  • Is Ajijic, Mexico Retirement Hot for Gay Folks? | Queer Money 660 22.09.2026 9min
Is Ajijic retirement hot?Puerto Vallarta gets most of the attention when gay men talk about retiring in Mexico. But what if the perfect gay vacation destination isn't the perfect gay retirement destination? We're currently in Ajijic, Mexico, extending our Mexican residency from one year to three years and seriously considering spending the first four months of our move to Mexico right here.So we're asking:Is Ajijic retirement hot?In this episode of Queer Money®, we're sharing 5 reasons Ajijic has become one of the most interesting retirement destinations in Mexico for us, plus 3 reasons it might make you say absolutely not.And we're doing it from Ajijic based on what we're actually experiencing.🌈 Why Ajijic has our attention:🏳️‍🌈 It's surprisingly gay. Ajijic has an active LGBTQ+ community that feels less focused on nightlife and more focused on building friendships and community. It's an easy soft landing in Mexico. A large immigrant community, English-speaking services and established infrastructure can make moving abroad considerably easier.🏥 Healthcare is accessible. Ajijic has local hospitals, specialists, labs and dental care, with even more options available nearby and in Guadalajara.💰 Our money goes further. Ajijic isn't bargain-basement cheap anymore, but compared with many places in the U.S., everyday expenses can still feel considerably more reasonable.🌴 It's retirement hot, not necessarily vacation hot. Puerto Vallarta may win for beaches, nightlife and vacation energy. Ajijic may win for community, everyday living and building an actual life. But Ajijic isn't retirement paradise for everyone. Those charming cobblestone streets can become a serious mobility issue. The large immigrant population can make it easy to stay inside an English-speaking bubble. And traffic on the Carretera may test your retirement zen.So would we retire here permanently? We're currently about a 7 out of 10.But we're also planning to spend the first four months of our move to Mexico here, which probably says more than the score.Because the real test of a retirement destination isn't:“Did I have a fabulous vacation there?”It's:“Could I actually enjoy Tuesday there?”If you're considering retiring or moving abroad, get the Queer Money Retire Abroad Planner & Calculator here. • 5 Best Gay Countries for Slow Travel in Retirement | Queer Money Ep. 659 15.09.2026 20min
Where should you actually retire abroad? Maybe you should stop vacationing there first.Seven days of hotels, restaurants, sightseeing and cocktails tells you whether you like a vacation destination. It doesn't tell you whether you'd enjoy buying groceries, finding a doctor, navigating public transportation and doing absolutely nothing on a Saturday there. And it definitely doesn't tell you what it feels like to live there as a gay person when Pride isn't happening. In this episode of Queer Money®, we're ranking the 5 best gay-friendly countries for slow travel, especially for Americans who may secretly be test-driving their future retirement. We started with more than 40 countries recommended by experienced slow travelers and put them through the Queer Money Slow Travel Test: LGBTQ+ friendliness, staying power, ease of everyday life, healthcare access and the ability to experience multiple potential retirement lifestyles. And our #2 country surprised even us.🌈 The Top 5:🇦🇷 #5 Argentina – Buenos Aires gives you world-class city life, while Mendoza, Córdoba and Patagonia let you test completely different retirement lifestyles.🇧🇷 #4 Brazil – Rio, São Paulo and Florianópolis offer incredible variety, with visitor stays potentially reaching 180 days and retirement residency options for qualifying retirees.🇹🇭 #3 Thailand – Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the southern beaches combine affordability, healthcare, infrastructure and a huge international community.🇨🇱 #2 Chile – The surprise of the list. From Santiago to wine country, beaches and Patagonia, Chile offers enormous variety plus surprisingly strong LGBTQ+ protections.🇪🇸 #1 Spain – Madrid, Valencia, Málaga, Gran Canaria, northern Spain and, yes, Sitges. World-class transportation, healthcare, LGBTQ+ acceptance and dramatically different lifestyles make Spain our best country for slow-traveling your way toward retirement.💡 Takeaways from this episode:🏳️‍🌈 Why LGBTQ+ laws AND public acceptance matter when test-driving a retirement destination🛂 How long Americans can potentially stay in each country before pursuing residency🏥 Why healthcare access needs to be part of your test drive💰 Why your vacation budget isn't your retirement budget🌎 Why staying somewhere during its less-fabulous season can tell you more than visiting during perfect weather🏠 Why you should rent in a real neighborhood instead of living in a hotelBefore choosing your retirement destination:Stay at least one month. Live where residents actually live. Track what normal life costs. Then ask yourself:Would I still love this place if I weren't on vacation? If the answer is yes, make the next step easier with the Queer Money Retire Abroad Planner & Calculator.Retire by design, not by default.🏳️‍🌈 How We Help the Queer Money CommunityFree Guides📊 10 Vital Retirement Numbers🌎 Retire Abroad ChecklistCalculators & Planners🏳️‍🌈 Queer Money Retirement Calculator✈️ Queer Money Retire Abroad Planner & Calculator📈 Retirement Readiness ReviewMentioned in this episode:Optimize August Ad 2With political uncertainty growing in the U.S., now is the time to build your Plan B. • 7 Ways to Be a Bad Expat | Queer Money Ep. 658 08.09.2026 8min
