129: Why Is Testosterone Still Off-Limits for Women? 20.09.2026 49minTestosterone in women is finally getting more attention, but what does that actually mean for women and their care? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Terri DeNeui to discuss the FDA’s focus on testosterone, why there still isn’t an FDA-approved testosterone treatment specifically for women, and the questions surrounding safety, dosing, and access. We also talk about symptoms of testosterone deficiency, why “normal” lab ranges don’t always tell the full story, and the larger conversation around medical freedom and individualized care. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why testosterone matters for women What the FDA is currently considering Why testosterone remains a controlled substance When symptoms can appear Why “normal” labs may not tell the whole story How dosing and delivery methods matter Where medical freedom fits into the conversation Tune in to hear Dr. Terri DeNeui’s perspective on where women’s testosterone care stands today, what still needs to change, and what patients should be asking. 128: Viral Hormone Trends: What’s Actually Worth Your Time? 13.09.2026 43minSocial media is full of hormone hacks promising better energy, easier weight loss, balanced hormones, and fewer symptoms. But how much of it is actually backed by science? In this episode, I’m breaking down seven viral trends, including cortisol cocktails, fiber maxing, pink salt, metabolism morning routines, and “hormone-balancing” foods, and separating reasonable health habits from overhyped claims. I also talk about the way social media approaches PCOS and perimenopause, and why oversimplifying complex hormone conditions can do more harm than good. If you’ve ever wondered whether the latest hormone trend is worth trying, this conversation will help you look at these claims with a little more context and a lot less TikTok influence. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why cortisol cocktails aren't what they claim to be The problem with suddenly “fiber maxing” What pink salt can actually do for you Whether a metabolism morning routine works The truth behind “hormone-balancing” foods Why PCOS weight-loss advice needs more nuance When a viral trend may be masking a bigger issue Tune in, subscribe to Hormones, Metabolism and You, and share this episode with someone who could use a little more context the next time a hormone hack hits their feed. 127: Birth Control Masterclass: The Mash-Up Every Woman Needs to Hear 06.09.2026 48minIn this mash-up episode, I’m bringing together key conversations about birth control, PCOS, PMS, and the hormonal changes women experience from their 20s through perimenopause. We unpack why birth control is so often used to manage symptoms, what it may be masking, and how hormones like estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, insulin, and cortisol all fit into the bigger picture. We also talk about the different birth control options women may consider as they get older and why the right approach can change throughout different stages of life. From painful and irregular periods to PCOS, weight struggles, low libido, anxiety, fatigue, and the transition into perimenopause, this mash-up brings together the questions women are asking and the answers they deserve to hear. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why birth control may be masking more than you realize The hormone connection behind PCOS and weight struggles What your period could be trying to tell you Why your 30s and 40s can bring unexpected changes The connection between cortisol, insulin, and androgens When painful or irregular periods deserve a closer look How gut health and stress fit into the hormone picture Why the same treatment may not make sense at every age Tune in for the full mash-up and hear these conversations come together in one place. 126: Health Care is So Broken - 3 Typical Patient Cases 30.08.2026 48minThe healthcare system is not designed to keep you well, and I am done pretending that is okay. In this episode, I am breaking from the usual format to talk honestly about why I believe healthcare in the United States has become so reactive instead of preventative, and how that approach is leaving people sick, frustrated, and without answers. I share my perspective as both a patient and a provider, including the ways insurance companies, healthcare systems, limited appointment times, and a diagnosis-by-diagnosis approach can keep providers from looking at the whole person. I also explain why symptoms and lab results cannot always be viewed in isolation, because our bodies do not operate in silos. Then, I walk through three patient scenarios that I see repeatedly in my practice: a 19-year-old struggling with PCOS symptoms and insulin resistance, a woman in her 30s dealing with fatigue, weight gain, sleep issues and brain fog who was told her labs were normal, and a woman in her 40s experiencing perimenopausal symptoms who was told she was too young for hormones. These stories reveal just how much can be missed when we only look at whether a number falls inside a laboratory's "normal" range instead of asking whether it actually makes sense for the person sitting in front of us. Most importantly, I want you to leave this episode knowing that you are not crazy, your symptoms matter, and you can become your own best advocate when the system isn't listening. