Our Calm AF Community is open September 23-25. Learn more and sign up here. If you've spent your whole life making sure everyone else is okay before you even THINK about yourself…this episode is for youuuuu. Because somewhere along the way, you probably learned there were only two choices in life: either you become the person who shows up for everyone all the time no matter what it costs you…or you become an asshole. So naturally? You chose exhausted. In this episode, we're talking about: people pleasing hypervigilance emotional overfunctioning why your nervous system keeps pulling you back into self abandonment and why there are actually NINETEEN other options between martyr and asshole Also, I tell the story about the time my son genuinely thought he could grow up to be a dog, which somehow became the perfect metaphor for this entire conversation. If you are tired of being the exhausted background character in your own life, this episode will feel like a giant nervous system exhale. In this episode, we talk about: why people pleasing starts so early for so many of us how childhood conditioning teaches us to become "good" the connection between hypervigilance and overgiving why boundaries feel unsafe to the nervous system emotional burnout and resentment the Calm AF Scale and nervous system regulation the "martyr vs asshole" trap why there are nineteen other choices between those extremes how to become the main character in your own life again nervous system recalibration and repetition why caring less does NOT make you selfish
  • How She Was Fully Present For Her Dad's Last Day 24.09.2026 16min
How do you stay fully present in the moments that matter most, especially when every instinct tells you to go into fix-it mode? In this bonus episode, my client Danielle shares what happened when she arrived home to be with her dad on the last day of his life. For years, Danielle took care of everything and everyone except herself. Her life had gotten so far away from her that she wasn't really living in it anymore. So she committed to doing things differently, with a permission slip to "do it shitty" and a community rooting for her. She showed up every day. Some days all in. Some days barely there. And 1,007 days later, when one of the hardest moments of her life arrived, she didn't walk in as the fixer. She walked in as a daughter. In this episode: Why the ordinary, boring moments of your life matter more than you think How showing up imperfectly every day creates real, lasting identity change What it looks like to be present in a hard moment instead of managing everyone else's feelings Why busyness protects us from pain, and also from love, joy, and connection How grief can hold room for sadness and laughter at the same time You don't know what you're practicing for. You only get to decide who you'll be when it matters. Listen to Danielle's first conversation on the podcast: Part 1 and Part 2 The Calm AF Community is open for enrollment now through Friday, September 25th. In this episode, I talk about why we forget what matters so quickly, and how to actually live in the moment instead of waiting for someday. Almost four years ago, I shared an Instagram caption that people still ask me about: "We will not sip these days through straws." It was posted by a mom recording an ordinary Tuesday with her kids, just months before she died. When we're reminded of our mortality, we remember what matters. Then, seven minutes later, we're mad about the dishwasher. In this episode: Why knowing what matters isn't enough, and why understanding your patterns isn't the same as changing them How I think about being productive and ambitious without missing your actual life The three parts of real identity change: your story, your capacity to feel, and your nervous system set point Why nervous system regulation teaches your body that discomfort and danger aren't the same thing How lasting change happens through repetition in real life, while your life is life-ing You don't have to choose between getting shit done and being present. You just have to stop missing the life you already have. The Calm AF Community is open for enrollment September 23rd, 24th, and 25th only. • How to Stop Worrying About the Future And Stop Missing Your Life 16.09.2026 14min
Are you spending so much time worrying about the future that you're missing the life you're actually living? In this episode of Calm AF, Kristen is sharing what happened when a packed weekend of travel, family, football, and a Brandi Carlile concert brought an old pattern back to the surface: mentally living two hours—or two days—ahead instead of being present. You'll hear how overthinking, hypervigilance, and constantly trying to manage what might happen next can steal your attention from the moments you actually care about most. She'll share what helped her stop worrying about the future, come back to the present moment, and enjoy her life as it was happening—not just look back later and remember that she technically did all the things. If you struggle with anxiety about the future, overthinking, staying present, or feeling like you're always bracing for what comes next, this episode will help you notice when you've mentally left your own life—and come back sooner. Kristen also shares why this kind of change comes from practice, not just insight, and how the Calm AF Community helps you stay connected to yourself while you're out living your actual life. • The Resentment Sandwich (Resentment, People Pleasing & Owning Your Shit) 09.09.2026 14min
