  • Conversation Pieces - Drake's decay and 'separating the art from the artist' 27.05.2026 41分
Separating the art from the artist is a conversation that has bubbled up a lot lately, with the release of the Michael movie, as well as recent albums from ye, JPEGMAFIA, and the focus of this episode, Drake. A lot of this discussion revolves around the validity of separating the art from the artist, and I’m here to say that the conversation around this is a psy-op. Especially for artists that demand investment in their personal lives to engage with their art to the degree of a Drake, your opinion on them as a person is a direct factor in the process of engaging with their art. The world and life of an artist, in which their art exists within, is precisely what makes art special… and unlike anything else in the world. The meta of it all is fascinating. In this episode, I’ll be exploring this dynamic through my feelings on Drake and his trifecta of new albums, primarily focusing on the main course, ICEMAN. • #218 - '89 the Brainchild INTERVIEW 13.05.2026 1時間 12分
Today’s guest, New Jersey rapper, and co-host of radio show, Strangers LIVE, '89 the Brainchild, is as distinct an artist as they come - occupying a space in rap entirely of his own making. But despite his singular style, he embraces collaboration tremendously, bringing in different voices into his take on rap that integrates influences of jersey club, electronic, pop, and more. This all creates a special concoction of music that we are blessed with on his latest album Not Who I Thought I was: the evil who brought us joy. And in this episode, we dive into the long road 89 took in creating this new album, the lessons he learnt along the way, and how he developed his eclectic sound. The Plug (1:10). • #217 - Fatboi Sharif & Child Actor breakdown 'Crayola Circles' - Album Alchemy 29.04.2026 1時間 8分
When I first heard that two leaders in the experimental rap space, in rapper Fatboi Sharif and producer Child Actor, were joining forces on an upcoming album, Crayola Circles, the stylistic fit was obvious. I knew immediately that Sharif’s unique vocal style would pair well with Child Actor’s decadent psychedelia. But what I wasn’t prepared for was just how much of a beautifully tender emotional experience this record would be. I’m truly blown away by Crayola Circles, and so I’m pumped that I was able to chat with both Fatboi Sharif and Child Actor about the recording process, Sharif’s introspective lyrical focus, Child Actor’s delicate masterpieces of production, and much more. Cannot stress enough how special this album is, so make sure you listen on to learn more about what inspired it! The Plug (1:20). The Interview (2:40). Audience response to Crayola Circles (3:55). • #216 - yaya bey INTERVIEW 15.04.2026 1時間 2分
Today’s guest, New York's yaya bey, is as talented as they come. Her unique take on R&B is propelled by a gorgeous voice, and the ability to shift to smooth effortless raps whenever she feels like it. But it’s the intangibles with her music that really make her art special to me. Throughout her entire catalogue, she carries a grounded, worldly perspective to her music that feels both intelligent and authentically her own. She possesses an innate ability to infuse so much soul, vulnerability, and emotion into her songs - she really gets me in my feels to say the least. In this episode, we discuss lessons she’s learnt about the industry so far in her music career, the public perception of her art, and the making of 2025’s do it afraid, and her brand new album, Fidelity, dropping April 17... two albums serving as companions to one and other, that are surely some of the best R&B I’ve heard in recent memory. The Plug (1:20). The Interview (2:49). yaya’s musical background (4:12). Most important lessons about the music industry (8:10). yaya’s political consciousness in her art (13:01). Key R&B inspirations (19:37). Conveying emotion in music (24:28). Finding her voice (28:09). yaya’s rap abilities (33:09). yaya’s headspace when creating do it afraid (37:43). The mission statement guiding Fidelity (46:16). Expressing ‘fidelity’ on Fidelity (49:47). The bright and lively instrumentation of Fidelity (54:18). • #215 - GAWD INTERVIEW 01.04.2026 59分