Why moving abroad doesn't automatically make you worldly. You can move abroad, lower your cost of living, enjoy better weather and healthcare, and still be a terrible expat.Because moving abroad doesn't automatically make you worldly.Sometimes it just makes you an American with a cheaper margarita. 🍹As we prepare for our own move to Mexico, we're thinking more about something that doesn't get nearly enough attention in the retire-abroad conversation:Retiring abroad isn't just about what another country can do for you. It's also about how you show up once you get there. In this episode of Queer Money®, we're counting down seven behaviors that can turn otherwise well-intentioned Americans into bad expats, from refusing to learn the local language to surrounding yourself entirely with other Americans to expecting your new country to operate exactly like the United States. And yes, we're checking ourselves against this list, too.🌈 Takeaways from this episode:👋 Why something as simple as greeting people in their language mattersHow moving abroad without ever leaving your American bubble defeats much of the purpose🏘️ Why living behind the gates can prevent you from ever actually becoming part of your community🗣️ Why you don't need to become fluent, but refusing to learn the language isn't cute💰 Why supporting local businesses should be part of enjoying your new country's lower cost of living🌎 Why cultural differences aren't problems that need American solutions💸 And our potentially controversial #1: wanting all the benefits of your new country without accepting any responsibility for supporting itAll seven mistakes come down to one bigger problem:Bad expats treat another country like a product. What's the price? What's the visa? What's the weather? What's in it for me?Good immigrants start asking different questions:How do I belong here? How do I participate? How do I understand the culture? And what can I contribute? We're becoming immigrants ourselves, and we're absolutely going to screw some of this up.The goal isn't perfection. It's participation.🏳️‍🌈 How We Help the Queer Money CommunityFree Guides📊 10 Vital Retirement Numbers🌎 Retire Abroad ChecklistCalculators & Planners🏳️‍🌈 Queer Money Retirement Calculator✈️ Queer Money Retire Abroad Planner & Calculator📈 Retirement Readiness ReviewMentioned in this episode:Optimize August Ad 2With political uncertainty growing in the U.S., now is the time to build your Plan B. • You Have Enough Money to Retire. So Why Won't You? | Queer Money Ep. 657 01.09.2026 13min
Why Haven't You Retired Already? We keep doing retirement reviews with gay men who have more than enough money to retire... yet they won't.One couple we recently worked with is on track to have nearly $3 million in just a few years. Our biggest takeaway for them wasn't, "You need to save more."It was:You're working too hard and too much and playing too little. So if the math says you can retire, why does your brain keep saying you can't?In this episode of Queer Money®, we're challenging some of the biggest ideas the financial industry has sold us about retirement: that retirement is a number, that you'll never have enough and that retirement shouldn't start until 65.Because after decades of saving, investing and building financial security, some gay men discover an unexpected problem:They've learned how to accumulate wealth, but they haven't learned how to use it to create freedom.🌈 Takeaways from this episode:💰 Why your paycheck can feel safer than your portfolio, even when the retirement math works🧠 How being a "good saver" can become so intertwined with your identity that spending your retirement savings feels irresponsible📉 Why learning how to decumulate money can be just as important as learning how to accumulate it✈️ Why your go-go years may be the time to intentionally spend MORE, not less⚠️ Why trying to create a completely risk-free retirement could create an even bigger risk: waiting too long to enjoy it🏳️‍🌈 How to determine whether you actually have "enough" without relying on a magical $1 million, $2 million or $5 million retirement number💵 How creating a retirement paycheck can make leaving your career feel less terrifying📋 Why you should create your bad-news plan before