What are you feeding yourself? Years ago, I was standing in my kitchen making jelly toast for toddler Parker while absolutely SEETHING with resentment about the general bullshit imbalance of motherhood. Then I watched his tiny little hand pick up a piece and thought: Oh my God. I just fed this baby a resentment sandwich. And yes, I know resentment is not an actual condiment. But that moment changed the way I thought about emotional regulation, people pleasing, and what it actually means to take responsibility for your own shit. Because we like to think that as long as we aren't yelling at anyone, our resentment, anxiety, anger, shame, and fear are ours alone. They're not. We bring what we're carrying into the room. In this episode, we're talking about what resentment is actually trying to tell you, why nervous system regulation lets you care deeply without being consumed by everything you care about, and a version of self-love that is a whole lot less floofy than you might think: Stop feeding yourself shit you would never feed someone you love. You don't need to never feel messy emotions. You just need to notice what's on the knife before you spread it all over everything. Do no harm. Take no shit. Eat no shit. • Why Birthdays, Mother's Day & Weekends Can Feel So Disappointing 02.09.2026 12min
Why do birthdays, Mother's Day, weekends, or other special occasions leave you feeling so disappointed or resentful? Even when you were really looking forward to them? In this episode, Kristen talks with Calm AF client Courtney who LOVES birthdays. Hers, yours, everyones.  But for years, Courtney's birthdays came with big expectations and, often, big disappointment. As she and Kristen talk, they realize that her birthday had unknowingly become a pressure filled day: because it was the only day of the year that she was allowed to be special.   She shares with us what changed last year when she stopped waiting for other people to read her mind, make her feel special, or create the perfect day for her and started deciding for herself how she wanted to feel. You'll hear how Courtney went from feeling disappointed by birthdays to having her best birthday ever, simply by choosing how she wanted to feel and making plans that supported those feelings. Kristen and Courtney talk about: • Why birthdays, Mother's Day, weekends, and special occasions can carry so much emotional pressure • What happens when we make other people responsible for making a day feel special • The connection between disappointment, expectations, and wanting to feel seen • How to stop waiting for people to read your mind • Choosing how you want to feel before deciding what a "good" day should look like • Celebrating yourself without needing someone else to do it first • Why buying yourself the flowers, skipping the PTA meeting, or asking for the cake you actually want can be a much bigger deal than it sounds Because the real shift isn't learning how to plan a better birthday. It's realizing you don't have to wait for a birthday—or Mother's Day, or the weekend, or anyone else's permission—to feel seen, cared for, and fully yourself. The Calm AF Community is opening its doors September 23–25. • You're Already Good at Discomfort...Just the Wrong Kind 26.08.2026 14min
You're already good at being uncomfortable. You overthink. You walk on eggshells. You manage everyone else's moods. You put yourself last. You beat yourself up. You stay exhausted, resentful, anxious, and hypervigilant. That's discomfort. It's just familiar discomfort. In this episode, I'm breaking down the distinction between familiar discomfort and unfamiliar discomfort — and why the discomfort you keep trying to avoid may be the exact thing that ends the discomfort you're already living with. Because if you want to stop people-pleasing, you have to tolerate the discomfort of not people-pleasing. If you want to stop abandoning your boundaries, you have to tolerate what happens when someone doesn't like them. If you want to stop beating yourself up, you have to learn how to exist without using self-criticism to keep yourself in line. None of that necessarily feels better at first. It feels unfamiliar. And your nervous system often interprets unfamiliar as dangerous — even when the familiar thing is the one making you miserable. I'll also tell you about the client I coached for one hour and three minutes straight on a group call — on purpose. She didn't need more information. She needed practice staying in the unfamiliar discomfort of taking up space, being seen, and not rushing to make herself smaller. That's how you expand your capacity: not by trying harder to stop overthinking, but by giving your nervous system evidence that you can stay in an unfamiliar, uncomfortable moment and make it all the way