Now, let’s explore what’s making news in aviation today.1.https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/business-aviation/2026-09-14/textron-merlin-unveil-uncrewed-skycourier-conceptTextron, Merlin Unveil Uncrewed SkyCourier ConceptSeptember 14, 2026Textron Aviation and Merlin have unveiled a concept for an autonomous cargo aircraft based on the Cessna SkyCourier. The proposed SkyCourier UX would replace the cockpit with a nose cargo door and use Merlin Pilot autonomous flight software instead of onboard pilots. The aircraft currently exists only as a design study and display model, with no customer or production timeline announced. Textron would provide the FAA-certified SkyCourier airframe, while Merlin would supply the autonomy system already tested on Cessna Caravans and Beechcraft King Airs. The concept targets a payload of about 6,000 pounds, space for three LD3 containers, and autonomous operations from unpaved runways. Textron and Merlin say it could fill a gap between small cargo drones and much larger military transports. They are also studying kneeling landing gear and integrated loading systems.Using an aircraft already in production would give the concept an established manufacturing and support base.Merlin is also advancing autonomy in other programs. Its software for U.S. Special Operations Command C-130J transports passed a critical design review in June, while New Zealand regulators recently accepted testing evidence for key Merlin Pilot components. The company is also working with Israel Aerospace Industries on autonomous freighter conversions.2.https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/futureflight/2026-09-10/joby-evtol-begins-week-flights-across-north-texasJoby eVTOL Begins Week of Flights across North TexasSeptember 10, 2026Joby Aviation has begun a week of electric air taxi demonstration flights across the Dallas-Fort Worth area, marking the first flights in Texas under the U.S. eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP) and the latest stop on the company’s 2026 Electric Skies Tour. The Texas project, known as Project Nexus, is one of eight proposals selected by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the FAA. Led by the Texas Department of Transportation, it includes Joby, Archer Aviation, Beta Technologies, and Wisk Aero, along with several operators and logistics partners.Through September 14, Joby plans to fly its four-passenger eVTOL between Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport and destinations across North Texas. Planned routes include a flight into the controlled airspace at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, a round trip to Arlington to demonstrate noise levels, and a route to Toyota Motor North America’s campus in Plano that Joby has proposed for future commercial service.Joby has also leased 45,000 square feet at Perot Field as a long-term operating base in North Texas. The FAA said data from the demonstrations will help determine how electric aircraft can be safely integrated into the national airspace system. The company is also highlighting its autonomous flight work. A Cessna 208B Grand Caravan equipped with the Superpilot system acquired through Joby’s purchase of Xwing’s autonomy division is taking part in a separate cross-country demonstration tour.Meanwhile, Joby says its eVTOL air taxi program is now in the fifth and final stage of FAA type certification. Its first FAA-conforming aircraft flew in March, although FAA pilots still need to conduct certification-credit flights before a type certificate can be issued.3.https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/futureflight/2026-09-09/amprius-boosts-energy-long-endurance-dronesAmprius Batteries Boost Energy for Long-endurance DronesSeptember 10, 2026Amprius Technologies plans to begin selling a 500 Wh/kg silicon-anode battery cell in the fourth quarter of this year. Put simply, Wh/kg measures how much energy a battery can store for each kilogram of weight. The higher the figure, the more energy can be carried at the same weight, which can help extend an aircraft’s range or endurance. The second-generation SiCore cell delivers 500 Wh/kg at a 1C continuous discharge rate and can be produced by contract manufacturers using standard lithium-ion equipment.Amprius already offers 500 Wh/kg cells under its SiMaxx line, but those require specialized in-house manufacturing and are produced in limited volumes. By contrast, SiCore is designed for existing production lines, which could reduce costs and improve scalability. The new cell is aimed mainly at high-altitude pseudo-satellites and fixed-wing drones, which need sustained energy over long periods rather than the high-power takeoff and climb demands of larger eVTOL aircraft.Amprius already supplies cells to Airbus subsidiary Aalto for its solar-powered Zephyr aircraft, which flew for 67 days in 2025. Other customers include drone manufacturers and operators such as Empirical Systems Aerospace, Nokia, and Matternet.Military and drone demand is also supporting the company’s growth. Second-quarter revenue reached $34 million, more than double the $15.1 million reported a year earlier. Amprius currently has access to more than 2 GWh of annual production capacity through manufacturing partners in China, South Korea, and the U.S.4. https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/hong-kong-economy/article/3367033/hong-kong-signs-2-mous-greater-bay-area-partners-commercialise-aerial-technology?module=latest&pgtype=homepage&utm_Hong Kong teams up with 50 partners to set standards for low-altitude aviationSeptember 10, 2026Hong Kong has secured support from more than 50 organisations to develop common standards for the low-altitude economy as the city seeks closer alignment with China’s national strategy for the sector. The initiative was announced at a low-altitude economy forum attended by Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan. Participating organisations include mainland Chinese eVTOL and telecommunications companies such as AutoFlight, EHang, China Telecom Global, and China Unicom Innovation Research Institute.Chan said no single city can establish global standards alone and highlighted Hong Kong’s common law system, aviation expertise, and status as an international financial and commercial hub as advantages for real-world testing. The government is also expanding its regulatory testing framework through “Regulatory Sandbox X,” which will cover more complex applications such as cross-boundary logistics and unconventional aircraft, including passenger-carrying vehicles.Hong Kong also signed two memorandums of understanding with mainland partners. One establishes a bilateral sandbox with Nansha in Guangdong, while the other involves a partner in central China. Officials said the agreements will combine the Greater Bay Area’s manufacturing and testing capabilities with Hong Kong’s strengths in research, standards setting, and regulation.More than 140 applications have already been approved for commercial low-altitude services, including deliveries, infrastructure inspection, and materials lifting. Another 33 more complex projects have been selected for testing under Sandbox X.Officials said Hong Kong aims to act as a “superconnector” for the sector, using its legal, regulatory, financial, and aviation strengths to promote common standards, commercialisation, and wider cooperation with Greater Bay Area and Belt and Road partners. The audio and content of this podcast shall not be used for AI model training or any other purposes. Kennedy Airport Forces Cancellation of Air China Intercontinental FlightSeptember 2, 2026In the early hours of local time August 31, a Boeing 747-8 aircraft belonging to Air China suffered ground damage during refueling operations at John F. Kennedy International Airport. While refueling hoses remained connected to the aircraft wing, the refueling vehicle moved abnormally and tore the aircraft refueling fittings, causing large volumes of aviation fuel to spill across the apron. Ground response teams and airport fire-fighting units quickly sealed off the accident site and carried out dilution treatment for leaked fuel. No personnel sustained physical injuries during the whole emergency response process. Nevertheless, damage to wing-mounted fuel system components forced the full cancellation of flight CA982 bound for Beijing Capital International Airport. Air China activated its pre-established contingency plan for disrupted international flights and arranged follow-up rebooking and accommodation services for stranded passengers. Technical teams carried out comprehensive inspection and assessment of the aircraft. Aviation safety authorities classify the airframe damage as minor. Relevant ground operation procedures are under official review and investigation to identify root causes of this ground safety occurrence.