  • The Psychology of Gay Hookup Culture 10.08.2026 46min
Hookup culture is one of the most visible, debated, and misunderstood parts of gay male culture, but what does psychology actually tell us about it? In this episode, we explore the psychology of gay hookup culture, including how it developed, why gay male hookup culture is unique, and the psychological processes that can shape our experiences with casual sex. We look at sexual motivation, dopamine and novelty, reinforcement learning, attachment, minority stress, and the lasting influence of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. We also separate popular assumptions from what the research actually says: Are hookups bad for your mental health? Does casual sex make relationships harder? Are people hooking up because they're afraid of commitment? And is everyone really having as much sex as it seems? Rather than deciding whether hookup culture is good or bad, this episode takes a research-informed look at why it exists, how it works, and why the same experience can mean something very different from one person to another. • Gay Men and the Almost Relationship 03.08.2026 33min
This episode, we explore the psychology of what I’m calling the ”almost” relationship. An almost relationship is a connection that became psychologically significant before it became clearly defined. It had enough reality for your mind to begin organizing around it, but ended before it developed into an established relationship. Drawing from cognitive psychology, we explain why unfinished relationships can remain mentally active long after they’re over, why we replay conversations and search for answers, and why uncertainty can be so difficult for the mind to organize. Rather than focusing on closure, this episode examines what happens when a relationship ends before our minds have finished making sense of it. Whether you’ve spent weeks or years wondering what happened with someone you barely dated, this episode offers a different way of understanding why almost relationships can occupy so much mental space.
  • Do We Ever Overcome Internalized Homophobia? | Therapist Q&Gay 30.07.2026 17min

  • Gay Men and Compartmentalization 27.07.2026 47min
In this episode, we explore the psychology of compartmentalization through the lens of gay male development. Why do so many gay men feel like different people around family, at work, on dates, or in relationships? How do concealment, minority stress, and years of adapting to different environments shape the way we organize ourselves? And when does a strategy that once protected us begin to limit us?
  • Am I Attractive Enough for a Boyfriend? | Therapist Q&Gay 23.07.2026 18min
Nyc therapist and host of boy meets therapy podcast Dustin answers questions from viewers submitted via Instagram. This week, we answer questions about feeling attractive or prepared enough for a relationship and losing an important friend group. Submit a question via email (boymeetstherapy@gmail.com) or Instagram (@boymeetstherapy).  Connect with boy meets therapy: Instagram: @boymeetstherapy TikTok: @boymeetstherapy Website with Free Resources: boymeetstherapy.com Blog: www.boymeetstherapy.com/blog Work with Me: www.boymeetstherapy.com/work-with-me Created and Produced by Dustin Oliver
  • Gay Men and the Confusion of Friendship and Romance 20.07.2026 28min
In this episode, we explore why it can be surprisingly difficult to distinguish friendship from romance, and why this confusion may be especially common among gay men. We examine how our early experiences of attraction, friendship, and belonging often become intertwined, how emotional intimacy can be mistaken for romantic attraction, and why some relationships that begin as dating ultimately feel more like friendship.
  • Gay Men and the Obsession with Pop Stars 13.07.2026 33min
In this episode, we explore identity development, belonging, self-expression, parasocial relationships, reinvention, and the role pop stars often play in helping gay men imagine who they are allowed to become.
  • The Psychology of Grindr 06.07.2026 49min
In this episode, we explore the psychology behind Grindr and other hookup apps. Topics include intermittent reinforcement, anticipation, fantasy, social comparison, attention, connection, and the power of possibility.
  • Gay Men and the Weight of Longing 29.06.2026 51min
In this episode, we explore the psychology of longing. From relationships and belonging to future possibilities and unlived experiences, longing is one of the most common yet least discussed parts of being human. Drawing from psychology, neuroscience, and LGBTQ development, this episode examines why longing exists, why it can become so powerful, and why many gay men may become especially familiar with it.
  • Gay Men and the Parallel Life 22.06.2026 41min
Many gay men do not simply grieve relationships, opportunities, or experiences. Sometimes we grieve entire developmental pathways: The city you never moved to. The relationship that almost happened. The friend group you thought you would find. The version of yourself that might have emerged if you had come out sooner. Drawing on research in counterfactual thinking, narrative identity, ambiguous loss, and queer development, this episode explores why certain possibilities stay with us long after they have passed and why this experience may carry particular weight for many gay men. What if the question is not whether we chose the right path, but what those unrealized paths can teach us about who we are and what we still value?
