Michael Faraday - “There is nothing quite as frightening as someone who knows they are right.” 04.10.2026 3minWelcome to the Daily Quote, the podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to you by the Great News podcast. Because great news should be heard, and the link is right here in the show notes.Support the show Buy me a coffee Today’s quote comes from Michael Faraday. He was one of the great experimental scientists of the 19th century and his approach depended on questioning his own assumptions and testing ideas against evidence. You know, the scientific method!Michael Faraday once said… “There is nothing quite as frightening as someone who knows they are right.”First lets start with what this quote is not saying. At least I think so because I could be wrong. See what I did there. This quote isn’t an attack on confidence. It’s about what happens when confidence becomes certainty. The key word to focus on here is knows. There is a big difference between “I think I’m right” and “I know I’m right” Being confident about your ideas can help you take action and present your ideas, defend them or publish them. But being certain about your ideas can mean you stop listening. You dismiss contradictory evidence instead of investigating. This doesn’t just apply to science. It is the same in politics, relationships, work, parenting, business and everyday arguments. Being willing to say I might be wrong isn’t weakness. It is intellectual humility. Faraday is also documented as saying… “a person who is certain they're right is “almost sure to be wrong.”Michael Faraday’s career is a great example of this. He was always willing to test his theories and examine all possibilities. Progress comes from being willing to test your assumptions rather than protect them.So here’s the question:Have you ever been absolutely convinced you were right about something but later discovered you were wrong? I know I have. You don’t have to abandon your convictions. Just leave the door open for new evidence.Just like most things in life a little balance is the best way to go. Be confident enough to take action while remaining humble enough to discover that you might be wrong. That’s going to do it for today. Thich Nhat Hanh -“Nothing is more precious than being in the present moment. Fully alive, fully aware.” 03.10.2026 6minWelcome to the Daily Quote, the podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to you by the Great News podcast. Because great news should be heard, and the link is right here in the show notes.Support the show Buy me a coffee Today’s quote is from Thich Nhat Hanh.He is the author of The Miracle of Mindfulness. I’ve read the first just the first 6 pages and it literally changed my life.Thich Nhat Hanh once said…“Nothing is more precious than being in the present moment. Fully alive, fully aware.”Life happens in the present moment. The past exists only in our memories and the future exists only in our expectations and imagination. The only moment we can directly experience is this one, right now. Being physically present is not the same being mentally present. You can sit beside someone you love while thinking about work, scrolling through your phone, or worrying about tomorrow. You may be there but you’re not fully there. What this quote means by fully alive and fully aware is that every experience becomes more powerful when you give them your full attention. The taste of your morning coffee, the warmth of the sun on your skin, a good conversation or a good laugh. I got the book The Miracle of Mindfulness for Christmas one year. It was in my stocking and although it is the kind of book I like reading, it sat on the coffee table for over a year. I didn’t pick it up until I was asked if I’m ever going to read it! I read the forward and it peaked my interest so I started the first chapter and by the time I got six pages in I had one of those light bulb moments.Thich Nhat Hanh wrote about a conversation he had with a friend who was always preoccupied with other thoughts no matter what he was doing. And I could relate. When I was walking the dog I felt I should be working. When I was at my son’s soccer game I felt like I should be writing or working on my website or something. When I was at the office I felt like I should be home with the family. No matter what I was doing I was thinking of something else.. I wasn’t really conscious of it as something bad… it was just the way it is.I felt that I never had the time for myself to do everything I wanted to do. And it created this underlying anxiety that was always there. Nagging away at me. I had divided my time into segments, time for family, time for work, time for the dog, time for projects and time for me. Well, in the book Hanh’s friend said he realized that he had all the time in the world to do everything he wanted to do. He had unlimited time for himself because he stopped thinking about his time being divided. His time for his kids was also his time. Time for his wife was also his time. Time for work was his time. He had all the time in the world for himself because it was all his time.I thought about this and realized that I have all the time I could possibly have. And in that moment I felt that anxiety evaporate. I put the book down thinking that maybe it wouldn’t last. So I decided to see how long until the anxiety came back. This was years ago and it never came back. Nothing in my life had actually improved (actually it got worse) but everything was better because I was fully present. So here’s the question:When was the last time you were completely present in the moment? Not thinking that you should be doing something else or thinking of the past or the future… but present in the moment. Remember all the time you have is your time! That’s going to do it for today. Confucius - “It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.” 