新闻3:https://news.carnoc.com/list/648/648372.htmlGeopolitical Risks Trigger Flight Disruptions at Major UAE AirportsSeptember 2, 2026On September 2, unstable regional security conditions led to widespread delays and partial cancellations at Dubai International Airport and Zayed International Airport in the United Arab Emirates. Meteorological records rule out bad weather as a direct cause, and flight disruptions stem mainly from shifting geopolitical risks across surrounding regions. Multiple departing flights out of Abu Dhabi heading for Cairo, Bahrain and Delhi experienced notable departure delays. One trans-ocean Emirates flight bound for New York was completely cancelled. Both major airports keep full operational status without full-scale shutdown. Airlines warn that flight schedules may still receive short-notice changes according to security evolution. Multiple countries have issued formal travel advisories reminding transit and destination passengers about regional uncertainties, possible temporary airspace adjustments and last-minute flight rerouting. Carriers have also allocated extra ground staff to handle increased passenger consultation demands inside airport terminals.新闻4:https://news.carnoc.com/list/667/667345.htmlSingapore Airlines Reveals New-Generation Cabin Products for Airbus A350 FleetSeptember 2, 2026Singapore Airlines has unveiled its complete set of new cabin products for the Airbus A350 fleet, with commercial launch scheduled for the first week of November 2026. Now, let's explore what's making news in aviation today.1.AINsight: Go-arounds Are a Normal and Expected OutcomeBy Stuart “Kipp” Lau • Contributor - SafetyAugust 28, 2026Earlier this month, the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) issued a safety notice warning aircraft operators and pilots about an unacceptable rise in unstable approaches that continue to land rather than go around. The regulator, citing historical data, said this practice makes a subsequent adverse event 80 to 100 times more likely.Safety Notice SN-2026/008 “sets out the actions that operators are expected to take within their operational, safety management, and training systems to reduce the incidence of unstable approaches continued to landing and to reinforce the go-around as a normal, expected, and well-practiced response.”A stabilized approach is a well-established defense against approach and landing accidents. The practice is effective at reducing runway excursions, hard landings, tail strikes, and runway contact events. However, according to the CAA, data from mandatory occurrence reports and operator safety data indicated a concerning negative trend. The regulator acknowledged the fact that an unstable approach does not always result in a negative outcome; in many cases, these approaches that continue without a go-around conclude with an uneventful landing. The CAA safety notice identifies unstable approaches continuing to land as a persistent issue that affects aviation safety. The uptick in these events was described as a “concerning trend.”The reality is the lack of go-arounds from unstable approaches is a decades-old problem. FAA ASIAS data has historically shown a lack of compliance in go-arounds from unstable approaches. The fact that only 3% to 5% of unstable approaches result in a go-around—meaning 95% to 97% continue to land—is problematic. The CAA safety notice places an emphasis on a go-around as a normal and expected outcome of an unstable approach. This is sound advice. A go-around is not an “emergency,” and any professional pilot should be confident and comfortable flying the maneuver. In addition, a pilot’s decision to go around must be supported by unambiguous SOPs and a no-fault go-around policy.Absent from the CAA’s analysis is a discussion about those flight crews that continue the unstable approach and land. Outside of those exceptional circumstances specifically defined by the CAA (a hazard that makes the go-around a greater safety risk), there are very few legitimate reasons to continue an unstable approach to a landing.Deviating from established SOPs is a slippery slope and is indicative of either intentional noncompliance, a breakdown in crew resource management, or a failure of leadership by the pilot-in-command. The potential negative consequences of continuing an unstable approach far outweigh the favorable outcomes of a go-around.AINsight: Aircraft Go-arounds Are a Normal and Expected Outcome | Aviation International News2.Vertical Lift Groups Extend Trade Show PartnershipBy Charles Alcock • Managing EditorAugust 26, 2026The European Helicopter Association (EHA) and Vertical Aviation International (VAI) are extending their joint hosting of the annual European Rotors trade show through 2032, they said yesterday. The next staging of European Rotors will be from November 30 to December 3 in Lyon, France, before moving to Milan for the 2027 event. According to VAI and EHA, more than 5,400 attendees are expected this year, as well as 260 exhibiting companies from 70 countries. This week, EHA chairman Fredrik Kämpfe visited VAI’s headquarters in the Washington, D.C. area for discussions with its president and CEO, François Lassale, and the association’s management team. The groups plan to work more closely together to support their combined memberships, which include helicopter operators, manufacturers, and industry professionals in more than 60 countries.“European Rotors has shown what EHA and VAI can build when we work as true partners,” Lassale said. “Continuing this relationship lets us extend that same spirit of collaboration to the bigger questions facing our industry: safety, sustainability, and the future of vertical flight for members on both sides of the Atlantic.”The two associations have been working in tandem on international regulatory issues such as the safe integration of beyond-visual-line-of-sight drone operations. Other topics covered include electronic conspicuity and the development of practical right-of-way rules for airspace shared by crewed and uncrewed aircraft.Vertical Lift Groups Extend European Rotors Trade Show Partnership | Aviation International News3.TSB: Rotorcraft Prone To Lost Visual Reference AccidentsBy Amy Wilder • WriterAugust 26, 2026Loss-of-visual-reference accidents are more likely to involve helicopters than airplanes, according to a series of Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) investigations. Reviewing 5,177 Canadian airplane and rotorcraft accidents recorded from 2000 to 2021, investigators found a total of 95 involving a loss of visual reference: 68 of 4,378 airplane accidents versus 27 of 799 helicopter accidents—a rate more than double that of airplanes. The TSB has linked part of that disparity to