  • Community Ownership in Circular Supply Chains: The Cooperative Model | CSCC Series Finale (5/5) 20.09.2026 20min
This is the series finale. Across five episodes, the Circular Supply Chain Coalition series has built the system around circular supply chains: coalition architecture, trusted networks, buyer-operator alignment, enabling policy. Episode 5 asks who owns the infrastructure, who has agency, and who benefits when reverse supply chains are built.Deirdre White is CEO of Pyxera Global with nearly 40 years in supply chain development and social impact, from oil and gas localization on Sakhalin Island in the Russian Far East to the Jiva program, a 10-year partnership with the John Deere Foundation in rural Rajasthan that transformed agricultural livelihoods, girls' education, and community governance. Deirdre frames community ownership as the opposite of extraction: local people building and retaining the assets that should be theirs.Nancy Charaya leads circular economy work at Pyxera Global India, with a decade of experience across tire, textile, plastics, and critical minerals value chains. Nancy built the Pride Cooperative in Guwahati, Assam, a female-led waste worker collective organizing 160 informal workers into a cooperative with collective bargaining power and shared governance. India has 4 to 5 million waste workers, up to 80 percent women working informally with zero agency. The cooperative model gives them a seat at the table.John Holm, SVP of Partnership Development at Pyxera Global, moderates and connects the five-episode arc, framing community ownership as the "Trojan horse" for circular supply chains at scale.Chapter Markers:0:00 Introduction: from enabling policy to community ownership1:05 John Holm: community benefit as the missing layer in circular supply chains2:03 Deirdre White: 40 years of supply chain localization, from Sakhalin to CSCC5:41 Jiva: 10 years with John Deere in rural Rajasthan7:08 Why the changes held two years after the program ended7:54 "Fall in love with the problem, not the solution"8:25 India's waste sector: 4-5 million workers, 90% informal, 60-80% women9:27 Pride Cooperative: 160 waste workers, collective bargaining, government access10:26 The smart dustbin story: waste worker knowledge vs. high-tech design11:21 Cooperatives in the global north: Land O'Lakes and hidden scale12:37 Community-owned business: keeping equity local in reverse supply chains14:44 Building trust: 36 person-weeks of listening in three villages16:11 Pride as a female-led cooperative: agency and collective voice17:15 Lightning round: misconceptions, capabilities, optimism19:34 Series close: the complete blueprint for a circular economyKey Topics:Community ownership, cooperatives, circular supply chains, reverse logistics, waste workers, informal economy, critical minerals, cooperative governance, Pyxera Global, CSCC, Pride Cooperative, Guwahati, MSMEs, female-led enterprise, global south innovationConnect and Learn More:Circular Supply Chain Coalition: circularsupplychain.orgPyxera Global: pyxeraglobal.orgJohn Holm: [email protected] White: linkedin.com/in/deirdre-whiteNancy Charaya: linkedin.com/in/nancycharayaSheri Hinish (Supply Chain Queen): supplychainqueen.comPlease subscribe and follow
  • Circular Economy Policy: How New Mexico and the EU Are Building Reverse Supply Chains | CSCC (4/5) 13.09.2026 23min
Circular supply chains do not scale on corporate pilots alone. They require enabling policy: state-level incentives, workforce alignment, environmental regulation, capital pathways, and cross-border investment structures that make reuse-based business models viable. This is episode four of a five-part series with Pyxera Global and the Circular Supply Chain Coalition, exploring what the enabling environment looks like when policy moves from aspiration to implementation.Secretary James Kenney leads the New Mexico Environment Department, where he has built one of the most ambitious state-level circular economy strategies in the US. Under Governor Lujan Grisham, New Mexico offers free education from pre-K through university and trade school, universal child care, a 50-year water action plan backed by $400 million in annual investment, and PFAS legislation that listed discarded PFAS as hazardous waste with a consumer-facing label accessible to every New Mexican. The department created economic development positions whose only metric is jobs created and net income generated.Manuel Carmona Yebra is Deputy Head for Global Issues and Innovation at the EU Delegation to the United States. He has led EU-US