There is a promise in the book of Isaiah so often quoted, printed on so many walls and cards and gifts, that its familiarity can work against it, letting it slide past the ear without ever truly landing in the heart the way it was meant to. Today we want to slow all the way down, resist the temptation to rush past what we already think we know, and sit for an extended time inside a single verse that carries far more weight than its brevity first suggests. The verse we want to explore today, at real length and real depth, is Isaiah forty-one ten, where God speaks these words to His people: "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

There is a command in Scripture so demanding that it has unsettled readers for two thousand years, and it comes not from an obscure corner of the text but directly from the mouth of Jesus himself, spoken plainly, with no softening qualifiers attached. The verse we want to sit with today is Matthew five forty-four, where Jesus says, "But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you."To feel the full weight of this command, we need to understand what it was replacing. Jesus had just quoted a familiar teaching of the time: love your neighbor and hate your enemy. This wasn't a fringe idea; it reflected the natural moral instinct of nearly every culture in history, including much of the religious thinking of his own day. Loving those who love you back, and treating those who oppose you with suspicion or hostility, is not a controversial ethic. It's the default setting of human relationships everywhere, ancient and modern alike. Jesus doesn't adjust this default setting slightly. He overturns it entirely. But I tell you, he says, using language that directly contradicts the accepted wisdom of his listeners, love your enemies.

There is a particular kind of darkness that has nothing to do with the absence of light around us and everything to do with the absence of clarity within us, the disorienting sense of not knowing which way to step next when every direction looks equally uncertain. Scripture speaks directly into that exact experience in one of the most beloved verses of the Psalms. The verse we want to sit with today is Psalm one hundred nineteen, one hundred five, where the psalmist writes, "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes not from physical labor but from the relentless effort of trying to hold everything together on our own: managing outcomes we cannot control, anticipating threats that may never come, keeping watch over circumstances that were never ours to guard in the first place. Scripture speaks directly into that exhaustion, and nowhere more piercingly than in a single verse tucked into the middle of the Psalms. The verse we want to sit with today is Psalm forty-six ten, where God speaks these words: “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
