Rewind Classic Movies is a podcast that revisits films the hosts watched as kids, even if they didn't fully grasp the adult themes at the time. New episodes are released every week. The main show, REWIND, focuses on VHS and DVD movies from their childhood, while the FAST FORWARD segment explores sequels, modern remakes, rankings, and more.

WHY WE LOVE STAR WARS 15.09.2026 59minHello there! What is it about Star Wars that makes people keep coming back to it decades later? For some people, it's as simple as Luke Skywalker being a childhood hero. For others, it's the music, the spaceships, the worlds, the battles or simply the memories of discovering those films as a kid. And then there are the things that are much harder to explain. In this special episode of Rewind Classic Movies, GB is joined by Jody Martin and Rick Martin from the Now That's What I Call DAMN Good Music podcast to talk about one of the biggest questions we could possibly ask: why do we love Star Wars? This isn't a breakdown of one particular film. Instead, we're looking at the things that made Star Wars such an enduring part of our lives and why its appeal can be so difficult to explain to someone who didn't grow up with it.We talk about childhood memories, the strange feeling of seeing films for the first time, the incredible music, the characters we grew up with, the worlds that seemed so much bigger than what was actually shown on screen, and the details that left us imagining what might exist just beyond the edge of the frame. We also get into the Star Wars fandom itself, including the experience of sharing that enthusiasm with other people and passing it on to the next generation. And, naturally, no conversation between three Star Wars fans could possibly finish without getting into favourite characters, planets, music, ships, scenes and movies - with some surprisingly controversial choices along the way.We would be honored if you would join us as we try to work out why, after all these years, we still love Star Wars.Next week: More Star Wars as we Rewind one of GB's all-time favourite movies and finally educate AJ on that mass-murdering farm boy led astray by his father's killer. Yes, it's 1977's A New Hope (as it's now called).Get involved:⭐️ Leave us a review on your podcast platform - it really helps the show grow! THE 10 WORST MOVIE REMAKES EVER MADE 08.09.2026 48minIn this episode of Fast Forward, GB and AJ tackle one of cinema's most dangerous subjects: movie remakes. Following on from our recent discussion about Clash of the Titans, we're looking at ten examples of remakes, reboots and reimaginings that, for one reason or another, failed to live up to what came before. But there's an important distinction to make.Calling something one of the worst movie remakes doesn't necessarily mean we think it's an objectively terrible film. A remake can be perfectly watchable on its own while still being a disappointing version of a much-loved original. That's because people are rarely able to watch a remake with a completely blank slate. We bring our memories of the original with us - the performances, characters, humour, atmosphere, music and all the little details that made it special. Including, in no small part, the nostalgia. And that's where things get interesting. For this episode, GB and AJ have each chosen five films, without knowing exactly what the other has picked. They'll count down in reverse order before revealing their personal choice for the worst remake ever made. Some of the films discussed were criticised heavily at the time. Others have their fans and defenders. Some are technically impressive but lack the personality of their predecessors, while others simply seem to miss what made the original work in the first place. And then there's the question of whether some of these films should even be considered remakes at all. What counts as a remake? Is a reboot the same thing? What about a reimagining that takes only the basic concept from an earlier movie? We've allowed ourselves a little flexibility - because we're here to talk about movies, not write the rulebook.Ultimately, this is a subjective list. Your favourite remake might be one of ours, or you might think we've completely lost the plot.So what do you think is the worst movie remake ever made?Next week: We Rewind one of GB's all-time favourite movies and finally educate AJ on that mass-murdering farm boy led astray by his father's killer. Yes, it's Star Wars! And we're starting with 1977's A New Hope (as it's now called).Get involved:⭐️ Leave us a review on your podcast platform - it really helps the show grow! CLASH OF THE TITANS (1981): Shakespeare with Monsters But No Titans?! 