circular economy engagement at the state level, engaging governors including Governor Wes Moore (Maryland), Governor Hobbs (Arizona), and Governor Lujan Grisham (New Mexico). His work has revealed that circular economy is bipartisan because it addresses economic development, environmental protection, employment, and supply chain security simultaneously.John Holm, SVP of Partnership Development at Pyxera Global and CSCC representative, frames the enabling environment strategy and explains why the coalition focuses on governor-level alignment rather than federal solutions. Together they unpack why states are laboratories for policy that scales and why the EU Circular Economy Act is expected to require 25% of critical minerals supply from recycling.Chapters:0:00 Introduction: the enabling environment1:00 John Holm: enabling environment in practice1:33 Security economy framing2:38 Why CSCC focuses on states and governors3:42 Secretary Kenney: New Mexico's model4:45 Free education, child care, workforce transition5:46 50-year water action plan6:19 Waste to marketplace: critical minerals7:48 PFAS legislation and the consumer label9:25 Consumer access to information about PFAS10:08 Secretary Kenney on trade association lawsuits11:12 EU Circular Economy Act and competitiveness12:26 25% of EU critical minerals from recycling13:04 EU-US state engagement14:18 Why the EU engages US states directly15:04 Circular economy as bipartisan17:48 Replicability and interstate symbiosis19:55 Sovereign supply chains, Mexico border corridor21:01 How to engageTopics: Circular economy policy, PFAS, EU Circular Economy Act, critical minerals, economic development, workforce transition, bipartisan policy, reverse supply chainConnect:New Mexico Environment Department: env.nm.govManuel Carmona Yebra: linkedin.com/in/manoloCSCC: circularsupplychain.orgPyxera Global: pyxeraglobal.orgJohn Holm: [email protected] Chain Queen: supplychainqueen.comSubscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and wherever you listen.
  • Circular Sourcing & Procurement: Critical Minerals Recovery w/ ABTC and Cummins | CSCC Series (3/5) 04.09.2026 23min
This is episode three of a five-part series produced in partnership with Pyxera Global and the Circular Supply Chain Coalition. Recovering a material is only the beginning. For circular supply chains to scale, operators must understand what buyers can qualify and use, while buyers must create credible demand signals and procurement pathways for secondary materials. This episode covers the matchmaking layer: how the CSCC connects reverse supply chain operators with industrial buyers.Ryan Melsert is the co-founder and CTO of American Battery Technology Company (ABTC), which operates a battery recycling facility selling approximately one thousand tons per month of critical minerals back into the market. Ryan's career spans Tesla (where he helped design and build the first gigafactory) and the company is now BASF's exclusive battery recycling partner for all of North America. Rafael Vasquez Lombardo leads sustainability strategy and customer solutions at Cummins, a 100+ year industrial manufacturer with global remanufacturing operations. Anita Schwartz returns as CSCC co-founder.Together they unpack what it takes to move from collecting battery feedstock to producing materials that industrial buyers can evaluate, qualify, and integrate into established supply chains. Rafael outlines the performance-cost-trust triangle that governs sourcing decisions at scale, and Ryan explains why the qualification process will never get shorter (consumers demand zero tolerance for component failure). They close with a lightning round where Rafael delivers the episode's defining line: stop talking about circular sourcing, this is just sourcing.Chapter Markers:0:05 Introduction: buyer-operator matchmaking in reverse supply chains1:19 Meet Anita Schwartz (CSCC co-founder)2:06 Meet Ryan Melsert (ABTC): Tesla, gigafactory, battery recycling3:47 Meet Rafael Vasquez Lombardo (Cummins): engineering to circular economy strategy6:33 From convening to active matchmaking: what changes7:50 Operator perspective: from feedstock to buyer-ready supply9:10 BASF partnership: becoming their exclusive North American battery recycling partner10:51 Buyer perspective from Cummins: performance, cost, trust15:04 After the introduction: what happens day-to-day16:59 Data exchanges, audits, and the high-trust environment17:33 Validation steps from pilot to production20:07 Lightning round: what to stop, what data matters, optimismKey Topics: Reverse supply chain, buyer-operator matchmaking, battery recycling, critical minerals, Cummins, ABTC, BASF, circular procurement, secondary materials, supply chain qualification, remanufacturing, performance specs, supply chain trust, CSCC, Pyxera GlobalConnect and Learn More:American Battery Technology Company: americanbatterytechnology.comCummins: cummins.comCSCC: circularsupplychain.orgPyxera Global: pyxeraglobal.orgSheri Hinish: supplychainqueen.com
