  • The Dark Side of GLP-1s No One Is Talking About 01.08.2026 1u 14min
Karen Martel grew up with a front row seat to diet culture most of us only felt secondhand. Her mom didn't just live it, she ran a weight loss center. Butter was called Vaseline. Popcorn was the enemy. And by her teenage years, Karen was deep in an eating disorder that would shape her relationship with food for decades. In this conversation, Karen gets honest about that history, and about something she still checks herself on today. Because here's the twist. We told ourselves we moved past the thin obsession. Body positivity was supposed to be the turning point. But somewhere in the last two years, that shift started reversing, and Karen has a theory about why. This episode goes places most conversations about GLP-1s and peptides don't go. What happens when a tool built to help women stop obsessing over food becomes another way to chase an old, dangerous ideal. Where the line sits between healing and harm. And why the doctors prescribing these medications may be the biggest blind spot in the entire conversation. If you have ever felt caught between wanting to feel good in your body and worrying that wanting it too much says something bad about you, this one is going to land differently. In This Episode, We Cover: How growing up around constant food restriction shapes the way we think about our bodies for life, even decades later The uncomfortable overlap between old school diet culture and today's biohacking and peptide obsession What it actually looks like when GLP-1 use crosses from health tool into disordered territory Why so many women are afraid to admit they still count calories or obsess over their weight The real conversation around microdosing, maintenance doses, and why more is not always better What doctors are missing when they prescribe peptides without any follow up program The connection between hormones, HRT timing, and whether you even need a peptide in the first place Why shame is the wrong response to someone using these tools, and what to offer instead The long term risks nobody is putting front and center, from bone loss to malnourishment Who This Episode Is For This episode is for the woman who has spent years managing a complicated relationship with food and her body, whether she calls it that or not. It is for anyone curious about GLP-1s and peptides who wants the real picture, not just the highlight reel from social media. And it is for the woman in midlife watching her body change in ways diet and exercise alone will not fix, who wants to understand her options without judgment.     Sponsors Timeline is offering up to 39% off your first order of Mitopure Gummies. • Beyond the Pepcid Claritin Trend: Real Solutions for PMDD and Progesterone Sensitivity with Dr. Liz Bartmen 25.07.2026 1u 10min
In part one, Dr. Liz Bartman and I broke down why PMDD happens: the histamine surges, the GABA receptor glitch, the progesterone metabolite that either calms you down or completely wrecks you depending on your unique biology. If you haven't listened to that one yet, start there, because this episode builds directly on it. Now we get into the part everyone actually wants to know: what do you do about it? We talk about why popular fixes like DAO supplements and strict low histamine diets usually fall short, and what to focus on instead, starting with your gut, your liver, and your nervous system. Dr. Liz walks through her actual clinical protocols, including specific nutrients, herbs, and the EndoAccess formulas she uses with patients who have histamine overload, progesterone sensitivity, or both. We also get into the harder conversations: when a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor might help women who are pushing too much allopregnanolone, what's really going on hormonally for women hitting perimenopause with worsening PMDD, and yes, when birth control or even an SSRI might actually be the safest, most compassionate choice, even for someone who leans natural. Dr. Liz makes a case that will challenge how you think about "first, do no harm." This episode is about giving you an actual roadmap, not just information. Because once you understand your own biology, from part one, you can finally stop guessing and start treating the right thing. In This Episode, We Cover: Why DAO supplements and strict low histamine diets usually don't solve the problem long term The gut, liver, and nervous system focused approach Dr. Liz uses first with patients Key nutrients and antioxidants for calming histamine and neuroinflammation, including glutathione support, sulforaphane, green tea, pomegranate, curcumin, NAC, and glycine Why alcohol is one of the biggest hidden disruptors of histamine clearance and hormone balance Specific probiotic strains, including lactobacillus plantarum, and their surprising role in GABA receptor expression The EndoAccess formulas Dr. Liz uses clinically for histamine support and for progesterone sensitive PMDD, including early results from a small group of patients What 5-alpha reductase inhibition is, how it relates to allopregnanolone, and when it may help Why perimenopausal women can suddenly develop worse PMDD, and the surprising role of testosterone, insulin, and FSH The honest conversation about birth control, newer options, and when it may be the safest choice for severe PMDD Where SSRIs fit in, including luteal phase only dosing and what to support alongside them Why the nervous system piece is the part most women skip, and why it may be the most important one Who This Episode Is For This is for women who now understand why they're struggling, from part one, and want an actual plan. It's for anyone who has tried supplements or progesterone with no luck and felt like they were out of options. It's especially for women in perimenopause noticing their PMDD or PMS getting dramatically worse, and for anyone who has felt conflicted about whether birth control or an SSRI could ever be the "right" choice for them.     