the market drops, healthcare costs rise or life throws you another surpriseHere's the uncomfortable truth:You can always make more money. You can't make yourself 55 again.Retirement confidence doesn't come from eliminating every possible risk. It comes from knowing what you'll do when something changes. And at some point, if your assets are growing, your spending is manageable, you have future income and your plan can survive imperfect markets, continuing to work becomes a choice rather than a financial requirement. If you've saved a lot of money but still can't confidently answer, "Can I retire?", that's exactly what our Queer Money Retirement Readiness Reviews are designed to help you figure out.Schedule your Queer Money Retirement Readiness ReviewRetire by design, not by default.🏳️‍🌈 How We Help the Queer Money CommunityFree Guides📊 10 Vital Retirement Numbers🌎 Retire Abroad ChecklistCalculators & Planners🏳️‍🌈 Queer Money Retirement Calculator✈️ Queer Money Retire Abroad Planner & Calculator📈 Retirement Readiness ReviewMentioned in this episode:It's time to create your retirement abroad planWhat if your retirement plan included a backup plan outside the United States? • Why We're Moving €500,000 of Our Retirement Investments to Portugal | Queer Money Ep. 656 25.08.2026 14min
We're moving €500,000 of our retirement investments out of the United States and into Portugal.Yes, the investment can potentially qualify us for Portugal's Golden Visa. But here's the part that may surprise you:If Portugal eliminated the Golden Visa tomorrow, we'd still make the investment. Why?Because we're increasingly uncomfortable having so much of our financial future tied to one country, one currency and one economy. In this episode of Queer Money®, we're getting personal about our own retirement portfolio and the three reasons we're investing in the Optimize Portugal Golden Opportunities Fund, plus the one reason we absolutely wouldn't.Portugal's market returned approximately 37% in 2025 versus roughly 17% for the U.S. market, and through the period discussed in this episode, Portugal continued to outperform the U.S. The fund we're investing in returned 25.1% in 2025 and reported a 13.6% annualized return since its 2021 inception.Of course, past performance doesn't guarantee future returns. But performance is only part of our decision.💡 Takeaways from this episode:Why we believe the investment needs to make sense even without the Golden Visa📈 What we're actually buying inside the Optimize Portugal Golden Opportunities Fund💶 Why another country, currency and economy can provide diversification to our heavily U.S.-focused portfolio🌎 Why we're paying attention as some global pensions, institutions and central banks reconsider their exposure to U.S. assets🏳️‍🌈 How a qualifying €500,000 investment may provide another path toward living in Europe through Portugal's Golden Visa💰 The math behind how €500,000 earning the fund's historical 13.6% annualized return would equal approximately €68,000 per year before taxes⚠️ The risks of concentrating money in a relatively small foreign market🚫 And the one reason we wouldn't make this investment: We would never invest €500,000 simply to get a visa if we thought the underlying investment sucked. We're not abandoning America. We're trying to stop making America our only financial plan. For us, wealth is increasingly less about accumulating more stuff and more about accumulating choices, options and freedom.Optimize Investment Partners sponsors Queer Money®, and we're personally investing in the Portugal Golden Opportunities Fund strategy discussed in this episode. This episode is for financial education only and isn't investment advice. International investing involves risk, including market, concentration and currency risk, as well as additional tax and reporting considerations. Past performance isn't indicative of future results.Want to learn more about the Optimize Portugal strategy, its holdings, performance, risks and the €500,000 Golden Visa route? If you're curiouse about Optimize Investment Partners to request more information directly from their team here: https://bit.ly/PGOF-2And if you're considering retiring or moving abroad, download our FREE Queer Money Retire Abroad Checklist below.HOW WE HELP FOLKS IN THE QUEER MONEY COMMUNITYFree guidesQueer Money Kickstarter:Queer Money 10 Vital Retirement NumbersQueer Money Retire Abroad ChecklistCalculators, planners and servicesQueer Money Beginner’s GuideQueer Money Retirement CalculatorQueer Money Retire Abroad Planner & CalculatorQueer Money Retirement Readiness ReviewMentioned in this episode:Optimize August Ad 2With political uncertainty growing in the U.S., now is the time to build your Plan B. • Can You Retire Abroad on Social Security Alone? | Queer Money Ep. 655 18.08.2026 15min