  • Exploring Supply Chain Resilience in Navigating COVID and Beyond & The Wicked Debate of Sustainability Versus Circular Economy w/ James George of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation 26.07.2020 16min
We are facing unprecedented social, economic, and environmental crises. We've lost many lives to COVID and as unemployment reaches new highs, businesses and supply chains must navigate a new, never normal world. The business as usual operating model of globalization versus localized/shorter supply chains, lowest price versus value, opportunity versus obligation has created the status quo. Is incremental improvement or doing things "less bad" actually helping or hurting business and our planet? How do we connect the dots and show leadership during crisis using circularity? In Episode 27, James George from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation discusses that COVID has accelerated conversations for circular economy. Two distinct groups are emerging: 1) those who've been disrupted and don't know where to go or where to start, and 2) the businesses who are successful are prioritizing doing things differently, innovation, doubling down on circular economy grounded in the business case for change including agility, supply assurance, and designing risk out of your supply chain. Supply chain resilience is critical and how do you ensure the right work gets done? Lastly, we debate how sustainability and circularity may not exist in the same sentence. Is optimizing for "less bad" the right pivot to navigate COVID and beyond? How do you get started? • Building the Future of Supply Chain with the SDGs, Climate Action, Circular Economy, and the Convergence of Tech with Digital Strategist Anthony Day 12.02.2021 38min
Traditionally, supply chains are one directional, linear and strive for incremental improvements. But through the lens of blockchain + sustainability + circularity, supply chains truly become an ecosystem with endless possibilities, connections, collaboration in an ocean of abundance, as opposed to closed, point to point processes. Think open. Think ecosystem, don’t think closed and incremental.  Join host Sheri Hinish (SupplyChainQueen) and Anthony Day (IBM Blockchain Partner and host of the podcast "Blockchain Won't Save the World) as they unpack how to build supply chain of the future that transform the world we share. Topics discussed include: -The convergence of technology and 8 themes that when used in concert with the SDGs can change the world -Creating transformational social impact with blockchain including climate action, sustainable supply chains, micro-financing, and renewable energy transition -Socio-economic and earth system trends in the great acceleration within planetary boundaries; what we do has a direct impact on Earth systems especially our climate and oceans. Population and energy use are growing exponentially. If we don’t reverse these Earth system trends in a on-linear way. -Moving from a scarcity to an abundance mindset as we transition to a circular economy. A scarcity mindset is closed and can lead to fear, not stepping out and up to the challenges our generation faces to address the climate emergency and collapse of biodiversity. An abundance mindset is critical in how you show up and embody transformation in the world we share.   -Data leads to the ability to educate the population on how to make an impact. How do we get more access to capital to transition to renewable energy? How can we open up a market to provide financial collateral in exchange for kilowatts? Blockchain enables this + carbon credits and trading, tokenizing through cryptocurrency also. Project Drawdown explores how to reduce carbon impact like adopting solar and wind renewable energy, reducing refrigeration, food waste, educating girls, and family planning.  -AI , Blockchain, IoT use cases in cold chain, fold supply chain track and trace. IBM Partner Food Cloud and reducing food waste reduction in PLCM. -Anthony chats about why aren’ these amazing ideas scaling? Desirability, technical feasibility, viable from a commercial case, the business case... • Supply Chain Career Growth: How to Build Community, AI Skills, and Confidence with Liz Raman, Supply Chain Gals Founder | Forbes 30 Under 30 13.07.2026 11min
