435 | When a Child Cheats Because They Have to Win: What's Really Happening in the Playroom? 17.09.2026 11minIn this episode, I answer a question about an 8-year-old who loves playing games but will do almost anything to make sure he wins—including cheating, changing the rules, and creating games where the outcome is stacked in his favor. When he does lose, he becomes angry, shuts down, or refuses to continue. I explain why our goal in CCPT is not to teach a child that losing is okay. That subtle shift gives us a therapist agenda. Instead, the therapeutic goal is for the child to eventually discover that even though losing may feel awful, he can handle it. I also explore what may be underneath the need to win, including low self-esteem, low frustration tolerance, anxiety, power and control, and the child's tendency to connect losing with being a loser and failing with being a failure. Rather than stopping the cheating or correcting the rules, we remain neutral, reflect feelings, provide encouragement that isn't tied to outcomes, and trust the child to work through these struggles in the playroom. Progress isn't that the child suddenly enjoys losing—it's that eventually he can lose, tolerate the disappointment, regulate himself, and say, "Okay, let's play again." 434 | What's Wrong With Our Field? Research. (A Call for the Next Generation of CCPT Research) 15.09.2026 11minIn this final episode of the What's Wrong with Our Field? series, I tackle what I believe is a significant gap in child-centered play therapy: research. We have decades of foundational research supporting CCPT, along with newer studies examining the model with specific populations and presenting concerns. But much of our foundational literature is now decades old, and I believe we need a new generation of research examining CCPT itself—its theory, its efficacy, and how its outcomes compare with more directive approaches. I share my vision for what that research could look like, including current comparative studies of directive and nondirective approaches, and why stronger contemporary evidence could influence graduate education, medical and legal systems, managed care, and the broader mental health field. Most importantly, this episode is a call to action. If you're a researcher, doctoral student, clinician interested in participating in research, or someone who can help write and publish it, I want us to begin connecting those pieces and building a stronger body of CCPT literature together. 433 | What Do You Say When a Child Asks If You Actually Like Them? 10.09.2026 19minIn this episode, I answer a question about an 11-year-old who repeatedly tells his therapist, "You don't really want to spend time with me," "You'd rather be somewhere else," and "You're only doing this for the money." Rather than treating these statements as questions that need to be answered or beliefs that need to be corrected, I explain why we need to look underneath them. For this child, these comments may reveal much deeper struggles with self-esteem, self-worth, identity, vulnerability, and trust in the relationship. He wants to believe the therapist genuinely enjoys being with him, but his own view of himself makes that difficult to accept. I also explore an important balance in CCPT: remaining adherent without becoming unnatural in the playroom. Sometimes reflecting content is enough; other times, a simple statement of fact or relational truth—"I'm here playing with you" or "I like spending time with you"—allows us to respond genuinely without taking over the conversation or rescuing the child from their feelings. The key is understanding why the child is asking and responding to the deeper work rather than getting caught up in the literal question. 432 | The Missing Piece in Your CCPT Training 07.09.2026 11minIn this episode, I talk about something I hear constantly from child-centered play therapists: "I'm the only CCPT in my office, I wasn't prepared to work with children, and I feel like I'm figuring this out by myself." Too many therapists are leaving graduate school and immediately being handed child clients without meaningful training in how to work with them. We try to fill those gaps with books, podcasts, conferences, and trainings, but Landreth identified something more than 20 years ago that remains essential today: video review is the path toward mastery in CCPT. I explain why training alone can give us information, but it can't show us what we're actually doing when we're sitting across from a child in the playroom. Having an experienced CCPT watch your sessions allows you to see where you're adherent, identify where you need to grow, and develop the confidence and competence that come from intentionally practicing the model over time. Whether that happens through coaching, mentorship, community, or reviewing your own sessions, my encouragement is simple: don't try to master CCPT alone. 431 | What Do You Do When a Child Says 'I'm Bored' in the Playroom? 03.09.2026 11minIn this episode, I answer a question about something nearly every child-centered play therapist will eventually hear: "I'm bored." When a child complains that there's nothing to do, asks why you never get new toys, or seems dissatisfied with the playroom, it can be surprisingly easy to take those comments personally and start questioning whether we're providing enough. I explain why boredom isn't evidence that your playroom is inadequate—it's communication. Anxiety, resistance, avoidance, power and control, discomfort with choice, or simply not knowing what to do with freedom can all show up as "I'm bored." I also discuss how to respond without getting pulled into explaining, defending, or justifying the playroom. Rather than answering the child's question literally, we can reflect the feeling or content and allow the child to sit in the discomfort of the moment. Ultimately, boredom is another behavior we need to approach with neutrality: it isn't about us, and we don't need to fix it. Our job is to provide the consistent CCPT environment, trust the child, and remain adherent while they figure out what to do with what they're experiencing. 