02.10.2026 3minWelcome to the Daily Quote, the podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to you by the Great News podcast. Because great news should be heard, and the link is right here in the show notes.Support the show Buy me a coffee Today’s quote is commonly attributed to Confucius. Confucius (551–479 BCE) was an ancient Chinese philosopher and teacher whose ideas profoundly influenced Chinese culture and philosophy. He emphasized education, ethical behavior, respect for others, personal responsibility, and the importance of cultivating good character. His teachings were later compiled by his students and followers in the Analects.Confucius once said…“It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.” Yesterday we talked about how a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. Today we taking it a little further by saying it doesn’t matter how slowly you go… just don’t stop. Slow progress is still progress. A small amount of progress, repeated consistently can eventually produce extraordinary results. The key is consistency over time. Starting something is exciting. Launching something new and celebrating the new venture is enticing. And finishing something is satisfying. But most of the journey happens in the middle when you’re doing all the work and nobody is celebrating it. No launch party, no victory lap… just work and more work. Progress happens when you continue even when your not inspired. One new episode isn’t much, one page written isn’t a lot. One new customer doesn’t make your business. But if you keep adding them up. Bingo!Sometimes going slowly is the only way you can go. Going fast can burn you out and then you have stopped. Don’t stop.So here’s the question:What is something in your life where you don’t need to go faster but you just need to keep going? That’s going to do it for today. Lao Tzu - “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” 01.10.2026 3minWelcome to the Daily Quote, the podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. 1000 episodes and counting. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to you by the Great News podcast. Because great news should be heard, and the link is right here in the show notes.Support the show Buy me a coffee Today’s quote comes from Lao Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher who is said to have lived around 600 BCE. The quote is an English translation of a passage in the Tao Te Ching. Lao Tzu once said…“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”This is one of my favourite quotes. Big journeys are intimidating when viewed all at once. A 1000 miles sounds impossible but a single step is easy. The difference is perspective. A single step, repeated over and over again will take you 1000 miles eventually. Every major project can be broken down into single steps. But often we don’t do that. We look at the whole thing and decide we have to wait until we are ready. Until we have more knowledge, more confidence or more time. But sometimes the first few steps is what creates all those things.Your first step doesn’t have to be impressive. It just has to be in the direction you want to go. And progress will seem almost invisible at first. But those steps will add up and before you realize it you will be at 1000. And your destination could change somewhere along the way. You don’t have to know what the 387th step will look like when you take step 1. You might pivot, you might course correct. The important thing is to take the first step… and then do it again and again. The episode you are listening to right now is the 1000th episode of the Daily Quote. And if I had looked at this podcast as a 1000 episode project I may have been intimidated and maybe I wouldn’t have started it. But I didn’t create 1000’s episodes. I created one episode, 1000 times.I didn’t set out to make 1000 episodes. I just focused on the next episode for 1000 days. Just one episode per day.So here’s the question:What is something you’ve been thinking about starting but it is too big a project and you are intimidated by it? Don’t think about the 1000 miles… just figure out what is the first step. And then take the first step. That’s going to do it for today. I’m Andrew McGivern signing off for now, but I’ll be back… tomorrow! Because even after 1000 episodes, the journey continues one step (or episode) at a time. Billy Connolly - “The future doesn’t exist and neither does the past. Worrying about it is a waste of time and effort.” 30.09.2026 4minWelcome to the Daily Quote, the podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to you by the Great News podcast. Because great news should be heard, and the link is right here in the show notes.Support the show Buy me a coffee Today’s quote comes from Billy Connolly, a Scottish comedian, actor, musician and entertainer. He is famous for his observational humour, storytelling and distinctive style.Billy Connolly once said…“The future doesn’t exist and neither does the past. Worrying about it is a waste of time and effort.”This one rings true to me. The past is gone and the future hasn’t happened yet. Neither of them exist in the present moment. The present moment is where all your control is.Worrying about the future is a waste of time. Worrying about an imaginary future by imagining events that haven’t happened yet. Rehearsing conversations that we may never have. Creating scenarios in our heads and reacting emotionally as if they are real. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t plan for the future. Planning and Worrying are two very different things. Planning says what can I do? Worrying says what if everything goes wrong?Worrying about the past is just as useless. Regret is simply trying to mentally rewrite something that already happened. We can learn from the past without trying to live there. But reflecting on the past isn’t the same as regret. Reflection asks What can I learn from that? Regret asks Why didn’t I do something different? Reflecting on the past can change what the past means to you in the present. You can use the past to empower you to action in the present. And you can imagine an awesome future that is worth working hard for in the present. Both the past and the future can serve you in the present instead of causing anxiety, fear and paralysis. Constant exposure to negative news can force you to imagine a future where everything is getting worse. Most movies portray the future as apocalyptic and horrible. It is easy to become cynical even though the reality is that there are so many good things happening in the world. If you focus on these great developments your world outlook improves. So here is the question:How much of your time are you actually going to spend living in the moment today? And how much are going to spend living in the past that can’t be changed or a future that hasn’t happened?Live in the moment. Reflect and Plan. But live now. That’s going to do it for today. Lucien LaCroix - “You cannot deny what you are.” 29.09.2026 5minWelcome to the Daily Quote, the podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to you by the Great News podcast. Because great news should be heard, and the link is right here in the show notes.Support the show Buy me a coffee Today’s quote was originally going to be “Stay true to who you are” but I couldn’t verify the attribution and it reminded me of a quote that I know the attribution for… even if he is a fictional character.Today’s quote is from Lucien LaCroix.Lucien LaCroix is a fictional character from the Canadian TV series Forever Knight, played by Nigel Bennett. He’s a centuries-old vampire and the character who continually tries to convince Nick Knight to stop fighting his vampire nature and embrace who he really is. In Toronto, LaCroix doubles as a late-night radio host known as the Nightcrawler.LaCroix is the senior vampire in Toronto, having been turned to vampirism when he was a Roman general a couple thousand years ago. He is the antagonist to Nick Knight, an 800 year old vampire who is trying to cure himself of vampirism with the help of a Toronto pathologist who is also a love interest. Nick Knight is trying to atone for his 8 centuries of blood sucking and murder by becoming a Toronto police officer and he uses his vampire super powers to fight crime. Of course, due to a severe sun allergy he only works the night shift. I know its cheesy and it gets even cheesier. It was one of my favourite shows back in the day. As Nick Knight tried to make things right by seeking redemption by helping people while searching for a cure to be human again, Lucien LaCroix is always trying to tempt him back to the dark ways of the vampire.Lucien LaCroix once said…“You cannot deny what you are.”LaCroix is talking about Nick’s vampire nature and is encouraging him to embrace it. To give up his quest for redemption and give in to his evil impulses. And to feed on humans again. But Nick isn’t interested. He is determined to return to what he was. To be human again. To embrace love and connection. He chooses to embrace who he believes he really is. Not the monster but the human underneath. And that is where it gets interesting because LaCroix is technically right. You cannot deny who you are.But the important question is who gets to decide who you are? Are you defined by your past? By your mistakes? By your worst moments? By things other people have said about you?Or are you allowed to decide that you are going to be something different? Nick’s answer is basically, Yes, this is what I have been for a long time. But it isn’t what I have to be now. And that is where the power lies. In our choice to decide what we are. We all have things we might wish were different. Maybe its a bad habit (hopefully not drinking human blood). Maybe it is a mistake made years ago. Maybe it is something we did that we are not proud of.Accepting all these things as they are doesn’t mean surrendering to it. You can say, yes, that is unfortunately part of my story but that doesn’t mean it is my future destiny. Accepting who you are may be the first step in changing who you are. So here’s the question:Is there a part of yourself that you don’t like that you believe you cannot deny? What would happen if you acknowledge it and decide it is time to change? And if you haven’t watched Forever Knight before… check it out. It is cheesy but it is a fun show with a non-Hollywood… well I won’t spoil it.That’s going to do it for today. I’m Andrew McGivern signing off for now, but I’ll be back… tomorrow! Stanley Horowitz - “Nothing lowers the level on conversation more than raising the voice." 28.09.2026 3minWelcome to the Daily Quote, the podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to you by the Great News podcast. Because great news should be heard, and the link is right here in the show notes.Support the show Buy me a coffee Today’s quote is from Stanley Horowitz. He is an American writer and speaker whose work has focused on communication, dialogue, and human interaction. He once said…“Nothing lowers the level on conversation more than raising the voice."Have you ever been in a conversation and someone disagrees with you and instead of calmly presenting a logical argument they raise their voice thinking it makes them more persuasive or somehow superior? Maybe, you’ve done this yourself too? I know I’m guilty of it at times.Raising my voice doesn’t make my reasoning stronger or my statements more valid. It just makes the conversation louder. And makes me less effective at convincing anyone of anything. That doesn’t mean you