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why "normal" lab results may not tell the whole story The connection between symptoms that seem completely unrelated What three very different patients had in common Why the approach to preventative care needs to change The piece of the puzzle that can be missed when diseases are treated separately Why some women are told they are fine when they know something isn't right What it really means to become your own best health advocate Why waiting until something is completely broken may be costing you years Resources & Links Order Dr. Cassie’s Book ‘Fix Your Gut, Fix Your Hormones’: https://guthormonefix.com/ Use code LISTEN10 for 10 % off your order on shopmodernendocrine.com 📲 Follow Dr. Cassie Smith & Modern Endocrine 💻 Website: https://www.modern-endocrine.com/ 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/modernendocrine_/ 🌟 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ModernEndocrine 📽️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@modernendocrine 🕹️ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@modernendocrine?lang=en 📰 Newsletter: https://linktr.ee/modernendocrine ➡️ Disclaimer: https://www.modernendocrineokc.com/disclaimer-6353 -
125: How to Dementia-Proof Your Brain: Dr. David Perlmutter on Hormones, Gut Health, and Inflammation 23.08.2026 1h 6minWhat if protecting your brain starts decades before memory problems ever appear? In this conversation, I sit down with neurologist and bestselling author Dr. David Perlmutter to talk about what current research says about dementia prevention, why metabolic health may play a much larger role than many people realize, and why waiting until cognitive symptoms develop may be waiting too long. We get into the connection between blood sugar, insulin resistance, inflammation, gut health, sleep, exercise, and brain function, along with why so many of these risk factors begin showing up in our 30s and 40s rather than later in life. We also spend time on topics that generate a lot of questions in my practice, including hormone therapy, women's brain health, alcohol, stimulants, and the current state of dementia treatments. Dr. Perlmutter shares his perspective on why prevention deserves more attention, how lifestyle interventions fit into the conversation alongside medical care, and what practical markers people can monitor to better understand their long-term brain health. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why brain health may be shaped long before memory loss ever begins How metabolic health and inflammation may influence cognitive function The relationship between gut health, sleep, and long-term brain resilience Why women face unique considerations when it comes to dementia risk How Dr. Perlmutter views bioidentical hormone therapy in the context of brain health What current evidence suggests about alcohol, stimulants, and cognitive wellness Which everyday health markers may provide insight into future brain health Why prevention may be more impactful than waiting for symptoms to appear If you're interested in protecting your brain health for the long term and understanding how everyday lifestyle choices fit into that picture, I think you'll love this episode. 124: Heart Disease Myths Exposed: Statins, LDL, Estradiol, Testosterone, & the Truth 16.08.2026 51minHeart disease is still the leading cause of death, yet many people are left wondering whether they're focusing on the right risk factors. In this episode, I sit down with board-certified cardiac surgeon Dr. Philip Ovadia to discuss how his perspective shifted from treating advanced heart disease in the operating room to helping people prevent it in the first place. We talk through common questions about cholesterol, LDL, statins, coronary calcium scores, and why he believes heart health requires looking beyond a single lab value to better understand metabolic health, inflammation, and insulin resistance. Topics We Cover in This Episode: What LDL cholesterol can and cannot tell you about heart disease risk How insulin resistance and inflammation fit into the bigger picture When a statin may make sense and when other factors deserve attention first The current conversation around bioidentical hormones and cardiovascular health Who should consider a coronary artery calcium scan and what the results can tell you Why metabolic health may be one of the most important pieces of heart disease prevention Practical questions to ask when evaluating your own cardiovascular