Canadian regulations that do not require commercial helicopter operators to train pilots or equip aircraft to recover from inadvertent flight into instrument meteorological conditions (IIMC), relying instead on an avoid-at-all-costs strategy that investigators have called unrealistic.Four recommendations were issued by the TSB to Transport Canada as a result of these investigations: require commercial helicopter operators to ensure pilots possess the skills to recover from IIMC; require implementation of technology to assist with IIMC avoidance and recovery; require single-pilot operators under Subpart 604 and Part VII of the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) to develop SOPs based on corporate knowledge and industry best practices; and enhance requirements for helicopter operators conducting reduced-visibility operations in uncontrolled airspace. Some Canadian operators have voluntarily gone beyond current regulatory minimums, the TSB found. It cited enhanced winter training, close monitoring of pilots for pressure to fly in marginal conditions, simulator-based IIMC recovery training, and dispatching aircraft equipped with radar altimeters and synthetic vision systems as measures already adopted by some operators. The recommendations draw heavily on three recent TSB investigations into VFR helicopter missions that lost visual reference in flat light and whiteout conditions. All three resulted in accidents—one fatal. The TSB also pointed to a gap between helicopter and fixed-wing requirements for reduced-visibility operations in uncontrolled airspace. Rotorcraft may be authorized to operate in visibility as low as half a statute mile below 1,000 feet agl—half the one-statute-mile minimum required of fixed-wing aircraft. Unlike airplane operators under the same authorization, they need not carry an artificial horizon, directional gyro, or GPS, nor complete annual IFR training.Citing the Royal Canadian Air Force, the report noted that one to two hours of annual instrument flight training, ideally supplemented with quarterly training, would give a VFR pilot a chance of surviving an IIMC encounter. From 1988 to 2022, the RCAF recorded 27 helicopter incidents attributed to loss of visual reference or IIMC; in 19 of those, IIMC and instrument flight training, procedures, or instrumentation were credited with contributing to a successful recovery.TSB Canada: Helicopter Loss-of-visual-reference Accidents Twice as Likely | Aviation International News4.Jetcraft Bullish on Preowned Business Aircraft MarketBy Charles Alcock • Managing EditorAugust 25, 2026Jetcraft is bullish on prospects for the preowned business aircraft sector for the remainder of 2026, anticipating balanced growth opportunities in a midyear report issued this week. The broker concluded that the market is emerging more stable from the post-pandemic adjustments that some commentators have interpreted as a slowdown. For the rest of this year, Jetcraft indicated that increased output of new aircraft and changes in tax rules could be key drivers of trading conditions. “Production rates are gradually improving, inventory is beginning to recover in selected segments, and policy changes—including the introduction of 100% bonus depreciation in the U.S.—may encourage additional activity before we ring in a new year,” said CEO Chad Anderson.According to the company, it was both “inevitable and necessary” that the post-Covid surge in demand was curtailed, and in its wake the business aviation market is more robust. “Global wealth continues to expand, international business travel remains resilient, and private aviation has become more firmly established as a productivity tool for corporations, entrepreneurs, and family offices, rather than simply a discretionary luxury.”Jetcraft’s first-half 2026 report made no direct mention of the ongoing military conflicts in the Gulf and Ukraine, or macroeconomic concerns over U.S. government debt and inflationary pressure. However, the company did acknowledge significant variations in market conditions in different regions. For instance, limited inventory in North America has resulted in aircraft being sourced from Europe, where national economies are generally weaker. According to Jetcraft, the Middle East and Southeast Asia continue to generate strong demand for large-cabin models.“Increasingly, successful transactions depend on understanding global market dynamics rather than local ones,” Anderson commented. “And, despite geopolitical uncertainty, buyers have remained engaged and transactions have moved forward at a healthy pace.”Jetcraft Remains Bullish on Preowned Business Aircraft Market | Aviation International NewsThe audio and content of this podcast shall not be used for AI model training or any other purposes. The new funding will support certification of the Eco Caravan and the 570-kilowatt AMP-H570 powertrain, while also expanding production capabilities, supplier development, aftermarket support, and operations under the FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). Ampaire expects to achieve type certification for both the AMP-H570 and Eco Caravan in 2027. The company says the Eco Caravan can reduce fuel consumption by 54% to 57% compared with a conventional turboprop Caravan. Meanwhile, Ampaire is working with IAG to explore hybrid-electric auxiliary power unit (APU) applications for existing and new commercial aircraft, with the aim of reducing fuel consumption and emissions during ground operations. The financing comes as some competitors are scaling back their hybrid-electric programs, while Ampaire continues to pursue the commercialization and large-scale deployment of its technology.https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/futureflight/2026-08-19/whisper-aero-flies-electric-glider-its-quiet-fans2.Whisper Aero Flies Electric Glider on Its Quiet FansU.S. aerospace start-up Whisper Aero has announced the first powered flights of its Whisper Powered Swift, an experimental glider equipped with two eQ250 electric ducted fans. The flight-test campaign was conducted at the company’s facility in Crossville, Tennessee, where test pilot Zac Majors completed three flights totaling more than 130 minutes. According to Whisper, all planned test objectives were achieved, marking the transition of the program from gliding validation flights to powered flight testing. The Whisper Powered Swift uses a modified Aériane Swift 3 glider as a flying testbed for Whisper’s electric propulsion technology. Its two eQ250 propulsors can deliver up to 85 pounds of static thrust each and are powered by five Epic 1.0 battery modules. With a 26:1 lift-to-drag ratio, the glider can remain airborne for extended periods on limited battery power, giving engineers more time during each flight to evaluate propulsion performance, acoustics, and handling qualities. Before the powered flights, the program completed progressively ballasted gliding tests, aircraft integration testing, formal readiness reviews, and 1,000 hours of ground-based propulsion life testing. The project has also received a $500,000 grant from the state of Tennessee and is being conducted in cooperation with Tennessee Tech University to demonstrate quiet electric flight. Whisper Aero is developing its low-noise and efficient propulsion technology for a wide range of applications, including military drones, regional aircraft concepts, and consumer products. By pursuing both civil and defense markets, the company aims to address the aviation industry’s challenges of reducing aircraft noise while achieving the cost and efficiency levels required for broader commercial adoption.https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/business-aviation/2026-08-24/louisiana-airport-receives-third-fbo3.Sky X Marks the Spot with FBO at Hammond NorthshoreSky X has opened a new fixed-base operator (FBO) at Hammond Northshore Regional Airport (KHDC) in Louisiana, bringing the airport’s total number of FBOs to three. • Archer Aviation Acquisition 22.08.2026 12min