should be passive either. You can be firm, passionate and compelling while completely disagreeing with someone without yelling. The loudest person isn’t the most convincing. Often the person who remains calm and listens carefully has much more influence than the person dominating the conversation by relying on volume. So here’s the question:When was the last time you changed someone’s mind ( or had your own mind changed ) because you had a genuine conversation? And how many times did yelling work? Exactly. So before responding with anger or by raising your voice, ask yourself… Am I trying to understand this person or am I trying to defeat him?Because if you are trying to understand then why not listen carefully and respond calmly. It works better almost every time.Unless you’re Italian… then maybe yelling is just the way things are. I know it can be like that in French and Irish families too. The right context and situational awareness is important. That’s going to do it for today. I’m Andrew McGivern signing off for now, but I’ll be back… tomorrow! His major work, The World as Will and Representation, argued that much of human behavior is driven by an endless striving for things we want. His ideas later influenced thinkers such as Nietzsche, Freud, and Jung.Arthur Schopenhauer once said…“Every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world.”We all have our own perspective on reality. What we see and experience can feel like the whole picture simply because it is the only picture we have. We see the world through our upbringing, education, culture, religion, beliefs, experiences and our assumptions. The world we experience is the world we can see.If we have never experienced something it is difficult to see it as real. Or even to imagine it. The same is true when we engage with someone who sees the world completely differently.Someone can see a situation completely differently than you, without being crazy, stupid, dishonest or unreasonable. They are simply looking at the same thing you are, but with different filters or from a different angle or perspective. There is a huge difference between I haven’t see it yet and it doesn’t exist. It depends on whether you have an open mind or closed one. Having an open mind does not mean you believe everything. It means being willing to examine your assumptions and update them when the evidence warrants it. This is particularly relevant in today’s world where we are bombarded with negative news every day. If we are doomscrolling and see only conflict, disaster and decline, then it is easy to draw a conclusion that that is what the world actually looks like. But if you expand your field of vision to include all the amazing progress and positive developments that don’t usually get the same attention then you start to see the world a little differently. This podcast is brought to you by the Great News podcast where you get inspiring stories and developments making the world a better place. Bruce Lee lived from 1940 to 1973 and he founded the martial arts philosophy and system Jeet Kun Do. He became a cultural icon through films such as Enter the Dragon and The Way of the Dragon. His philosophy emphasized adaptability, self discipline, personal growth, and taking action instead of talking about change.Bruce Lee once said…“To hell with circumstances; I create opportunities.”I think the key word in this quote is create. Bruce Lee is saying that instead of waiting around for circumstances to change and for opportunities to appear, why not look for ways to manufacture one.I don’t think that Bruce Lee was saying that circumstances are not real. Whatever problems you are facing are probably real. But I believe Bruce is saying that the solution is real too.We can’t control everything that happens to us but we can control how we respond. And quite often opportunities do appear but they are disguised as problems. And in trying to overcome the problem the opportunity becomes clear. So here’s the question:What problem or circumstance is blocking you in achieving what you want? And have you looked at how you can turn the problem into an opportunity? There is probably a way. He is widely regarded as the founder of modern drama and his plays challenged social conventions and explored themes like individual freedom, morality, marriage, and personal responsibility. He is known for A Doll’s House, Hedda Galber, Ghosts, and Peer Gynt.Henrik Ibsen once said…“A thousand words leave not the same deep impression as does a single deed”What this quote is essentially saying is that talk is cheap. Anybody can say anything. It is easy to say you are going to do this. You are going to learn that. Words are easy and cost you little. Action is harder and has a cost. Saying you will change. Saying you will help someone. Saying you will start something new or become a better person requires nothing of you. No effort or commitment. Actually working on your habits, showing up to help a friend, launching a project or taking a first step to get the help you need… has the power of 1000 words. If you don’t say you will change and then do the work to make the change then the evidence will speak for itself much more powerfully then words alone. This doesn’t mean words don’t matter. Words can inspire, teach, connect. Words do have weight. The language you use affects your psychology and impacts the people around you. Negative self talk is damaging. Words can hurt other people. Words do have power. The point of the quote is that action speaks louder than words. Think about all the great progress we’ve seen throughout history. It didn’t happen just by people talking about it. People actually built things, invented things, volunteered, created and designed. So here’s the question:What is one thing you've been talking about that could become