  • It's Not the Workload, It's the Thought Load with Dr. Liane Davey 01.07.2026 34min
How much of your team's struggle is really about the work and how much is about everything else? In this episode, Kevin talks with Dr. Liane Davey about why the real challenge many teams face isn't simply workload, but "thought load". Liane defines this as the rising cognitive demands, emotional burdens, and depleted energy reserves that make work feel heavier than it may appear. She explains how multitasking, constant urgency, oversized meetings, unclear priorities, and poor energy habits quietly drain performance and create more rework, stress, and burnout. She also shares practical ways leaders can help, including replacing urgency with true priority, creating space for focused work, taking real breaks, managing emotions rather than ignoring them, and modeling healthier boundaries. Listen For 00:00 Introduction & today's topic: thought load vs. workload 01:38 Introducing Liane Davey, the "Teamwork Doctor" 02:48 Why Liane wrote Thought Load 04:01 The big idea: it's not workload, it's thought load 05:31 Why this problem is bigger now than ever 09:13 The myth of multitasking 11:42 Sense of urgency vs. sense of priority 13:19 Busy vs. productive vs. effective 16:34 Restoring your energy: waterfalls, wells, and cracks in the cup 20:51 Why breaks are for winners, not losers 22:30 How leaders unknowingly transfer thought load to their teams 25:16 Can AI help manage thought load? 28:46 One thing organizations can do: shrink teams, strengthen communities 31:04 What Liane is reading right now 32:06 Where to find Liane and her work 33:05 Kevin's closing challenge: now what? Liane's Story: Dr. Liane Davey is a New York Times bestselling author of You First: Inspire Your Team to Grow Up, Get Along, and Get Stuff Done, The Good Fight: Use Productive Conflict to Get Your Team and Organization Back on Track, and her latest, Thoughtload: Manage the Madness and Free Your Team to Do Great Work. She is an Organizational Psychologist, CEO advisor, and sought-after keynote speaker with more than 25 years of experience researching and advising teams on how to perform at their best. Known as the "teamwork doctor," she works with teams from the frontlines to the boardroom, across industries and around the world, from Boston to Bangkok. Through her work with hundreds of teams, including 26 Global Fortune 500 companies (and counting), she has developed a practical, research-backed approach to solving the challenges that prevent teams from working effectively together. https://lianedavey.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/liane-davey-2574911/ Looking to Develop Stronger Leaders? • What Are You Worried About? - Thoughts from Kevin 29.06.2026 5min
Americans spend an average of 138 minutes a day worrying — that's 35 days a year lost to "what if." In this episode, I share a simple three-question framework that helps you figure out which worries deserve your attention and which ones you should just let go. It's not about pretending problems don't exist. It's about spending your mental energy where it actually counts. The three questions: 1. Is it a problem? 2. Is it important? 3. Can I change or influence the outcome? If the answer to any of those is no — let it go. If the answer to all three is yes — take action. I also cover what leaders and organizations can do to reduce worry on their teams, including how communication and feedback loops can lower anxiety and uncertainty in the workplace. • Are You Stubborn or Persistent? - Thoughts from Kevin 22.06.2026 3min
Are you stubborn or persistent? At first glance, the two words seem closely related. They can describe similar behaviors and actions. But one usually feels negative, while the other feels positive. Most of us would rather be called persistent than stubborn. And as leaders, that distinction matters. In this episode, Kevin Eikenberry explains why the labels we use shape the way we see people, interact with them, and lead them. If we label someone as stubborn, we may approach them with frustration or resistance. If we label them as persistent, we may respond with more curiosity, patience, and respect. The reminder is simple but important: how you label people influences how you treat them. Take your labels seriously. In This Episode Why "stubborn" and "persistent" are similar but not the same How labels influence our expectations and interactions Why leaders should be careful about the words they use for others How choosing a different label can change your leadership approach The organizational value of assuming benign intent Remarkable Reminder How you label people influences how you treat them. • Leading Breakthrough Strategy in Volatile Times with Rebecca Homkes 17.06.2026 30min