As soon as I first heard a beat from today’s guest, GAWD, off of MIKE’s Burning Desire… I was immediately intrigued. I needed to hear more of this nutty, oddball, and infinitely creative sound. So over the past few years since, I’ve dove into GAWD’s catalog as both a producer and a rapper and mined some real gold, within a stupidly prolific discography under various artistic monikers (GAWD, 65 Cent, Trick Racer, and many more). In this episode, we discuss the unique world-building in his art, his sense of humour and affinity for geese, his prolific output that has slowed in recent years, and some of his recent marquee releases in ONCE IN A PINK MOON as 65 Cent, and collaborating with the electric WiFiGawd on their latest collaborative album, Hot as Hell 3. The Plug (0:56). The Interview (2:36). GAWD’s affinity for Quasimoto dolls and geese (2:45). GAWD’s Virginia upbringing (7:32). GAWD and Iceland (10:48). World-building in GAWD’s music (14:08). GAWD’s nutty production sound (16:37). GAWD’s influence on Rage, and other high-distortion rap styles (18:58). GAWD’s loose, unstructured style of rapping (23:52). GAWD’s prolific creative output (31:33). Inspiration for the 65-track opus, ONCE IN A PINK MOON (35:51). Collaborating with WiFiGawd (43:40). The sound and vibe of Hot as Hell 3 (48:14). • #213 - Tony Bontana INTERVIEW 04.03.2026 1時間 2分
The music of today’s guest, Birmingham, England-native, Tony Bontana, can be described in many ways: But to me, the simplest way I can describe Tony is creative… in any and every sense of the word. Tony’s music spans multiple genres from rap, to punk, no wave, harnessing an artistic ethos that is truly like none other. In today’s episode, we dig deeper into his creative ethos by discussing this “splayed” sound, the aggressively experimental 2025 collaborative record with psychedelic ensemble, The Beautiful Malaise, and his brand new opus, My Name, released on February 27th. Tony Bontana is an essential voice, rising in profile with critically acclaimed works, and a killer feature on Nourished by Time’s last album. I really can’t cosign this dude enough, so make sure you listen to this episode to learn more about a true musical visionary. The Plug (0:55). The Interview (2:41). The “splayed” sound (7:17). • #211 - mary sue INTERVIEW 04.02.2026 59分
One of the best things to come out of rap’s rising global influence over the few decades is the proliferation of the art form in different cultures across the globe. Where artists can infuse their own influences into their take on the genre. Today’s guest, mary sue, is a Singapore-native who has thoroughly impressed me in recent years with a wicked degree of musical diversity, working on any kind of soundscape under the sun, with the likes of bloomcycle, pyschedelic ensemble, The Clementi Sound Appreciation Club, along with a calm lyrical delivery that is ripe with thoughtful perspective. mary sue had a big 2025, first by dropping the stellar Porcelain Shield Paper Sword, and then finishing the year off with a collaborative EP with bloomcycle. • #209 - The 6th Annual RMPP Awards 07.01.2026 39分
Around this time last year, the show was continuing to grow… but at a lesser pace than the super strong growth trajectory it had been on a few years prior. I was more than ok with this. At least the past hadn’t been a fluke. I established myself, and had some modest growth - I was grateful. But then in 2025, that big year-over-year growth came back, and I was so pleasantly surprised. I know this niche of experimentally-tinged rap is a small one, so the numbers would never reflect the impact... but 2025 taught me that this little niche may not be so little. Maybe there’s more that can be done with this platform, than I could have ever imagined. In 2026, my goal is to the accelerator and do even bigger things. That means bigger live events, bigger guests, and more collaborations with the many interesting journalists in this space that do good work. So now, without further ado... let’s talk about what music defined my 2025. Welcome to the 6th Annual RMPP Awards. • #208 - Tomorrow Kings INTERVIEW 03.12.2025 1時間 24分