Supply chain is no longer a hidden career path. It is where strategy, technology, operations, consumer behavior, product management, data analytics, and resilience meet. In this episode of the Supply Chain Revolution podcast, Sheri Hinish sits down with Liz Raman, founder and CEO of Supply Chain Gals, Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree (Transportation and Mobility, 2025), MIT and Georgia Tech alum, and senior product manager in tech. Liz built Supply Chain Gals because the community she needed early in her career did not exist. Starting as a transportation analyst, she navigated her way to becoming one of the youngest supply chain directors at Nike by age 26, ran a multibillion-dollar third-party sales division at Amazon, and founded a 501(c)(3) nonprofit professional network that now connects over 20,000 women across career stages through workshops, mentorship circles, networking nights, case competitions, and a Slack-based membership with 120+ active members. Together, they explore why supply chain is the ultimate connector career for professionals who get bored easily and love learning new things, how Supply Chain Gals is building AI and technology fluency through hands-on workshops with leaders from Microsoft and Accenture, why community is career infrastructure (not just a nice-to-have), and how case competitions simulate executive-level decision-making that early-career professionals rarely get to experience. • A World Without Waste Using AI + Better Math for Circular Supply Chains with Steve Pratt (CEO, Noodle AI) 15.04.2023 36min
Earth Month Exclusive featuring Steve Pratt (CEO of Noodle Al, Co-Founder of Infosys and Regenerative Ranch aficionado) + Supply Chain Revolution podcast to explore how better math and Al can enable circularity in a new supply chain planning paradigm. The way supply chain planning has been done for the last 30 years has been under the assumption that computers were slow and data was expensive, and so they needed to make a lot of simplifying assumptions.. Very importantly, they ignore probabilities and complex pattern recognition that are all allowed by this more advanced mathematics. To Learn more about Steve - visit https://noodle.ai/ or https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephen-pratt-094b5916/ Circular economy is increasingly recognized as a better alternative to the dominant linear (take, make, and dispose) economic model. Circular Supply Chain Management (CSCM), which integrates the philosophy of the circular economy into supply chain management, offers a new and compelling perspective to the supply chain sustainability domain. Two aspects that make a CSCM unique: 1) its restorative and regenerative cycles designed based on circular thinking; 2) the vision of a zero-waste economy that is inherent in the CE philosophy. This is CEO Steve Pratt + Noodle AI's mission - to build and design a world without waste. Steve also walks the talk as a farmer and student of nature, where he brings inspiration like the Noodle culture mantra BCHILL, and planting seeds of innovation for long-term value creation. Steve is an O.G. Rebel and friend of the podcast, one of the original supporters. He is an incredible technical background and at every turn has pushed boundaries with tenacity and a 'people and planet first' north star. His journey in consulting started at Deloitte. He went on to start Infosys, had a brief stint at IBM, then founded Noodle with a lingering nudge 'there has to be a better way' and a vision of a world where nothing is wasted where technical, natural, and human systems exist in harmony. About Noodle: Noodle.ai software uses some of the most advanced math on the planet to tame global supply chain chaos—so the right stuff gets to the right place at the right time with less drama. More importantly, Noodle's 'Value at Risk' shows you the hard money costs of each of the millions of errors made by your planning stack, for both demand and supply, across raw materials, production, and distribution. This episode is packed full of lessons in big transformation, inspirational messages, and pragmatic reasons why circular supply chains provide the conduit for marrying the environmental, social, and economic benefits for change. Sectors and client examples highlighted are from CPG, Industrial and automotive. Everything we need exists NOW to build and empower better decisions for a circular and inclusive world.

