  • Episode 57: The Growth Trap 20.09.2026 29min
We actually think most principals already believe this: All students can grow. The harder question is whether our schools are structured to make that belief possible. In Episode 2 of our Five Beliefs Series, Sarah and Andra talk about the tension between believing every student can grow and working inside a system that often rewards us for moving the students closest to the benchmark. Most importantly, we look at what this belief means for leadership. Because if we really believe all students can grow, that belief has to show up in our data conversations, intervention structures, schedules, expectations, and the students we choose to talk about. The goal isn't to make every student the same. It's to make sure every student keeps moving. This is Episode 2 of 5. Next up: Data Is a Compass, Not a Checkbox. Check out TPE Lead! • Episode 56: Busy Isn't Learning: What Intentional Instruction Actually Looks Like 13.09.2026 27min
What makes instruction intentional? It's not how busy the classroom looks, how engaging the activity is, or whether there's a standard written on the board. In the first episode of our Five Beliefs Series, Sarah and Andra unpack what they really mean when they say instruction has to be intentional—from putting standards over "cute," to thinking differently about Tier 1, tiering students by skill, spiraling remediation throughout the year, and making sure every class contributes to student growth. And we're talking about something just as important: what this belief means for school leaders. Because principals aren't responsible for making every classroom look the same. They're responsible for creating the conditions where teachers are thinking intentionally about the students in front of them—and can explain the why behind the instruction. This is Episode 1 of 5. • Episode 55: What Do You Believe? 09.09.2026 28min
We all have instructional beliefs. We know what we think good instruction looks like. We have opinions about data, student growth, behavior, rigor, and what teachers and students need. But have you ever actually written those beliefs down? And more importantly—do you know if your leadership team shares them? Does your staff? In this episode, we talk about the process we went through when we sat down and literally typed out our instructional beliefs. We didn't start with a framework or try to come up with five things that sounded good. We started with a simple question: What do we actually believe about teaching and learning?   Check out the demo video of TPE-Lead's newest launch here Also, check out this episode's partner sponsor Kids Discover www.kidsdiscover.com Follow us @theprincipalexchange

  • Episode 49: Pre‑August Audit: Trim the Chaos Before School Starts 26.07.2026 18min
You're carrying things that don't matter. Old initiatives. Obligatory traditions. Meetings about meetings. Programs you inherited but never believed in. In this episode, Sarah and Andra walk you through a simple four-step audit to identify what's actually essential versus what's just stealing your energy. Because July is the only month you have to simplify before August chaos normalizes everything. If you start the year with ten intentional commitments instead of twenty scattered ones, everything changes.   Audit Checklist: Step 1: List Everything You Actually Do: Dump it all, don't filter. (Observations, Staff meetings, PLC meetings, Parent events, Newsletter, Data analysis, etc.) Step 2: Sort Into 3 Buckets ESSENTIAL (Keep these): Directly impacts learning, safety, or teacher growth. IMPORTANT BUT DELEGABLE (Can someone else own it?): Matters but doesn't have to be you. ENERGY DRAINS (Consider cutting): Steals time but doesn't move the needle. Step 3: Ask the Three Questions For anything in ENERGY DRAINS, ask: "If I stopped this tomorrow, what actually happens?" "Who cares about this besides me?" "Could someone else do this?" Step 4: Cut 3-5 Things   Check out TPE Lead (now free!): tpe-lead.com Make sure you're following us: @theprincipalexchange
  • Episode 48: Get Back Your Time - 5 Strategies to Stop Reactive Leadership 19.07.2026 30min
You know deep work matters. But principals keep saying: "I can't. There's always something. The walkie never stops." In this episode, Sarah and Andra deliver five concrete, actionable strategies to actually protect that time. These aren't theory—they're systems that work in real school buildings. If you've been stuck in reaction mode and want practical ways to finally create uninterrupted time for the work that actually moves your school forward, listen in. • Episode 47: Airplane Mode for Principals: Protect Your Deep Work 12.07.2026 24min