  • Gay Men and the Fantasy Relationship 15.06.2026 45min
This conversation dives into the unique kind of longing many gay men experience, especially after spending years watching relationships happen around them before getting the chance to participate in one themselves. We unpack why shorter relationships, mixed signals, and “what could have been” dynamics can leave such a lasting impact, and why grief in these situations often feels bigger than we expect.
  • The Psychology of Gay Aging 08.06.2026 30min
What does aging mean in a community that often feels organized around youth, desirability, and reinvention? In this episode, Dustin explores the psychology of aging in the gay community and why it can feel different for many gay men. From “twink death” jokes and body image pressure to loneliness, chosen family, delayed development, and the fear of running out of time, we unpack what may actually sit underneath anxiety about getting older. Dustin also explores research on minority stress, LGBTQ+ aging, body image, and resilience, while discussing why many gay men feel simultaneously younger and older than they are, the psychological impact of coming out later in life, and what happens when desirability begins to shift.
  • Beyond Coming Out: What Happens Next? 01.06.2026 36min
It’s PRIDE month!  If you’ve ever wondered about the origins of Pride month in June, I’m gonna give you the shortest, most followable explanation. After, we’re jumping right into coming out! For many Gay and Queer people, coming out is sold to us as the moment everything finally clicks. You stop hiding, become confident, find your people, start dating, and finally feel like yourself. But what happens when that is not the experience? In this episode, we explore the emotional reality that often comes after coming out. Why do so many LGBTQ+ people still feel lonely, disconnected, awkward, or behind even after finally being honest about who they are? Why can coming out feel freeing and confusing at the same time? I’m also going to introduce a new concept to you that I am calling The Gray Zone. This is a period of the realization that you can no longer live inauthentically, but you haven’t formed a true sense of Self to return to. If you have ever wondered, “Why do I still feel lost even after coming out?” this episode is for you.
  • The Psychology of Gay Code-Switching 04.05.2026 22min
In this solo episode, host Dustin explores the psychology of code-switching, the process of adjusting your behavior, personality, or identity depending on your environment. Using research from Minority Stress Theory and studies on identity and authenticity, we break down why people code-switch and how it can lead to stress, burnout, and a fragmented sense of self. We also discuss how code-switching shows up in LGBTQ spaces, including the pressure to perform masculinity and fit into social hierarchies within the gay community.
  • Chronic Pain and Mind-Body Connection with Sean Hershey 27.04.2026 44min
In this conversation, therapist Sean Hershey explores the complex relationship between emotional, psychological, and physical aspects of chronic pain. Discover how repressed emotions and self-connection play a crucial role in healing and how mind-body approaches can transform understanding and treatment.
  • The War on Gay Femininity 20.04.2026 37min
Why is femininity often devalued among gay men and where do those preferences actually come from? In this episode, host Dustin breaks down the psychology of masculinity, femininity, and attraction using a clinical lens. Moving beyond surface-level “preference” debates, this conversation explores how gender expression, early social experiences, and cultural reinforcement shape what we’re drawn to and how we see ourselves. This episode is about understanding where our preferences come from and what they may be doing beneath the surface.
  • Religious Trauma in the LGBTQ Community, Part 3: How to Move Forward 13.04.2026 27min
In Part 3 of this series, we focus on what it actually looks like to start shifting the patterns many LGBTQ people carry after growing up in environments where identity and belonging were in conflict. From self-monitoring and difficulty trusting yourself to complicated relationships with desire and discomfort, this episode breaks down how change happens in a way that’s realistic and grounded. We cover key shifts like moving out of constant self-evaluation, rebuilding trust in your own instincts, reinterpreting discomfort, and understanding your relationship to desire without judgment. We also explore deconstruction as a process of reclaiming internal authority, and the role of grief in acknowledging what wasn’t there. • Religious Trauma in the LGBTQ Community, Part 2: What It Feels Like 06.04.2026 24min
Religious trauma doesn’t always show up in obvious ways. In Part 2 of this series, host and therapist Dustin speaks on how we move beyond definitions and patterns and focus on what religious trauma actually feels like. These are the experiences that often go unnamed but shape how you think, relate, and move through the world. For many LGBTQ people, it’s not just what you believe, it’s how you experience yourself day to day. A constant sense of being slightly off. Monitoring yourself in conversations. Questioning your instincts. Feeling disconnected from your body. Or noticing that desire and intimacy feel more complicated than they should.
