#43 How can pulp producers increase yield, and improve efficiency in cooking and the fiberline? 18.05.2026 18minCooking and fiberline processes are much like conducting an orchestra – dozens of variables must work in perfect harmony. Chip quality, liquor composition, time, temperature, washing efficiency, and bleaching stages all interact to make the final product. Traditionally, long manual test delays, raw material variability, and limited online measurements have forced mills to operate conservatively. Today, digitalization allows mills to replace guesswork with continuous, data-driven optimization. #42 ANDRITZ ATAD - Solving the TAD energy problem 22.04.2026 14minThe Through-air Drying (TAD) process has been well accepted across the tissue industry as a major breakthrough in terms of final product quality; however, the process is notoriously known for its excessive energy demands. #41 Can fiber quality, energy consumption and raw material efficiency be automated in panelboard production? 13.03.2026 20minPanelboard producers have a major challenge when balancing fiber quality, energy consumption, and raw material efficiency. Since 80% of the board is wood fiber, any small variation in fiber length or width has a huge impact on the final product. Traditionally, quality checks are done offline and intermittently, meaning operators had to rely on experience rather than data. The biggest challenge is how to gain visibility and control, knowing what’s happening in real time. To alleviate these challenges, ANDRITZ has developed MDFEye, an innovative measuring system that continuously analyzes fiber properties right after refining, using machine vision and data analytics to measure over 150,000 fibers per sample every few minutes right after the refining. When combined with ANDRITZ Advanced Process Controls (APC), MDFEye allows for closed-loop control of refining and drying processes, automatically adjusting parameters to maintain consistent quality and to optimize energy use. The results? Up to 10% of kWh per ton in energy savings, better internal bond prediction, and reduced glue and wood consumption, turning traditional MDF production into a smarter, more autonomous operation. #39 Can product uniformity be maintained in the production of nonwovens by automating the process? 02.12.2025 8minOne of the toughest challenges in the production of nonwovens is maintaining product uniformity at high speeds. Issues like the 'smile effect,' where fiber accumulates on the edges of the mat, lead to quality losses and wasted material. Producers are also under pressure to cut costs, save fiber, and reduce manual interventions, all while meeting sustainability goals such as lowering energy usage and emissions." The actual process of producing nonwovens can be described as similar to baking bread - but at industrial speed. Fiber mats have to be laid evenly, layer after layer, without clumping at the edges or thinning in the middle. Even a small imbalance can create wasted material, downtime, and product inconsistency. #30 What is the most simple and effective way to replace fossil fuels in the lime kiln? 18.02.2025 12minAn average lime kiln at a pulp mill will use up to 75 m3 of heavy oil to produce 450 t/d of burnt lime. This adds up to around 25,550 m3 of fossil fuel use per year. Some mills produce much more burnt lime, up to 1,000 t/d, which represents a significant cost in heavy oil use as well as adding to the mill’s CO2 emission penalties. It is now possible to completely replace fossil fuel burning in the lime kiln by using the LimeBio-Powder biofuel plant from ANDRITZ which powderizes various types of biomass. The powderized biomass is then fed into the lime kiln and is burnt in exactly the same way as heavy oil. The LimeBio-Powder biofuel plant can operate with various types of biomass including forest residues and pellets as well as waste wood and bark. Easy to install, and with a small footprint, the fully automated system can be integrated into a mill’s existing DCS’s or ANDRITZ automation and digitalization solutions. #29 What were the challenges and solutions provided for the successful start-up of UPM’s Paso de los Toros pulp mill? 18.11.2024 23minThe mill is set to produce up to 2.1 million tons per year of high-quality eucalyptus pulp. It is deeply impressive that such a large production site operates unobtrusively and almost silently in the middle of Uruguayan cattle ranching country. Clearly, sustainability and protection of the environment at the mill is a No. 1 priority for UPM. The Paso de los Toros mill is the second of UPM’s pulp mills to be built in Uruguay, the first one, Fray Bentos, was started up 15 years ago. Due to the enormous success with the Fray Bentos mill, ANDRITZ was chosen once again as a turnkey supplier for UPM's second mill. #28 How did ANDRITZ tackle the challenge of building two world-leading mills, pulp and tissue, side by side for Bracell? 09.10.2024 17minThe request from Royal Golden Eagle (RGE) owner of Bracell in Brazil was a tough one; to build the world’s largest and greenest pulp mill in the world, and then further, to build a tissue mill right next to the pulp mill located at Lençóis Paulista, São Paulo state, Brazil. And there was more; The pulp mill, Project STAR, would need to switch quickly between kraft and dissolving pulp as the markets demanded. ANDRITZ took on the challenge and delivered the complete scope of supply including a complete wood processing plant, the world’s largest HERB recovery boiler, two hardwood fiberlines, two pulp drying lines and the world’s largest non-condensable gas treatment system, focusing on the use of side streams in the recovery cycle. For Project Tissue ANDRITZ delivered the complete scope of supply on an EPCC basis including four PrimeLine Tissue Machines. Project Tissue represents one of the largest of its kind in the world and is the largest order ANDRITZ has received for its tissue technology. #24 Improved efficiency means a lower carbon footprint. How can this be achieved in the white liquor plant? 19.03.2024 16minImproved efficiency leads to less overall energy use which in turn means the lowering of carbon footprint. In the search for improvements in white liquor plant operations ANDRITZ has developed a uniquely simplified and ultimately more efficient technology, LimeDry-H, for improved lime mud feeding. The LimeDry-H system has seen a number of improvements including the implementing of a hollow central shaft (which means no vacuum tank is required), central shaft axial movement, a better precoat renewal system and improved maintainability. The new system also has the option for the latest in ANDRITZ autonomous white liquor plant solutions. The improvements to the new system have resulted in a more homogeneous lime mud feed to the lime kiln. This means more efficient drying resulting in the decreasing of emissions across the whole process. Additionally there are water savings of up to 60%.