Sponsors Join the Midlife Women's Peptide Program today and get started for less than $200 a month! • The Molecule Your Doctor Never Mentioned That Controls Your Libido, Energy, and Heart Health with Cathy Eason 21.07.2026 1u 7min
You've been told menopause is a hormonal transition. It's also a vascular one, and almost nobody is talking about it. In this episode, Karen sits back down with Cathy Eason, Chief Science Officer at Berkeley Life, for round two on a molecule most women have never heard of but should know by heart: nitric oxide. It is tiny, it is a gas, and it touches nearly every system in your body. When estrogen drops in perimenopause and menopause, nitric oxide production drops right along with it, and that decline may be quietly connected to your fatigue, your brain fog, your blood pressure, your blood sugar, and yes, your libido. Karen and Cathy get specific about the vascular side of midlife that rarely makes it into the conversation. That includes what nitric oxide has to do with responsive desire versus spontaneous desire, why heart disease risk climbs even in women who feel healthy, and what your labs might be trying to tell you before anything feels obviously wrong. Cathy also shares a personal story involving her spouse's vascular event that reframes how seriously women need to take this. This one connects a lot of dots. If you've ever felt like your energy, your desire, and your health markers were somehow all falling apart at once with no clear explanation, this episode is going to make a lot more sense of it. In This Episode, We Cover: What nitric oxide actually does in the body and why it touches nearly every organ system The direct link between declining estrogen and declining nitric oxide production Why fatigue is the number one reported symptom in perimenopause and menopause, and the physiological reason behind it How nitric oxide affects blood sugar, digestion, and insulin sensitivity The connection between nitric oxide, brain fog, mood, and sleep Why responsive desire is normal for most women, and what blood flow has to do with it What time of day your circulation actually peaks, and why that matters for sex The lifestyle habits quietly depleting your nitric oxide without you realizing it What labs and at-home tests can hint that you're running low A personal story about a spouse's vascular event and why women need to take heart health seriously now, not later Who This Episode Is For This episode is for the woman who has been chasing energy, sleep, and libido fixes without ever hearing about the blood flow piece. It's for anyone who has been told her labs are normal but she still doesn't feel like herself. It's especially relevant if you're on HRT and not getting the full results you expected, or if heart health has never really been on your radar because you don't have metabolic disease. If you've noticed cold hands, brain fog, low energy, or a sex drive that disappeared and you've been chalking it up to just getting older, this conversation is for you.     Sponsors TRY LMNT Ice tea: right now, you can get a free 8-count Sample Pack of their most popular flavors with any purchase at DrinkLMNT.com/KarenMartel Try the Estro 2 Rejuvention, skin care made for midlife women! • The Histamine Hack, PMDD, and Progesterone Sensitivity: What's Really Going On 18.07.2026 1u 1min
If you've been on social media lately, you've probably seen it: women swearing that a combo of Pepcid and Claritin, ordinary histamine blockers, gave them their life back during the worst days of their cycle. It sounds too simple to be real, and honestly, it kind of is. But the reason it's working for some women and doing absolutely nothing for others is the whole story, and it's a story almost nobody is explaining correctly. In this episode, I sit down with one of my all time favorite guests, Dr. Liz Bartman, to go deep into progesterone sensitivity, PMDD, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and how it's different from garden variety PMS. If you've ever felt like a completely different person for two weeks out of every month, only to feel like yourself again the second your period starts, this episode is going to make you feel seen in a way most conversations about "hormones" never do. We get into what's actually driving PMDD for so many women: an altered GABA receptor that stops responding correctly to a calming metabolite of progesterone called allopregnanolone. We talk about why histamine surges at exactly the wrong time in your cycle, how estrogen and progesterone