much more powerful if you simply did it?That’s going to do it for today. He was an ancient Greek philospher and one of the most influencial thinkers in Western history. A student of Socrates and a teacher of Aristotle, Plato explored justice, knowledge, virtue, politics, love, and what it means to live a good life.Plato once said,“The first and greatest victory is to conquer yourself”This is so true. The only person that truly has the ability to hold yourself back is YOU.Managing our own impulses, reactions and emotions is hard.Self-mastery is not about suppressing yourself. It isn’t about having less freedom. It is about being able to choose your response before automatically reacting. It is about taking control of your habits instead of letting your habits unconsciously controlling you. Self-mastery actually gives you more freedom by giving you more choices. Don’t be a slave to your impulses and bad habits. The battles we face are not always external. Even when facing an external conflict or circumstance the real obstacle isn’t the circumstance itself but the story we are telling ourselves about the circumstance.Plato is saying the best thing you can do, your greatest victory, is to conquer yourself! To overcome the internal struggle that is limiting your potential. The longer version of Plato’s quote takes this idea a step further though.“The first and greatest victory is to conquer yourself; to be conquered by yourself is of all things most shameful and vile.”Plato is saying not only is self-mastery the greatest victory you can achieve, but that failing to do so is the worst possible outcome. To be conquered by yourself is of all things most shameful and vile.Think about your own life and how failing to conquer yourself is hurting you.Maybe it is the bad habit of procrastination. You didn’t consciously choose this habit. You acquired it over time. Maybe it is time to conquer it.Maybe it is a limiting belief that you acquired from your family, religion, culture or friends. If this belief is stopping your progress then it is time to replace it with an empowering belief.Beliefs are just thoughts we have labeled as truth.Maybe you have an irrational fear of moving outside your comfort zone. Maybe you don’t want to put yourself out there because you might be criticized or laughed at. Maybe you just can’t play life at the next level because you fear failure, or fear success or fear change.Maybe you know what you need to do but you sabotage yourself every time.Overcoming these internal challenges are the greatest victories you can have in life.So here’s the question:What is one part of yourself you’d like to have a little more control over today? And what can you do right now to conquer that part of yourself?Personal progress is worth celebrating. We often look for huge external achievements, while some of our most important victories happen quietly inside us.The key insight here is that those little internal victories make the external big wins possible! This is why Plato says the FIRST and greatest victory is to conquer yourself.Put the oxygen mask on yourself first…That’s going to do it for today. His work had a major impact on psychology, psychiatry, literature and Western Culture.Sigmund Freud once said…“One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.”I think this idea is absolutely true. This quote is from a letter Freud wrote to Carl Jung that encouraged Jung to continue his work despite opposition. This quote is all about perspective. Something that feels exhausting, frustrating and difficult today will probably look completely differently looking back years later. The struggle creates memories, meaningful experiences , life lessons and was personality building.Struggle brings people together. Friends, Colleagues, Partners, Clients or Competitors can be united during a time of struggle or to achieve a common goal. You may have long term relationships, right now, that you would not have if not for a major struggle. That doesn’t mean all suffering has a silver lining. Some stuff just needs to be let go.During a difficult period you may be focused just on getting through it but then you realize you were making yourself stronger, building yourself better. The journey is more important than the destination. The quest is what you remember not the reward at the end. The mission is what makes you. Not the target. The journey is where the growth is. The destination is less valuable without the journey. So here’s the question:What difficult period in your life do you look back on differently now and what did it give you that you couldn’t see at the time? There is probably something in your life right now that made it all worth it.That’s going to do it for today. He also wrote many plays, novels and autobiographies but it was the fairy tales that made him famous.Hans Christian Anderson once said…“The whole world is full of miracles, but we’re so used to them we call them everyday things.”Oh yeah… this is definitely true. This quote was coined over 125 years ago and Anderson saw everyday miracles back then. Today, we have giant flat screens on our walls, the internet, Artificial Intelligence, smart phones, social media, and more.Actually, in H.C. Anderson’s time, penicillin wasn’t even invented yet. So people would die from simple infections. That is an everyday miracle all by itself. The whole world has changed, in many ways, for the better. And we don’t generally think about it and feel grateful for all these ordinary, everyday things. Why? Because familiarity makes the extraordinary invisible. We see the sunrise so often we forget how beautiful it is. We breathe constantly and forget that it is an incredible miracle to be alive.Gratitude is in a way an exercise in noticing the everyday things. We don’t need more amazing things in our lives (although more great things are coming). What we really need is to notice the amazing things we all already have. Compared to the past (lets say 100 to 300 years ago), we have a much better standard of living. We have a much longer life expectancy, we have better better health care and faster transportation. In almost every measurable way, we are significantly better off. There are countless more miracles in our lives these days but we still don’t recognize them as miracles. We see them as everyday things. So here’s the qutestion:What can you see in your life as the miracle that it is and not as ordinary thing? I bet there is a lot of miracles in your life. That’s going to do it for today. I’m Andrew McGivern signing off for now, but I’ll be back… tomorrow! Søren Kierkegaard - “Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” 21.09.2026 2minWelcome to the Daily Quote, the podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to you by the Great News podcast. Because great news should be heard, and the link is right here in the show notes.Support the show Buy me a coffee .Today’s quote comes from the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, who once said…“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.”Søren Kierkegaard was a 19th-century Danish philosopher and writer whose work explored questions of faith, choice, individuality, anxiety, and what it means to live an authentic life. And I think there’s something really powerful in this quote. We often want to understand everything before we move forward. Why did that relationship end? Why did that opportunity fall through? Why did I make that decision? Where exactly is my life going? But sometimes, we simply can't know. Life gives us the explanation later. Think about some of the experiences in your own life that seemed confusing or painful at the time. Years later, you may have been able to look back and say, “Now I understand why that happened.” That's the backwards part.Hindsight gives us perspective. But here's the important part: Kierkegaard says life must be lived forwards. We can't wait until everything makes sense before we take the next step.We have to make decisions with incomplete information. We have to move forward without knowing exactly where the road will lead. And sometimes, the meaning of an experience only becomes clear because we kept moving. So perhaps the lesson isn't to figure out your entire life before you live it. Look backward for wisdom. But look forward for possibility. Your past can help explain where you've been, but it doesn't have to determine where you're going. So here's the question:What if you don't need to understand everything before taking the next step? That's going to do it for today. Seneca - “No person has the power to have everything they want, but it is in their power not to want what they don’t have.” 20.09.2026 3minWelcome to the Daily Quote, the podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to you by the Great News podcast. Because great news should be heard, and the link is right here in the show notes.Support the show Buy me a coffee Today’s quote is from Seneca… a Roman philosopher and statesman who lived nearly 2,000 years ago. One of the great figures of Stoicism, he wrote extensively about how to live a meaningful life with greater wisdom, self-control and contentment.Seneca once said…“No person has the power to have everything they want, but it is in their power not to want what they don’t have.”The quote is from Moral Letters to Lucilius (Letters 123.3). This version is a shortened form; the fuller translation adds: “…and to cheerfully put to good use what they do have.”I think the point here is that there is no way you can have everything. No matter how successful you are. No matter how wealthy or powerful you become, you will always want more. And some things will be outside your grasp.Instead of asking yourself how you can get everything you want, you might want to ask if you actually need everything you want?Seneca isn’t saying you shouldn’t have ambition or set goals. You can still build a business and improve yourself and move towards a better future. The idea here is not to make your happiness tied to achieving them. You can change the equation by appreciating what you already have and putting it to good use. Maybe the journey to having enough isn’t in acquiring more, but the learning to recognize that you already have enough. In today’s world with constant advertising showing us what we need. A better car, house, career, vacations, smart phones and lifestyles. We see influencers showing off how great their lives are and we want to have a life like that with the things that they have. The gap between what we have and what we are told we should have is endless. So here’s the question:What would change in your life if, for one day, you stopped focusing on what you're missing and deliberately appreciated what you already have?Remember, you don’t have to stop wanting more… just don’t let wanting more prevent you from appreciating what you already have. That’s going to do it for today. Unknown Author - "Stillness exposes what stimulation medicates" 19.09.2026 2minWelcome to the Daily Quote, the podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to you by the Great News podcast. Because great news should be heard, and the link is right here in the show notes.Support the show ➡ Buy me a coffee Today’s quote is from an unknown author who once said…“Stillness exposes what stimulation medicates”I think we all understand that stillness can be uncomfortable. When the noise and activity stops, our thoughts and feelings we’ve been avoiding become harder to ignore. When we are trying to avoid dealing with something, stimulation can become a form of distraction. Smart phones, social media, Netflix, busy