Could you actually retire abroad on one Social Security check? The average retired American worker receives about $2,081 a month from Social Security. In many U.S. cities, that may barely cover the basics. But take that same check abroad and suddenly the retirement math can look dramatically different. The catch? Cheap doesn’t automatically mean retire-able.A city might have $300 rent, fabulous food and gorgeous weather, but if you can’t qualify for legal residency, access quality healthcare or comfortably live there as an LGBTQ+ person, you haven’t found a retirement destination. You’ve found a vacation. In this episode of Queer Money®, we rank five gay-friendly cities where an average Social Security benefit could potentially support a modest retirement, while also considering LGBTQ+ acceptance and whether there’s a realistic path to legal residency. Our countdown takes us from Medellín, Colombia, to Coimbra, Portugal, Montevideo, Uruguay, Cuenca, Ecuador, and finally, Chiang Mai, Thailand. And some of the numbers may have you checking airfare before the episode is over.🌈 Takeaways from this episode:💰 Why $2,081 a month may go considerably further abroad than it does in the U.S.🏳️‍🌈 Why affordability alone isn't enough when choosing where to retire as a gay person🌎 Five cities that combine lower costs, LGBTQ+ friendliness and retirement practicalityWhy Medellín offers strong healthcare and affordability, but has a noticeable gap between LGBTQ+ legal protections and public acceptanceHow Coimbra can offer Portugal's LGBTQ+ protections and residency opportunities for considerably less than Lisbon or PortoWhy Montevideo may offer the strongest queer confidence on our listWhy Cuenca combines exceptionally low costs with an established expat retirement communityHow Chiang Mai could potentially leave someone living on average Social Security with $700 to nearly $1,000 left each monthBut Social Security alone doesn't mean Social Security without a backup plan. You'll still need to plan for visas, healthcare, flights home, currency fluctuations, emergencies, taxes and the occasional fabulous decision that somehow didn't make it into the budget. We also share the three steps to take before retiring abroad on Social Security, including calculating your real Social Security income, putting every destination through our Three-Gate Test and test-driving your potential new home for 30 to 90 days.Ready to start exploring? • Can a Gay Couple Early Retire with $1.2 Million? | Queer Money Ep. 654 11.08.2026 19min
Is $1.2 Million Enough to Retire Early as a Gay Couple?Joe and Bob are both 55. They have $1.2 million saved and invested for retirement, no debt and dreams of spending their go-go years slow traveling around the world. So, can they quit their jobs and retire today? The answer is… probably. But there’s a catch. In this episode of Queer Money®, we put this fictional gay couple through three retirement tests to see whether $1.2 million is actually enough to retire at 55. And what we find shows exactly why your retirement number alone doesn’t tell you whether you’re financially independent.Joe and Bob want to spend about $60,000 a year, have $120,000 available in cash and taxable investments and expect about $48,000 a year from Social Security beginning at 70.At that spending level, our Queer Money Retirement Calculator projects they could reach age 100 with approximately $557,000 remaining. But bump their lifestyle up just $1,000 a month to $72,000 a year?Their money could be gone in their early 80s.Same $1.2 million. Very different retirement.💡 Takeaways from this episode:🏳️‍🌈 Why $1.2 million could be enough for Joe and Bob to retire at 55💰 Why your annual spending may matter more than your net worth🌉 How to build an income bridge from early retirement to age 59½, Medicare at 65 and Social Security at 70📈 Why Joe and Bob need a strategy for accessing retirement accounts, Roth conversions and healthcare before quitting⚠️ How lifestyle creep from $60,000 to $66,000 to $72,000 dramatically changes their retirement projections📉 How to create rules now for surviving a 20% market decline without making panic decisionsFor Joe and Bob, $60,000 is the target, $63,000 is the caution line and $66,000 is the ceiling.Their retirement isn't possible because they hit some magical millionaire number. It's possible because their assets, spending, accessible money, future income and desired lifestyle actually work together. If you have money saved but still can't answer the question, “Can I actually retire?”, that's exactly what we help people figure out during a Queer Money Retirement Readiness Review.HOW WE HELP FOLKS IN THE QUEER MONEY COMMUNITYFree guidesQueer Money Kickstarter:Queer Money 10 Vital Retirement NumbersQueer Money Retire Abroad ChecklistCalculators, planners and servicesQueer Money Beginner’s GuideQueer Money Retirement CalculatorQueer Money Retire Abroad Planner & CalculatorQueer Money Retirement Readiness ReviewMentioned in this episode:It's time to create your retirement abroad planWhat if your retirement plan included a backup plan outside the United States? • You’ll Be Fired Before You’re Retired | Queer Money Ep. 653 04.08.2026 14min