are pulling the strings behind the scenes, and why some women feel like magic when they take progesterone while others feel like they've been poisoned by it. This is the foundational science you need before you try any protocol, viral or otherwise. This is part one of a two part series. Part two gets into what to actually do about it, but you need this piece first, because throwing supplements or medications at PMDD without understanding your own biology is how so many women end up frustrated and back at square one. In This Episode, We Cover: The real difference between PMS and PMDD, and why PMDD is classified as a mental health condition, not just a hormone imbalance Why normal estrogen and progesterone levels don't rule out PMDD, and what's actually going on in the brain instead What allopregnanolone is, how it works on GABA receptors, and why some women's brains stop responding to it correctly The viral H1/H2 histamine blocker protocol: what it is, why it can bring real relief, and why it isn't a PMDD cure-all The surprising role histamine plays as a neurotransmitter, including its connection to your morning cortisol response Why PMDD symptoms show up specifically in the second half of your cycle, and how estrogen, progesterone, and mast cells are all involved Why roughly half of women with diagnosed PMDD don't tolerate progesterone well, and what that tells us about the root cause How your gut microbiome, specific probiotic strains, and your nervous system state all influence GABA receptor expression and histamine regulation Why declining egg quality and corpus luteum function can cause progesterone to drop too fast in the luteal phase Who This Episode Is For This is for any woman who has ever felt like her brain and body get hijacked in the days before her period, and who has been told it's "just PMS" or that she's overreacting. It's for women who have tried progesterone and either felt amazing or felt so much worse, and never got a real explanation why. It's also for anyone who has seen the histamine blocker trend online and wants to understand the actual mechanism before trying it themselves.     Sponsors Join the Midlife Women's Peptide Program today and get started for less than $200 a month! • Quick Hits: Decoding Fibroids: Unmasking Causes & Effective Solutions 14.07.2026 17min
Welcome to Quick Hits — where we bring you the most impactful moments from past episodes in under 15 minutes. Today's clip comes from one of our most replayed conversations. If you want the full episode, check the link in the description below. Listen to the full episode. Download on iTunes. This weeks quick hit we are jumping right into a very important topic: uterine fibroids. Maybe you have experience with fibroids, or maybe you do not even really know what they are yet. Either way, this is a conversation every woman should understand. Fibroids are incredibly common. It is estimated that up to 75 to 80 percent of women may develop fibroids during their lifetime, and many women have them without even knowing they are there. They are also highly prevalent in perimenopause, which is when many women start noticing heavier periods, more pelvic pressure, more bloating, more pain, worsening PMS, and new urinary symptoms. In this episode, we go deep into what fibroids are, how they may impact your body and hormones, what symptoms to watch for, and what you can do to better understand, prevent, or reduce the growth of uterine fibroids. This is especially important because fibroids are not just a "period problem." They can affect bleeding, iron levels, fertility, pelvic pain, bladder symptoms, sex, and quality of life. And no, you should not have to just suffer through it because "that's normal for women." In This Episode, We Cover: What uterine fibroids are and why they are so common Which age group is most likely to be diagnosed with fibroids Why fibroids are especially common in perimenopause The hormones that influence fibroid growth Common signs and symptoms of uterine fibroids Where women may feel pain or pressure from fibroids How fibroids can affect periods, bleeding, fertility, and quality of life What to do if you think you may have fibroids Common urinary symptoms associated with fibroids Why painful intercourse may be a sign of fibroids Important contributing factors behind fibroid development and growth Which hormone fibroids are most sensitive to Why xenoestrogens may matter and how to reduce exposure Which vitamin may be important for fibroid prevention Why certain peptides may not be appropriate for women with a history of fibroids     Sponsors Try Mito Q Hormone and metabolic control. Code: MARTEL10     Are you in perimenopause or postmenopause and struggling with symptoms—but not getting the support you deserve? • Pellets, Periods, and Not Giving a Damn: A Midlife Hormone Roundtable with Dr. Amie Hornaman & Elle Russ 11.07.2026 1u 41min