Welcome back to the Aviation Newsletter, your go-to podcast for the pulse of everything that flies. I’m Priscilla, and this podcast is powered by the team at Starrime. Whether you’re a lifelong aviation enthusiast, a frequent flyer or simply curious about the world above the clouds, we’re truly grateful to have you with us. This year, we’ll continue to bring you deeper insights, compelling stories from the industry and updates on the technology shaping the future of flight. We always welcome your thoughts and feedback in the comments. The podcast remains available in both English and Chinese. Thank you for being on this journey with us. Now, let’s explore what’s making news in aviation today.1. https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/futureflight/2026-08-10/archer-acquire-wisk-insitu-and-skygrid-boeingArcher To Acquire Wisk, Insitu, and SkyGrid from BoeingAugust 10, 2026Archer Aviation will acquire autonomous eVTOL developer Wisk Aero, defense drone manufacturer Insitu, and airspace management software company SkyGrid from Boeing in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $1 billion. Under the agreement, Boeing will receive shares equal to 19.75% of Archer’s outstanding Class A stock and gain a seat on Archer’s board. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026.The acquisition significantly expands Archer beyond its core eVTOL air taxi business. Wisk brings autonomous flight technology, including flight-control computers, sensors, and radar systems developed for its pilotless Gen 6 eVTOL. SkyGrid adds AI-based airspace management software, while Insitu provides an established defense drone business with more than 3,500 uncrewed aircraft deployed and customers in 35 countries.Insitu also gives Archer an immediate source of revenue, generating more than $200 million annually. Archer plans to combine technologies from the three businesses with its “Zee” aerospace and defense AI model as it develops a broader autonomous aviation platform. The deal also strengthens Archer’s growing defense business. The company recently unveiled Thunder, a hybrid-electric autonomous military aircraft developed with Anduril, as well as its commercial counterpart, Halo. Neither aircraft has flown yet.The acquisition is particularly notable because Wisk and Archer were once legal rivals. Wisk sued Archer in 2021 over alleged theft of trade secrets before the companies settled in 2023, with Wisk becoming Archer’s exclusive provider of autonomous flight technology.Meanwhile, Archer continues to pursue FAA certification of its four-passenger Midnight eVTOL. The aircraft is now in the fourth and final phase of type certification, while flight testing continues in California. Archer reported $1.6 billion in liquidity at the end of the second quarter and said completing and integrating the Boeing transaction will be a major priority for the remainder of the year.2. Heart Aerospace Flies X1 Electric Demonstrator Aircraft | Aviation International NewsHeart Aerospace Flies X1 Electric Demonstrator AircraftAugust 13, 2026Heart Aerospace has completed the inaugural flight of its X1 technology demonstrator aircraft, which the start-up said is the largest battery-electric aircraft ever flown. The milestone—which lasted a total of 27 minutes—took place on Thursday from California-based Heart’s flight test base at New York’s Plattsburgh International Airport.“With the first flight of X1, Heart Aerospace has demonstrated electric flight at the scale of a commercial airliner,” said founder and CEO Anders Forslund. During the flight, which was conducted under an FAA Experimental Category Special Airworthiness Certificate (SAC-EC), the aircraft reached an altitude of 1,100 feet agl while its all-electric propulsion system delivered over one megawatt of power. Heart’s X1 full-scale demonstrator is the precursor of its thirty seat ES-30 hybrid-electric regional airliner, which the company intends to enter service in 2031. While Heart claims the X1 is “representative” of its upcoming production aircraft, it is currently developing “the first pre-production ES-30” at its pilot manufacturing plant in Los Angeles. It hopes to start flying this demonstrator in 2028. The X1 demonstrator was first publicly unveiled from Heart’s former Swedish headquarters in September 2024. At the time, Heart said it intended to start flight testing in the second quarter of 2025, with a subsequent X2 pre-production prototype to commence flying in 2026. Announcing a permanent move to the U.S, Heart revealed it would be flying X1 from Plattsburg after moving the aircraft from its Gothenburg, Sweden site in early 2025.3. https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/futureflight/2026-08-14/merlin-clears-certification-hurdle-ai-cockpitMerlin Clears a Certification Hurdle for AI in the CockpitAugust 14, 2026Few obstacles in autonomous flight have proved more difficult than convincing regulators that artificial intelligence can safely perform safety-critical functions. Merlin has now reached an important certification milestone with the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand (CAANZ), although its latest financial results show that commercial success remains distant.Merlin reached Stage of Involvement (SOI) 3 for two components of its Merlin Pilot autonomous flight system: the flight control computer and automated communication system. SOI 3 means CAANZ has reviewed and accepted testing evidence for both components, leaving one stage before final compliance. The work was coordinated with the FAA under a bilateral agreement.Merlin also closed an issue paper covering machine-learning-based natural language processing, which enables Merlin Pilot to conduct voice communications with air traffic control. The company aims to provide full-phase autonomy from takeoff to touchdown. The certification program is being conducted under Part 23 using a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan as the test aircraft. Merlin is also developing its Condor product family for larger Part 25 transport-category aircraft and has partnered with Israel Aerospace Industries to pursue autonomous conversions of Boeing and Airbus freighters.Competitor Reliable Robotics is pursuing FAA certification for its own autonomous Caravan system, targeting approval in 2028. Unlike Merlin, however, its system leaves radio communications to a ground operator.Despite its certification progress, Merlin remains far from profitability. Second-quarter revenue fell 29% year over year to $2.2 million, with almost all revenue coming from the U.S. government. The company spent $27.3 million during the quarter but ended June with $183.9 million in cash and no debt, which it expects will fund operations into fiscal 2028.Merlin is also developing autonomous systems for military aircraft, including the C-130J and Boeing KC-135, and expects its first operational Merlin Pilot system within three years.4.https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/business-aviation/2026-08-10/embraer-racks-record-performances-second-quarterEmbraer Racks Up Record Performances in Second QuarterAugust 10, 2026Embraer continues to post record results, reporting second-quarter revenue of $2.2 billion, an all-time high and a 23% year-over-year increase. The Brazilian manufacturer also reached a record backlog of $34.5 billion, up 16% from a year earlier. The company’s executive aviation division performed particularly strongly, with revenue rising 32% to $725 million. Embraer delivered 45 business jets during the quarter, including 24 Phenoms and 21 Praetors, compared with 38 