A New View on Situational Leadership with Suzie Bishop and Sam Shriver 19.08.2026 40minHow can leaders adapt their approach to give people what they need in each specific situation? In this episode, Kevin is joined by Suzie Bishop and Sam Shriver to revisit situational leadership and discuss why this decades-old model may be more relevant than ever. They explain how effective leadership begins by clearly identifying the task, skill, or behavior involved, then assessing an individual's ability, confidence, commitment, and motivation before choosing the right leadership response. Kevin, Suzie, and Sam discuss why no leadership style is inherently good or bad, how empowerment can feel like abandonment and direction can feel like micromanagement when misapplied, and why leaders must step beyond their comfort zones to serve others' needs. Beating the Forgetting Curve - Thoughts from Kevin 17.08.2026 5minHow much do you forget after you learn something? A lot — probably more than you'd like to admit. Whether it's a training session, a podcast, a book, or a video like this one, most of what we learn slips away faster than we expect. In this episode, I share four things you can do to remember more and forget less: focus on the key points, make them findable, use spaced repetition, and have a learning partner. If we know we're going to forget the things we learn, let's have a plan for remembering the most important parts. Creating a Connected Culture with Dr. Jamie Shapiro 12.08.2026 32minI can bet you want two things: a thriving team and a thriving culture. For a lot of us, they feel like a mirage — we can see them, but we can't quite get there. In this episode I sit down with Dr. Jamie Shapiro, author of Connected Culture: The New Science for Thriving Teams and Cultures, CEO coach, and organizational psychologist. We dig into why she calls culture an "operating system," her five C's model (with connection — care and trust — at the center), why clarity is a force multiplier and not bureaucracy, the difference between collaboration and teamwork, and how AI shows up differently in cultures built on trust versus fear. Why Training Doesn't Stick - Thoughts from Kevin 10.08.2026 4minDo you ever wonder why training doesn't stick? It's rarely about the quality of the training itself. In this episode, I break down the three things that have to happen for new skills to actually change how someone works — and why that almost never happens without help from their leader. I'll give you three specific questions to ask in a post-training one-on-one that close the knowing-doing gap and make training stick. Want more like this every week? Teams That Meet the Moment with Karina Mangu-Ward 05.08.2026 37minWhat does it take for groups of people to come together to do extraordinary things? Kevin sits down with Karina Mangu-Ward to discuss the habits that help teams thrive in complex and uncertain environments. Karina explains why exceptional teamwork requires more than a strong strategy, talented individuals, or simply working harder, and introduces three essential areas of focus: organizing for impact, deciding in uncertainty, and designing for learning. They talk about how living team charters keep people aligned as conditions change, how "even overs" clarify difficult tradeoffs between two valuable priorities, and why working in public allows teams to collaborate earlier, learn faster, and avoid wasted effort. Karina also encourages leaders to replace perfectionism with experimentation, create shared language around decision-making, and begin where there is energy rather than waiting for a company-wide mandate. About Karina Karina Mangu-Ward is the author of the forthcoming book Teams Who Meet the Moment: 9 Practices for Unlocking Performance and Growth in Uncertain Times . She is an organizational expert who has worked with PepsiCo, Planned Parenthood, Chanel and more and is a Partner at August. At August, she's had the privilege of working with some of the largest, most complex organizations in the world to shift their everyday ways of working. Before August, her adventures included conducting research on implicit bias, helping arts organizations behave as creatively behind the scenes as they do on stage, and running social innovation labs. If you buy Karina a coffee, she'd love to tell you how all of these experiences led her to exactly where she is now. Her motto is "get caught trying," which means she'd rather try and screw it up than not try at all. She lives with her partner and kids in Brooklyn, NY. Silent Expectations Aren't Expectations at All - Thoughts from Kevin 03.08.2026 4minHave you ever been frustrated because someone on your team didn't do what you expected — but you never actually told them what you expected? In this episode, Kevin breaks down the "silent expectation" problem: why it guarantees future disappointment, why your assumptions aren't obvious to anyone but you, and why the fix starts with getting clear in your own head before you can get clear with your team. Unclear expectations are one of the biggest hidden costs in any organization — showing up as rework, frustration, and turnover. Clear, spoken expectations are a foundational skill of great leadership, and it's one of the core things we work on inside our Bud to Boss workshops, built for people who've just moved from peer to leader. Solving the Paradox of Modern Leadership with Sally Netherwood 29.07.2026 34minLeadership often feels like a series of competing demands: be confident, but humble. Be decisive, but compassionate. Kevin Eikenberry is joined by leadership coach and author Sally Netherwood to explore the paradox of modern leadership through the lens of her new book, Graceful Power. Together, they discuss the three pillars of graceful power—Congruence, Courage, and Compassion—and why becoming a more effective leader isn't about choosing one over the other, but learning to hold both with intention. If you're looking to lead with greater clarity, confidence, and impact, this conversation is full of practical insights you can apply right away. Sally's Story: Sally Netherwood is the author of Graceful Power: Solving the Paradox of Modern Leadership, and a world-class leadership coach with over 25 years' experience helping business leaders, entrepreneurs and change-makers feel clearer, braver and more effective. Drawing on tens of thousands of coaching hours, she offers leaders tangible strategies that create immediate improvements in performance, workplace culture and daily working life. After a decade in the fast-paced world of advertising at three of the world's top agencies, she now works with leaders from organizations including Expedia and DoorDash, helping them discover and embrace their Graceful Power, so they achieve far more with significantly less personal cost. The Power of the Pause - Thoughts from Kevin 27.07.2026 4minWhat if you paused? We live in