How can leaders turn uncertainty, which can feel like fear, into an opportunity for growth? In this episode, Kevin sits down with Dr. Rebecca Homkes to explore why volatile times require a different approach to strategy. Rebecca explains that uncertainty is not automatically bad; it is simply a set of future events that may or may not occur. Leaders have a responsibility to help their teams reframe it as a chance to learn and grow faster. Kevin and Rebecca discuss why traditional strategy tools often assume too much certainty, how language and meeting rhythms can unintentionally push teams into protection mode, and why asking "has the situation changed?" is more useful than simply asking whether we are on track. They also explore the importance of moving from survival mode to reset mode, clarifying your right to win, and recognizing that a growth mandate is also a change mandate.   Listen For 00:00 Why we hit reset to thrive in uncertain times 01:46 Meet Dr. Rebecca Homkes 03:08 Why she wrote Survive, Reset, Thrive 04:52 The big idea: uncertainty is a time to grow 05:49 What strategy is — and what never changes 08:03 Why "uncertain" doesn't have to mean "bad" 11:58 Learning velocity: the #1 differentiator 14:10 Two types of uncertainty and the paralysis trap 16:20 Planning vs. preparing 19:29 The reset: a growth mandate is a change mandate 21:00 Parallel pathing: execute while you build 23:23 Where to start 24:44 Hard resets — Starbucks, Nike, Disney 26:15 What Rebecca's reading 28:03 Where to learn more and get the book 28:38 "Now what?" — the question that matters Rebecca's Story: Dr. Rebecca Homkes is the author of Survive, Reset, Thrive: Leading Breakthrough Growth Strategy in Volatile Times. She is a high-growth strategy specialist and the founder of a boutique consultancy firm, advising CEOs and executive teams focused on growth and success through uncertainty. She is a faculty member at Duke Corporate Executive Education, Lecturer at the London Business School (LBS) Executive Education, Advisor and Faculty at BCGU (Boston Consulting Group), and previous Fellow at the London School of Economics (LSE)'s Centre for Economic Performance. • Do You Know What Your Team Wants From You? 15.06.2026 4min
Last week I talked about the idea that our team members are our customers. This week, I'm taking that idea further. We spend a lot of time thinking about what we expect from our team. But expectations run both directions — do you know what your team expects from you? In this episode, I share four things that can help: thinking of your team as a customer, asking them directly what they want and need, listening without judgment, and creating a feedback loop so you can keep adjusting over time. If you don't know what your team wants and needs, how can you possibly deliver it to them? This idea is one piece of a bigger conversation I explore in my book, Flexible Leadership — about moving beyond what's comfortable so you can lead the way your team actually needs. • Leadership Mental Health with Melissa Doman 10.06.2026 30min
How can leaders support their team's mental health if they ignore their own? In this episode, Kevin talks with Melissa Doman about why leadership mental health deserves more attention. Melissa explains that leaders are often expected to shoulder more responsibility, model resilience, support employee well-being, adapt to constant change, and deliver results—without the same permission or support to care for themselves. Kevin and Melissa explore the pressure leaders face, the self-sacrifice narratives they tell themselves, and why organizations must make it clear that mental health resources are for leaders, too. They also discuss practical first steps, including reflecting on what you want to share, why, whether your workplace is safe for the conversation, and how organizations can build mental health self-management into leadership development. Melissa's Story: Melissa Doman, MA, is the author of Yes, You Can Talk About Mental Health at Work (Here's Why And How To Do It Really Well), and the new title, Cornered Office: Why We Need To Talk About Leadership Mental Health. She is an Organizational Psychologist, a former Mental Health Therapist, and Founder of The Workplace Mental Health Method™. Melissa works with companies across industries and around the globe, including clients like Google, Progressive, Estée Lauder, the MLS team - Orlando City Soccer Club, Microsoft, and Salesforce. She's spoken and mentored at SXSW and has been featured as a subject matter expert in CNN, Vogue, NPR, Fast Company, the BBC, CNBC, Inc., and LinkedIn's Top 10 Voices on Mental Health. • Stop Leading Others the Way You Want to Be Led 08.06.2026 4min