work, shopping, doom scrolling or constant productivity optimization can give us something else to focus on instead on what is hidden underneath all the clutter and activiity. The quote uses the term “medicates”, but it isn’t about literally treating an illness. The quote suggests that we are medicating ourselves with stimulation. The problem is when we do this we know we are doing it. And our “fun” activities aren’t as fun as they should be.Because entertainment, tech, project work and activity is not always a bad thing. Stimulation can be positive. The question is whether you are choosing the activities for entertainment and growth or are you using them to avoid something. So here is the question:When was the last time you spent a few minutes without your phone, computer, music, podcasts, TV or anything else? When did you just let the quiet take over and let your thoughts free. What does your mind immediately reach for? That is what you need to focus on.And once you do… your stimulation will be more enjoyable because it will be genuine. There won’t be something lingering in the background. You will be able to be still without anxiety, stress, or guilt. That’s going to do it for today. Kevin Sinnott - “Coffee is a warm drink that fosters friendship and tastes great. Because great news should be heard, and the link is right here in the show notes.Support the show ➡ Buy me a coffee Today’s quote comes from Kevin Sinnott:“Coffee is a warm drink that fosters friendship and tastes great. What more is there to life?”Kevin Sinnott is an American coffee expert and author, best known for his work helping people better understand, appreciate and enjoy coffee. And while this quote is obviously about coffee, I think there's something much bigger hiding inside it.Because coffee isn't really just about coffee. It's about what happens around the coffee. It's the conversation you have with a friend. It's catching up with someone you haven't seen in months. It's sitting across the table from someone you love. It's the coffee you share with a colleague before starting the workday.Or maybe it's that quiet cup you enjoy by yourself while you listen to something that makes you think.Coffee has this remarkable ability to create a little space for connection. And I think that's what makes this quote particularly relevant to the Daily Quote.Because every morning, I get to share a few minutes with people I may never actually meet. You might be listening while you're drinking your morning coffee.Maybe you're driving to work.Walking the dog.Making breakfast.Or simply taking a few minutes for yourself. And although we're separated by a screen, a speaker or a pair of headphones, there's still a little connection happening.I'm sharing an idea with you.And you're giving me a few minutes of your day. That's a pretty cool exchange. And it reminds me of something I believe about creating content:Value doesn't always have to be measured in dollars. If an episode gives you something: a new perspective, a little encouragement, a moment of inspiration, or simply a few minutes of positive company, then hopefully it has added some value to your day.And if it does, there's a simple way you can return that value. You can share the episode with a friend. You can leave me five star review in your podcast app.You can leave me a comment. All of these things are valuable to me.And since today’s episode is all about coffee I wanted to let you know there's a Buy Me a Coffee link in the show notes. You certainly don't have to use it. There's no obligation. But if you've been enjoying the Daily Quote and you'd like to support the show, you can literally buy me a coffee. I love coffee and I even did a whole episode on how awesome coffee is in the great news podcast.Buying me a coffee is a small way of saying, “I appreciate what you're creating. Keep going.”And that kind of support helps me continue creating these little moments of positivity every day.So here’s the question:When was the last time you sat down with a friend and had a cup of coffee? Maybe today is a good day to get together and share…Good coffee.Good conversation.Good ideas. So the next time you sit down with a cup of coffee, take a moment to appreciate what it represents.Connection.Friendship.Conversation.And maybe, just maybe, a little inspiration.Support the show ➡ Buy me a coffee That’s going to do it for today. Jeremy Bentham - “Stretching his hand up to reach the stars, too often man forgets the flowers at his feet.” 17.09.2026 2minWelcome to the Daily Quote, the podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to you by the Great News podcast. Because great news should be heard, and the link is right here in the show notes.Support the show ➡ Buy me a coffee Today’s quote is attributed to Jeremy Bentham. He lived from 1748 to 1832 and was an English philosopher, jurist and social reformer best known as one of the founders of utilitarianism which is the ethical philosophy centered on maximizing happiness and minimizing suffering.Jeremy Bentham once said,“Stretching his hand up to reach the stars, too often man forgets the flowers at his feet.”This quote will probably hit home for many of us.There is nothing wrong with having ambition. Goals and objectives can keep us on track for what we truly want out of life. Reaching for the stars is a good thing in that context. The warning in this quote is that if we become so focused on distant goals we will stop noticing the good things we already have in our lives. The flowers at our feet are your family, friends, health, nature and the ability to stay present enough to enjoy the ordinary things. Of course the flowers can literally be flowers and if so… don’t forget to get a good wiff. The danger of focusing too much on the stars is that you may end up saying “I will take the time