risk Resources & Links Take the Quiz with Dr. Ovadia: https://ifixhearts.com/ Order Dr. Ovadia’s Books: https://ifixhearts.com/books/ Order Dr. Cassie’s Book ‘Fix Your Gut, Fix Your Hormones’: https://guthormonefix.com/ Use code LISTEN10 for 10 % off your order on shopmodernendocrine.com 📲 Follow Dr. Cassie Smith & Modern Endocrine 💻 Website: https://www.modern-endocrine.com/ 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/modernendocrine_/ 🌟 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ModernEndocrine 📽️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@modernendocrine 🕹️ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@modernendocrine?lang=en 📰 Newsletter: https://linktr.ee/modernendocrine ➡️ Disclaimer: https://www.modernendocrineokc.com/disclaimer-6353 -
123: Hashimoto’s, Thyroid Labs, and Exercise: Are You Helping Your Body or Stressing It More? 09.08.2026 1h 5minIf you have Hashimoto’s and feel like you’re doing everything “right” but somehow feeling worse, this episode is for you. I’m answering your most frequently asked questions about Hashimoto’s, exercise, thyroid labs, thyroid antibodies, medication adjustments, estrogen, and why symptoms don’t always match what your lab work says. Throughout our conversation, I explain why looking at one lab value or one symptom in isolation often leads to frustration, and why understanding the bigger picture is essential when managing thyroid disease. I also share ways to think about exercise, recovery, inflammation, medication tolerance, and the relationship between your thyroid, gut, hormones, metabolism, and stress response. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why exercising harder isn't always the best strategy for Hashimoto's How to recognize when your workouts are exceeding your body's recovery capacity Why thyroid antibodies can fluctuate without necessarily signaling that your condition is worsening How to interpret thyroid labs alongside symptoms instead of viewing them separately The connection between stress, gut health, blood sugar, hormones, and thyroid function Why some people feel overstimulated on thyroid medication even when their labs suggest they need more Order Dr. Cassie’s Book ‘Fix Your Gut, Fix Your Hormones’: https://guthormonefix.com/ Use code LISTEN10 for 10 % off your order on shopmodernendocrine.com 📲 Follow Dr. Cassie Smith & Modern Endocrine 💻 Website: https://www.modern-endocrine.com/ 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/modernendocrine_/ 🌟 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ModernEndocrine 📽️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@modernendocrine 🕹️ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@modernendocrine?lang=en 📰 Newsletter: https://linktr.ee/modernendocrine ➡️ Disclaimer: https://www.modernendocrineokc.com/disclaimer-6353 -
122: Drain Before You Detox: The Missing Link Between Gut Health, Hormones, & Mold Recovery with Marina Ortega (The Poop Fairy) 02.08.2026 47minIf you're dealing with constipation, bloating, brain fog, or you feel like every detox protocol makes you feel worse instead of better, this conversation is for you. In this episode, I'm joined by Marina Ortega, founder of Scottsdale Hydrotherapy and co-founder of Trust Your Gut, to talk about one piece of healing she believes is often overlooked: supporting your body's drainage pathways before asking it to detox. Marina shares her own journey through chronic constipation, mold exposure, and years of searching for answers before becoming a gut health educator. We also discuss what colon hydrotherapy actually is, how the lymphatic system, bile flow, and bowel function work together to support the body's natural detox pathways, and why so many people struggle to feel better even after trying supplements and cleanses. Marina also shares what she learned while recovering from severe mold exposure, her perspective on tools like castor oil packs and coffee enemas, and why she believes the gut-brain connection is an essential part of lasting healing. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why Marina says drainage should come before any detox protocol What colon hydrotherapy actually involves—and what to expect during a session How constipation can impact hormones, brain fog, and overall health The connection between the lymphatic system, bile flow, and detoxification What Marina learned from recovering from severe mold exposure How castor oil packs and coffee enemas fit into her wellness approach Why stress and nervous system regulation can show up as digestive symptoms Simple ways to support your body's natural elimination pathways Resources & Links Trust Your Gut: https://www.trustyourgut.shop/ Order Dr. Cassie’s Book ‘Fix Your Gut, Fix Your Hormones’: https://guthormonefix.com/ Use code LISTEN10 for 10 % off your order on shopmodernendocrine.com 📲 Follow Dr. Cassie Smith & Modern Endocrine 💻 Website: https://www.modern-endocrine.com/ 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/modernendocrine_/ 🌟 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ModernEndocrine 📽️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@modernendocrine 🕹️ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@modernendocrine?lang=en 📰 Newsletter: https://linktr.ee/modernendocrine ➡️ Disclaimer: https://www.modernendocrineokc.com/disclaimer-6353 -