  • Exploring Pet Sustainability & Impacts, Pet Ownership & Social Justice, and How Pets Are A Bridge Back to Nature w/ Melissa Bauer (Pet Sustainability Coalition) 12.10.2020 19min
Did you know that if you add up the cats and dogs in the United States, they’d represent the 5th largest population of protein consumption in the world? When it comes to pet supply chains and sustainability, there is typically 1 sector called "pet services and products”. This one sector, encompasses dozens of other industries that have many categories in human supply chains. For example, apparel, food, medicine, and healthy/beauty are considered dramatically different industries in the human world, but we buy good and services for our pets in all those areas and more.  The environmental impact of the pet sector is huge. Did you know that 300 million pounds of packaging is sent to land fill each year? Finally, the pet industry has often overlooked and serious social sustainability challenges as well. Pet ownership has been directly linked to home ownership, but with systematic racist policies historically making home ownership out of reach for communities of color, what are the Justice, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion implications of the industry itself? Why aren’t people aware or talking about this?  In Episode 40, Sheri Hinish discusses massive opportunities in pet sustainability, in caring differently for our furry friends, with MelissaBauer from the Pet Sustainability Coalition. PSC has a super cool origin story starting with Chris Bentley. A lover of life and an environmentalist at heart, Chris Bentley has spent several decades looking for ways to minimize his environmental footprint. Based in Colorado, Chris was active in the entrepreneurial business community where he saw the Natural Foods movement adopt Organic Certification and the Outdoor Industry collaborate to build innovative sustainability tools. With over 25 years of success in the pet products industry, first with Aspen Pet and then with Only Natural Pet and “I and Love and You,” he knew there was an opportunity to drive impact in an industry he had grown to know and love. Together with fellow sustainable business leader Marty Grosjean at Only Natural Pet, Chris partnered with sustainability icon Hunter Lovins at Natural Capitalism Solutions to develop a suite of sustainability tools that could provide their respective companies the resources they needed to implement sustainable business processes. The outcome of this project was a world class toolkit built by Natural Capitalism Solutions that had far reaching potential. The new vision for these tools was to serve as a transformative catalyst that would enable the entire pet industry to engage more positively with the environment and communities where they do business. When complete, Chris, Natural Capitalism Solutions, the Outdoor Industry Association, and 25 business leaders met at Global Pet Expo 2013 where they formed a new nonprofit collaborative that would share tools and resources to encourage adoption of sustainable business practices. KD Frueh at KONG Company, Tony de Vos at Cardinal Pet Care, Jim Thomas at Petco, Spencer Williams at West Paw, Stephanie Volo at Planet Dog, and Aaron Lambstein at Worldwise joined Only Natural Pet and I and Love and You to become Founding Members of the Pet Sustainability Coalition. These 8 Founding Members continued to make large financial contributions for five consecutive years that served as the Coalition’s primary revenue and lifeblood! The decisions we make this decade are the most important in human history. You have to ask yourself: if our economic system actively destroys the biosphere and fails to meet many people's basic needs, what actually the point of it all? With COP26 weeks away, answering the call in climate action and equity for all, how will we emerge and redesign our world, our systems, supply chains, and economies? In episode 62, Sheri Hinish (SupplyChainQueen) explores key themes in our world's transformation with two thought leaders - Mark Perera (Founder of Procurement Leaders and CEO of Vizibl) + Peter Smith (CIPS and the epic OG of Procurement, literally). Mark and Peter have authored a new, provocative book called 'Procurement with Purpose' and encourage everyone to look deep in your supply chain to make a world of difference. (https://www.procurementwithpurpose.com/) Procurement with Purpose describes a powerful new movement - how organizations can use the money they spend with suppliers to help address these issues. That “buying power” is now being used to drive change across the business world.  Mark and Peter share case studies from firms including Unilever and Bayer that have taken the lead in Procurement with Purpose, as well as good practice advice on implementing these ideas  at all stages of the buying cycle. We unpack supplier diversity, and development. and insightful analysis of  “purposeful business” concepts and describe the key environmental, social and economic issues that can be addressed through these approaches.  Both an inspirational call to action, and a practical guide to implementing real change, Procurement with Purpose suggests that we can still change the world for the better thru disruptive thinking and disrupting incrementalism in sustainable transformation. Pre-order your copy here (https://www.procurementwithpurpose.com/) All profits from the book will go to support environmental, social and health charities.  The mystery of human existence lies in finding something to live for; what wakes you up each morning? • The Future of Work in Supply Chain, Exponential Technology, AI, and Chat GPT with Dr. Yossi Sheffi (MIT, Author) 10.09.2023 29min