to enjoy life when I get there”. When I reach the next milestone or hit my big home run. But if you do that you may neglect what you already have and the price of reaching the stars may be too high, if you ever do reach them.So here’s the question:What are the “flowers at your feet” that you may be overlooking because you are so focused on reaching the stars?Remember: You can still reach for the stars as long as you notice the flowers and care for them in the process. In other words, don’t trample the flowers in pursuit of the stars. That’s going to do it for today. I’m Andrew McGivern signing off for now, but I’ll be back… tomorrow! Usually, I feature famous quotes from notable people. Einstein, Tony Robbins, Zig Zigglar, Helen Keler, etc.The only exception so far has been the quote from my friend Frank Cheung who said “It’s like a metaphor for life, every man stands alone”. I love that quote.Well today I’ve got another quote from someone I know personally. My brother, Rory McGivern.Rory is a business man, family guy and of course a huge Def Leppard fan.Today’s quote comes from many years ago when were essential still kids. I was reading a book (maybe a Tony Robbins book) and I read out a cool quote I found in the book.Rory said quotes are stupid. I said they are NOT. And he said they are just made up and anyone could make a quote. So I said ok give me a quote then. And Rory McGivern said….“He who smells the rose… gets a good wiff”Wow… MIND BLOWN !!!Rory may have said this off the top of his head as a joke. And even as way to mock the creation of quotes. But I believe he was tapping into Jung’s collective unconscious in that moment and he pulled out a piece of intellectual gold.“He who smells the rose, gets a good wiff”What Rory is actually saying here is that you have to take action. If you want a good wiff you have to get off your butt, find your rose and smell it.We all know people that sit around waiting for their big break. They are sitting on the couch saying maybe someday I’ll get a good wiff? They sit and wait and hope that the wind will blow just right and the smell of the rose will come right up to their lazy nostrils. What Rory is saying is don’t wait around for the wind. Because the wind may never come.Get off the couch and go get your good wiff.Even a dog knows that they have to take action to get a good wiff. My dog, Pepper, doesn’t wait around for a good wiff to appear right in front of her nose. She seeks it out and gets her nose right in there. And a dog has a sense of smell 10 000 to 100 0000 times more sensitive than humans. And they still don’t wait around for the wind to bring them a good wiff… Pepper pulls like crazy to get her nose as close as possible and she gets a good wiff.Hopefully your “good wiff” is different from Pepper’s.Maybe it is a promotion at your job.Maybe your “good wiff” is improved personal fitness.Maybe it is starting podcast. Or launching a new business.Whatever your “good wiff” is you can’t get it if you don’t smell the rose.He who smells the rose, gets a good wiff.So here’s the question:Whatever a “good wiff” means to you… what could you do right now to move you towards the rose. Because if you don’t have the rose you won’t get a good wiff.Today’s episode is 100% human generated. Roy H. Williams - “It’s hard to read the label when you’re inside the bottle.” 15.09.2026 3minWelcome to the Daily Quote, the podcast designed to kickstart your day in a positive way. Pat Flynn is a proponent of using masterminds and mentors and getting an outside perspective and this is the context he uses for today’s quote. The originator of the quote is Roy H. Williams, a best-selling author, marketing consultant and copywriter best known as the “Wizard of Ads” and for his long running Monday Morning Memo column and podcast.Roy H. Williams once said,“It’s hard to read the label when you’re inside the bottle.”This quote rings true on many levels…Roy Williams was referring to the blind spot founders and insiders have when crafting messaging and marketing material for their company. Being too close to the product makes you blind to what customers are actually looking for. When you are immersed in something you can see all the details and you’ve experienced the history of the project and the associated emotions. And your expertise can actually make the problem worse. You know your product inside out and your customer doesn’t.You know the industry jargon and your customer doesn’t.You know why something makes sense about your product and your customer has no idea!Sometimes you need to step outside the bottle in order to see your product from your customers point of view. And when you do that you can speak their language and at their level of knowledge. Both Pat Flynn and Roy H. Williams advise getting the help of someone on the outside.A mentor, a coach, a trusted friend, a business associate and even a customer.Sometimes a simple conversation with an outsider can help you to see something that you didn’t notice even though you’ve been staring at it for months. And this is true for any area of your life. Your bottle could be your career, your relationships, your habits, beliefs, identity, your financial situation. Or maybe your ability to connect with your audience if your a content creator.Have you ever noticed how easy it is to spot something your friend, spouse, coworker or business partner should be doing differently. But somehow they can’t see their own situation clearly? That is because you are outside their bottle! So here’s the question:What is something in your life that you might be too close to and you can’t see things clearly because you are inside the bottle? And who could you trust on the outside to help you read the label?Because sometimes a little outside help is all you need. That’s going to do it for today.
