Bright Days, Dark Nights: How Light Controls Your Health | Dr. Sean Cain 31.07.2026 1j 40minIn this episode, my guest is Dr. Sean Cain, PhD, a Harvard Medical School-trained expert in the impact of light on the human circadian system, a Matthew Flinders Professor at Flinders University, and Co-Founder and CEO of Circadian Health Innovations. Today, he discusses how people differ more than fiftyfold in how sensitive their circadian systems are to evening light, that nearly half of modern homes are bright enough at night to suppress melatonin by fifty percent, and that most of us have no conscious awareness of any of it. We discuss the large observational studies he and his team have published linking bright days and dark nights to depression, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mortality, as well as his research on impaired light sensitivity in depression and why the amplitude of your circadian rhythm may matter more than its timing. We also discuss MiEye, the wearable light sensor his team developed, and practical changes to home and daytime lighting that anyone can make tonight.CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL SHOWNOTESThis includes all other resourcesSponsor: Brighter Lamphttps://getbrighter.com/?sjram=P2jrTbowzJOdCode: JONATHANJ Subscribe to the newsletter: https://jonathanjarecki.substack.com/?utm_campaign=profile_chipsTimestamps 00:00 Intro03:54 Dr. Sean Cain04:42 Dr. Cain's Love for Science and Research10:25 Understanding Circadian Rhythms: Anatomy and Function10:56 Setting the stage: Circadian Biology, Rhythms, SCN, ipRGCs16:20 Light, Circadian Entrainment, Mechanisms19:57 High Sensitivity and Interindividual Variability in the Response of the Circadian of the Human Circa22:02 Individual Sensitivity to Light and Circadian Disruption27:22 Home Lighting, Sunset, LEDs, Fluorescents, Incandescents27:37 Home Lighting and Its Effects on Circadian Health33:46 Tools: circadian friendly home lighting39:24 Population health outcomes; UK BioBank39:29 Psychiatric Disorders47:52 SPONSOR: Brighter Lamp49:34 The Link Between Light Exposure and Mental Health01:04:18 Light Exposure and Longevity: Key Findings01:09:45 The Importance of Daylight for Health01:17:41 Understanding Circadian Rhythms and Light Exposure01:17:52 The Impact of Light on Mood and Self-Perception01:23:39 Innovations in Circadian Health: My Eye Device01:34:15 Jet Lag Management and the Jet Lag App01:39:09 Support, YouTube, Spotify & Apple Follow, Reviews & Feedback, Social Media, Substack Newsletter -
I Never Went to the Doctor Growing Up | My Mom Explains Why 27.07.2026 2j 12minMy guest is my mom, Rosebud, a mother of four who spent fifty years building a life around preventative medicine. In this episode she tells her whole story: growing up with no money in Ozone Park, Queens; losing her father at three, her brother at thirty-two, and her first husband at twenty-five; and how that grief turned into a set of convictions about how she wanted to raise her children. We talk about the plant-based, vegetable-heavy way we ate growing up, the natural births, the years she spent learning from John Galamaga, and the pushback she took for doing things differently. Transform Your Health by Optimizing Mitochondria, Bioelectricity, and Alkalinity | John Galamaga 08.08.2024 1j 12minIn this episode, my guest is John Galamaga, a licensed massage therapist and certified personal trainer from the Cooper Institute in Dallas. He’s also a Senior Master Instructor in LAMAS QiGong, and a foremost expert in the field of health and wellness with over 40 years of experience. Today we discuss how to leverage movement, nutrition, and other lifestyle factors to enhance your overall health. John draws from his extensive experience to share personal stories and setbacks that led him to profound insights. After a health scare during a workout and unsatisfactory answers from his cardiologist, John, 20 years old at the time, sought alternative solutions with an open mind. His journey revealed that the traditional medical approach might not be the best path to a healthier lifestyle.Building on this, we explore why high-intensity training might not be the optimal route to better health and its effects on mitochondrial function. We then discuss science backed practices that enhance mitochondrial health, which have yet to emerge in the mainstream fitness world. We also discuss proper stretching techniques, the idea of a “one diet fits all” approach, ancient practices of Qigong and sungazing, electromagnetic therapy, and he challenges common misconceptions within the health space. We close the discussion with actionable steps and key takeaways to help you kickstart and further your health journey. How Water Powers Cellular Energy & Human Health | Dr. Gerald Pollack 05.04.2025 2jIn this episode, my guest is Dr. Gerald Pollack, a renowned professor of bioengineering at the University of Washington and founding editor-in-chief of the journal Water. Dr. Pollack is widely recognized for his groundbreaking discoveries in cell biology and water science, particularly his identification of the “fourth phase” of water—also known as EZ (exclusion zone) water. His research offers a radical rethinking of how water functions in biological systems, challenging classical theories. Today we explore the foundations of Dr. Pollack’s theory, emphasizing the influential research of the late Gilbert Ling. We begin by examining key topics such as the existence of the cell membrane, evidence challenging ATP as the cell’s energy currency, and the disproofs of the membrane-pump theory. We also question conventional models of the atom and consider how Dr. Pollack’s findings connect to these paradigm shifts. Finally, we discuss the discoveries from Dr. Pollack’s lab and their far-reaching implications for biology and human health.Full Show Notes Here.