aircraft in the same period last year.Executive Jets backlog increased 5% year over year to a record $7.8 billion. Despite higher deliveries, the division maintained a book-to-bill ratio above 1:1, indicating that new orders continue to exceed deliveries as demand remains strong.Embraer delivered 74 executive jets during the first half of the year, representing 45% of its full-year guidance of 160 to 170 aircraft. The company plans to increase annual executive jet production capacity to more than 200 aircraft by the end of the decade. However, supply chain issues continue to delay some deliveries.Executive jet margins also improved, rising from 20.9% a year earlier to 23.8%, supported by higher volumes, improved pricing, lower U.S. tariffs, and a $60 million tax credit.Across its commercial and executive aviation businesses, Embraer delivered 65 aircraft in the second quarter, its strongest quarterly performance in 16 years. First-half deliveries reached 109 aircraft, up 20% compared with the same period in 2025.5.https://www.163.com/dy/article/L48EPJ3T0556J3TO.htmlRecently, the Flight Standards Department of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) released draft amendments for public consultation to three regulations: the Rules on the Certification of Civil Aircraft Pilots (CCAR-61), the Rules on the Certification of Commercial Non-Transport Operators (CCAR-136), and the Rules on the Certification of Civil Aircraft Pilot Schools (CCAR-141). Passengers need to book designated combined transfer tickets to get baggage‑through‑check benefits.新闻3:https://news.cctv.cn/2026/08/09/ARTIOmMWEG4y7qoQ3FEbTjkt260809.shtmlTwo Passenger Planes Nearly Collide with Only Meters of Clearance at Sydney Airport, AustraliaAugust 9, 2026In the early morning of local time August ninth, twenty twenty‑six, a serious near‑miss took place on the apron of Sydney International Airport in Australia. A Jetstar passenger aircraft bound for the Gold Coast nearly collided with a Qatar Airways plane being towed by ground vehicles. The distance between the two aircraft shrank to only several metres at the closest point. Pilots of the Jetstar flight applied emergency braking immediately and prevented a crash. One cabin crew member doing pre‑departure cabin checks fell and sustained minor injuries. More than one hundred passengers on board remained safe and unhurt. The involved Qatar Airways aircraft carried no passengers at that moment. Due to recent staff shortages within air‑traffic‑control positions, Sydney Airport has enforced traffic‑flow control, leading to delays for many arriving and departing flights. Australian aviation safety authorities have opened a formal investigation into this apron incident and will release follow‑up findings.新闻4:https://news.cctv.com/2026/08/08/ARTIU6vujAhgeG61klWiizJS260808.shtmlThe Federal Aviation Administration Releases Airworthiness Directive to Inspect Certain Boeing AircraftAugust 8, 2026On local time August 6, 2026, the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States issued an official airworthiness directive. This directive covers three Boeing aircraft models including the 737 MAX 8, 737 MAX 9 and 737 MAX 8‑200, affecting around 471 aircraft registered in the United States. The regulator states it has received operator reports about cracks found on fuselage sections of certain aircraft. Such defects may weaken structural integrity and create potential safety risks. This airworthiness directive will officially take effect on September 10, 2026. It requires relevant airlines to complete special structural inspections within required time limits. Any aircraft found with cracks must receive necessary repairs before returning to commercial service. Civil‑aviation authorities across other parts of the world will keep following this safety notice. • FAA Plans Transition to Unleaded Avgas 06.08.2026 13min
Welcome back to the Aviation Newsletter, your go-to podcast for the pulse of everything that flies. I'm Luna, and this podcast is powered by the team at Starrime. Whether you're a lifelong aviation enthusiast, a frequent flyer or simply curious about the world above the clouds, we're truly grateful to have you with us. This year, we'll continue to bring you deeper insights, compelling stories from the industry and updates on the technology shaping the future of flight. We always welcome your thoughts and feedback in the comments. The podcast remains available in both English and Chinese.Thank you for being on this journey with us. Now, let's explore what's making news in aviation today.1. FAA Releases Plan for Transition to Unleaded AvgasAugust 4, 2026As required by the 2024 FAA Reauthorization Act, the FAA has released “The Transition Plan to Unleaded Aviation Gasoline.” This initial version of the plan will be updated as new information is incorporated and phases of the plan are completed.Phase 1 requires completion of FAA approvals and authorizations for the three candidate unleaded fuels that have been fielded or are under development. “Phase 1 also includes comparison testing and reporting to facilitate more informed decision-making by the end users,” according to the FAA.The three fuels in Phase 1 are GAMI’s G100UL, which has been supplemental type certificate (STC)-approved for all spark-ignition piston aviation engines; Swift Fuels 100R, STC-approved for several engines but not yet for high-performance engines that require the detonation-protection features in 100LL; and LyondellBasell/VP Racing’s UL100, for which the companies hope to gain an FAA fleet-wide approval later this year covering certain aircraft and engines but not yet high-performance detonation-sensitive engines. The FAA and industry have partnered on the transition to unleaded avgas through the Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions initiative. As part of this effort, the FAA is testing the three fuels at its William J. Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This testing is “part of the first phase of the transition to address key questions concerning performance and compatibility,” and the FAA will update the transition plan after this phase is done.Meanwhile, both Swift Fuels and LyondellBasell/VP Racing are working with the FAA under the Piston Aviation Fuels Initiative on the fleet authorization program. The FAA is also working to expedite rollout of high-octane unleaded fuel using the STC pathway, for both GAMI’s G100UL (which is already STC-approved for high-octane engines) and Swift’s 100R.During the transition to unleaded avgas, which is supposed to happen by the end of 2030 in the continental U.S. and 2032 in Alaska—although the FAA has indicated that these deadlines may slip—the FAA is “encouraging airports to introduce unleaded fuel alternatives while requiring maintaining 100LL availability for aircraft through the transition.”The FAA is also holding airports to grant assurance obligations that require them to “continue to offer leaded 100LL until safe, fleet-wide unleaded alternatives are widely and locally accessible.”FAA Releases Plan for Smooth and Safe Transition to Unleaded Avgas | Aviation International News2. Australia Plans To Introduce Annual Aircraft RegistrationJuly 30, 2026The Australian government intends to introduce a digital annual registration requirement for all VH-registered aircraft starting next July. Before implementing the requirement, Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is seeking comments from the aviation industry. Currently, there is a one-off registration that remains valid indefinitely, supported by periodic updates. “In practice, this approach has proven inefficient and unreliable,” said CASA.Introducing an annual VH aircraft registration scheme “will support safety outcomes and data accuracy,” according to CASA. “Cost-recovery arrangements will be finalized following consultation.” An annual fee will start on July 1, 2028, one year after the annual registration requirement starts. “The levy would help CASA administer the scheme and maintain the digital registration system,” the authority said. There are three options proposed for structuring the annual registration cost: a $72 flat-rate levy applied to all VH-registered aircraft; between $50 and $250 per aircraft under a weight-based levy calculated using aircraft mtow; and between $40 and $500 per aircraft under a weight and category model.