The pool everyone needs is getting bigger — and more concentrated — 9 September 2026 09.09.2026 7minThe world’s 300 largest pension funds ended last year with a record $27.7 trillion, and the top 20 held $11.9 trillion of it. Around that increasingly concentrated pool: India’s sovereign-anchored NIIF hires a Global Head of Capital Formation; Indonesia moves a railway’s debt off its sovereign fund for zero consideration at an unpublished rate; Britain pays its highest 30-year yield since 1998 while planning a smaller long-dated programme; and two pension funds sell a decade-old infrastructure holding without disclosing a number. What You Can’t See, You Can’t Exclude — 8 September 2026 08.09.2026 6minNN Group told Universal Asset Owners, on the record, why a coal revenue threshold can miss a large coal producer and what its policy now tests: annual production of 10 million tons or more, 5 GW of coal-fired capacity, or any new mine or plant, beside the revenue tests. The SEC asked a federal court to compel ISS to produce a client-identified record of how each client's shares were voted — an application, not a finding. Argentina's Decree 868/2026 turned a resource-title dispute into a sworn declaration every hydrocarbon permit and RIGI applicant must sign. Three rules, three institutions, one question: is the rule real, or is it a document? Full brief: https://www.universalassetowners.com/intelligence/ -
Extended Listen — Monday, September 7, 2026: What Japan’s reserve data actually says 07.09.2026 4minA longer look at the two stories underneath today's brief: the composition of Japan's record reserve fall — foreign securities down $87.8bn against a $79.6bn total — and why Korea's National Pension Service suspending FX hedging matters more than its size suggests. -

Permission Is Not Proof — 5 September 2026 05.09.2026 7minFour of today's biggest stories in global capital share one feature: somebody granted permission, and nothing moved. Norway's fund manager proposes cutting its government-bond benchmark from 70% to 50%, implying close to $80bn less in Treasuries — while total dollar exposure barely changes. Chinese rare-earth suppliers decline US shipments while holding valid export licences. S&P calls a Senegalese distressed exchange extremely likely, alongside an IMF staff-level agreement rather than after it. And two regulators clear two enormous offerings that have raised nothing. Permission is not proof. -

Norway accepts the concentration it cannot easily hedge 03.09.2026 9minNorges Bank has told Norway's government not to cap the largest companies, sectors or markets in the Government Pension Fund Global. Concentration, it says, must be accepted as a feature of a market-weighted index — and it uses the words "at this time". In this episode: why the stress tests do not price that decision (there is no capped index in them to compare against); what the cap back-tests in the appendix actually show — 8.80% a year uncapped since 1994, 8.71% with a 1% company cap, 8.82% with a 3% cap; the second letter, which cuts government bonds from 70% of the bond benchmark to 50% and adds agency mortgage-backed securities; and the reason a defined-benefit pension fund should not copy any of it. Why a central bank's eligibility list is a price signal for everyone who holds the same paper. Also: the day Hormuz strikes met a 3% JGB and the market sold duration, not safety; CPP's week of repeat-relationship commitments; SB Energy's $439bn backlog; and Nicolai Tangen on whether the fund could disappear. Britain bought the mine. It did not buy the tungsten. 26.08.2026 8minBritain's National Wealth Fund agreed terms on a package of up to GBP 71 million for Tungsten West, the company restarting the Hemerdon mine in Devon: GBP 36 million of conditional equity for about 7.42 per cent of the enlarged voting capital, a proposed GBP 25 million facility at SONIA plus 5.5 percentage points rising a point a quarter, a board seat and a twelve-month veto. On the metal itself it received a limited period in which to negotiate. No offtake has been signed. The same shape appeared twice more on Tuesday. Wilton Re, owned by CPP Investments, will establish Windsor Life Re to assume an initial US$1.7 billion block of American life liabilities, with SLC Management as lead asset manager. Private Markets’ New Bargain: Less Voice, Limited Exit 25.08.2026 5minAn interval fund has asked the SEC to let it hire, fire and re-price its managers without a shareholder vote — including affiliated ones. In exchange, shareholders would get the right to leave first. That trade is only as good as the exit, and last quarter the non-traded BDC market met 38% of the dollars investors asked to have back. Plus: the FCA on the £567bn SIPP market, Norway's suspended exclusion machinery, and a 50% tariff with no legal instrument behind it.