This is not just a conversation about hormones. It is a conversation about what it means to age as a woman in a culture that is obsessed with youth, terrified of wrinkles, and wildly uncomfortable with female power after 40. In this roundtable episode, I sit down with Dr. Amy Horniman and Elle Russ to talk about the very real physical, emotional, and identity shifts that happen as women move through perimenopause and menopause. We get into everything from early perimenopause symptoms, thyroid issues, SHBG, testosterone, progesterone, estrogen, libido, vaginal dryness, hot flashes, pelvic floor changes, and how all of these things can affect the way women feel in their bodies. But we also go deeper into the emotional side of all of it. What happens when you are no longer getting the same attention? What happens when your face changes, your body changes, and you realize how much of your worth was tied to being seen as young or desirable? We also have a very honest conversation about hormone replacement therapy, why individualized care matters so much, why pellets are not always the answer, and why so many women are still being failed by outdated medical thinking. And from there, we talk about Botox, beauty standards, confidence, sex, self-worth, and why this stage of life can also be one of the most freeing. Because yes, aging is real. But so is wisdom. So is power. So is the version of yourself that finally stops asking for permission. In this episode, we cover: Early perimenopause signs and how differently they can show up for women How thyroid issues and elevated SHBG can affect sex hormones The difference between rhythmic and static hormone dosing Testosterone for women, including libido, muscle, mood, vaginal health, and pelvic floor support Why so many women struggle to get proper hormone support from conventional medicine The pros and cons of pellets versus creams and injections How aging affects confidence, sex drive, self-image, and identity Botox, beauty standards, and the pressure women feel to stay young Why women deserve to age on their own terms without shame How midlife can become a more authentic, confident, and powerful season of life Who this episode is for This episode is for women in perimenopause and menopause who are trying to understand what is happening to their hormones, their bodies, their libido, their confidence, and their sense of self. It is especially for women who are curious about HRT, frustrated by outdated medical advice, or wrestling with how to navigate aging in a way that feels empowering instead of defeating.   Dr. Amie Hornaman "The Thyroid-Fixer", is host to the top-rated podcast in medicine and alternative health: The Thyroid Fixer™, with listeners around the globe. • The Truth About Female Desire, Orgasms, and Sex That We Were Never Taught with Dr. Sally Greenwald 04.07.2026 1u 7min
If you've ever wondered why you don't want your husband to walk through the door and rip your clothes off anymore, this episode is for you. If you've ever quietly believed something was wrong with you because you don't orgasm easily, or at all, this episode is for you too. I sat down with Dr. Sally Greenwald, a board-certified OB/GYN with specialized training in menopause medicine, and what she shared genuinely stopped me in my tracks. We were taught to protect ourselves from pregnancy and disease. We were never taught how our bodies actually work. No one explained the difference between the desire that hits you out of nowhere and the desire that shows up once you're already in the moment. No one drew us a map of our own anatomy. No one told us what happens to any of it once perimenopause and menopause enter the picture. Dr. Greenwald walks us through the real data on desire, arousal, and orgasm. Why only a small percentage of women maintain the "spontaneous" desire we see on TV, and why that has nothing to do with being broken. What actually happens to your body hormonally and physically during this stage of life, and why so many women are quietly suffering through pain, dryness, or a total loss of interest without knowing there's a name for it and a way through it. We get into the anatomy no one taught us in school, the science behind why vibrators aren't just for fun anymore, and why scheduling sex might be the most underrated tool in your relationship. This conversation will change how you think about your own body. It might also make you a little angry about what you were never told. Both are fair. In This Episode, We Cover: The real difference between the desire you see in movies and the desire most women actually have Why so many women think something is wrong with them, and why they're wrong about that What's actually happening in your body during perimenopause and menopause that no one warned you about A simple way to figure out if your low desire is physical, psychological, or something else entirely The one belief about your sex drive that's holding you back more than any hormone ever could The anatomy lesson you should have gotten in school but never did Why one tool might change your entire experience of pleasure, and the science behind it The orgasm myth almost every woman believes, and what the data actually shows A surprisingly simple shift that can lower pressure and bring back intimacy Why sex might be doing more for your health than you realize This episode is for the woman who loves her partner but doesn't understand why she doesn't want sex anymore. It's for the woman who has never had an easy time reaching orgasm and has spent years quietly thinking that meant something was wrong with her. It's for anyone entering perimenopause or menopause and noticing changes in their body that no one prepared them for. And it's for every woman who is tired of comparing her real life to what she sees on a screen.     Sponsors Get 30% off BATCH Gummies. Go to hellobatch.com/HORMONE and use code HORMONE at checkout. • Part 3 The Midlife Stress Crash: What Your Midlife Breakdown Is Actually Trying to Tell You 27.06.2026 1u 3min