through. In this episode, you'll learn: The difference between familiar and unfamiliar discomfort Why painful patterns can still feel "safer" to your nervous system How hypervigilance, people-pleasing, overthinking, and self-criticism become familiar Why boundaries often feel worse before they feel freeing What it actually means to expand your nervous system's capacity Why insight alone doesn't change a pattern What happened during that 63-minute coaching session How to start practicing the kind of discomfort that creates real change If you don't know your nervous system's dysregulation pattern yet, take the What Is Your Dysregulation Pattern? quiz linked in the show notes. And remember: getting comfortable with discomfort doesn't mean staying in resentment, anxiety, or exhaustion longer. It means getting willing to feel the unfamiliar discomfort that gets you out of them. → Find your nervous system pattern (free quiz) Every nervous system gets stuck in a specific pattern — tired-wired-hypervigilant is one; there are two others. • Q: Will I ever truly learn to love myself? 19.08.2026 7min
"Will I ever truly learn to love myself? Logically I believe it — but I get so frustrated because I don't fully feel it." A client sent me that specific question this week, and the answer came to me so fast I knew it had to be an episode. Because it is probably NOT the answer you're expecting. The belief that self-love is a skill you have to study, practice, and eventually graduate from is the exact thing standing in your way. You already know how to love yourself — you do it all the time...you just haven't noticed. In this episode: Why "learning to love yourself" is the wrong frame — and what to do instead The proof you already know how to love (you're doing it constantly) What self-love actually feels like — quiet, ordinary, and easy to miss The everyday moments that are self-love in disguise: going to bed on time, letting yourself off the hook, stopping the self-beat-up Why the striving is really a dysregulation pattern — and how regulating changes everything You're not behind on some self-love curriculum. The love has been there the whole time — it's just buried under the belief that you haven't learned it yet. • Why Your Brain Always Assumes the Worst (And How to Get Out of Fight-or-Flight) 12.08.2026 22min
It's 11:07pm. You're staring at a text you sent three hours ago that still hasn't been answered — and your brain has already decided the relationship is over, they hate you, you're going to lose your job, and you'll end up alone and broke forever. If that spiral sounds familiar, it's not because you're dramatic or bad at life. It's because your nervous system flipped into fight-or-flight, and a primitive, survival-wired part of your brain took over — and it genuinely can't tell the difference between a real threat and an unanswered text. This is one of the most downloaded episodes Kristen has ever released, and it's back for a reason: once you understand why your brain jumps straight to the worst-case scenario, you finally know how to stop it from running your life. Through a genuinely terrifying (and pretty funny) story about being frozen on a rattlesnake trail, Kristen breaks down what's actually happening in your nervous system when you get triggered, why stress hijacks your ability to think clearly, and the exact steps to get yourself out of fight-or-flight and back into the part of your brain where change, courage, and calm are actually possible. In this episode: Why your brain treats an unanswered text, a hard conversation, or the news like a life-or-death emergency The three parts of your brain — and which one is quietly running the show What fight, flight, and freeze actually are (and why "just calm down" never works) How fear keeps you small — avoiding hard conversations, new opportunities, and change Three simple, in-the-moment tools to shut the spiral down: letting fear be your copilot, breathing, and "notice and narrate" You don't need to become fearless. You need to stop letting fear drive. Find your nervous system pattern (free quiz) Every nervous system gets stuck in a specific pattern — tired-wired-hypervigilant is one; there are two others. • Why You're Exhausted All Day but Can't Sleep at Night 05.08.2026 17min
You're wiped by 2pm. You count down the hours until you can finally lie down. And then you get into bed — and your brain wakes up. Heart racing a little. Running tomorrow's list. Rewriting the text you sent. Replaying a meeting from three days ago. Exhausted and buzzing at the exact same time. If you're dead tired all day but wide awake at night — and from the outside you look completely, totally fine — this episode is for you. Most of the high-functioning women I work with think they have three separate problems: anxiety, burnout, and bad sleep. You don't have three problems. You have one. And once you see it, all of it gets so much simpler. In this episode, I break down the real reason you're tired but wired — a nervous system that's been stuck in the "on" position for so long it forgot how to power down. We get into high-functioning anxiety (the kind that looks like having