If you’re a fan of the modern scene of indie rap, chances are you listen to artists that either have respect for, have collaborated with, or have been inspired directly by today’s guests, Tomorrow Kings. Ever since their inception in the mid-to late 2000s in Chicago, Tomorrow Kings - a rap supergroup comprised of SKECH185, Collasoul Structure and I.B. Fokuz of Jyroscope, Malakh El, Gilead7, and IL. Subliminal - have garnered immense acclaim and adoration for their dense, thoughtful, and forward-thinking brand of hip-hop. In 2013, as parts of Chicago’s hip-hop scene were making mainstream waves, N***** Rigged Time Machine dropped and stood out as an entirely different beast. And now, a full 12 years later, the group has returned with their follow-up album, SALT, which is, in my opinion, their strongest work yet, and one of the best albums of the year. In today’s episode, I’m joined by half of the group, SKECH185, IL. Subliminal and I.B. Fokuz, as we dive into the Tomorrow Kings sound and guiding vision, the creative process behind SALT, and the group’s lasting influence and legacy. The Plug (0:38). The Interview (2:19). • #207 - Armand Hammer breakdown 'Mercy' - Album Alchemy 19.11.2025 1時間 15分
Simply put, today’s guests have been on a run for the ages. Ever since their debut album in 2013’s Race Music, Armand Hammer, NY-based duo of E L U C I D and billy woods, have been on an absolute tear. With every passing release, their chemistry has gotten tighter, and their artistic scope has expanded. In 2021, the duo elevated to another level of critical and commercial success, teaming up with The legendary Alchemist for Haram - an album that has elevated the stock of woods and E L U C I D, with no sign of letting up. Next, they delivered the amazing We Buy Diabetic Test Strips in 2023, and incredible solo records in '24 and '25 respectively. Now in 2025, they joined forces with The Alchemist once again, with their latest album Mercy. • #206 - Mick Jenkins INTERVIEW 05.11.2025 1時間 21分
I’ve been listening to the music of today’s guest for over a decade now. I have vivid memories of telling anyone that would listen, some variation of “Mick Jenkins is the TRUTH”. Ever since I first heard The Water(s), I was sold. So it’s such a full circle moment to welcome him on the show. Mick Jenkins is an artist who’s matured both on and off the mic. On the mic, he’s chiselled away at his craft with each passing album, with recent highwater marks in 2023’s The Patience, and his brand new album with EMIL, A MURDER OF CROWS. • #205 - HUMAN ERROR CLUB INTERVIEW 29.10.2025 57分
With most artists that I have on the show, I’m more concerned with the “why” and the “what”. Why did they take their music in this emotional direction? What inspired their style? But with today’s guests, HUMAN ERROR CLUB, I found myself often asking “how”? HUMAN ERROR CLUB is a LA-based band comprised of drummer, Mekala Sessions, and two keyboardists in Diego Gaeta and Jesse Justice, who come together to create music that can be loosely described as free jazz, with elements of hip-hop infused inside of it too. They create music through improvisational methods that genuinely amaze me. In this conversation, I sought to understand what this improvisational process looks like, some of their creative touchstones, and working with Kenny Segal on their new album on Backwoodz Studioz, HUMAN ERROR CLUB AT KENNY’S HOUSE. The Plug (0:55). The Interview (2:34). HEC’s musical background (5:20). How HEC was formed (9:18). The HEC sound (13:58). HEC’s improvisational creative process (16:40). • #204 - THERAVADA INTERVIEW 08.10.2025 1時間 19分
Today’s guest, THERAVADA, has experienced a huge 2025 so far. Releasing his latest solo album, THE YEARS WE HAVE, producing half of Earl Sweatshirt’s Live Laugh Love, contributing a guest verse to Evidence’s Unlearning Vol. 2, and producing a bonus track off billy woods’ new album. You’d think, given the build-up of features and production credits that were released before his new album, that THERAVADA meticulously calculated this expertly crafted roll-out. But on the contrary, it was simply a serendipitous coincidence, made possible by years and years of dedication to his craft, a true love for the art, and a genuine desire to build authentic connections with those in the community. In this episode, we discuss the importance of hip-hop and New York on his upbringing, working with Earl on Live Laugh Love, the signature sound of THERAVADA, and the creative process behind his deeply personal new album, THE YEARS WE HAVE. Listen on to learn more about one of the best dual-threat rappers and producers in the game. Finally, for folks in Toronto, I have a special treat for you... • #202 - Gabe 'Nandez & Preservation breakdown 'Sortilège' - Album Alchemy 10.09.2025 56分