01.09.2026 1t 8minThis week, GB and AJ head back to 1981 for Clash of the Titans, the final feature film from legendary stop-motion pioneer Ray Harryhausen. With Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, Burgess Meredith and Ursula Andress (sort of) delivering grand, Shakespearean dialogue about gods, destiny, honour and death, while giant scorpions, Medusa, a mechanical owl and a bloody great sea monster wander around in the background, this is a fantasy film unlike anything else.AJ watches Clash of the Titans for the first time, while GB revisits one of his childhood favourites. We talk about Harryhausen's incredible career and the end of an era for this style of fantasy filmmaking, as well as the occasionally janky effects that already looked old-fashioned when the film was released in 1981.We discuss the incredible Medusa sequence, one of the film's most memorable and genuinely tense scenes, the creepy skeletal ferryman, the witches, giant scorpions, Calibos, Bubo the owl and, of course, the legendary command to...RELEASE THE KRAKEN!There's also the small matter of Greek mythology, Cornwall pretending to be ancient Greece, Laurence Olivier apparently forgetting his lines, Arnold Schwarzenegger nearly playing Perseus and the original plans for an even darker ending. But one question continues to bother us.Why is a film called Clash of the Titans filled with gods, monsters, Gorgons and the Kraken......when there aren't actually any Titans?Has this 1981 fantasy classic aged badly, or is there still something magical about Harryhausen's old-school filmmaking? Can practical effects and imagination overcome some very visible matte lines? And can a film be both incredibly grand and completely ridiculous at the same time?Join us as we revisit Clash of the Titans and decide where it belongs in our Rewind Classic Movies rankings.Next week: We Fast Forward to look at the Top 10 Worst Movie Remakes Of All Time, thanks to the inspiration of the Clash's 2010 follow-up.Get involved:⭐️ Leave us a review on your podcast platform - it really helps the show grow! THE BIGGEST MOVIES OF 1991 25.08.2026 44min1991 was one hell of a year for movies. In this episode of Fast Forward, GB and AJ count down its ten highest-grossing films - from huge blockbusters and Disney favourites to comedies, thrillers and some films that might surprise you by making the list. But this isn't just a box-office countdown.Along the way, we get into childhood memories of discovering spoof movies, debate whether one of the year's most celebrated films is actually overrated, revisit some very memorable performances, and uncover a few surprising connections between the directors and stars behind these movies. There's also a look at why one particular film became such an important part of the history of Rewind Classic Movies, some unexpected career choices from major Hollywood names, and a discussion about whether the biggest movie of the year was actually the best. And, naturally, GB and AJ get distracted by several completely unrelated pieces of movie trivia along the way.Which films made the biggest money in 1991? Which ones have stood the test of time? And which movie would GB and AJ actually put at number one? You'll have to listen to find out.Next week: It's the Pick of the Patreons as we let them choose what we Rewind - and it's the 1981 version of Clash of the Titans!Get involved:⭐️ Leave us a review on your podcast platform - it really helps the show grow! HOOK (1991): Mermaid 3-way, Michael Jackson's musical and a gay Captain? 18.08.2026 1t 11minWe’re heading back to Neverland for Steven Spielberg’s Hook (1991) - a film we both loved as kids, but which hits very differently when you watch it as an adult.Dustin Hoffman gives us one of the great pantomime villains as Captain Hook. But beneath the flying, pirates and imaginary food fights, Hook is surprisingly packed with darker ideas about growing up, parenthood, work, ageing and losing touch with your imagination. And then there’s the weird stuff. We uncover the Michael Jackson Hook musical that almost happened; discover a Star Wars re-write of some dialogue; discuss why Dustin Hoffman and Bob Hoskins apparently played Hook and Smee as a gay couple; and reveal that the original Hook trailer used music from an entirely different movie. We also get into the Lost Boys, Rufio’s surprisingly dark fate, the film’s bizarre mermaid scene, Robin Williams’ improvisation, the cameos you probably missed, the incredible John Williams soundtrack, and the question we couldn’t quite answer: was it all actually a dream?Plus: why did Spielberg later say he was disappointed with Hook, why did critics hate a film audiences still love, and does Hook deserve the reputation it has?So grab your marbles, shout “Bangarang!”, and join us as we return to Neverland.Next week: We Fast Forward to look at the Top 10 Biggest Movies of 1991 and count down the box office smashes from ten to one. MOVIES YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE MISSED: 6 Patreon Picks 11.08.2026 27minWhat makes a movie underrated? Does it have to be obscure, forgotten, critically dismissed or a box-office failure? Or can a hugely successful film simply deserve a little more love?In this special episode of Rewind Classic Movies (due to AJ being trapped on a shipping container. The scheduled Rewind of Hook should hopefully arrive next week), GB digs into films recommended by the Rewind Patreon community - movies that our listeners think deserve to be watched, rewatched or simply remembered. And the definition of “underrated” gets pretty broad. We’ve got Steve Martin, John Malkovich and nuclear war. And a whole lot Moore.Along the way, we ask what “underrated” actually means - and whether a film really needs to be forgotten, unsuccessful or critically maligned to qualify.Because sometimes a film is simply one that someone loves enough to say:“You know