Most leaders assume they should lead others the way they would want to be led. It sounds reasonable—but it can actually limit your effectiveness. In this episode, I share a different perspective: your team members are your customers. And just like customers, they may need something different from you than what you would want yourself. If you want to become a more effective leader, it starts by understanding what your people need, adapting your approach, and creating an environment where they can do their best work. One of the most powerful things a leader can do is flex their approach to meet the needs of others. When you do that, everyone wins. This idea is at the heart of my book, Flexible Leadership: Navigate Uncertainty and Lead with Confidence. • Design Love in With Marcus Buckingham 03.06.2026 39min
How can leaders design work experiences that people don't just tolerate but truly love? Kevin talks with Marcus Buckingham about why love may be the most powerful force in business and why leaders need to take it seriously to create lasting behavior change. Marcus explains that leaders are experience makers, and the best outcomes come when employees and customers have "five" experiences, not merely good or acceptable ones. He introduces the five feelings that help create love at work: control, harmony, significance, warmth of others, and growth, showing how each helps people feel more fully themselves and more connected to the experience. Kevin and Marcus also discuss why many well-intentioned leadership efforts feel hollow when they skip the foundational feelings, how organizations can design love into everyday interactions, and why AI should support (not replace) the human elements that create trust, empathy, and connection. Marcus' Story: Marcus Buckingham is the author of Design Love in: How to Unleash the Most Powerful Force in Business. For over twenty-five years, he has been the world's leading researcher on strengths, engagement, and human performance. He began his career at Gallup and was the co-creator, with Donald O. • Four Ways AI Can (Really) Help You - Thoughts from Kevin 01.06.2026 4min
Everyone is talking about AI. Most of the conversation focuses on productivity, automation, and efficiency. But I think leaders need a broader perspective. In this episode of Remarkable TV and the Remarkable Leadership Podcast, I share four ways AI can help you as a leader that go beyond simple productivity gains. While AI can certainly help you get more done, I believe its greatest value may be in helping you think, decide, and learn more effectively. In this episode, I discuss how AI can help you: ✅ Think more clearly and creatively ✅ Make better decisions by identifying patterns and possibilities ✅ Learn faster and deepen your understanding ✅ Increase productivity and effectiveness The bigger opportunity isn't simply using AI to leverage tasks. It's using AI to leverage human potential. • How to Build Leadership Confidence (The Confidence-Competence Loop) 26.05.2026 5min
Confidence matters more in leadership than most people realize. In this episode of Remarkable TV, I'm sharing practical ways you can build confidence as a leader — not through ego or pretending, but through growth, progress, and intentional action. I'll walk you through: The confidence-competence loop Why confidence and skill reinforce each other How positive self-talk impacts leadership Why starting small matters How reflecting on progress builds momentum What organizations often miss when developing leaders One of the biggest lessons I've learned is this: confidence and competence build each other. The more progress we make, the more confidence we gain — and the more confidence we gain, the more willing we are to keep growing. A more confident leader is a more effective leader. If this episode is helpful, subscribe for more practical leadership ideas and conversations designed to help you become a more remarkable leader. • The Art of Trust Building with Dr. Dennis Reina and Dr. Michelle Reina 20.05.2026 30min
How do leaders build trust in ways that strengthen people, teams, and organizational results? In this episode, Kevin talks with Dr. Dennis Reina and Dr. Michelle Reina about why trust cannot be treated as a buzzword but must be practiced every day in the small moments. They share their three dimensions of trust—character, communication, and capability—and explain how trust grows when leaders clarify expectations, honor commitments, communicate truthfully and transparently, and recognize both the current and potential strengths of others. The discussion also highlights that trust is everyone's responsibility, even though leaders set the tone, and that organizations thrive when they intentionally connect the human need for relationships with the business need for results. • Why Micromanagement May Be Worse Than Ever - Thoughts from Kevin 18.05.2026 5min