In Episode 77, Dr. Yossi Sheffi, iconic thought leader and professor at MIT, innovator, and author of a new book ‘ The Magic Conveyor Belt’ chats with host Sheri Hinish about the future of supply chain including the people, exponential technology, and disruptive themes that will shape the future of the profession. This book offers explanations to pressing supply chain topics and much more, with historical perspectives and modern examples. It covers contemporary issues of outsourcing and re-shoring, sustainability, resilience, regulations and the social, managerial, and policy issues resulting from technological innovations. Additional topics covered in this episode include: how tech adoption has shaped and helped humanity, how technology has repurposed jobs, the digital divide, the impact of AI and ChatGPT on the future of work and automation, and freeform flow on sustainability, quantum, nuclear, and many other political, provocative topics! In the Magic Conveyor Belt, Professor Sheffi lays the foundation for understanding supply chains and the characteristics that make them complex. In Part 1 of the book “The Global Dance,” he delves into the often-hidden intrinsic structure of supply chains to ground the reader in the challenges of managing the mammoth networks involved. Part 2, “Further Complexity and Challenges,” shows how the last 50 years have added even more complexity to supply chains. This part covers the rising demand for goods, as well as the increasing consumer expectations for fast, perfect delivery services. The relevance on technology creates a sobering thought around the digital divide. The digital divide is multifaceted and includes many factors such as access, affordability, quality, and relevance. As Michael Kende wrote, “the digital divide is not a binary.” These gaps in availability, affordability, interest, and digital literacy. The UN’s Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development estimates that nearly 3.6 billion people remain totally unconnected to the Internet by any measure. This means there are around 4.1 billion people online, about 53.6% of the global population.  What does the future hold for global supply chains and countries, economies, marginalized communities left behind in a technology infused world?  The capabilities and future roles of automation, robotics, and artificial intelligence are changing and augmenting the jobs held by workers—covered in Parts 3 and 4. Elements of the book trace the implications of multiple trends in the operating environment for tomorrow’s global supply chains, as they change and augment the jobs held by workers. While many of the new skills require technical knowhow, it is social skills, ironically, that may be a key for future human employment in an economy dominated by technology. • The State of Sustainable Apparel: What North America Needs to Know with Christine Goulay | Innovation Forum Partnership 11.05.2026 22min
In this episode of the Supply Chain Revolution podcast, produced in partnership with the Innovation Forum, Sheri Hinish sits down with Christine Goulay, founder of Sustainabelle Advisory Services in Paris. Christine brings 20 years of experience at the intersection of sustainability and fashion, including operational roles at Pangaea and the Kering Group (the luxury conglomerate behind Gucci and Balenciaga), advisory work with UNEP and the Textile Exchange, and board positions with traceability and materials startups including Fairly Made. Together, they unpack the honest state of sustainable apparel in 2026. Christine identifies three distinct tiers of brand behavior: the core leaders who are integrating sustainability as a risk reduction and customer engagement strategy, the compliance hedgers who are calculating whether to invest now or pay fines later, and the silent majority waiting to see which way the regulatory wind blows. She explains why regulation was the decisive differentiator in scaling reuse in France, why the same dynamic is now playing out with the California Textile Recovery Act and Digital Product Passport requirements in the EU, and why simply checking the compliance box builds adequate supply chains, not extraordinary ones. Christine introduces a powerful framework: the love language of sustainability. Borrowed from Gary Chapman's 1992 book, the concept is that sustainability leaders must speak the language of their audience, replacing terms like ESG with resilience when talking to procurement, framing impact as risk reduction for CFOs, and embedding sustainability KPIs alongside financial metrics so sourcing teams can make balanced decisions without career risk. She shares how France's EPR eco-modulation bonus returns 70 cents per garment for certified materials versus a five-to-seven cent average EPR cost, and how forward-thinking brands are embedding CO2 emissions data directly into RFPs. • The Strait of Hormuz Playbook: Navigating the Biggest Supply Chain Crisis Since COVID with Sam Achampong, CIPS 20.04.2026 28min
