Energy-fabricated DECam. In this podcast, Dr. John Moustakas discusses the surveys, the data and how it will impact future astronomical research.    Dr. John Moustakas is an associate professor of physics and the Department Chair in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Siena University. His broad research interests are in observational cosmology and astrophysics, with a focus on using the most powerful telescopes on earth and in space to understand how galaxies have formed and evolved (changed) in a 14 billion-year universe which is dominated by dark matter. At least once in our lives, we've all seen a bright streak of light briefly blaze across the sky and have quickly referred to it as an asteroid, meteor, shooting star, comet, or some other whimsical name we've heard others use to describe it. For those calling it a meteor, you would be correct, but we'll touch upon this later. The time it takes for a space rock, bolide being its scientific name, to travel through Earth's atmosphere and crash into the ground literally takes only a few seconds. But what happens to a space rock during this very brief travel time, and how can scientists use this to learn about a specific space rock's origin and the potential damage it could cause if it explodes in mid-air?   Phase 1: Atmospheric entry;  Phase 2: Brightness begins;  Phase 3: Brightness increases with fireball appearance;  Phase 4: Brightness maintains while melting begins;  Phase 5: Front of rock begins to break apart;  Phase 6: Back of rock breaks apart;  Phase 7: Melting and breaking apart continue until glowing stops, followed by melting ending and wind discards crusted pieces. Today's 2 topics: - On Earth, human life is enabled by plants which provide us with calories, vitamins, fuel, medicines, and oxygen to breathe. In addition, recent scientific studies indicate that plant cultivation reduces anxiety and depression and has a positive influence on diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and longevity. Perhaps this is the reason that 80% of the cultivated plant species on planet Earth are not used for any food related purpose. On long duration space missions astronauts live in close quarters isolated from the natural world where the basic activities like eating, sleeping, and attending to bodily functions are difficult and stress producing.    - On it's gravitational leash, Earth's pet space rock, 2016 HO3, accompanies us at a distance of between 38 and 100 times the Moon's distance from Earth as we both travel about the Sun. As this tiny asteroid orbits the Sun it spends about half of its time inside the Earth's orbit where it moves faster and passes ahead of us and the other half of its yearly path outside of our orbit which causes it to lag behind our home planet.
