Doctrine and Covenants section 87 contains a prophecy about the Civil War given almost 30 years before the actual conflict. Specifically, the revelation foretold the division of the Southern and Northern states and the subsequent conflict, including slaves rising up against their masters. The revelation was given by Joseph Smith on December 25, 1832, in response to concerns about growing international troubles and the potential dissolution of the United States.