430 | What's Wrong with Our Field? Supervision 01.09.2026 16minIn this episode of the What's Wrong with Our Field? series, I tackle a major challenge for child-centered play therapists: supervision from someone who doesn't understand or practice CCPT. When a supervisor works from a completely different theoretical orientation—or doesn't even work with children—their recommendations can directly conflict with the model we're committed to following. I discuss the difficult position this creates for supervisees, why adherence is often mislabeled as "rigidity," and why we cannot expect child-centered guidance from someone who isn't child-centered themselves. I also explore a larger problem with supervision: too often, there is no framework or structure designed to intentionally develop clinical competence. Supervision shouldn't simply be bringing in a random case and asking, "What do you want to talk about today?" I explain why CCPT supervision needs scaffolding, skill development, video review, and a clear path toward mastery—and what therapists can do when a qualified CCPT supervisor simply isn't available. 429 | "All We Do Is Play": When an Anxious Child Wants to Quit Therapy 27.08.2026 14minIn this episode, I answer a question about an 11-year-old with significant social anxiety who, seven sessions into CCPT, tells a parent that therapy is a waste of time because "all we do is play." I unpack what may actually be happening beneath that statement, including resistance, avoidance, parental expectations, and the overwhelming vulnerability therapy can create for an anxious child. I also explore the child's perfectionistic play and explain how anxiety, power and control, and low self-esteem often work together—especially when a child would rather destroy something than tolerate the experience of not getting it exactly right. I also address whether the therapist should bring the child's comments into the playroom—and why I wouldn't. Instead, I explain why our job is to reassure and educate the parent while protecting the child's trust and allowing therapy to unfold at the child's pace. With anxious children, we don't force or rush the work, but we also don't reinforce avoidance by allowing them to escape it. Sometimes "therapy isn't helping" is actually a sign that the child has reached a difficult and necessary part of the therapeutic process. 428 | What's Wrong with Our Field? Novelty and "Innovation" 25.08.2026 16minIn this episode, I continue the What's Wrong with Our Field? series by looking at our profession's fascination with novelty and innovation. I challenge the assumption that something new is automatically progress and argue that, for child-centered play therapists, real progress should be measured by two things: greater fidelity to the model and stronger evidence that the model works. When therapists feel uncertain, undertrained, or disconnected from a clear theoretical orientation, it becomes easy to keep reaching for the next technique, training, or intervention in hopes that it will finally make everything click. I also talk about why CCPT therapists are often labeled "rigid" and why I think we should stop apologizing for that. Faithful adherence is not stubbornness; it is clarity, competence, and confidence in the model. And I'm encouraged by a shift I'm starting to see in the field, with more clinicians openly talking about theoretical fidelity and the problems that come from mixing incompatible approaches. Maybe, finally, we are beginning to recognize that progress does not always mean adding more. Sometimes it means returning to what already works. 427 | How Anxiety Shows Up—and Changes—in the Playroom 20.08.2026 19minIn this episode, I answer several questions about two anxious girls whose play is giving us a fascinating look at what happens when children begin confronting the very things anxiety tells them to avoid. From putting sandy fidgets back into a bucket and intentionally leaving personal toys behind, to breaking open squishies, making enormous messes, and covering hands with paint, I explore how seemingly small choices can reflect meaningful shifts toward spontaneity, freedom, and reduced inhibition. I also discuss permanence play and why leaving personal objects in the playroom may be particularly meaningful for a child struggling with separation. I also look at a 12-year-old processing divorce, remarriage, and transitions between two homes through remarkably symbolic sand play, along with the creative way she invites her therapist into her artwork without directly surrendering responsibility. Throughout both cases, I explain why we don't need to decipher the meaning of children's play in order for CCPT to work—but understanding what we observe can help us recognize the incredible work children are already doing for themselves. These sessions are powerful reminders of what becomes possible when we remain adherent, provide unconditional acceptance, and give anxious children the freedom to confront their fears at their own pace. 426 | What's Wrong with Our Field? CCPT-ish 19.08.2026 13minIn this episode of the What's Wrong with Our Field? series, I tackle something I've been talking about for years: CCPT-ish. We have a complete, empirically supported model with known outcomes, but those outcomes are based on actually practicing child-centered play therapy. When we begin adding techniques, removing pieces, blending theories, or modifying the model whenever something else seems useful, we can no longer assume we're practicing the same intervention that the research supports. I explain why fidelity isn't about rigidity or perfection—it's about understanding the theory deeply enough to know what we're doing, why we're doing it, and what protects the integrity of the model. I also explore the larger problem of our field's obsession with innovation, integration, and whatever happens to be new. New doesn't automatically mean better, and complexity doesn't make therapy more effective. I believe the path forward is actually much simpler: understand your theoretical orientation, commit to it, and execute it with as much adherence as possible. When we stop practicing CCPT-ish and become fully grounded in CCPT, we can work with greater confidence, provide parents with clearer expectations, and trust the outcomes of a model that already works. 