You've made it to part three, and this is the one that ties everything together. If parts one and two left you with a clearer picture of your stress system and your sleep, this episode takes you somewhere deeper: into your thyroid, your brain chemistry, and a layer of midlife that almost nobody talks about on a podcast about hormones. I'm breaking down why your thyroid and your adrenal system are locked in a relationship that most doctors never explain, and why a normal TSH does not mean your thyroid is actually working. Then we go into your neurotransmitters. Serotonin, dopamine, GABA, the gut connection. If you've ever wondered why you suddenly feel less resilient, less motivated, or like you don't know who you are anymore, this is the missing piece. And if you've been prescribed an antidepressant during perimenopause or menopause, I want you to hear this part especially. But this episode also goes somewhere I don't always go. We talk about the identity and spiritual layer of this transition. The old patterns, the buried feelings, the relationships and jobs that suddenly feel impossible to keep tolerating. I share something personal about what came up for me last year, and why I believe what feels like falling apart in midlife might actually be something else entirely. And because I know all of this can feel like a lot, I close the series with exactly where I'd start if I were you. What to test, what to ask for, and what I actually do every night for my own sleep. In This Episode, We Cover: Why a normal TSH result does not mean your thyroid is functioning properly The two way relationship between chronic stress, cortisol, and thyroid hormone conversion Why so many women are prescribed antidepressants in perimenopause and menopause when the real driver may be hormonal How estradiol affects serotonin (your sense of okay-ness) and dopamine (your motivation and drive) The role of progesterone and GABA in anxiety, racing thoughts, and the 2 to 4 AM wake up How chronic cortisol elevation disrupts neurotransmitter balance across the board Why 90 percent of your serotonin is made in your gut, not your brain The spiritual and identity layer of perimenopause and menopause, and why old patterns resurface now A personal story about a repeating pattern Karen had to finally face What Karen recommends first: the four point cortisol and DHEA test, and why it matters more than a single blood draw Karen's actual nightly routine for sleep, including HRT and magnesium Who This Episode Is For This one is for you if you have been told your labs are normal but you do not feel normal. It's for the woman who has been on an antidepressant for years and has quietly wondered if her hormones were ever part of the conversation. It's for anyone who feels more anxious, less motivated, or less like themselves than they used to, and cannot figure out why. And it's for the woman who feels like midlife is cracking something open in her, whether that shows up as a relationship that no longer fits, a job that drains her, or a feeling she cannot quite name yet.     Sponsors Timeline is offering up to 39% off your first order of Mitopure. • Why You Struggle to Build Muscle in Midlife (Even If You're Doing Everything Right) with Liz Plosser 23.06.2026 1u 16min
You're eating "pretty well." You're moving your body. So why does it feel like your muscle is disappearing and your effort isn't paying off the way it used to? In this episode, I sit down with Liz Plosser, former editor-in-chief of Women's Health and a woman who has spent her entire career reporting on health and fitness, to talk about what changes in midlife and why the old rules stop working. Then we go deep on amino acids, what they actually are, why your body becomes less efficient at using them as estrogen declines, and why an essential amino acid supplement might be one of the smartest, simplest things you can add to your routine. We also break down the real difference between amino acids and creatine, why BCAAs may not be worth your money, and how to build a stack that actually fits a real life, not a biohacker's spreadsheet. If you've ever felt like your body stopped responding to the things that used to work, this episode will explain why, and more importantly, what to do about it. In This Episode, We Cover: How perimenopause changed Liz's approach to fitness after decades as a cardio-focused marathoner Why muscle loss accelerates in midlife and what that means for your metabolism, strength, and aging The injury that led Liz to fall in love with strength training and chase a 280-pound deadlift PR Why it's okay to want to look strong, lean, and confident, not just "healthy" What essential amino acids are and why your body can't use protein without all nine Why women become less efficient at absorbing amino acids from food as estrogen declines The difference between amino acids and creatine, and