a world that keeps getting faster — and that speed is exactly why pauses matter more than ever. In this episode I talk about four places pauses make the biggest difference: when we're communicating, when we're listening, before we decide, and as leaders overall. Because here's the thing — the pause is where leadership lives. I also share a question worth asking about your team's culture: does it reward the quick answer over the right answer? And a few ways to start building pauses into your team's norms. If you found this useful, you'll probably enjoy my weekly newsletter, Unleashing Your Remarkable Potential. Every Tuesday I share thoughts to help you pause and think about leadership differently. How Change Really Works with Kristy Ellmer 22.07.2026 31minWhy do so many organizational change efforts fall short, even when leaders know change is necessary? In this episode, Kevin talks with Kristy Ellmer about how change actually works and why successful transformation requires more than a plan, a process, or a compelling business case. Kristy explains that leaders often confuse alignment with true agreement, and that real progress begins when teams are willing to slow down, surface disagreement, and clarify how the change will happen. She also shares that involvement alone is not enough; people need agency and ownership to commit to building something new. Kevin and Kristy discuss the role of rituals, stories, and symbols in reducing cognitive load and helping people connect emotionally with the change, as well as why leaders must "earn the take-up" rather than assume people will adopt new behaviors simply because the change makes sense. About Kristy Ellmer Kristy Ellmer is the co-author of How Change Really Works: Seven Science-Based Principles for Transforming Your Organization. She is a Managing Director and Senior Partner at BCG and a former Chief Transformation Officer, with decades of experience leading multiyear transformations inside global organizations. She leads BCG's Transformation practice and co-founded BCG's Behavioral Science Lab and specializes in translating academic research on human behavior into practical change and transformation programs that deliver sustained results. She has led over 30 transformations in 27 countries in 14 sectors from mining to retail and previously was a manager at Delta Airlines during one of the most exemplary transformations in business history. Kristy's completion of the 29029 Everesting Challenge—climbing the vertical height of Mount Everest 19 times in under 36 hours after months of disciplined training—embodies the same change principles she applies professionally: sustained commitment, deliberate design, support systems, and faith in process over motivation. Her TED Talk on navigating change with confidence has been seen by over half a million people. She has an MBA from Mercer University and a B.A. from Roanoke College. She's based in Boston. The Habit-Identity Connection - Thoughts from Kevin 20.07.2026 3minAre you what you do? James Clear says identity change is the North Star for habit change — and he's right. But it works the other way too: your habits are quietly shaping your identity. In this episode, I talk about the two-way loop between habits and identity, why "your labels, your limits" applies to how you see yourself, and what this means for the culture of your team — because culture is really just collective identity, shaped by collective habits. A New Method for Getting Teams Unstuck with Gustavo Razzetti 15.07.2026 31minWhat keeps teams stuck in the same conversations without making real progress? In this episode, Kevin talks with Gustavo Razzetti about why teams avoid the conversations that matter most and how leaders can help them move forward. Gustavo shares that silence often happens not just because people feel unsafe, but because speaking up feels pointless when nothing changes. They discuss the difference between backward talk (blame, avoidance, and groupthink) and forward talk, which helps teams address real issues, learn, and act. Gustavo also introduces the idea of conversational debt, the price teams pay for the questions they don't ask, the ideas they don't share, and the issues they avoid. Kevin and Gustavo discuss the three types of this debt: alignment debt, belonging debt, and collaboration debt, and why leaders must continually validate alignment, welcome healthy dissent, and create space for real progress. They also touch on how AI can amplify existing team dynamics, making groupthink and misalignment even more costly. How Leaders Can Create Urgency Without Creating Panic 13.07.2026 4minDo you create the right amount of urgency? Urgency can help us take action, move faster, and get important work done. But too much urgency, or false urgency, can create pressure, confusion, and exhaustion without improving results. In this episode, Kevin Eikenberry explores the tension leaders face between moving quickly and rushing unnecessarily. You'll learn why context matters, how false urgency weakens real urgency, and why clear communication and timelines help create the right level of focus for the situation. The key: create urgency when it is needed, but avoid making everything feel like a fire. The Elevated Leader with Laurie Maddalena 08.07.2026 34minHow can leaders elevate their impact without sacrificing their energy, focus, and quality of life? In this episode, Kevin talks with Laurie Maddalena about what it means to become an elevated leader in today's changing world of work. Laurie challenges the outdated belief that leadership requires constant overwhelm, availability, and personal sacrifice, and instead makes the case for leading with greater intention, self-awareness, reflection, and energy. Kevin and Laurie discuss why many leaders are promoted without real preparation, how the role shifts from doing the work to developing people, and why managers must move from being fixers to facilitators. They also discuss practical ways to protect focus and manage energy rather than just time. It's Not the Workload, It's the Thought Load with Dr. Liane Davey 01.07.2026 34minHow much of your team's struggle is really about the work and how much is about everything else? In this episode, Kevin talks with Dr. Liane Davey about why the real challenge many teams face isn't simply workload, but "thought load". Liane defines this as the rising cognitive demands, emotional burdens, and depleted energy reserves that make work feel heavier than it may appear. She explains how multitasking, constant urgency, oversized meetings, unclear priorities, and poor energy habits quietly drain performance and create more rework, stress, and burnout. She also shares practical ways leaders can help, including replacing urgency with true priority, creating space for focused work, taking real breaks, managing emotions rather than ignoring them, and modeling healthier boundaries.