You may be planning to retire at 65. Your employer may have a different date in mind.We are taught to build retirement around one major assumption: keep working until we are financially ready to stop. But what happens when the system does not let you?A restructuring happens. Your projects disappear. The raises stop. Your decades of experience suddenly become a “performance issue.” You are told the company needs someone more nimble, more digital, more affordable or, let’s be honest, younger. In this episode of Queer Money, we are talking about the very real possibility of being pushed out of work before you are ready to retire.Nearly one in four workers over 50 reportedly feels like they are being pushed out because of their age. Other research has found that more than half of older workers leave longtime jobs involuntarily. And losing your job at 52, 56 or 61 is nothing like losing it at 28.For LGBTQ+ people, the consequences can be especially difficult. Many of us do not have family support to fall back on. We may have moved to expensive cities to feel safe, spent more on education to build our careers or felt pressure to maintain a lifestyle that looked more secure than it actually was.So when someone tells you to “just work longer,” you need to ask: Will they let you?In this episode, we share personal stories of unexpected layoffs, explain how corporate ageism is often disguised and lay out practical ways to start taking back control of your retirement timeline. You’ll learn:The subtle signs that you may be getting managed outWhy experience can look expensive to corporate AmericaHow to calculate how long your money would last without a paycheckWays to build an income bridge before retirementHow to turn decades of experience into consulting or fractional workWhy keeping your skills and professional network current mattersWhat to document when you suspect age discriminationWhy you should never panic-quit or rush to sign a severance agreementYour employer may control your paycheck, but they should not control your entire future. The first step in age-proofing your retirement is knowing where you actually stand. Schedule a Queer Money Retirement Readiness Review to understand your numbers, identify your options and start building a retirement plan that does not depend entirely on your employer loving you tomorrow.Retire by design, not by default, layoff or ageism.HOW WE HELP FOLKS IN THE QUEER MONEY COMMUNITYFree guidesQueer Money Kickstarter:Queer Money 10 Vital Retirement NumbersQueer Money Retire Abroad ChecklistCalculators, planners and servicesQueer Money Beginner’s GuideQueer Money Retirement CalculatorQueer Money Retire Abroad Planner & CalculatorQueer Money Retirement Readiness ReviewMentioned in this episode:Optimize August Ad 2With political uncertainty growing in the U.S., now is the time to build your Plan B. • Can Moving Abroad Help You Reach Financial Independence Faster? | Queer Money Ep. 652 28.07.2026 16min
Can moving abroad help you reach financial independence faster?Yes. Not automatically. Not magically. Not because every country outside the United States is cheap, easy, safe, gay-friendly, and waiting for American retirees with cocktails. But yes, moving abroad can change the math.If your life costs $7,000 a month in the United States, your financial independence number is one thing. If your life costs $3,500 a month abroad, that is a completely different ballgame. In this episode of Queer Money, we’re talking about how moving abroad or retiring abroad can help gay men reach financial independence sooner or more easily. The basic FI formula is simple: spend less than you make, invest the difference, and build enough assets to support your life. But most people focus only on income and investing. They forget the third lever: how much your life actually costs. That’s where retiring abroad, moving abroad, or using geographic arbitrage can become powerful. For many gay men, financial independence is not just about earning more or investing harder. It may also be about designing a life where your housing, healthcare, transportation, insurance, taxes, and everyday expenses are dramatically lower, without lowering your quality of life.Takeaways from this episode:How moving abroad can lower your financial independence numberWhy cost of living may be one of the biggest barriers to reaching FIHow geographic arbitrage can help gay men retire earlier or reach financial independence fasterWhy lowering expenses from $80,000 a year to $40,000 a year can dramatically change your FI mathThe difference between retiring abroad after reaching FI and moving abroad to reach FI soonerWhy earning remotely, freelancing, consulting, teaching, or building a global business may support the move-abroad strategyWhy tourist spending is not the same as actually living