why you likely need both Why branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) may not be worth the hype or the money New research on creatine and brain health, including higher doses on high-demand days How to build a simple, realistic daily protein and supplement routine, especially if you're on a GLP-1 Who This Episode Is For This episode is for the woman who feels like her body just isn't responding the way it used to, no matter how "right" she's doing things. It's for women in perimenopause and menopause who are confused about protein, curious about amino acids and creatine, or tired of conflicting advice from every corner of the internet. It's also for anyone on a GLP-1 medication who needs a realistic way to protect muscle while eating less. • Part 2 The Midlife Stress Crash: Why Midlife Women Wake Up at 3 AM and Can't Fall Back Asleep 20.06.2026 1u 9min
If you are exhausted all day, wired at night, and waking up between 2:00 and 4:00 AM with your heart pounding and your brain suddenly wide awake, this episode is for you. Because midlife sleep issues are rarely just about needing more progesterone or taking a melatonin gummy. They are usually a sign that a whole system is asking to be recalibrated. In this episode, I go deeper into the sleep side of the midlife stress puzzle and break down what may actually be happening beneath the surface. In this episode: Why so many women in midlife feel exhausted all day but wide awake at night Why progesterone can help sleep, but is not always the whole answer How oral progesterone works through allopregnanolone and the GABA system Why stress affects progesterone through disrupted ovulation, not "progesterone steal" How estradiol affects serotonin, dopamine, acetylcholine, and your circadian rhythm Why estrogen decline can destabilize sleep, mood, body temperature, and stress resilience How melatonin really works and why it is more than just a sleep supplement Why blood sugar drops can trigger cortisol and adrenaline spikes in the middle of the night What adrenaline wakeups feel like and why they are so common in midlife How to start becoming your own detective with sleep, stress, hormones, and testing Who this episode is for This episode is for women in perimenopause and menopause who are waking up between 2:00 and 4:00 AM, struggling to stay asleep, feeling anxious for no clear reason, or finding that the old sleep advice is no longer working. It is especially for women who want a deeper understanding of what is happening hormonally and neurologically, instead of being told to just take more progesterone and hope for the best.   Use coupon code SLEEP to get 20% off our Progest Sleep oil. • Part 1 The Midlife Stress Crash: Why You Feel Wired, Tired, Anxious & Done 13.06.2026 1u 9min
If you are waking up between 2:00 and 4:00 AM, lying there wide awake with your heart beating a little too fast and your mind solving every problem in your life, this episode is for you. Because this is not just about bad sleep. It is about what happens when the hormonal, adrenal, and nervous system shifts of midlife collide with the stress load most women are already carrying. And for a lot of women, this is the moment they stop feeling like themselves. In this episode, I do a deep dive into what is actually happening beneath the surface when women in perimenopause and menopause start feeling wired, tired, fragile, overwhelmed, anxious, and unable to recover the way they used to. We talk about the HPA axis, cortisol rhythm, DHEA, blood sugar, stress intolerance, adrenal strain, and why the advice women are getting online is often way too surface level to actually help. I also share what this has looked like in my own body, why midlife can feel like the season where your body stops tolerating the way you have been living, and why that is not a personal failure. It is physiology. This episode lays the foundation for understanding the deeper systems driving midlife sleep disruption and stress dysregulation, so you can stop blaming yourself and start getting clearer on what your body may actually need. In this episode, we cover: Why 2:00 to 4:00 AM wakeups are so common in perimenopause and menopause The difference between being tired and being hormonally and neurologically dysregulated What the HPA axis is and why it matters for stress and sleep How estrogen and progesterone affect stress resilience and recovery Why cortisol is not the enemy, but timing matters How cortisol dysregulation can affect sleep, anxiety, belly fat, and energy Why DHEA is one of the most overlooked hormones in midlife The connection between blood sugar drops and middle-of-the-night wakeups Why the old coping strategies stop working in midlife Why testing cortisol rhythm and DHEA can be so helpful Who this episode is for This episode is for women in perimenopause and menopause who are struggling with broken sleep, 3 AM wakeups, stress intolerance, fatigue, anxiety, feeling wired at night, crashing in the morning, or just feeling like they cannot handle life the way they used to. It is especially for women who want to understand the deeper physiology behind what is happening instead of being told to just relax, meditate, or take one supplement and hope for the best.   