“Your feedback will help us refine the scheme and ensure it is practical, effective, and suitable for the aviation industry and broader community,” stated CASA. Comments are due by August 13.Australia Plans To Introduce Annual Aircraft Registration | Aviation International News3. New FBO To Land at Puerto Rico’s San Juan AirportJuly 30, 2026BlueSky San Juan, a $54 million FBO project, has broken ground at Puerto Rico’s San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (TJSJ). Spearheaded by industry veteran José Maldonado—who previously built the Pazos FBO at TJSJ, which was later sold to Jet Aviation—the complex represents the largest business aviation development on the island in more than a decade. The facility—scheduled for completion in third-quarter 2028 as the third service provider on the field—will feature an 8,000-sq-ft terminal, with executive and pilot lounges, conference and flight-planning rooms, and concierge services. An onsite U.S. Customs and Border Protection inspection facility will allow international arrivals to clear U.S. customs directly at TJSJ before continuing to the U.S. mainland. Also included will be a trio of 20,000-sq-ft hangars with 30-foot-high doors, capable of sheltering the latest ultra-long-range business jets, and enough privately financed ramp to accommodate the largest commercial passenger aircraft.Located off Runway 10, the FBO will allow aircraft to taxi directly to it within seconds of landing, minimizing ground movement and facilitating quick turns.“Business aviation continues to evolve, and Puerto Rico needs infrastructure that supports the next generation of international operators,” said Maldonado, BlueSky San Juan’s senior partner. He added that the facility has been designed “to deliver an elite experience while reinforcing Puerto Rico’s strategic role as the Caribbean gateway to the U.S. mainland.”New FBO To Land at Puerto Rico’s San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín Int’l Airport | Aviation International News4. Aviation Groups Unite To Address Runway IncursionsJuly 29, 2026Three international aviation industry groups are coordinating to reduce runway incursions worldwide, after years of high-profile close calls put renewed pressure on regulators and airport operators to act. The International Air Transport Association (IATA), the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO), and Airports Council International (ACI)—organizations representing airlines, air navigation service providers, and airports, respectively—have launched a joint initiative.“This initiative brings airlines, airports, and air navigation service providers together to identify runway risks earlier and take coordinated action,” said Nick Careen, IATA’s senior v-p of operations, safety, and security. The Joint Runway Safety Initiative centers on three areas: collecting better safety data, including near-collision reports and input from frontline staff; giving more weight to local runway safety teams, where airlines, airports, and air navigation service providers work out local risks together; and sharing lessons learned so effective mitigation can be adopted across airports with similar operating environments. The groups said the effort builds on existing programs, including the Global Action Plan for the Prevention of Runway Incursions (GAPPRI) and the ICAO Global Runway Safety Action Plan, and will draw on tools such as ACI’s Runway Safety Team Implementation Package and IATA’s Runway Incursion Safety Risk Assessment.“Runway safety depends on clear communication and coordinated decisions across the airport environment,” said Andrea Sack, CANSO’s senior v-p of global operations. The initiative follows years of heightened attention to runway safety in the U.S. as well as globally. FAA data showed that reported U.S. runway incursions alone have numbered close to 1,700 annually over the past six recorded years, with 1,758 in 2024. The NTSB issued more than a dozen related safety recommendations to the FAA in 2024, including calls for cockpit-based surface alerting technology. In March 2025, a U.S. Department of Transportation Inspector General audit found that the FAA analyzed incursion data on an airport-by-airport basis rather than agency-wide, making it harder to catch risks before they spread.“Airports sit at the center of this challenge, where every part of the aviation system converges,” said Darryl Dowd, ACI World’s v-p of safety, security, and operations. “Local knowledge and sustained collaboration are what turn safety guidance into real reductions in risk, and ACI is committed to supporting our members as they put these tools to work.”The initiative also draws on the runway safety checklist (co-developed by ACI and CANSO), a gap-analysis tool for airlines developed under GAPPRI, and IATA’s operational safety audit program, which reviews airline risk assessments and mitigation measures. Together, the three organizations represent a broad swath of the industry: IATA counts more than 370 member airlines accounting for roughly 85% of global air traffic, ACI represents more than 800 members operating over 2,200 airports in more than 160 countries, and CANSO’s members support more than 90% of the world’s air traffic.Global Aviation Industry Groups Launch Joint Runway Incursion Initiative | Aviation International NewsThe audio and content of this podcast shall not be used for AI model training or any other purposes. This, he said, is putting pressure on the young, used market inventory at a time when many in-service helicopters are nearing their replacement cycles. He explained that since production lines for military and civil helicopters are often comingled, increasing demand from the former is also affecting OEM order books. Conflicts such as the Iran war may affect investment strategies, with some potential owners opting for short-term leases instead of ownership of newer helicopters like the Airbus H160 medium twin.“We can give the opportunity to any client to try them, so short-term lease, two, three years becomes a possibility on that type, so the client can really assess the aircraft and see if they want to move on with the acquisition,” Lubrano said.Another factor going forward in the year is the start of fire season in the U.S. and Europe, with many aircraft occupied with firefighting contracts. Rotorcraft dealers and completions houses are gearing up for that.https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/futureflight/2026-07-22/japanese-leasing-group-backs-archers-halo-utility-drone2.Japanese Leasing Group Backs Archer's Halo Utility DroneBy CHARLES ALCOCK • Managing EditorJuly 22, 2026Japanese leasing group Marubeni Aerospace is helping Archer Aviation find use cases for the Halo autonomous aircraft it unveiled at the Farnborough International Airshow this week. The hybrid-electric model is part of a family of dual tiltrotor drones being developed by Archer and Anduril that also includes the Thunder military platform launched on Monday.Archer has not confirmed any range or payload details for the Halo or Thunder, but said the hybrid-electric powertrain it has developed in-house will be sufficient “to support global self-deployment.”Alternatively, the company explained, the aircraft can be packed into a