The Strait of Hormuz crisis has become the largest disruption to global energy supply since the 1970s oil embargo, with ship transits collapsing by over 95% and an estimated 230 loaded oil tankers stranded inside the Persian Gulf. Fertilizer exports through the strait have plummeted by more than 90%, threatening global food production heading into planting season. So what does the recovery playbook actually look like for supply chain and procurement leaders whose operations run through the Gulf? In this episode, Sheri Hinish sits down with Sam Achampong, Regional Director for CIPS across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific, live from Dubai in the middle of the crisis. Sam brings over 18 years of experience operating in the Gulf region and offers an unvarnished, on-the-ground perspective that transcends the headlines. Together, they unpack how business continuity plans are holding up (and where they are falling short), why organizations are renegotiating payment terms with strategic suppliers to fund local sourcing pivots, and how the cash-flow circularity strategy is helping companies stabilize operations in real time. Sam shares hard-earned lessons on supplier relationship management, the critical difference between transactional and strategic partnerships, and why the best procurement leaders never become famous. They also explore the talent gap, the underinvestment in people skills relative to technical capabilities, and why context engineering is the true differentiator for AI-enabled supply chain decision-making. Sam closes with a powerful historical parallel: CIPS itself was founded in response to the Smoot-Hawley tariffs of the 1930s, proving that procurement professionals have been navigating geopolitical disruption for nearly a century. Key Topics: Strait of Hormuz crisis, Middle East supply chain disruption, procurement recovery playbook, business continuity planning, supplier relationship management, strategic sourcing, energy supply chain, petrochemical trade disruption, fertilizer supply crisis, AI in supply chain risk, talent development, CIPS, geopolitical risk management
  • #1 Industry 4.0 Thought Leader on What Manufacturers Get Wrong About Digital Transformation | Insights with Jeff Winter (Belden) 28.06.2026 26min
Industry 4.0 is not a tool set you buy. It is a business transformation that requires the right strategy, storytelling, change management, and credible execution across both business and the plant floor. That is the thesis Jeff Winter has been refining for years, and it is why he has been ranked the number one global thought leader for Industry 4.0 by Onalytica, named the number one global influencer in manufacturing by Manufacturing Digital Magazine, and has amassed over 100 million views across more than 1,300 LinkedIn posts. In this episode of the Supply Chain Revolution podcast, Sheri Hinish sits down with Jeff, now VP of Commercial Strategy at Belden, for a conversation about what it actually takes to make Industry 4.0 real inside a manufacturing organization. Jeff traces his career from sales engineer to safety PLC turning point to the moment he stopped selling products and started selling visions, and how LinkedIn and storytelling transformed not just his career but his identity. Together, they unpack why manufacturers struggle to turn proven technologies into a clear path forward (most start with nouns like AI and IoT when they should start with verbs like reduce, accelerate, and standardize), the five prerequisites that must be true inside an organization before technology creates value, and the emerging concept of the "two factories" model where a physical factory makes the product and an AI factory produces the intelligence that runs it. Jeff also shares his framework for understanding Industry 4.0 as both an era and a destination, why every plant thinks it is special (and why that kills scale), and what connected intelligence looks like when done right. Chapter Markers: 0:00 Introduction: making Industry 4.0 real 1:03 Meet Jeff Winter: origin story and career arc 2:07 LinkedIn, storytelling, and 100 million views: building a movement 3:41 The safety PLC turning point: from selling components to selling the safe machine 8:40 Selling the product vs. selling the problem vs. selling the vision 10:21 Industry 4.0 defined: era vs. destination (and why both are right) 13:32 Why manufacturers struggle: starting with nouns instead of verbs 14:17 Cross-functional value, functional budgets, and the ownership gap 15:20 Industry 5.0 vs. 4.0: is 15 years enough for an industrial revolution? 19:27 What real digital transformation requires: five prerequisites 21:25 Every plant thinks it is special (and why that kills scale) 23:21 The next manufacturing operating model: from connected equipment to connected intelligence 24:51 Jensen Huang's two factories: the physical factory and the AI factory 25:14 Making intelligence operational: the real competitive advantage 26:19 Final words and how to find Jeff on LinkedIn Key Topics: Industry 4.0, digital transformation, IT/OT convergence, manufacturing strategy, smart manufacturing, physical AI, connected intelligence, NVIDIA two factories, Belden, change management, human centricity, cross-functional KPIs, manufacturing operating model, automation, IoT, digital twin, business case for transformation, plant floor to enterprise, operational technology, Jeff Winter Connect and Learn More: Jeff Winter: linkedin.com/in/jeffreyrwinter Belden: belden.com Sheri Hinish (Supply Chain Queen): supplychainqueen.com Subscribe to Supply Chain Revolution on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and wherever you listen.