121: Why Successful Men Are Secretly Running Themselves into the Ground: What Every Man and Spouse Needs to Hear 26.07.2026 48minWhat does it really mean when a man starts feeling constantly exhausted, loses motivation, struggles with brain fog, or notices changes in his physical and sexual health? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Stephen Sanders, founder of Whole Men's Health, to talk about why these symptoms deserve more attention and why men's health is about far more than testosterone alone. We discuss the growing number of younger men experiencing hormone and metabolic challenges, how stress, sleep, nutrition, relationships, and modern lifestyles all intersect, and why so many men delay asking for help until their symptoms become impossible to ignore. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why fatigue and brain fog may signal more than simply getting older The symptoms many men experience long before they seek medical help How stress, sleep, gut health, and hormones influence one another Why conversations about men's health often happen later than they should Practical ways couples can support each other's long-term health Why tracking biomarkers matters, even when you feel "fine" The foundational habits that consistently outperform the latest health trends How to approach sensitive health conversations with empathy instead of judgment If you're looking for a thoughtful conversation about men's health, relationships, and the habits that support long-term well-being, I hope you'll join us for this episode. 120: From PCOS to PMOS; Why Hormones Are Not the Only Problem 19.07.2026 33minIn this interview with Terri DeNeui, we explore why the conversation around PCOS is shifting toward a broader understanding of metabolic health with the emerging term PMOS. Rather than viewing irregular cycles, infertility, and hormone imbalances as isolated ovarian problems, we discuss how insulin resistance, gut health, inflammation, stress, and lifestyle factors may be driving many of the symptoms women experience. I also share why this updated perspective could change the way clinicians evaluate and support patients across different stages of life—not just during their reproductive years. We also spend time talking about practical treatment considerations, from comprehensive lab testing and lifestyle interventions to the appropriate role of GLP-1 medications. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why some experts are moving from the term PCOS to PMOS—and what that shift represents How insulin resistance and gut health may influence hormone balance Why irregular menstrual cycles deserve a broader metabolic evaluation The role inflammation and stress may play in hormone-related symptoms Why body composition can be a more meaningful measure than weight alone How to think about GLP-1 medications as one tool rather than a complete solution Practical lifestyle habits that support long-term metabolic and hormonal health Why treating symptoms without addressing underlying metabolic dysfunction may leave important questions unanswered If you're interested in a more comprehensive way of thinking about hormones, metabolism, and women's health, I think you'll find this conversation both practical and thought-provoking. 119: Beyond Sick Care: Why Insurance Isn’t Coming To Save You 12.07.2026 59minFor many people, the healthcare system becomes frustrating long before they receive a diagnosis. Symptoms are dismissed, lab work comes back "normal," and the next step is often another prescription rather than a conversation about why those symptoms developed in the first place. In this episode, I'm joined by board-certified anesthesiologist and hormone optimization specialist Dr. Mike Fortunato to discuss his journey from conventional medicine into functional medicine, and why he believes many patients are looking for something today's healthcare model wasn't designed to provide. Our conversation explores the realities of practicing medicine inside an insurance-driven system, the role hormones play in long-term health, and what Dr. Mike observed after years of caring for increasingly unhealthy surgical patients. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why "normal" lab results don't always reflect optimal health How Dr. Mike's own health challenges changed the way he practices medicine What anesthesiology taught him about the declining health of today's patients Why hormone optimization is about more than treating symptoms How insurance influences the care many patients receive The role lifestyle plays alongside hormone health Why prevention often receives less attention than disease management How patients can become stronger advocates for their own health If you've been searching for a broader perspective on healthcare, hormones, and long-term wellness, I hope you'll join us for this conversation. 