What Do I Get For My Vote? 28.05.2026 1h 16minOn episode 133 of Native Land Pod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers ask: if Democrats get the majority after this year’s midterms, then what? We’ve seen Democrats win the senate, the house, and the presidency––and they still couldn’t protect the right to vote (or get an abortion) from future Republican administrations. In this midterms, what will we get for our vote? We need an agenda. Folks are saying that Texas senate candidate James Talarico has the best chance to flip a Texas senate seat blue in decades, with his opponent, Ken Paxton, covered in scandals. Our hosts are less optimistic and have some advice for Mr. Talarico… FOR YOUR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS: Some good news in the ongoing redistricting wars in South Carolina & Alabama, where proposed maps benefiting Republicans have been blocked. Meanwhile, in Florida, a new electoral map moves forward… GA State Senator Rashaun Kemp has called on Georgians to protest redistricting in Georgia at the World Cup game. STAY UPDATED by following Sen. Kemp: https://www.instagram.com/rashaunforgeorgia/?hl=en The Supreme Court has allowed coach Brian Flores to sue the NFL for discriminating against Black coaches. Mike Duggan has dropped out of the Michigan governor race. The independent candidate and former Detroit Mayor said he “got into this race to change our politics, not to be a spoiler.” Texas congressman Al Green has lost his primary race to fellow Democratic congressman Christian Menefee, after Texas’ redistricting combined his and Menefee’s districts into one. Is Integration Costing Black America Its Power? 14.05.2026 1h 15minOn episode 131 of Native Land Pod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers field a listener question about whether it's worth voting when the ballot offers no candidate who actually represents her. It’s an especially potent question in light of redistricting, the recent Supreme Court gutting of the Voting Rights Act, and the chaos of states redrawing maps in the middle of an election cycle. FOR YOUR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS: GOP Rep. Jen Kiggans laughed and said "yes, yes to that" while a radio host told Hakeem Jeffries to "get your cotton-picking hands off of Virginia." Kiggans later claimed she didn't hear the "cotton-picking" line. Jeffries is calling for her resignation. All six conservative Supreme Court justices attended Trump's state dinner honoring King Charles the night before the Louisiana voting rights decision dropped — a ruling that further guts the Voting Rights Act of 1965. A new study found that people who regularly engage with arts and culture — reading, listening to music, visiting museums — may biologically age slower. The effect may even equal regular exercise. A suit has been filed against OpenAI over ChatGPT's alleged role in the Florida State University shooting that killed two people. Trump is calling Black women reporters names when asked questions he doesn’t like. First he called Rachel Scott of ABC a “b**ch” and then he called Akayla Gardner of MS NOW a “dumb person.” How does one even respond? The Quietest Coup in American History Is Happening Right Now ft. Elie Mystal 07.05.2026 1h 30minOn episode 130 of Native Land Pod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are joined by guest Elie Mystal. Elie Mystal is an author, commentator, and the justice correspondent for The Nation. His fiery prose on the Supreme Court and legal issues writ large are unmatched, and in a seismic week for voting rights America, it’s a good time to welcome Elie home. The Supreme Court has fast-tracked their recent ruling which gutted what remained of the Voting Rights Act. They are allowing Southern states to change their electoral maps BEFORE the midterm elections, which will almost certainly dilute Black voting power. Our SCOTUS expert, Elie Mystal, weighs in. FOR YOUR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS: 1. Primary Results in Ohio and Indiana test President Trump’s influence on Republican Primaries. 2. The Detroit News caught a Michigan Senate candidate calling for intimidation at Detroit polling precincts. 3. Trump’s Medicaid cuts are becoming a reality in Nebraska, where they went into effect on May 1st. It will be the first test of how many people lose their insurance due to new work requirements. 4. Trump Praises the Confederate General, Robert E. Lee, and says that he almost won the Civil War. 5. South Carolina State University rescinded an invitation to SC’s Lt. Governor Pamela Evette to speak at graduation. In response, South Carolina Republican officials threatened to pull SCSU’s funding. 6. On Sunday, a federal judge reinstated New Orleans Court Clerk, Calvin Duncan. But then Louisiana won an appeal with the 5th US Circuit Court to keep Duncan out of office… for now. Calvin Duncan was democratically elected, winning 68% of the vote.