what? I really love this one.”And that might be recommendation enough.Huge thanks to our Patreon community for supplying the recommendations and helping make this episode happen.Next week on the main Rewind show - a magical adventure to Neverland for our full review of Hook (1991).Get involved:⭐️ Leave us a review on your podcast platform - it really helps the show grow! 2026 SUPERGIRL: An S-Tier Start! (+ Spielberg's Disclosure Day) 30.06.2026 32minGB and AJ are back with another Fast Forward - this time following up last week's deep dive into the 1984 Helen Slater Supergirl with a look at the all-new 2026 version starring Milly Alcock. There's a twist, though. Only one of them has actually seen the new film. The other did go to the cinema this week - just not to see Supergirl.Instead, AJ caught the new Spielberg movie, Disclosure Day, with the family and the pair have thoughts on John Williams, the state of cinema-going, and why sneaking in a bag of supermarket popcorn still feels vaguely criminal even when you're a grown adult. Then it's over to GB, who did make it to see the 2026 Supergirl. How does Milly Alcock's take compare to Helen Slater's? Does the origin story hold up better this time around? And where does it land on the all-important tier rankings? They also touch on the wider DCU picture and the prospect of a Superman and Supergirl team-up, and why David Corenswet might just be the closest thing to Christopher Reeve we're ever going to get.Next week: We Rewind the pick of our Patreons who chose the 1985 Ridley Scott-directed Legend, starring Tom Cruise and Tim Curry!Get involved:⭐️ Leave us a review on your podcast platform - it really helps the show grow! MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (1987): Scariest Skeletor & Synths! 09.06.2026 1t 25minBy the power of Grayskull… they actually made this thing! This week GB and AJ are rewinding one of the most gloriously chaotic productions of the 1980s - a film that cost more than Robocop, made less than it spent, helped sink an entire studio, and somehow still managed to capture the hearts of a generation of kids who grew up watching it on dodgy recorded VHS tapes. Is it the He-Man movie fans deserved? Is it a cheap Star Wars knock-off? Is it something else entirely?Grab your power sword, because GB and AJ are heading to Eternia - briefly - then mostly to Earth - to find out.Next week: We Fast Forward almost 40 years to the 2026 version of Masters of the Universe! And, spoilers - WE ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! GO SEE IT!Get involved:⭐️ Leave us a review on your podcast platform - it really helps the show grow! WAYNE'S WORLD (1992): Schwing! Denied! NOTTTT! 26.05.2026 1t 11minWayne's World! Wayne's World! Party time! Excellent! 🤘It's February 1992, the EU is being born, the Winter Olympics are kicking off in France, and two headbangers from Aurora, Illinois are about to take over the cinema.GB and AJ strap on their baseball caps (well, one of them does) and rewind the SNL sketch that became a $180 million blockbuster. We're talking Penelope Spheeris, the three endings, Bohemian Rhapsody in a Mirthmobile, Alice Cooper's surprisingly deep history lesson, and whether Garth Algar is one of the greatest human creations in comedy history. Is it S tier gold or has nostalgia been doing the heavy lifting all these years? AJ's got complicated feelings. The Patreons do not.Schwing. Not. Game on.Next week: Inspired by the assortment of interesting faces appearing in Wayne's World, we look at the greatest movie cameos of all time!Get involved:⭐️ Leave us a review on your podcast platform - it really helps the show grow! PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES (1987): Strangers, Showers and Sobbing 12.05.2026 1t 10minJohn Hughes. Steve Martin. John Candy. A shower curtain ring salesman, a grumpy ad exec, and the most emotionally devastating comedy of 1987. This movie has 93% on Rotten Tomatoes but only 72% on Meteoritic. So where will we end up on it? (The Patreons will NOT be happy with AJ).We dig into what makes this film so beloved - and whether it holds up if you've never seen it before. Also: why Project Hail Mary is the best 80s film we've seen in years, and a deep dive into Roger Moore-era Bond.Next week: Inspired by the oddball partnership of Neal and Del, we pick our fantasy travel companions from the movies! TOP 10 MOVIE CARS: Muscle, Jet Engines and Rust Buckets 05.05.2026 51minGB and AJ rev up for their Top 10 Cars in Movies, following on from last week's Back to the Future. The lads each bring five picks to the table, and while their tastes couldn't be more different - one loves a battered, characterful classic, the other goes full Hollywood spectacle - they find more common ground than expected. And there are a few moments where they get surprisingly close to picking the same thing for the first time ever. They might even pick from the same movie - but will it be the same car?!?Plus listener picks, honourable mentions, why they hate modern cars and AJ tells a story about a wheel falling off at 60mph.Next week: Inspired by vehicles, we look at a movie which heavily features them - even its title is a list of forms of transport!Get involved:⭐️ Leave us a review on your podcast platform - it really helps the show grow!