118: Stop Starving, Start Healing: The Real Root Cause of Weight Loss Resistance 05.07.2026 54minWhat if the reason you're struggling with weight, low energy, or hormone symptoms isn't just about eating less and exercising more? In this episode, I sit down with functional medicine practitioner Dani Conway to talk about the bigger picture of metabolic health. We discuss why so many women are told their lab work is "normal" even when they still feel exhausted, inflamed, or stuck, and why looking beyond the scale often leads to better answers. Dani shares how her own health journey shaped the way she now helps women address gut health, hormones, inflammation, and metabolism with a personalized, root-cause approach rather than a one-size-fits-all plan. We explore the role digestion and detoxification play before focusing on hormones, why testing matters more than guessing, and how factors like stress, sleep, nervous system regulation, nutrition, exercise, and even peptide therapy fit into the conversation. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why gut health and detoxification may need attention before addressing hormone balance How to recognize signs that your body may not be processing nutrients or toxins efficiently Why "normal" lab results don't always tell the whole story What comprehensive testing can reveal beyond standard blood work Why stress and nervous system regulation can influence weight loss, even with healthy habits How to think about nutrition and exercise without relying on one-size-fits-all advice If you're looking for a more personalized way to think about hormones, metabolism, and sustainable health, I think you'll find plenty to consider in this conversation. 117. Perimenopause Is Wild: Symptoms, Support, and What Actually Helps 28.06.2026 53minPerimenopause and menopause affect every woman, yet many are still caught off guard by the wide range of symptoms that can come with this stage of life. In this episode, I sit down with nutritionist, menopause researcher, and author Andrea Donsky to discuss what she's learned from studying thousands of women and why so many continue to feel confused, dismissed, or unsupported when seeking answers. We explore common symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, sleep disruption, anxiety, memory issues, and weight changes, along with some of the lesser-known experiences that often go unrecognized. Andrea also shares her personal journey through perimenopause, the inspiration behind her book Nourishing Menopause, and practical ways women can better support themselves through nutrition, lifestyle habits, mindset, and self-advocacy. This conversation offers reassurance, validation, and a reminder that while every woman's experience is different, no one has to navigate it alone. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why perimenopause symptoms are often overlooked or misunderstood The most common symptoms women report experiencing What Andrea's research reveals about women's experiences with healthcare providers Why hot flashes aren't always the first sign of hormonal change The connection between stress, sleep, hormones, and weight fluctuations How mindset can influence the menopause experience Why community and shared experiences matter during this transition Practical ways to better support your body through perimenopause and menopause If you've been questioning changes in your mood, energy, sleep, memory, or weight, I hope this conversation helps connect some of the dots. 116: What Screen Time Is Really Doing to Your Eyes, Brain, and Stress Levels 21.06.2026 57minOne of the most overlooked aspects of health may be influencing how you think, learn, focus, perform, and even respond to stress every single day. In this episode, I sit down with neuro-optometrist Dr. Bryce Appelbaum to explore the difference between eyesight and vision, and why seeing 20/20 doesn't necessarily mean your visual system is functioning optimally. We discuss how the eyes and brain work together, the role vision plays in learning, reading, athletic performance, spatial awareness, and everyday confidence, and why many functional vision problems often go unrecognized. We also spend time talking about something that affects nearly all of us: screen time. Dr. Appelbaum explains what prolonged screen exposure is doing to our visual system, nervous system, sleep, stress response, and overall well-being. Topics We Cover in This Episode: How eyesight and vision are related, and why they're not the same thing The subtle signs that may point to an underlying functional vision problem Why screen fatigue may involve much more than tired eyes What vision has to do with focus, learning, reading, and information processing The connection between visual function, stress, and nervous system regulation Why some people struggle with motion sickness, bridges, tunnels, or spatial awareness How vision training differs from traditional eye care approaches Simple daily habits that may help support long-term visual health Whether you're a parent, athlete, professional, avid screen user, or simply interested in optimizing your health, this conversation offers a fascinating perspective on the connection between vision and whole-body wellness. 