abroadHow housing, healthcare, transportation, insurance, taxes, and currency risk can affect your planWhy visas, work rules, taxes, healthcare, and community must be researched before movingWhy moving abroad is not escape, but life designWhy gay men should retire by design, not by defaultMoving abroad can help you reach financial independence faster if the numbers, lifestyle, visa, taxes, healthcare, and community all work together. If this episode has you wondering whether moving abroad or retiring abroad could help you reach your financial independence number sooner, grab the Queer Money Retire Abroad Planner and CalculatorRetire by design, not by default. How We Help Folks in the Queer Money CommunityFree guides:Queer Money KickstarterQueer Money 10 Vital Retirement NumbersQueer Money Retire Abroad ChecklistCalculators and Planners:Queer Money Beginner's GuideQueer Money Retirement CalculatorQueer Money Retire Abroad Planner & CalculatorMentioned in this episode:Optimize August Ad 2With political uncertainty growing in the U.S., now is the time to build your Plan B. • Why Wages Haven’t Kept Up With Inflation | Queer Money Ep. 651 21.07.2026 26min
You’re Not Bad With Money. Your Paycheck Is Broken. Why does the economy look strong on paper while so many Americans feel financially exhausted? In this episode of Queer Money®, we’re talking about the real reason people feel broke, why wages haven’t kept up with inflation, and why this matters so much for gay men over 40 who are trying to save, invest, retire early, retire abroad, or simply stop feeling like money is always one emergency away from falling apart.Yes, some parts of the economy are doing well. Consumers are spending. Corporations are profitable. The stock market has had major runs. But for everyday workers, especially those relying mostly on a paycheck, life feels harder because wages are not keeping up with rising costs.Inflation, groceries, gas, healthcare, rent, insurance, debt, and everyday expenses are eating up more of our income. Even when wages rise, those dollars are buying less. That gap is one of the biggest reasons people are using credit cards to cover necessities and why so many Americans feel broke even when they’re working hard. But this is not just a 2026 inflation problem. It is a decades-long wage problem.Since the 1970s, productivity has grown dramatically, corporate profits have climbed, CEO pay has exploded, stock buybacks and dividends have rewarded shareholders, and workers have received a much smaller share of the value they helped create. The economy increasingly rewards people who own assets, not people who rely only on labor. For LGBTQ+ people, this matters because many of us are already playing catch-up with retirement savings, homeownership, family support, healthcare costs, and financial security. If your paycheck is your only wealth-building tool, and that paycheck keeps falling behind, retirement planning becomes harder. In this episode, you’ll learn:Why people feel broke even when the economy looks strongWhy wages haven’t kept up with inflation and rising costsHow corporate profits, CEO pay, and shareholder rewards changed the economyWhy relying only on a paycheck can limit retirement securityWhy gay men over 40 need to think beyond budgeting harderHow owning assets can create more options and financial powerWhat to do when the system rewards ownership more than workThe problem is not that you bought too many lattes. The problem is an economy that has rewarded capital over labor for decades.Your next move? Learn the game, protect yourself, acquire assets where you can, and build enough options that the economy has less control over you.Until next time, retire by design, not by default. • How Gay Men Successfully Retire Early | Queer Money Ep. 647 23.06.2026 29min
Can gay men successfully retire early? A lot of gay men tell us the same thing:“I want to retire early.”Or, let’s be honest, “I want to retire yesterday.”But then comes the panic: “I don’t know if I have enough.” “I don’t know how much money I actually need.” “I don’t know how to get from here to there.”And this is where most retirement advice makes everything worse. It tells you to chase one giant magic number: $2 million, $3 million, $4 million, or whatever number makes you want to close your laptop, pour a cocktail, and think about it later. But early retirement usually isn’t about one giant number. It’s about having the right money in the right places at the right time.In this episode of Queer Money, we’re talking about how gay men successfully retire early by using five tactics that can speed up your retirement timeline, reduce panic, and help you design a retirement that actually fits your life.Because for gay men, retirement planning is not just about money. It’s also about time, health, freedom, safety, location, relationships, and whether you really want to keep working under fluorescent lighting until Medicare shows