it all handled), why burnout shows up in your body and not just your mood, and how years of running hot scrambles the internal clock that's supposed to bring you up in the morning and down at night. That's the 2pm crash. That's the 2am wide-awake. Same broken off-switch. I'll also tell you what does NOT fix it — no, you can't out-discipline it, and no, the magnesium and melatonin won't touch it — and give you the very first move to start tonight. What we cover Why "exhausted all day but can't sleep at night" is one problem, not three High-functioning anxiety: the motor that never turns off (even when you look calm) What years of running on high alert actually costs your body (allostatic load, in plain English) The three parts of burnout the World Health Organization recognizes — and why you know all three Why your stress hormones flip: foggy when you should be up, wired when you should be down Tired but wired, explained: the gas pedal's stuck and the brake won't catch Why this is NOT your fault — and why it means you're not too far gone The one thing that actually moves the needle: nervous system regulation A 60-second tool you can use tonight when your brain won't quit One thing to try tonight When your head hits the pillow and your brain clicks on, stop trying to out-think it. One hand on your chest, one on your stomach, and make your exhale longer than your inhale. A long, slow breath out is the clearest signal you can send your body that the danger has passed. • A Panic Attack in Costco (Why Your Nervous System Still Freaks Out Sometimes) 22.07.2026 12min
You've been doing the work.  Learning how to regulate your nervous system. Feeling your feelings instead of trying to fix them. You're basically Calm AF....so why does an email still send you into a full-blown panic attack in the middle of Costco? In this episode, I'm sharing the story of a client who found herself asking the same question. She was so upset that after years of doing this would still happen. And the answer isn't that she's not getting better. Her nervous system did exactly what it was designed to do. You need to understand that nervous system healing isn't about never feeling anxious again, that additional stress can make old survival patterns more likely to resurface, and why learning from a spinout is way more helpful than judging yourself for having one. I'm bringing back a favorite calm AF character: the Bouncer and why it's so important to remember to put the bouncer at the door to help you run everything through a filter: does THIS input get to come in right now? If you've ever gotten frustrated over why you're still getting triggered even though you're making real progress, this episode will remind you that the occasional hard day doesn't erase years of work. Your nervous system is always gonna nervous system but you are rewiring it every time you practice. In this episode, you'll learn: Why panic attacks can still happen even after years of nervous system healing. How stress and life changes make old survival responses more likely to reappear. What the "bouncer at the door" technique is and how to use it with everyday triggers. How to review a panic attack with curiosity instead of self-judgment. Why your progress is measured by how you recover—not by never getting triggered. • Why Venting Makes You Feel Worse (Not Better) 15.07.2026 11min
"I just needed to get that out." "I feel better once I verbally process it." If that's the story you tell yourself, this episode is going to poke holes in it. That habit is venting and it makes you feel worse, not better. At least not in any way that lasts. And it might be the exact thing keeping you stuck. Here's the thing about "getting it out": when you sit down to vent, you're not releasing anything. You're building a case. You're the lawyer and the jury, gathering evidence that you were right all along that you're not lovable, that money's hard, that bad things always happen to you. That's confirmation bias, and your brain is wired to go prove whatever you already believe. So every time you tell the story, you pave that pathway a little smoother. That's how a thought becomes a belief. That's how a belief becomes your reality. In this episode I'll break down why venting feels so good in the moment (spoiler: it's the same relief as caving on the drink or the cookie you swore off), why "I can't help it" is a practiced habit and not a fact, and the one thing to do instead...release the feeling, not the story. If your mind has felt like a hard place to live lately, this one's for you. No more indulging. Just feel it, and go. What You'll Take Away Why venting only works for about twenty minutes and what it costs you after What confirmation bias actually is, and how your brain "collects receipts" for beliefs that keep you stuck The difference between feeling a feeling and telling the story (they are not the same thing) Why "I can't help it" is a habit you practiced not a life sentence How to release the pressure without paving the pathway you're trying to change 🩵 Get individualized support Get direct access to me for personalized guidance, honest feedback, nervous system calibration, and support tailored to your specific goals, challenges, and circumstances. • Are You a Good Student or Are You Dysregulated? Why Doing Everything Right Still Isn't Calming Your Anxiety 08.07.2026 15min