425 | How to Coach Parents Through Severe Power Struggles 13.08.2026 17minIn this episode, I answer a question about helping parents whose child has gradually taken control of the entire home. When a child constantly interrupts conversations, makes relentless demands, or escalates until everyone gives in, it's tempting to focus on stopping the behavior. Instead, I explain why we have to begin by understanding what's driving it. I discuss how power and control needs, inconsistent boundaries, and fractured relationships can combine to create these patterns, and why lasting change starts by helping parents see their child through a different lens—not by teaching them a list of techniques. I also walk through how therapists can coach parents to rebuild connection before focusing on behavior management. We explore why relationship always comes before skills, how giving children appropriate opportunities for choice and control can reduce power struggles, and why parents must be prepared for behaviors to intensify before they improve as new boundaries are established. This episode is a reminder that our greatest gift to parents isn't teaching them CCPT skills—it's helping them understand their child in a way that transforms the relationship. 424 | What's Wrong with Our Field? The Problem with ABA 11.08.2026 15minIn this episode of the What's Wrong with Our Field? series, I examine why I believe Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) remains one of the most concerning practices in pediatric mental health. I discuss its historical origins, the philosophy on which it was built, and why I believe its directive, compliance-focused approach stands in direct contrast to the principles of child-centered play therapy. I also explain why ABA continues to be widely recommended despite growing criticism from autistic adults and families, and why therapists need to be prepared to thoughtfully discuss these concerns with parents seeking guidance. I also explore the alternatives. Rather than simply criticizing ABA, I share why I believe CCPT provides a developmentally appropriate, relationship-based approach that honors the child while fostering emotional growth, self-regulation, and resilience. For families seeking in-home support, I also discuss DIR/Floortime as an approach that aligns more closely with child-centered principles. This episode is an invitation for therapists to become informed advocates who help families make treatment decisions based on evidence, values, and what best serves the child. Two spots left! 423 | What If a Child Tells You to Stop Talking? 05.08.2026 12minIn this episode, I answer a question about one of the most uncomfortable moments a child-centered play therapist can experience: when a child tells you to stop talking because your reflections are "annoying." I explain why these moments are often signs of therapeutic progress rather than therapist failure. As children become more vulnerable, our reflections bring subconscious emotions into conscious awareness, and that can feel threatening. I discuss why resistance can emerge in any phase of therapy, how power and control often serve as protection against vulnerability, and why we should view these reactions as the child's work—not evidence that we're causing harm. I also explore the importance of examining our own delivery of CCPT skills. While staying faithful to the model is essential, the way we communicate matters just as much. I share why reviewing your own sessions can help ensure your reflections are congruent, genuine, and grounded in unconditional acceptance. This episode is an encouragement to trust the therapeutic process, remain adherent to the model, and recognize that even when children resist our reflections, meaningful healing may be taking place. 422 | What's Wrong with Our Field?: Universities and Graduate School 03.08.2026 14minIn this episode of the What's Wrong with Our Field? series, I tackle what I believe is one of the greatest shortcomings in graduate mental health education: the lack of meaningful preparation for working with children. I share why so many counseling, social work, psychology, and marriage and family therapy programs treat children as an afterthought, expose students to modified adult interventions instead of developmentally appropriate models, or fail to address pediatric therapy altogether. The result is that new therapists often graduate feeling completely unprepared when they're assigned their first child clients. I also explain why this isn't just a training issue—it's an ethical one. As the demand for children's mental health services continues to grow, graduate programs have a responsibility to prepare clinicians to competently serve young clients. I encourage therapists to become advocates for change by engaging their universities, professors, and training programs in conversations about the need for play therapy—and specifically child-centered play therapy—to become a foundational part of graduate education. 421 | Does Birth Order Matter in CCPT? (Especially for Only Children) 30.07.2026 21minIn this episode, I answer a question about birth order and, specifically, what research and clinical experience tell us about only children. While birth order doesn't change how I practice child-centered play therapy, it does provide valuable insight into family dynamics, personality development, and the parent-child relationship. I explain why only children often develop differently from oldest, middle, and youngest siblings, how growing up primarily around adults shapes their worldview, and why understanding birth order can become a powerful tool when working with parents. I also discuss how birth order influences identity, family roles, and relationships, and why therapists can use this knowledge to help parents better understand their children without ever changing their adherence to the CCPT model. This episode explores how birth order provides context—not conclusions—and offers practical ways to support families by recognizing the unique strengths and challenges that come with each birth role. 420 | What is Wrong With Our Field? (New Series) Have We Lost Our Heart? 