These experiences are then observed and reported through the lens of the personal self. The personal self (mind) wants to understand what happened. It wants to conceptualize that which lies beyond concepts, which is impossible. By entertaining these thoughts the attention is pulled into identification with the personal 'me', which begins seeking and trying to re-create experiences. In order to abide as the True self in a lasting way, what is required is to be aware of these mind movements when they appear and not engage with them. However, this is not always the case. One can recognize their true nature as pure consciousness and also experience sadness or dullness in the body / heart. This is because the physical form is dense so it takes time for transformation to happen. This isn't a problem and doesn't cause suffering unless there is resistance to the experience and/or identification with a belief that something different should be experienced. If you experience the heart as being 'closed' follow this simple guidance:1. Rest your attention as the aware witness, free from identification with thought or agendas.2. Consciously include the experience of the body as alive sensations.3. Gently inquire, 'what is the actual experience in the body? How does it feel?'4. Take your attention closer to the experience until you become one with it and totally surrender to the feeling.5. Remember, it's not about waiting for something to change or achieve anything, just surrendering to what is.6. Beyond the Meditator: Is Doing Nothing Enough? 13.03.2026 3minIn this dialogue, Louise Kay explains how to focus the attention during meditation. She invites the questioner to directly recognize that the True self (pure consciousness) is not the body, nor the mind or emotions, but transcendent of all forms and experiences. Even with this seeing it is common for a subtle layer of a sense of personal 'I' to remain and that too must be seen as illusory.When the attention comes to rest as pure awareness one can sense a subtle pull to surrender to the absolute. Recognize that your system is triggered. If step 1 is not possible you will react unconsciously and there's nothing that you can do about it. If that happens, the moment you become aware again, simply remain present. Don't identify with thoughts that tell a story that "I failed", "why did I react like that?", "I should have been more present" etc. Reset and meet the moment fresh. Let the past go.2. Recognize that this challenge is an opportunity for your growth. Remain thankful because after all, you want to become more conscious right? So this is the best thing for you. Receive the challenge with gratitude and you will not be a victim to the situation.3. Recognize yourself as the aware witness. Don't identify with any thought that appears, simply observe thoughts. Don't identify with the experience of the body, simply give it permission to fully feel whatever it's feeling. Keep your attention light a laser light of presence, unmoving as the perceiver of the experience.4. Observe thoughts appearing and disappearing. Don't believe anything they say, don't try to stop, control or change them. Simply allow and witness the thoughts as a neutral observer.5. Bring your attention deeply present into the body. Just notice how the body feels and then gently move your attention closer to any uncomfortable sensations until you become one with them. The perspective of the conceptual self: from this perspective there is identification with an imagined character, referred to as 'I' and there is total identification with it. There is usually a belief that 'I' am not enough in some way (broken/traumatized/unlovable etc etc) and the motivation to heal these problems lies in the belief that one day in the future everything will be ok. Until that moment arrives there is a sense of lack and incompleteness (spoiler alert - that moment will never arrive).2. The perspective of 'me' awareness: from this perspective there is no identification with a separate, individual 'I', but a recognition that the true self is pure awareness, which is formless and invisible. As a side effect of abiding as awareness, unprocessed emotions, energies and unconscious conditionings are drawn out of the physical body and into the light of consciousness. There is peace before experience, during experience and also after experience. The process of integration and healing takes place on the level of form and is witnessed and surrendered to without agendas, effort or control.
