Before starting the Book of Numbers, I wanted to reflect on the importance of the Bible and God’s Word for Catholics and their everyday lives. We see the Israelites being led by God through the wilderness in a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. God institutes an ordinance for the Israelites to consecrate their firstborn sons to God in remembrance of God sparing their firstborn from the tenth plague in Egypt. When Pharaoh confronts the Israelites at the Red Sea, God parts the sea, the Israelites cross to the other side, and the entire Egyptian army is drowned in the sea after going in after the Israelites. We see God instituting the Passover and setting the start of the Israelite religious calendar. The Israelites wait in hope of their deliverance by God from Egyptian slavery. God will pass over the Israelites and kill all the firstborn of Egypt in this 10th and final plague. The Egyptians then set the Israelites free and urge them to leave in haste. We see Moses’ first failed attempt with the Pharaoh, and Moses feeling all the weight, discouragement and insecurities. He shares this with God, and God reassures Moses, and in turn Moses to the Israelites, that the Israelites’ deliverance is assured. To be still and know that he is God and will deliver what he promised in the covenant. Pharaoh increases the burden on the Israelites by making them find their own straw to make their bricks. We see God calling Moses from the burning bush to set the Israelites free from their slavery in Egypt. God tells Moses his divine name, I AM WHO I AM. Moses tried to get out of doing this task that God wants him to do, and God reassures Moses. Moses and his brother Aaron will go to Pharaoh and Aaron is called by God to meet and reunite with Moses in the wilderness. Today we are discussing Exodus chapters 1-2 in the Catholic Bible and reflecting on these events from a today perspective. We see the House of Jacob, the Israelites greatly blessed in Egypt, multiplying exceedingly until the land was full of Israelites. The new Pharaoh sees their great numbers and is afraid they could become too powerful, so he tries to kill all the male Israelite babies. Moses is born and his mother defies the Pharaoh’s orders, first hiding him, and then sending him down the Nile River in a basket. The Pharaoh’s daughter saves and adopts Moses. When he is an adult, Moses kills an Egyptian and flees to Midian, where he marries Zipporah and has a son, Gershom. Jacob then gives blessings and curses to his remaining sons according to their good or bad life choices and actions. Joseph officially and formally forgives his brothers. Jacob and Joseph both die in Egypt, Jacob being buried in Canaan, and Joseph instructing that he be taken for burial later after God takes all the Israelites out of Egypt. We see in these chapters that God appears again to Jacob to reassure him that he should go to Egypt, that he will be with him there and will bless him greatly. He also reassures him that he will see Joseph again before he dies in Egypt. Jacob and his entire family (70 persons) enter and settle into Egypt. The famine is so severe that the Egyptians sell everything, including themselves, to survive. God orchestrates all events in his great plan for the Israelites, and he sets everything up for the upcoming slavery and Exodus of the Israelites.     Welcome to Episode 21 of the Catholic Bible Daily Reflections Podcast (Daily Reflection #21). Today we are discussing Genesis chapters 44-45 of the NRSV version of the Catholic Bible and reflecting on these chapters from a today perspective. We see in these chapters that the brothers appear repentant to Joseph, but he devises one last test. Joseph sends all the brothers home, but instructs his servants to put his silver cup into Benjamin’s sack. After the brothers leave, his servant overtakes them and accuses them of theft, and they head back to Egypt. The cup was found in Benjamin’s sack so Jacob pleads to take Benjamin’s place as slave to Joseph. Joseph finally reveals himself to his brothers, describes God’s plan and the continuing famine, and directs them to return to Egypt to live and survive the famine. Jacob learns Joseph is alive and we leave off in the chapter with all the family about to begin their journey and new life in Egypt. I hope you enjoy today’s discussion ❤️

Today we are discussing Genesis chapters 42 and 43 in the NRSV version of the Catholic Bible and reflecting on these events from a today perspective. We see that Jacob’s sons now come face to face with Joseph. They do not recognize Joseph, but he recognizes them. He puts them to the test, and he sees their efforts to repent from their sins against Joseph. He keeps Simeon in the prison while directing the brothers to return to Egypt with the youngest brother, Benjamin., which they do. Joseph, a good and faithful servant of God, is on a path of forgiveness with his brothers, and he is now finally sees Benjamin again. I hope you enjoy today’s discussion ❤️

    Welcome to Episode 19 of the Catholic Bible Daily Reflections Podcast (Daily Reflection #19). Today we are discussing Genesis chapters 40-41 of the NRSV version of the Catholic Bible and reflecting on these events from a today perspective. We see in chapters 40 and 41 that Joseph, while still in prison on a false charge, correctly interprets the dreams of two prisoners. Later, Joseph interprets the dreams of the pharaoh, and Joseph presents a reasonable plan to the pharaoh to survive the coming famine foretold by God in the dreams. Pharaoh elevates Joseph to power, to become pharaoh’s number two man in all of Egypt to oversee Joseph’s plan for the famine. Joseph is then married to an Egyptian daughter of pharaoh’s priest, and has two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. These two sons will be brought into God‘s covenant and inheritance later by their grandfather, Jacob, as we will see in later chapters.I hope that you enjoy today’s discussion ❤️