Micromanagement has always frustrated people. But I believe today's workplace may actually be making it worse. In this episode of Remarkable TV, I explore why modern work environments are increasing the pressure leaders feel to micromanage—and what we can do instead. In this episode, I talk about: Why poor leadership preparation still matters How remote and hybrid work increase micromanagement tendencies The role of technology, dashboards, Slack, and Teams Why complexity creates control-driven leadership How declining trust impacts workplace behavior What accountability really means for leaders If you've ever felt micromanaged—or worried you might be doing it yourself—I think this conversation will help you better understand the causes and move toward healthier leadership habits. • The Path of an Inspired Leader with Bruce Mayhew 13.05.2026 32min
What if the path to inspiring others starts with understanding yourself first? Kevin sits down with Bruce Mayhew to explore why inspired leadership starts with looking inward, not for self-focus, but to serve better and lead others. They discuss the connection between learning and leadership growth, the importance of saying "I don't know" as a pathway to curiosity and trust, and why so-called soft skills are better understood as human skills. Bruce also shares a powerful distinction between motivation and inspiration, reminding us that leaders cannot manufacture motivation in others, but they can create the conditions that help people do their best work. Along the way, they unpack why accountability should be seen as an opportunity rather than blame, how leaders must balance individual needs with team cohesion, and why organizations should focus less on trying to empower people and more on enabling their success. • Is Your Open Door Policy a Problem? 11.05.2026 4min
Most leaders believe an open door policy is automatically a good thing. I'm not so sure. In this episode, I share six questions every leader should ask about their open door policy — especially in hybrid and distributed workplaces. We'll explore: • why "open door" doesn't always mean accessible • how interruptions hurt leadership effectiveness • the dependency trap many leaders accidentally create • why uninterrupted work matters for leaders too Having an open door policy is a fine idea. But the door can't always be open. What do you think? • Growth Through Innovation with Lorraine Marchand 06.05.2026 34min
What keeps organizations from getting the innovation they say they want? In this episode, Kevin talks with Lorraine Marchand about why innovation so often stalls inside teams and organizations, even when leaders claim it is a top priority. Lorraine explains that the real barrier is not a lack of ideas, but a culture that punishes failure instead of treating it as experimentation and learning. They discuss the gap between intention and action, the different types of organizational innovation mindsets, and the leadership practices that help create environments where people feel safe to contribute, test, and grow. Lorraine also shares the five principles that support sustainable innovation (culture, customer focus, chance, collaboration, and change), offering practical insight for leaders at the organization level and the individual level. • Why Your High Performers May Fail as Leaders 04.05.2026 4min
Most organizations make the same mistake: They promote their best performers into leadership roles... and expect success. But it doesn't always work. In this episode, I share why high performers often struggle when they become leaders — and what you can do about it. You'll learn: ✔ Why performance ≠ leadership readiness ✔ The mindset shift new leaders must make ✔ How organizations can better support the transition ✔ What to do when the promotion doesn't work out The transition to leadership isn't a reward — it's a completely different job. And if we don't prepare people for that shift, we set them (and their teams) up to fail. • Creating an Ownership Culture with Greg Hawks 29.04.2026 32min
What does it take to create an ownership culture when most employees don't literally own the business? In this episode, Kevin talks with Greg Hawks about the mindset shifts leaders need to make to help people act like owners by bringing more of their heart, head, and hands to work. Greg explains how his framework of owners, renters, and vandals influences behavior and why leaders must pay close attention to the environments they create. He shares how organizations unintentionally produce renters by limiting contribution, tolerating toxic behaviors, and failing to help people see the bigger picture. They also discuss why the desire for responsibility is often driven by more than money, how leaders can broaden the circle, so people think beyond their own "room" in the house, and why shaping a culture of trust, contribution, and shared perspective is one of the most important responsibilities any leader has.