You've been doing everything right. Setting your intentions. Regulating on purpose. You didn't just listen to the episode on thought spirals — you listened to every episode, on 1.5 speed, because that's who you are. The A+ student. The gold star collector. The one who does the extra credit. And then it's 5:00 on a Thursday, your husband walks in in a mood, and everything you've been practicing flies out the window. And now you're not just frustrated with him — you're questioning whether any of this is even working. In this episode, I'm showing you the sneaky truth about being the good student: the rule-following and gold-star collecting was never really about being the best. It was a safety strategy. And it never actually worked — no matter how many stars you earned, you never stopped scanning for danger. Now you're using that exact same strategy to try to get calm... and you're trying to heal your hypervigilance with hypervigilance. In this episode: The third-grade story that your nervous system will feel in real time (Chris and Danny, I'm looking at you) Why running to check "is it working? am I fixed?" is the same nervous system move as scanning for trouble The actual coaching audio I sent a private client after her 5:00 kitchen meltdown The pickle jar principle: why one hard moment doesn't erase the muscle you're building The shift: you won't feel relaxed when you've earned enough gold stars — you'll feel relaxed when you relax about feeling relaxed Your practice is working. You Don't Need More Time to Prepare You tell yourself you just need to think about it a little more. Do one more pass. Get a little more clarity before you commit. It feels responsible. But what if it's not preparation?  What if it's actually a sneaky way your dysregulation shows upd In this episode, we're looking at one of the most socially acceptable forms of dysregulation — overpreparing — through the story of a client who had three weeks to put together the pitch of her career, and spent almost all of it burying the version she'd already written. You'll learn how to tell the difference between actually being unprepared and just chasing certainty, why your nervous system has to be sneaky about how it stalls you, and why the amount of time you think you need has almost nothing to do with the amount of time it would actually take. 🩵 Get individualized support Get direct access to me for personalized guidance, honest feedback, nervous system calibration, and support tailored to your specific goals, challenges, and circumstances. • Why Working Harder Doesn't Solve the Problem 24.06.2026 9min
Your whole life you've been told that when something feels bad, you should do something about it. Think harder. Work harder. Make a plan. Research the solution. Figure it out. But what if all that effort is the thing keeping you stuck? In this episode, I share a coaching conversation with a client who found herself angry after realizing how much she'd been carrying in her relationships. Like most high achievers, her instinct wasn't to feel the anger. It was to get busy. To solve. To fix. To do something. What she discovered instead is something I see all the time: Sometimes you're not solving the problem. You're solving the discomfort. And sometimes the action you think is helping is actually creating more work, more exhaustion, and more distance from the thing that needs your attention. We talk about why uncomfortable feelings so often trigger action, how hypervigilance disguises itself as responsibility, and why learning to feel a feeling without treating it like an emergency might be one of the most important skills you ever build. Because sometimes there isn't actually a problem to solve. There's just a feeling to feel. 🩵 Get individualized support Get direct access to me for personalized guidance, honest feedback, nervous system calibration, and support tailored to your specific goals, challenges, and circumstances. • The Loneliness of Being "The One" (And How To Feel Like You Belong) 17.06.2026 15min
Have you ever felt lonely in a room full of people who genuinely care about you? In this episode, I'm sharing a realization that completely changed the way I think about belonging. For years, I believed I just hadn't found "my people" yet. But after finding myself in a room that should have felt like home—and realizing I still felt like an outsider—I uncovered something much deeper. If you're the person everyone depends on, the helper, the fixer, the strong one, this conversation is for you. We'll explore why fitting in and belonging aren't the same thing, why receiving help doesn't always feel helpful, and the hidden role vulnerability plays in creating real connection. You'll learn why being needed can feel safer than being seen, how your nervous system may be keeping you stuck in the role of "the one," and what it takes to experience belonging without having to earn it. If you've ever wondered why you still feel unseen despite having supportive relationships, this episode offers a different answer—and a path forward. In this episode, you'll learn: The difference between fitting in and truly belonging Why being the strong one can create unexpected loneliness The hidden connection between vulnerability and connection Why asking for help isn't always the same as feeling supported How to start retraining your nervous system to feel safe being seen To learn more about private coaching, click here. 🩵 Get daily support The Daily Recalibration gives you short daily reminders to help your nervous system stop defaulting to people pleasing, overfunctioning, and self abandonment. • Client Story: Energetic Integrity (And Why Your Energy Speaks Louder Than Your Words) 03.06.2026 7min