standard shipping container for transport by air, road, rail, or sea, offering the multi-modal transport logistics required to reach where it needs to be.The partners expect to begin test flights of the Thunder/Halo prototype in 2027, but have not said when they will begin deliveries. The companies said they have already flown what they described as “a full-scale surrogate aircraft.”Based on the powertrain Archer developed for its four-passenger Midnight eVTOL air taxi, the series’ hybrid-electric powertrain drives the rotors directly from electric motors and features a turbogenerator. The propulsion system also includes wing-mounted optimum-speed tiltrotors that vary the revolutions per minute to maintain efficiency through different phases of flight, reducing power demand and fuel burn in cruise as well as reducing noise to avoid detection by hostile forces during low-altitude approaches."Over the past eight years we've engineered, tested, and scaled the technology this platform is built on,” said Archer founder and CEO Adam Goldstein. “The powertrain, the batteries, the motors, the manufacturing. We partnered with Anduril to take all of that knowledge and build something new: a clean-sheet aircraft in a completely different class of range, speed and payload.”Archer envisages applications such as offshore energy support, freight deliveries, and humanitarian and medical support. The aircraft could also be deployed for various maritime missions."Currently, even in cargo transport operations that do not require onboard crew, flights are conducted with human pilots, absorbing the cost, scheduling constraints and human exposure that come with it," said Marubeni president and CEO Satoru Nakagawa. "Halo's unmanned, autonomous flight capabilities can address these challenges, and combined with its excellent range, payload capacity and VTOL capability, make it a highly suitable solution that we are pleased to introduce and support for our customers as a first strategic partner."https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/defense/2026-07-21/ahead-rest-mq-28-nears-australian-service3. Ahead of the Rest: MQ-28 Nears Australian ServiceBy DAVID DONALD • Contributor - UKJuly 22, 2026In 2028, the Royal Australian Air Force aims to become the first air arm in the world to field an advanced collaborative combat aircraft (CCA). Formerly known as the Loyal Wingman, the Boeing MQ-28 Ghost Bat has been developed entirely in Australia but has significant global opportunities, especially as it is arguably the most mature of the CCA programs. The MQ-28 first flew in February 2021, and the test fleet has accumulated some 230 hours over 200 sorties. Eight Block 1 aircraft were built, and the second of them—retired from test duties for some time—is on static display at the Farnborough International Airshow. The last three Block 1 air vehicles will follow shortly as six Block 2 aircraft take over the test burden.Among the Block 2’s improvements, the most obvious is a wing with 25% greater area, permitting an increase in maximum takeoff weight from 10,000 to 12,000 pounds and a corresponding rise in useful payload to 4,500 pounds. The internal weapons bays are longer, accommodating up to four Small Diameter Bombs or two missiles the size of the AIM-120 advanced medium-range air-to-air missile (AMRAAM). Boeing has developed a revised modular nose that allows different sensor payloads to be fitted, and a satcom antenna enables beyond-line-of-sight control.Boeing has established a production facility in Toowoomba, Queensland, which will initially build Block 2 aircraft. A Block 3 with further improvements is expected to enter production in 2029.The company’s test fleet has not flown that much, but because development is performed within the digital domain, testing is essentially a validation of modeling and results. Some notable capabilities have nevertheless been demonstrated in the air. In June 2025, an MQ-28 conducted find-fix-target missions in which it autonomously detected, tracked, and designated aerial targets within an assigned area.In December 2025, an MQ-28 destroyed a jet-powered drone target with an AIM-120 fired at the Woomera test range in South Australia. An operator aboard an RAAF E-7A Wedgetail airborne early warning and control aircraft controlled the CCA and authorized the engagement, while an F/A-18F Super Hornet provided targeting data across the networked force. Boeing is in talks with MBDA about launching a Meteor air-to-air missile from the MQ-28. Fit checks have been conducted, but no schedule has been set for the demonstration.Earlier this year, an MQ-28 flew three sorties from Naval Air Station Point Mugu in California in cooperation with the U.S. Navy, and in late June and early July the type took part in the Valiant Shield exercise in the Pacific. Nine sorties were flown from the island of Rota, north of Guam, among them operations with U.S. Air Force F-35s and F-15EXs. Three back-to-back sorties demonstrated a turnaround time between flights of just 19 minutes.International interest in the MQ-28 is high, and Boeing sees opportunities in many nations. In Germany, an industrial team has been formed to bid for air force requirements: Rheinmetall was named first as Boeing’s strategic partner, Rohde & Schwarz and Diehl Defence joined in June, and sensor and electronic warfare specialist Hensoldt has now completed the team. Internationally, Eaton (weapons launch and release systems) and Leonardo (Skyward infrared search-and-track sensors) have been named as partners.Boeing Australia designed the Ghost Bat as a simple aircraft with ease of operation and manufacturing in mind. Boeing Commercial Airplanes played a major role in designing the production system so that manufacturing facilities can be established easily and rapidly anywhere. For the MQ-28, the company favors small facilities in customer nations, allowing them to tailor their own air vehicles to national operational and sovereignty requirements.4. WoT? Experimental Elongated Airbus Wings To Fly Next Yearhttps://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/aerospace/2026-07-21/wot-experimental-elongated-airbus-wings-fly-next-yearBy CHARLOTTE BAILEY • WriterJuly 22, 2026Airbus has launched the next phase of its Wing of Tomorrow (WoT) development program, kicking off a three-year effort to assess the benefits and challenges of extended-length wingspans. With the first experimental folding wings due to commence assembly imminently, Airbus hopes to start testing the concept in flight on an Airbus A321neo testbed around the second half of next year.Wing efficiency is “one of the biggest levers we have to improve the performance of our aircraft,” Airbus technology project lead Richard MacPherson told reporters during a briefing at the Farnborough Airshow on Tuesday, adding that Wing of Tomorrow “has the potential to give the same, if not more, efficiency gains than next generation engines.” This program phase will analyze the performance benefits and aerodynamic qualities of longer wings, helping inform future narrowbody design decisions.Airbus has already started building various multi-meter-long devices intended to replace the upward-curving Sharklet wingtips that are standard on the A320 family. These will be built at Airbus’ Wing Technology Development Centre in Filton, England, before being flight-tested on its A321neo testbed in Toulouse, France.