Your day is packed with emails, walkie calls, teacher requests, and crises. By the time the building empties, you finally tackle real leadership work—observations, planning, coaching. It's 7 PM and you're exhausted. In this episode, Sarah and Andra use the phone metaphor: just like airplane mode stops notifications, principals need designated deep work time without constant disruptions. The myth? Good leaders are always available. The truth? Good leaders do the strategic work that moves schools forward—and that requires closing the door sometimes. The trap: busyness feels productive but it's not leadership. Real leadership is the deep work that prevents future problems and builds sustainability. It requires uninterrupted thinking time. This episode gives you permission to protect your deep work and shows why it's essential, not selfish. • Episode 46: Set the Culture Before It Sets Itself 05.07.2026 37min
We're on vacation and bringing back a fan favorite—especially timely as you head into the new school year. Culture isn't just morale. It's how people act when no one's watching. The tricky part? Culture happens whether you set it or not. If you don't define it intentionally, it will define itself—probably not how you want. In this episode, Sarah and Andra break down what actually moves the needle: daily interactions, consistency, and alignment between your stated values and what you actually reinforce. Culture compounds. A strong August becomes an easier November. A weak August becomes a March crisis. This conversation offers a framework for being intentional about culture before the year picks up speed. See you back live next week! Make sure you're following us: @theprincipalexchange
  • Episode 45: Break the Rules - Rethinking School Expectations 28.06.2026 42min
We're on vacation, so we're sharing one of our most downloaded episodes. School rules are everywhere. But most people can't even recite them. So what are they actually for? In this episode, Sarah and Andra challenge traditional school rules entirely. They're not calling for chaos—they're calling for a reframe. Instead of rules that beg to be broken, what if we built cultures grounded in values that actually stick? Think about it: we don't avoid murder because of a law. We avoid it because we value human life. But we drive 67 in a 60 mph zone because rules are meant to be pushed. This conversation will make you rethink discipline, culture-building, and what it means to teach kids to make good choices because they understand why. See you back live in a couple weeks! • Episode 44: The Streaming Service Problem - Principal Edition 21.06.2026 25min
Summer brings space to think—and immediately brings a different kind of overwhelm. Should you focus on behavior? Master schedule? Staff morale? Professional development? All of it feels urgent. None of it feels doable. In this episode, Sarah and Andra use the Netflix scrolling problem to explain summer planning paralysis. You have all these choices and end up making none. They break down the real traps and share a practical fix: organize everything into three columns—Keep, Fix, and Pause. Do your Keep items. Move to your Fix items. Leave Pause items alone. This simple shift is the difference between a scattered summer and a strategic one. If you're drowning in possibilities, this episode will help you find your focus. • Real Talk: Secrets of a Long‑Serving Principal with Matt Moyer 17.06.2026 34min
How does a principal stay in one building for 21 years when the average principal lasts just three? Matt Moyer, nationally distinguished principal at Rupert Elementary in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, has beaten the odds. He's been principal for over two decades—at the very school he attended as a child. In this Real Talk episode, Sarah and Andra ask Matt what keeps him there. Spoiler: it's not money. Matt's had plenty of opportunities to leave for more. What kept him was purpose—and the people. Matt speaks about mission-driven leadership, building relationships across generations, and his hiring philosophy: hire for character, train for skill. He shares real examples—like teachers quietly paying for students' trip insurance out of their own pockets. That's the culture he's built. For principals feeling burned out or wondering if they can actually build a sustainable team, Matt's story offers clarity: the people matter. The mission matters. Align those two things, and you can build something that lasts. Check out Matt’s website: https://sites.google.com/view/from-the-principals-office-mat/social-media-pages Facebook | Instagram
  • Episode 43: Credentialed Yet Unprepared - Today's Principal Reality 14.06.2026 34min
You have the credential but feel completely unprepared. This is the reality for many principals—and the statistics show why. In this episode, Sarah and Andra tackle the crisis in principal retention: 42% are considering leaving, 64% cite administrative burden as the reason, and 86% report daily stress. The real problem? The job isn't set up for principals to actually lead. This conversation explores what needs to change to support principals so they can succeed, not just survive. Link to the policy brief. • Episode 42: Stop Playing the School Hero: Lead Without Burning Out 07.06.2026 34min
