After all, the Christmas story in the Bible is very brief, so delving into these unofficial texts reveals colourful extra details.   Where does the Grim Reaper come from? Who is this skeletal incarnation of death really? In this video we’ll explore the origins of the Grim Reaper. A journey that takes us from ancient deities/archetypes of mortality all the way to history’s worst pandemic, the Black Death, the ghoulish environment from which the grim reaper (as we now know it) surfaced. Uploaded 30-08-20You may be surprised to know that the Grim Reaper isn’t actually mentioned in the Bible, and whilst there are descriptions of angels of death and apocalyptic horsemen that seem similar, it may be largely superficial. Let me know your thoughts though. Perhaps the Grim Reaper originally developed from figures from European folklore, especially the Ankou which comes from Celtic Mythology (Cornish and Breton to be exact). These figures synthesised with an increased number of images of death in medieval paintings post Black Death, in a movement known as the Danse Macabre.   "The Pickle King of Tartary" is a strange footnote in the often-turbulent history of central Asia. His real name was Khalid Sheldrake, a pickle manufacturer from London, and during the Chinese civil war he nearly became the king of Xinjiang and the Uyghur people. It's one of those obscure topics that deserve more attention...Uploaded 28-01-22His moniker has an amusing ring to it, and when I first heard about this story thought that I’d be making a light-hearted video. But I think it’s more complex than that. And I suspect depending on your own life experiences, you’ll react to it in a number of ways. You might see Khalid Sheldrake as the charitable philanthropist and a patron of Britain’s Muslim communities. But you might also see it as a story of empires and colonies, and a naïve man at the centre of it. What's more, you may be reminded of the ongoing accusations coming out of Xinjiang and the alleged maltreatment of the Uyghur people.