Get 15% off DHEA 10 mg capsules here. Listen to the full episode Listen to the full episode on iTunes If you have been told menopause is just hot flashes, aging, and something you have to "push through," this episode will challenge that entire narrative. In this episode, I sit down with Maria Claps and Kristin Johnson, the founders of Wise and Well and authors of The Great Menopause Myth. Maria is an FDN practitioner, and Kristin is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner board-certified in holistic nutrition. They are plainspoken friends, practitioners, and menopausal women themselves who are deeply passionate about helping women thrive in midlife. Maria and Kristin combine clinical experience, personal experience, nutrition, lifestyle strategies, lab testing, mindset coaching, and hormone replacement therapy education to help women understand what is really happening during perimenopause and menopause. In this conversation, we talk about why hormone health matters far beyond symptom relief. We discuss estrogen receptors, hormone replacement therapy, estradiol, estriol, cyclical progesterone dosing, hormone cycling, senescent cells, aging, brain health, vascular health, hair, joints, and the myths that continue to keep women confused and under-supported. This episode is for any woman who wants a more nuanced, educated, and honest conversation about menopause, HRT, bioidentical hormones, and what it means to truly age well. In The Full Episode, We Cover: Why hormone replacement therapy may impact overall health beyond hot flashes How estrogen receptors are found throughout the body, including areas like the eyes and ears Why optimal hormone levels may support hair, joints, brain health, vascular health, and quality of life How hormone cycling may better mimic the body's natural rhythms Why Maria and Kristin prefer cyclical progesterone dosing over static hormone dosing How static hormone dosing may contribute to breakthrough bleeding, water retention, or other unwanted symptoms Why estradiol is often misunderstood and feared despite its potential benefits How high doses of estriol may cause unwanted effects in some women Why topical progesterone may be helpful for women who do not tolerate oral progesterone well Why hormone health matters beyond symptom management How The Great Menopause Myth offers a different perspective on menopause and aging Why many women still receive inadequate medical support during menopause How misconceptions about hormone therapy can leave women isolated and misinformed Why more research is needed using bioidentical hormones How upcoming studies may compare traditional HRT to physiologic hormone restoration Why achieving hormone levels closer to a healthy younger woman may be beneficial for some women How proper hormone cycling may support lighter periods and fewer PMS symptoms Why the current narrative around menopause can hurt women     Sponsors Head to cozyearth.com and use my code HORMONES for 20% off sitewide! And if you get a Post-Purchase Survey, make sure to let them know you heard about Cozy Earth right here!     Are you in perimenopause or postmenopause and struggling with symptoms—but not getting the support you deserve? • JJ Virgin: The Untold Story of Aging, Weight Gain, HRT, Peptides, Facelifts, and Muscle 06.06.2026 1u 25min
This conversation is not just about menopause symptoms. It is about what it actually feels like to live inside a changing female body in midlife. The grief, the confusion, the vanity, the softness, the strength, the reinvention. All of it. In this episode, I sit down with fitness hall of famer, JJ Virgin for a real conversation about what happens when your body starts changing in ways you did not expect, the things that stop working, and how to hold onto yourself while also becoming someone new. We talk about the reality of perimenopause and menopause when you are living it, not just teaching it. JJ shares what her own transition looked like, from thyroid changes and hormone shifts to body composition changes and the shrinking margin for error that comes with midlife. We get into why so many women feel blindsided by weight gain, why muscle changes everything, why early hormone support matters, and why the old advice to just eat less and exercise more completely misses the point. We also go into the emotional side of aging that women do not talk about enough. The pressure to look good. The decision to use Botox, fillers, or surgery. The freedom that can come with getting older. The shift into caring less about pleasing everyone else. And we talk about practical tools too, from strength training to creatine, aminos, GLP-1s, thyroid support, and how to approach midlife in a way that is proactive, honest, and actually helpful. This is a conversation about aging on your terms, with more power, more honesty, and a lot less shame. In this episode, we cover: What JJ's own perimenopause and menopause transition looked like Why thyroid changes can show up early in perimenopause Why midlife weight gain is not just about calories The truth about weight loss resistance in menopause Why estrogen support matters earlier than most women are told Why muscle is one of the most important things to focus on in midlife The bare minimum strength training women need for health and longevity JJ's thoughts on Botox, facelifts, and aging on your own terms The role of GLP-1s in menopause weight gain and metabolic health Why creatine and amino acids may be game changers for midlife women Who this episode is for: This episode is for women in perimenopause and menopause who feel like their body is changing faster than they expected and they are trying to figure out what to do next. • The Brain Fog Fix No One Is Talking About: Nicotine, Methylene Blue and the Midlife Brain with Dr. Scott Scherr 30.05.2026 1u 13min