What makes a rap duo special is more than just the quality of beats and rhymes. It’s more than even the stylistic fit between the two elements. The secret sauce lies in a personal bond that extends beyond the music That’s what today’s guests, New York-based duo Gabe ‘Nandez and Preservation, have in common. With Gabe’s track record of sharp lyricism and a distinct voice, I knew that pairing him with a musical savant like Preservation would yield strong results (said producer has created masterpieces with yasiin bey, billy woods, Ka, Marci, and more). But even with that said, they completely blew me away, exceeding the lofty expectations I had for them on their new collaborative album, Sortilège. In this episode, we dive into their personal relationship, their musical chemistry, the magic of the late great Ka, myth-making through rap, and the creative process behind their stellar new record. • #201 - Sunmundi & Sasco INTERVIEW 27.08.2025 45分
How I’d describe my tastes in music would be such that, I don’t care too much about what emotion is conveyed, I just care that there IS an emotion being shared to begin with. Whether it be portrayals of depression, bliss, and everything in between, I want my music to make me feel something. On top of that, I’m partial to more intense displays of emotion, because I’m a dramatic emotional guy, what can I say? That’s why the music of today’s guests, Sunmundi and Sasco, really speaks to me, because what they created on their latest album is a wondrous achievement in putting true heartfelt passion on to wax. The young and talented New York-based duo joined the show to discuss how their relationship formed, their natural creative chemistry, and the artistic approach behind their incredible new collaborative album, Contacting. I was pleased to co-host this conversation with friend of the show, an accomplished journalist with pieces in Pitchfork, The Guardian, Bandcamp, and more. So listen on to hear about how one of 2025’s essential records was created, and why you need to have Sunmundi and Sasco firmly on your listening radar from here on out. The Plug (0:38). • #200 - $ilkMoney INTERVIEW 13.08.2025 1時間 20分
Some people are just born to be in front of a mic, blessed with such charisma, cultural intellect, and communication prowess. That immediately makes listeners hang on their every word. That’s the kind of guy who is joining us for the 200th episode of The Rap Music Plug Podcast, none other than Richmond Virginia’s own, $ilkMoney. $ilk’s commanding mic presence, impossibly malleable flow, and artistic vision has made him one of rap’s rising stars from the moment he burst on to the scene as a member of Divine Council. Now firmly in the spotlight as a solo artist, he’s given such dense rewarding work, album after album, and has outdone himself with his latest opus, WHO WATERS THE WILTED GIVING TREE. In this episode, we discuss recent comments he’s made about Tyler, the Creator and André 3000 that have caught some attention, his free-form psychedelic approach to rap, and the inspiration behind his electric and deeply thoughtful new album. Also, I’d be remiss not to share a quick thought about this milestone of 200 episodes. Because as much as I’ve run this thing as a one-man show… I did not get here alone. I wouldn’t be here without the patrons whose kind support and engagement in the RMPP community have powered me through many nights burning the midnight oil brainstorming or editing an episode. I wouldn’t be here without all the artists who trusted me to discuss their work and points of view. And I wouldn’t be here without everyone who’s ever listened to even one episode of this show. I’ve had the opportunity to have real conversations with people who I feel make some of the greatest art I’ve ever heard. It’s been an unexpected journey so far, and a legitimate dream come true. This is my baby, and I’m blessed to share their 200th day of existence with $ilkMoney, who made for one of the most entertaining episodes ever on the RMPP. I hope you enjoy. Thank you so much. The Plug (0:41). The Interview (3:09). $ilkMoney’s non-music interests (4:22). Psychedelia in $ilk’s art (38:30). $ilkMoney’s viscerally elastic flow and songwriting (44:54). How the idea of ‘the giving tree’ inspired $ilkMoney on his new album (53:31).