115: PCOS Has a New Name: Why It’s More Than an Ovarian Disorder 14.06.2026 42minIn this episode, I explain why PCOS is now better understood as Polyendocrine Metabolic Syndrome (PMOS). While the traditional name focuses on the ovaries, the reality is that this condition often extends far beyond reproductive health. I discuss why many women with PCOS don't actually have ovarian cysts, how the condition can affect everything from insulin and metabolism to cortisol, inflammation, gut health, and hormone balance, and why this updated framework may lead to more accurate diagnoses and more personalized care. I also walk through the different patterns I commonly see in clinical practice, including insulin-resistant, lean, inflammatory, adrenal, post-pill, postpartum, and mixed presentations. We explore why women are so often overlooked when they don't fit the typical PCOS profile, the lab markers that can provide a more complete picture of what's happening beneath the surface, and why understanding the root drivers of symptoms matters. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Terri DeNeui to discuss the bigger picture behind cardiovascular risk. We talk through the limitations of looking at LDL cholesterol in isolation, the importance of factors like inflammation, insulin resistance, ApoB, lipoprotein(a), calcium scores, and lifestyle habits, and why a more comprehensive assessment may be necessary before deciding on treatment options. We also discuss the role statins can play, who may benefit from them, and why individualized care matters when evaluating cardiovascular health. We also explore the connection between hormones and metabolic health. Dr. DeNeui explains how changes in estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone can influence cholesterol, blood pressure, body composition, and overall wellbeing. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why cholesterol numbers rarely tell the whole story The cardiovascular markers many people have never heard of What calcium scores can and cannot tell you How insulin resistance often shows up long before diabetes The relationship between menopause, hormones, and changing cholesterol levels Why gut health keeps showing up in conversations about chronic disease The role estrogen plays in men's health and performance Questions worth asking when evaluating your long-term cardiovascular risk Whether you're trying to better understand your own lab work, navigate conversations about statins, or learn more about the connection between hormones and overall health, this episode offers a thoughtful discussion on some of today's most debated topics in preventive medicine. In this episode, I sit down with OB-GYN Dr. Johnny Peet for a powerful and nuanced conversation about oral birth control, hormone health, and the risks many women are never fully informed about, especially as they enter their 40s and 50s. We unpack the real differences between oral contraceptives and progesterone-only IUDs, why birth control pills can impact testosterone, mood, sleep, thyroid function, and gut health, and why the conversation around women’s health needs to become far more individualized. We also dive into the difficult transition of perimenopause, why so many women feel dismissed or confused during this phase, and the important questions every woman should ask before staying on hormonal birth control long term. 111: Beyond the Labs: The Metabolic Clues Behind Fatigue, Weight Gain & Thyroid Issues 17.05.2026 38minIn this conversation, I sit down with Dr. James LaValle to unpack the deeper metabolic patterns driving symptoms like fatigue, thyroid dysfunction, weight gain, hormone imbalances, brain fog, inflammation, and low energy. We dive into why the body cannot be viewed as isolated systems and how stress hormones, insulin, gut health, thyroid function, sex hormones, and inflammation are all deeply connected. Dr. LaValle shares how his Metabolic Code framework helps identify where people should actually begin when they feel overwhelmed by symptoms and conflicting health advice. We also have a great discussion about gut health as one of the biggest hidden drivers behind hormone dysfunction and metabolic chaos. We talk about GLP-1 medications, the right and wrong way to use peptides, why muscle mass matters more than most people realize, and how people can create real change without chasing quick fixes.