“In the air, these extension devices are going to replicate a folding wing that is latched and fully locked in its fully extended flight position,” MacPherson said. Separate ongoing ground-based demonstrations are exploring the mechanism by which a future wing might fold.Airbus validated early concepts through digital simulation, and MacPherson said the company has “performed intensive wind tunnel testing to really evaluate and optimize” different variants. Building on WoT concepts that pair a 17-meter (56-foot) main wing box with a five-meter (16-foot) folding section, he expects the extension devices “to be in that order of magnitude.”While Wing of Tomorrow lead Sue Partridge acknowledged that folding wings are nothing new—including within military applications—this technology has never been applied to a high-rate single-aisle commercial aircraft before. This phase comes as Airbus completes assembly of its first three ground-based wing demonstrators, which combine more than 100 technologies from 40 partners worldwide. Since 2014, the UK Aerospace Technology Institute program has put £227 million ($304 million) behind Wing of Tomorrow. The audio and content of this podcast shall not be used for AI model training or any other purposes. This, he said, is putting pressure on the young, used market inventory at a time when many in-service helicopters are nearing their replacement cycles.在评估今年上半年直升机市场状况时,卢布拉诺表示,各大原始设备制造商(OEM)漫长的生产交付周期,使最受欢迎机型的交付时间增加了数月,甚至数年。他指出,这一情况进一步加剧了机龄较新的二手直升机库存紧张,而与此同时,大量现役直升机也陆续进入更新换代阶段。He explained that since production lines for military and civil helicopters are often comingled, increasing demand from the former is also affecting OEM order books. Conflicts such as the Iran war may affect investment strategies, with some potential owners opting for short-term leases instead of ownership of newer helicopters like the Airbus H160 medium twin.卢布拉诺解释称,由于军用和民用直升机通常共用生产线,因此军用需求的增长也会影响OEM的订单安排。此外,像伊朗战争这样的地区冲突,也可能影响客户的投资策略。一些潜在买家可能更倾向于选择短期租赁,而不是直接购买像空中客车H160这样的中型双发直升机。“We can give the opportunity to any client to try them, so short-term lease, two, three years becomes a possibility on that type, so the client can really assess the aircraft and see if they want to move on with the acquisition,” Lubrano said.卢布拉诺表示:“我们能够为客户提供体验飞机性能的机会。通过两至三年的短期租赁,客户可以在实际运营中全面评估飞机是否符合自身需求,再决定是否采购。”Another factor going forward in the year is the start of fire season in the U.S. and Europe, with many aircraft occupied with firefighting contracts. Rotorcraft dealers and completions houses are gearing up for that.展望下半年,另一个影响市场的重要因素是美国和欧洲进入森林火灾季。届时,大量直升机将投入灭火任务。为此,为应对即将到来的森林火灾季,直升机经销商及飞机改装服务商正加紧部署相关工作,以满足即将到来的市场需求。https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/futureflight/2026-07-22/japanese-leasing-group-backs-archers-halo-utility-drone2.Japanese Leasing Group Backs Archer's Halo Utility DroneBy CHARLES ALCOCK • Managing EditorJuly 22, 2026Japanese leasing group Marubeni Aerospace is helping Archer Aviation find use cases for the Halo autonomous aircraft it unveiled at the Farnborough International Airshow this week. In June 2025, an MQ-28 conducted find-fix-target missions in which it autonomously detected, tracked, and designated aerial targets within an assigned area.虽然MQ-28试飞机队累计飞行时间并不算长,但由于大量研发工作在数字化仿真环境中完成,因此实际飞行试验主要用于验证数字模型和仿真结果。不过,该机已在实际飞行中展示出多项关键能力。2025年6月,一架MQ-28执行了“发现—定位—锁定目标”任务,其能够在指定空域内自主发现、跟踪并标定空中目标。In December 2025, an MQ-28 destroyed a jet-powered drone target with an AIM-120 fired at the Woomera test range in South Australia. Fit checks have been conducted, but no schedule has been set for the demonstration.2025年12月,一架MQ-28在南澳大利亚伍默拉试验场发射AIM-120先进中程空空导弹,成功击落一架喷气式无人靶机。此次任务中,一名位于澳大利亚皇家空军E-7A“楔尾”空中预警与控制飞机上的操作员负责控制MQ-28,并授权实施攻击;一架F/A-18F“超级大黄蜂”战斗机则通过网络化作战体系向其提供目标数据。目前,波音正与欧洲导弹集团(MBDA)就MQ-28搭载并发射“流星”空空导弹展开合作讨论。相关适配测试已经完成,但尚未确定正式演示时间。Earlier this year, an MQ-28 flew three sorties from Naval Air Station Point Mugu in California in cooperation with the U.S. Navy, and in late June and early July the type took part in the Valiant Shield exercise in the Pacific. Nine sorties were flown from the island of Rota, north of Guam, among them operations with U.S. Air Force F-35s and F-15EXs. Three back-to-back sorties demonstrated a turnaround time between flights of just 19 minutes. International interest in the MQ-28 is high, and Boeing sees opportunities in many nations. In Germany, an industrial team has been formed to bid for air force requirements: Rheinmetall was named first as Boeing’s strategic partner, Rohde & Schwarz and Diehl Defence joined in June, and sensor and electronic warfare specialist Hensoldt has now completed the team. Internationally, Eaton (weapons launch and release systems) and Leonardo (Skyward infrared search-and-track sensors) have been named as partners. Boeing Australia designed the Ghost Bat as a simple aircraft with ease of operation and manufacturing in mind. Boeing Commercial Airplanes played a major role in designing the production system so that manufacturing facilities can be established easily and rapidly anywhere. For the MQ-28, the company favors small facilities in customer nations, allowing them to tailor their own air vehicles to national operational and sovereignty requirements.波音澳大利亚公司在设计“幽灵蝠”时,坚持结构简洁、易于操作、便于制造的理念。波音民用飞机公司在MQ-28生产体系的设计中发挥了重要作用,使其制造能力能够在世界各地快速部署。针对MQ-28项目,波音更倾向于在客户所在国建设小规模生产设施,以便各国能够根据自身作战需求和主权要求,对飞机进行本土化定制。4. With the first experimental folding wings due to commence assembly imminently, Airbus hopes to start testing the concept in flight on an Airbus A321neo testbed around the second half of next year.空中客车(Airbus)正式启动“未来机翼”(WoT)项目的下一阶段研发工作,未来三年将重点评估加长翼展设计的技术优势及应用挑战。首批实验性折叠机翼即将进入组装阶段,空客计划于明年下半年在一架A321neo试验机上开展飞行测试,对相关技术进行验证。Wing efficiency is “one of the biggest levers we have to improve the performance of our aircraft,” Airbus technology project lead Richard MacPherson told reporters during a briefing at the Farnborough Airshow on Tuesday, adding that Wing of Tomorrow “has the potential to give the same, if not more, efficiency gains than next generation engines.” This program phase will analyze the performance benefits and aerodynamic qualities of longer wings, helping inform future narrowbody design decisions.空客技术项目负责人Richard MacPherson在周二举行的范堡罗航展上表示:“机翼效率是提升飞机性能最重要的技术抓手之一。”他指出,“未来机翼”项目有望实现与下一代发动机相当、甚至更大的效率提升。本阶段研发将重点评估加长翼展在飞行性能和空气动力学方面的表现,为空客未来单通道客机的机翼设计提供技术支撑。Airbus has already started building various multi-meter-long devices intended to replace the upward-curving Sharklet wingtips that are standard on the A320 family. These will be built at Airbus’ Wing Technology Development Centre in Filton, England, before being flight-tested on its A321neo testbed in Toulouse, France.目前,空客已启动多款数米长翼尖延伸装置的研制工作,以替代A320系列飞机现有的Sharklet。相关装置将在英国菲尔顿机翼技术开发中心完成制造,随后运往法国图卢兹,搭载A321neo试验机开展飞行测试,验证其空气动力学性能及工程可行性。“In the air, these extension devices are going to replicate a folding wing that is latched and fully locked in its fully extended flight position,” MacPherson said. Separate ongoing ground-based demonstrations are exploring the mechanism by which a future wing might fold.MacPherson表示:“在飞行测试中,这些翼尖延伸装置将模拟折叠机翼在完全展开并锁定状态下的飞行特性。”与此同时,空客还在同步开展地面验证工作,重点对未来折叠机翼的折叠机构及其工作机理进行测试与验证。Airbus validated early concepts through digital simulation, and MacPherson said the company has “performed intensive wind tunnel testing to really evaluate and optimize” different variants. Building on WoT concepts that pair a 17-meter (56-foot) main wing box with a five-meter (16-foot) folding section, he expects the extension devices “to be in that order of magnitude.”空客此前已通过数字仿真完成相关概念验证。MacPherson表示,公司还开展了大量风洞试验,对不同设计方案进行了全面评估和优化。根据“未来机翼”项目此前提出的设计方案,机翼由17米(56英尺)的主翼翼盒和5米(16英尺)的折叠翼段组成。他预计,此次试验采用的翼尖延伸装置尺寸也将与上述方案大体一致。While Wing of Tomorrow lead Sue Partridge acknowledged that folding wings are nothing new—including within military applications—this technology has never been applied to a high-rate single-aisle commercial aircraft before.“未来机翼”项目负责人Sue Partridge表示,折叠机翼并非全新技术,在军用航空领域已有较为成熟的应用。然而,将这一技术应用于高产量单通道民航客机尚属首次,因此在工程实现和产业化方面具有重要意义。This phase comes as Airbus completes assembly of its first three ground-based wing demonstrators, which combine more than 100 technologies from 40 partners worldwide. Since 2014, the UK Aerospace Technology Institute program has put £227 million ($304 million) behind Wing of Tomorrow.
