  In the 16th century, as Shah Abbas I consolidated Safavid power, a strange and bloody rebellion erupted in western Iran. Its leader? A wandering darvish named Darvish Ruhollah, who claimed to be the Mahdi and gathered thousands of followers from the mountains of Lorestan.