up.Takeaways from this episode:Why chasing one giant retirement number can sabotage early retirement planningHow to calculate your gap number and your bridge numberWhy early retirement is about income sequencing, not just accumulationHow to build an income bridge before you leave workWhy taxable brokerage accounts, Rule of 55, 72(t), Roth conversions, and cash may all matterHow early retirement can create a powerful tax-planning windowWhy your health should be treated as a financial assetWhy working “just a few more years” is not always freeHow to stress test your retirement plan before you leave workWhy gay men may need to design retirement more intentionally than the traditional advice suggestsThe bigger truth? Early retirement is not always about having more money. Sometimes it’s about making better decisions with the money you already have.If you want help understanding your numbers, your timeline, and your next steps, schedule a Queer Money Retirement Readiness Review at the link in the show notes. We’ll help you look at where you are, what you have, what you want, and what steps may help you retire early, retire abroad, or simply retire better.Stay fabulous, not fabulously broke.Mentioned in this episode:It's time to create your retirement abroad planWhat if your retirement plan included a backup plan outside the United States? • 3 Retirement Plans That Sabotage Gay Men | Queer Money Ep. 645 09.06.2026 17min
Why Have So Many Gay Men Struggled to Save for Retirement? We hear this from gay men all the time, usually those in their 50s or pushing their 60s:“I want to retire now, but I have absolutely nothing saved.”And when we ask what happened, the answer usually isn’t laziness. It isn’t that they didn’t care. It often comes down to three quiet beliefs many gay men inherited from culture, trauma, fantasy, and avoidance. In this episode of Queer Money, we’re talking about the three retirement plans that sabotage gay men and keep too many of us from saving, investing, and building the future we actually want. These are some of the biggest gay retirement mistakes we see:“I’ll die young and beautiful.”“I’ll marry a sugar daddy.”“I’ll figure it out later.”For many gay men, especially those who came of age during the HIV/AIDS crisis, the idea of growing old, happy, healthy, loved, financially stable, and free wasn’t something we were encouraged to imagine. Some of us didn’t believe we’d live long enough. Some of us hoped someone else would save us. And some of us assumed we’d eventually get serious about money later. But later showed up, and now she wants receipts. This episode is not about shame. Shame is not a retirement plan either. This is about naming the myths that may have helped us survive emotionally, but are now sabotaging our older gay selves financially.Takeaways from this episode:Why many gay men struggle to picture themselves as older, secure, and financially freeHow the “I’ll die young” myth became one of the most damaging gay retirement mistakesWhy waiting for a partner, husband, or sugar daddy to fund your retirement is not a planHow “I’ll figure it out later” quietly sabotages retirement savings and investingWhy time in the market matters more than waiting until you “have more money”How old survival beliefs can turn into financial avoidanceWhy gay retirement planning is really about creating options, dignity, freedom, and joyHow asset acquisition and cash-flow building can help gay men retire betterIf this hits a little close to home and you’re ready to finally have the retirement conversation, schedule a Retirement Readiness Review with us at the link in the show notes. We’ll help you look at where you are, where you want to go, and what steps you can take to retire early, retire abroad, or simply retire better.Chapters:00:00 - Intro01:41 - Starting convo02:42 - Myth 105:52 - Myth 207:56 - Myth 311:41 - Self Reflection13:04 - Reframing 15:37 - The Fix16:33 - OutroMentioned in this episode:Optimize August Ad 2With political uncertainty growing in the U.S., now is the time to build your Plan B. • The 5 Building Blocks of a Happy Gay Life | Queer Money Ep. 643 26.05.2026 9min
Can gay folks truly be happy? What if the reason life still feels a little off isn’t because you need a better life, but because you’re living from a script that was never really yours? In this episode of Queer Money®, we’re talking about the 5 Building Blocks of a Happy Gay Life and why so many gay men reach their 40s, 50s, and beyond with careers, relationships, money, and success that look good from the outside, but still don’t feel aligned on the inside. For many gay men, especially those of us over 40, life was shaped by survival before it was shaped by choice. Family expectations, religion, culture, school, work, and even gay culture handed us rules about who to be, how to look, what to want, how to spend, how to age, and what “success” should look like.So we adapted. We performed. We chased