When principals step into leadership, it often starts with the best intentions. You want to help. You want to support your staff. You want to solve problems, remove obstacles, and make life easier for the people around you. But over time, that desire to help can quietly turn into something else—the belief that you have to be the one who fixes everything. In this episode, we explore the hidden cost of "hero leadership" and why constantly rescuing, solving, and stepping in can actually weaken systems, limit leadership growth in others, and leave principals carrying more than they were ever meant to carry. From building leadership capacity to creating systems that work without you, this conversation reframes what strong leadership really looks like. Because great principals don't build schools that constantly need saving—they build schools that can thrive because leadership is shared.   Read our policy brief: Credentialed and Unprepared   Check out TPE-Lead at tpe-lead.com Follow us on all socials @theprincipalexchange
  • Real Talk: Supporting Special Education Teachers with Brandie Rosen 03.06.2026 46min
Special education teachers are often some of the most dedicated people in a school—but they’re also carrying responsibilities that many others never fully see. In this episode, Sarah and Andra sit down with Brandie Rosen to talk about what special education teachers really need from school leaders. From overwhelming caseloads and competing responsibilities to creating systems that help teachers feel supported instead of isolated, this conversation shines a light on a group of educators who are often asked to do an incredible amount with limited time and resources. The conversation also explores how principals can build stronger cultures around shared responsibility, ensuring that special education students are seen as all of our students and not just the responsibility of one department. Because retaining great teachers isn't just about hiring them—it's about creating the conditions that help them stay. If you're looking for practical ways to better support your special education staff while strengthening your overall school culture, this episode will give you plenty to think about.   🎤 Brandie will also be presenting at Built Different, where she'll share a practical framework for supporting and retaining special education teachers through intentional leadership structures and collaborative systems. • Episode: 41 Be the Thermostat - Leading Calm in Chaotic Schools 31.05.2026 31min
When schools feel stressful, chaotic, or emotionally heavy, principals often absorb that pressure without even realizing it. In this episode, we explore the difference between thermometer leadership and thermostat leadership — and how the emotional energy principals bring into a building shapes the culture around them. From reacting to stress and urgency to creating steadiness and clarity during difficult seasons, this conversation reframes leadership as more than managing problems. It’s about helping regulate the environment around you. Because staff often respond to a leader’s emotional pace more than their words. If your school feels especially heavy, reactive, or overwhelmed right now, this episode will help you think differently about the emotional tone you bring into meetings, conversations, classrooms, and hard moments.   Make sure you follow us on social media @theprincipalexchange  Try out TPE-Lead free here!
  • Real Talk: From Reactive to Intentional with Dr. Ruthie Walker 27.05.2026 25min
For many principals, leadership can start to feel like survival mode. You’re solving problems, putting out fires, answering questions, and just trying to make it to Friday—while the bigger vision for your school keeps getting pushed further down the list. In this episode, Sarah and Andra sit down with Dr. Ruthie Walker to talk about the difference between reactive leadership and intentional leadership. From building systems from the ground up to creating long-term structures that reduce stress and increase clarity, this conversation explores what happens when principals stop leading one day at a time and start thinking more strategically about the year ahead. Because leadership becomes much harder when everything feels urgent all the time. If you’ve ever felt stuck in constant reaction mode or like your school year is running you instead of the other way around, this episode will help you think differently about planning, priorities, and leading with intention. Dr. Ruthie Walker will also be leading a Build With Me session at our Built Different summer conference focused on creating a multi-year leadership calendar principals can actually use.