In Part 2 of my conversation with Courtney, we explore a powerful concept that most people have never been taught: energetic integrity. Have you ever told someone, "I'm fine," while every part of you knew you weren't? Or sensed that someone else's words didn't match the energy they were giving off? That's energetic integrity. In this episode, we talk about what happens when your words and your energy don't match, why people can feel the truth even when you're trying to hide it, and how being out of energetic alignment creates unnecessary stress, disconnection, and emotional exhaustion. We also explore parenting, emotional honesty, trusting your intuition, and why children often sense what adults are feeling long before anything is said out loud. Most importantly, we discuss how creating more joy, playfulness, and emotional honesty doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes shifting your energy is as simple as putting on a unicorn costume, dancing in your kitchen, or allowing yourself to tell the truth about how you actually feel. If you're tired of performing, people pleasing, or convincing everyone that you're okay when you're not, this conversation will help you reconnect with yourself and create more energetic alignment in your life. 🩵 Join the list for the next cohort of Calm AF Life Community In This Episode What energetic integrity actually means Why your energy always communicates the truth The disconnect between words and emotional energy How children naturally read energy and intuition Why pretending you're "fine" creates confusion and disconnection Teaching children to trust themselves and their instincts Emotional honesty and nervous system regulation Letting go of energy management and people pleasing The role of playfulness in emotional healing Why transformation doesn't have to be complicated How small shifts can create big changes in your emotional state Building trust through authenticity and consistency 🩵 Click HERE to hear more of Courtney's story and other Calm AF transformations. 🩵 Want daily nervous system support? • Client Story: The Messy Middle of Transformation, Divorce, & Learning to Trust Yourself 27.05.2026 18min
A few years ago, Courtney joined me on the podcast during the early stages of her Calm AF transformation. You can listen to that episode here. At the time, she had just returned from one of my retreats where she experienced a powerful future-self visualization that eventually led her to a completely different home and life. What we didn't fully talk about back then was that she also knew she needed to get divorced. In this follow-up conversation, Courtney shares what happened in the years between making that life-changing decision and fully stepping into the next version of herself. This episode explores the messy middle of personal transformation: the uncertainty, fear, nervous system dysregulation, relationship patterns, identity shifts, dating after divorce, and learning to trust yourself while everything around you changes. We talk about what healing actually looks like in real life, why transformation is rarely linear, and how consistent support, community, and nervous system work helped Courtney navigate divorce, motherhood, relationships, and rebuilding her identity over time. If you've ever felt stuck in limbo, afraid to trust yourself, or frustrated that healing doesn't happen instantly, this conversation will help you feel less alone. Because real transformation is not one breakthrough moment. It's learning how to keep showing up for yourself in the middle of the free fall. 🩵 Click HERE to hear more of Courtney's story and  more Calm AF transformations In This Episode What the "messy middle" of transformation really looks like Learning to trust yourself during divorce and major life changes Why healing and personal growth are not linear Nervous system regulation during uncertainty and transition Dating after divorce and recognizing old relationship patterns How community and consistent support change the healing process Letting go of perfectionism and survival patterns Identity shifts after divorce, motherhood, and major transitions Why transformation feels like "free fall" before stability returns The importance of continuing emotional regulation practices long term Click HERE to hear more of Courtney's story and other Calm AF transformations. 🩵 Want daily nervous system support?
