  Disabled Driver Speaks Out Over Loss Of Parking Space 25.09.2026 6min

  A disability parking space on Bindon Lane in Ennis has been removed, with faded markings still visible and double yellow lines now painted over the area. This created confusion for a disabled driver and, in this case, resulted in significant inconvenience, as finding alternative parking further away made it more difficult for one driver to access his destination. Desmond Lillis, a disabled driver who experienced this first-hand while visiting the Citizens Information office, joined Alan Morrissey on Friday's Morning Focus. In a statement to Clare FM, the local authority says that "where disabled spaces are in operation in Ennis, the Council clearly delineates disabled parking spaces with regulatory road markings and upright signage. In this instance, while it is noted that there are historic faded markings, it does not constitute an active disabled parking bay, and the freshly marked double yellow lines indicate no parking is allowed."   One Clare man is turning a 15-year-old promise into reality this month. Musician Damien Gormley is taking on the Dublin City Marathon, with a very personal reason for doing so. He wants to raise funds for Bushypark Addiction Treatment Centre, where he was a resident back in 2011.   Agency Staff Dependency Criticised Amid Ennis Hospital Cancellations 25.09.2026 2min

  It's claimed over dependency on agency staff is contributing to a high level of cancellations at Ennis Hospital. Almost 20,000 medical procedures have been cancelled there in the past two and a half years. While roughly 850 were postponed for reasons linked to overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick, over 10,500 were cancelled by patients. Ennis Fianna Fáil Councillor and HSE Regional Health Forum MidWest forum member Antoinette Baker Bashua has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan all avenues need to be explored to ensure consultant and patient time is managed effectively.

  Rank-and-file Gardaí are set to take industrial action on five dates in October, following a decision by the Garda Representative Association to escalate its dispute with Garda management and Government. The GRA says its members have concerns around pay agreements, allowances, collective bargaining rights and what it describes as the treatment of Garda representatives.   Clare’s first-ever Age Friendly Week gets underway next week, with a programme of events celebrating positive ageing across the county. As part of the week, the Health and Wellbeing Age Expo will take place at Treacy’s West County Hotel in Ennis on Thursday, October 1st, bringing together more than 60 organisations offering information, advice and support for older people, their families and carers.   The annual De Valera Day commemoration takes place in Ennis this Sunday, (27th September), marking the life and legacy of one of the most significant figures in modern Irish history, Éamon de Valera. The event will include a wreath-laying by members of the de Valera family, a presentation, and an address by Taoiseach Micheál Martin.   Ageing Population: Are We Sleepwalking Into One Of The Biggest Social And Healthcare Challenges In History? 25.09.2026 18min

  Ireland is facing a major demographic shift, with more than one million people expected to be over the age of 65 by the end of this decade, while the population aged 85 and over is projected to grow by 162% by 2045. Nursing Homes Ireland is warning that the country is running out of time to prepare, saying we need a national conversation about how we will provide care and support for an ageing population. For a GP's perspective on this, Alan Morrissey spoke with with the Lahinch-based member of the IMO's GP Committee, Dr Michael Kelleher. Alan was also joined by Tadhg Daly, CEO of Nursing Homes Ireland, to discuss the scale of the challenge, the pressure on nursing-home capacity, and what needs to happen to prepare for the years ahead.   Lahinch "Won't Regain" Blue Flag Without Public Consultation On New WWTP 25.09.2026 2min

  It's claimed Lahinch won't regain its Blue Flag status without a public consultation on the Cregg-Calluragh wastewater treatment plant being carried out. Government have been called on to instruct Uisce Eireann to launch the consultation on the proposal. Locals have expressed concern that the estimated 9,300 max capacity of the plant is far below peak figures. Speaking in the Seanad, Ennistymon Senator Martin Conway says it's positive that the project is being progressed, but that it needs to be done properly.

  A lack of warning signage for Heavy Goods Vehicles is said to be causing traffic chaos in Killaloe. It's been claimed that HGV's are getting stuck on the town's main street on a weekly basis, and are often being held up for an hour at a time. It's understood the issue will be investigated by Killaloe Municipal District Engineers. Killaloe Fianna Fáil Councillor Tony O'Brien says action is urgently needed.

  Clare TD Says Fuel Protestors Should Refrain Until Budget Is Revealed 24.09.2026 4min

  A Clare TD says fuel protesters should wait until the budget is revealed before deciding to take to the roads again. It comes as The People of Ireland Against Fuel Prices group are set to meet this weekend to discuss the possibility of further protests. There are calls on the Government to permanently cut the tax on petrol and diesel. It comes as the excise reductions on fuel, introduced in April, are now expected to remain in place until spring. The extension is part of ongoing budget negotiations, while the Tánaiste earlier this week indicated there will be a cut to the carbon tax on home-heating oil. Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty, says the tax on fuel should never go back to where it was: A meeting will take place in Westmeath this weekend, where protestors will discuss plans for any future demonstrations. Tánaiste Simon Harris has claimed that Government won't be held ransom by threats of further action. Bodyke Fine Gael TD Joe Cooney claims protestors should hold off until budget supports are revealed.