28.07.2026 13minIn this episode, I begin a new series exploring what I believe is wrong with the play therapy field today. I share a surprising piece of anonymous conference feedback that challenged me personally, but more importantly, raised a much deeper question: Have some play therapists lost the heart of this work? I revisit the progression from Rogers to Axline to Landreth and argue that love, empathy, genuineness, and deep respect for children have always been at the center of our model. I also challenge the growing tendency to approach play therapy as simply a job or a set of techniques rather than a deeply relational calling. I explain why feeling compassion for our clients is not a weakness, why tears don't compromise professionalism, and why maintaining a tender heart is essential to remaining faithful to the child-centered philosophy. If we lose our capacity to grieve alongside children, we risk losing the very foundation of what makes CCPT so transformative. 419 | Returning Responsibility During Regressive Play 23.07.2026 9minIn this episode, I answer a question about one of the most nuanced aspects of child-centered play therapy: knowing when to return responsibility to a child and when to step into a nurturing role during regressive play. If a child is pretending to be a baby, should I get their bottle or blanket? What if they continue asking me to do things after the role play ends? I explain why there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. Instead, the key is understanding why the child is asking. Whether the request is rooted in role play, power and control, learned helplessness, cooperation, or a genuine need for nurturance determines how I respond. I also clarify the difference between the encouragement pillar and returning responsibility, and why it's important not to confuse the two. Throughout the episode, I emphasize that CCPT is never about rigid rules—it's about understanding the child's motivation and responding in a way that protects both the therapeutic relationship and the child's growth. This conversation highlights the importance of clinical discernment and trusting the principles of the model rather than relying on automatic responses. 418 | CCPT Mythbusters: You'll Eventually Be 100% Adherent to the Model 21.07.2026 12minIn this final episode of the CCPT Mythbusters series, I tackle a myth that many child-centered play therapists quietly carry with them: the belief that if we practice long enough, we'll eventually become 100% adherent to the model. I explain why adherence isn't something that develops automatically with experience or time. Instead, it is a moment-by-moment commitment grounded in a deep understanding of why we do what we do. True mastery doesn't come from repetition alone—it comes from purposeful, intentional practice rooted in the philosophy of child-centered play therapy. I also share why even the most experienced CCPT therapists continue to make mistakes, and why that shouldn't discourage us. While fidelity to the model is essential, perfection is not the goal. The therapeutic relationship remains at the heart of the work, and our commitment to continual growth is what allows us to become increasingly faithful to the model over time. This episode is an encouragement to pursue excellence without expecting perfection, trusting that every session is another opportunity to grow as a child-centered play therapist. 417 | Expectancy, Not Expectations: The Heart of Unconditional Acceptance in CCPT 16.07.2026 14minIn this episode, I answer a question about what to do when children create artwork or craft projects during child-centered play therapy. Should they take their creations home? Should therapists keep them? And if a child spends an entire session coloring or painting, are they missing out on "more important" therapeutic work? I explain why the child's creations should never be displayed in the playroom, how to approach the child's choice to take projects home or leave them with the therapist, and why preparing parents ahead of time to respond neutrally is an important part of preserving the therapeutic process. I also address a deeper assumption hidden within the question—the idea that some ways of spending a play therapy session are better than others. Child-centered play therapy calls us to release that mindset entirely. Whether a child spends the session creating art, building, talking, sitting quietly, or doing nothing at all, I explain why every moment is therapeutically valuable when we truly trust the child, embrace expectancy rather than expectations, and remain fully committed to the CCPT model. 416 | CCPT Mythbusters: Kids Are Manipulative 14.07.2026 17minIn this episode of the CCPT Mythbusters series, I tackle one of the most common labels adults place on children: "They're just manipulative." I explain why manipulation requires cognitive planning, rational thinking, and intentional strategy—abilities that children simply don't possess developmentally. Instead, I unpack the difference between manipulation and conditioning, showing how children learn through emotional experiences and repeated interactions with the adults in their lives. When we view behavior through a child-centered lens, what appears to be manipulation is actually a child trying to meet emotional needs in the only ways they know how. I also discuss how this understanding transforms our conversations with parents. Rather than accepting the label of "manipulative," we can help caregivers recognize how patterns of reinforcement shape behavior and how CCPT interrupts those cycles by preserving relationship, maintaining healthy limits, and fostering genuine emotional growth. This episode is a reminder that when we stop judging children's behavior through an adult lens, we begin to see what they truly need—and that's where healing begins.