We talk a lot about hormones in midlife, hot flashes, weight gain, sleep issues, low libido. But one of the biggest complaints I hear from women is actually about their brain. The brain fog. The anxiety that comes out of nowhere. The flat motivation. The unpredictable sleep. The feeling that you just do not feel like yourself anymore. And for a lot of women, that is the part that feels the most unsettling. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Scott Sherr to go much deeper into what may actually be happening underneath those symptoms. We talk about mitochondria, brain energy, neurotransmitters, methylene blue, nitric oxide, GABA, glutamate, and even nicotine, and how all of these may play a role in the way the midlife brain feels and functions. This is one of those conversations that helps connect the dots between hormones and everything else that is happening in the brain and nervous system during this transition. If you have been feeling mentally flat, overstimulated, exhausted, or like your brain has changed in ways no one can fully explain, this conversation is going to open up a whole new lens on what may be going on. In this episode, we cover: Why brain fog is such a common midlife complaint What mitochondria actually are and why they matter for brain energy How estrogen loss may contribute to mitochondrial dysfunction How methylene blue may support mitochondria, energy production, and mental clarity The difference between low-dose and high-dose methylene blue use The truth about methylene blue and nitric oxide Why GABA, glutamate, progesterone, magnesium, and B6 matter for the midlife brain How stress and sympathetic overload affect mood, sleep, and focus Why nicotine is being explored for cognition, brain inflammation, and vagus nerve support Why HRT may help, but may not be the whole story for every woman Who this episode is for This episode is for women in perimenopause and menopause who are dealing with brain fog, anxiety, fatigue, poor motivation, sleep disruption, feeling overstimulated, or simply not feeling like themselves anymore. It is especially for women who want to understand what may be happening beyond hormones alone and are curious about the role of mitochondrial health, brain energy, and neurotransmitters in midlife symptoms.   Dr. Sherr is a board-certified internal medicine physician and a specialist in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. He's the COO of Troscriptions, a company developing physician-formulated buccal troches designed to support things like energy, focus, sleep, and stress resilience using compounds like methylene blue and other novel ingredients. • The Problem With 'I Did Menopause Naturally, So Should You' 23.05.2026 1u 1min
Menopause is finally having a moment, but with more conversation has come a whole lot more confusion. In this solo episode, Karen breaks down the three camps she sees in the menopause conversation: women who are informed and empowered, women who shame or dismiss HRT, and the large group of women who are still suffering without answers. This episode is a real, honest look at why women are still so confused about hormone replacement therapy, why "menopause is natural" is not the full story, and why every woman deserves education before making decisions about HRT. Karen also explains why HRT is not one-size-fits-all, why lifestyle matters but may not be enough for every woman, and why vaginal estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid, insulin, sleep, muscle, and metabolic health all deserve a place in the menopause conversation. In This Episode, We Cover: Why the menopause movement is growing, but women are still confused The three camps of women in the HRT conversation Why some women feel amazing on HRT while others are still scared of it The problem with saying "menopause is natural" as a reason to suffer Why lifestyle is foundational, but not always enough How misinformation keeps women afraid of hormone therapy Why HRT is not one thing The difference between systemic HRT and vaginal estrogen Why "normal labs" do not always mean optimal hormones Why women need better education, better providers, and better options This Episode Is For You If: You're confused about HRT. You've been told your menopause symptoms are "normal" but you don't feel normal. You're scared of hormone therapy but want to understand your options. You feel judged for choosing HRT, or judged for not choosing it. You want a more balanced, educated, and honest conversation about menopause, hormones, and women's health.     Sponsors Try Momentum and get a free Welcome Kit and Travel Collection ($70 value) with your order Order your LMNT electrolytes today and get a FREE 8 pack of samples!