approval. We built fabulous-looking lives that didn’t always feel fabulous. But a happy gay life isn’t about doing more, buying more, proving more, or becoming someone new. It’s about unlearning what was never yours to begin with and building a life that actually fits who you are today. In this episode, we share the 5 Building Blocks of a Happy Gay Life: love, money, wellness, lifestyle, and direction and purpose. We talk about why happiness is not a destination, why money can’t buy alignment, and why “know thyself” may be the most important financial, emotional, and retirement planning advice gay men can hear.In this episode, you’ll learn:Why many gay men feel successful but still not fully happyHow old scripts from family, religion, culture, and gay culture shape our livesWhy a happy gay life starts with knowing yourselfThe 5 Building Blocks of a Happy Gay LifeWhy money alone cannot create peace, purpose, or alignmentHow direction and purpose support love, money, wellness, and lifestyleWhy happiness is not about perfection, but progress toward a life that fitsIf you’ve ever wondered, “Is this it?” this episode is your reminder that it’s not a crisis. • Gay Retirement in the Philippines: 5 Affordable Gay-Friendly Cities Where Your Money Goes Further | Queer Money Ep. 642 19.05.2026 10min
Could the Philippines be one of the smartest places for gay retirement abroad if you want lower costs, warm weather, friendly locals, and a bigger life for less money? In this episode of Queer Money, we’re breaking down five affordable gay-friendly cities in the Philippines where LGBTQ+ retirees, especially gay men over 40, may be able to stretch their dollars, enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle, and explore early retirement abroad without needing Palm Springs money. The Philippines is a fascinating mix. Socially, it’s one of the more LGBTQ-accepting countries in Asia, with visible Pride events, queer spaces, and a generally warm “live and let live” culture in many places. Legally, however, it still lacks some major national LGBTQ+ protections, including full marriage equality and broad anti-discrimination laws. So, yes, the Philippines can be welcoming, but you still need to know where to go and what trade-offs to expect. That’s why we’re ranking five cities using the Queer Money Retirement Rating, weighing affordability, lifestyle, LGBTQ+ vibe, healthcare access, expat friendliness, and overall livability. We cover beach-adjacent Cebu City, calm and modern Iloilo, clean and green Davao, artsy mountain-town Baguio, and our number-one pick, Dumaguete, a coastal university town with a strong expat community and surprisingly low costs. If you’ve been wondering whether gay retirement in the Philippines is realistic, affordable, or even fabulous, this episode gives you a practical starting point.Takeaways from this episode:Which five cities offer the best mix of affordability and LGBTQ+ friendliness in the PhilippinesWhere two-bedroom rents can be as low as roughly $450 to $900 per monthWhy the Philippines may be a strong geoarbitrage option for gay retirees and early retireesWhich cities have stronger queer visibility, nightlife, Pride organizations, or expat communitiesWhy popular places like Siargao and Bonifacio Global City didn’t make the main listIf you’re considering gay retirement abroad, retiring early, or simply want your money to buy more freedom, the Philippines may deserve a much closer look.Chapters:00:00 - Intro00:37:16 #5 – Cebu City01:51:14 #4 – Iloilo City02:52:58 - About the Philippines04:12:53 #3 – Davao City05:01:39 #2 – Baguio07:01:53 #1 – Dumaguete08:11:39 - Honorable Mentions: Siargao & BGC08:57:49 - OutroMentioned in this episode:Optimize August Ad 2With political uncertainty growing in the U.S., now is the time to build your Plan B. • 7 Retirement Mistakes That Can Make You Hate Retirement | Queer Money Ep. 641 12.05.2026 12min
What if the dream retirement you’ve been working toward… isn’t actually the retirement that makes you happy? In this episode of Queer Money®, we’re talking about the 7 reasons why you might hate retirement, and more importantly, how to avoid them. Because retirement planning is not just about hitting your number, quitting your job, and finally living your best “no more Monday meetings” life. That sounds fabulous, yes. But without purpose, structure, identity, community, and clarity, retirement can feel less like freedom and more like a very expensive identity crisis. For many LGBTQ+ people, especially gay men over 40, retirement planning can come with extra emotional baggage. We’ve spent decades proving ourselves, building careers, surviving family rejection, managing money stress, and chasing safety. So when the career ends, the calendar clears, and the big retirement dream finally arrives, the question becomes: Now what?In this episode, we unpack why so many people feel disappointed after they retire, even if they planned financially.
