Rojava: Why Was the Revolution Defeated? 24.08.2026 1ч 42минIn July 2012, the Kurds living in northeastern Syria, led by the Syrian section of the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), declared their autonomy in what became known as the Rojava Revolution. For the first time in their history the Syrian Kurds became masters over their own lives and destinies, and ruled their own homeland. The Rojava Revolution at its peak was celebrated by some as a living example of anarchism in practice. It attracted the attention and raised the hopes of many radicalised youth on the left around the world. Now, tragically, most of the gains of the revolution are being undone, under the blows of the Islamist regime in Syria. Although local councils were elected, and an armed militia composed of both men and women was formed, the revolution never proceeded to expropriate the landlords and capitalists. Fred Weston will explain how all this unfolded, analysing how the ideas of the leader of the PKK – and its offshoot in Syria – Abdullah Öcalan, contributed to the stalling, and subsequent defeat, of the revolution. We need to learn from this experience and draw out the lessons for revolutionary communists.🫵 Join the Revolutionary Communist International:https://marxist.com/join-us.htm 📚 Marxist literature:https://wellred-books.com/📸 Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/revcomintern/💬 Twitter:https://x.com/revcomintern/ -
How Marx Became a Marxist 20.08.2026 1ч 45минScientific socialism did not spring from the mind of the young Marx like Athena from the head of Zeus. The development of Marxism – its method and fundamental ideas – was the result of a process driven by a combination of factors. The major events of the first half of the nineteenth century in Europe; the feverish development of capitalism in Great Britain; the first independent mobilizations of the working class in France (and elsewhere); the influence of the ideas of Hegel, Feuerbach and the “utopian socialists”: these were the main premises Marx’s doctrine. This talk – given by leading member of the PCR in France, Jerôme Metellus – will focus on his philosophical method, for it is upon this that the entire body of ideas of scientific socialism depends. Marxism marks a profound break in the entire history of philosophy. As Marx emphasized in the 11th of his Theses on Feuerbach, our philosophy seeks not only to interpret the world, but to transform it.🫵 Join the Revolutionary Communist International:https://marxist.com/join-us.htm 📚 Marxist literature:https://wellred-books.com/📸 Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/revcomintern/💬 Twitter:https://x.com/revcomintern/ -
Mao’s Anti-Imperialism: Lessons for Today 20.08.2026 1ч 31минWe are often criticised by Maoists, or those at least sympathetic to Mao, as being nitpickers subjecting real revolutions to unrealistic purity tests. They say that in doing so, we effectively side with western imperialism, and fail to recognise the heroic anti-imperialist work of Mao and the Chinese Communist Party. If Mao was such an exemplar of anti-imperialism, how do we explain the Sino-Soviet Split, in which the world’s two largest planned economies fought against one another instead of uniting against imperialism? How do we explain Mao’s resulting embrace of Nixon and the precursor to the EU as part of his struggle with the USSR?Why did these strange events take place, and what do they tell us about ‘Socialism in One Country? Why does Mao have such a strong reputation as an anti-imperialist if he collaborated with imperialist countries? Is China’s rise as an imperialist power a contradiction of Maoism, or a logical consequence? What are the relevant lessons for today’s epoch of imperialist proxy wars and the rise of China as imperialist? This talk by Daniel Morley will answer all these questions and more.🫵 Join the Revolutionary Communist International:https://marxist.com/join-us.htm 📚 Marxist literature:https://wellred-books.com/📸 Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/revcomintern/💬 Twitter:https://x.com/revcomintern/ -
1929 and the Great Depression 20.08.2026 2ч 22минThe 1929 Wall Street crash was a defining moment. It precipitated the slump of 1929-31, the deepest slump ever experienced by capitalism. Of course, the bourgeois economists attempt to cover up the real reasons for the slump. The aim of this talk is to explain not only what happened but its causes in the endemic crisis of capitalist overproduction.Rob Sewell in this talk will explore the consequences of the slump and how it also ushered in the Great Depression of the 1930s. Above all, we need to learn the lessons for today, which have never been more relevant with many of the symptoms of the crash emerging at this time.👉 www.marxist.com/join👉 https://www.youtube.com/@revcomintern -
Marxism & Art 20.08.2026 2ч 21минMarxism is often caricatured as a dull, grey theory, narrowly focused on politics and economics. In fact the opposite is true.As revolutionaries we are not only fighting for bread, but to emancipate the enormous cultural treasures of human civilisation which, today, are in the hands of a small minority. As Leon Trotsky put it, “not by politics alone does man thrive”. Communists must take a keen interest in art and culture, which are integral parts of the development of human society. In this talk Alan Woods, leading theoretician of the Revolutionary Communist International, will examine some of the great revolutions in art and society, and the role of art in the emancipation of mankind.👉 www.marxist.com/join👉 https://www.youtube.com/@revcomintern -
Defend the Cuban Revolution! 20.08.2026 2ч 25минThe Cuban Revolution is facing its most dangerous period ever. Since the beginning of the year, US imperialism has massively ramped up its decades-long assault by enacting an oil blockade, bullying Latin American countries to expel Cuban doctors and implementing secondary sanctions (forcing hotel operators and mining companies from Spain, Canada, Australia and other countries out of the island), threatening military invasion and indicting Raul Castro. In this context, the Cuban leadership has approved a series of economic measures which, if implemented, would mean the restoration of capitalism. What is the history of the Cuban Revolution and what are its accomplishments? Why do we say it is the duty of communists all over the world to defend it? And how can it be saved? Leading comrade Jorge Martin will introduce this vital discussion.👉 www.marxist.com/join👉 https://www.youtube.com/@revcomintern -
Lenin and Trotsky: What They Really Stood For 20.08.2026 1ч 49минDecades of ideological struggle inside the revolutionary movement in Russia culminated in the successful revolution of 1917. In the heat of that revolution, Lenin and Trotsky found themselves in full agreement on the tasks facing the movement. Trotsky joined the Bolshevik Party and the two revolutionaries led the October Revolution, which transformed human history. After Lenin’s death, Trotsky’s past differences with Lenin were dragged up, distorted and put to use in the factional struggle against Trotsky. But the struggle against ‘Trotskyism’ in reality severed the ideas of the Communist movement not just from those of Trotsky, but also those of Lenin and Marxism. This legacy is one we live with to this day, with continued distortions of not just the ideas of Trotsky, but also those of Lenin. This is why Wellred is this year republishing Lenin & Trotsky – What They Really Stood For to defend the genuine ideas of Lenin and Trotsky against slanders and misconceptions. This will serve a new generation of revolutionaries in the ideas that shook the world. To introduce this vital topic, we will have Niklas Albin Svensson speaking – a leading member of the Revolutionary Communist International.👉 www.marxist.com/join👉 https://www.youtube.com/@revcomintern -
The Epstein Class Exposed: Their Morals and Ours 20.08.2026 1ч 58минThe Epstein scandal exposes the full moral decay of the capitalist class. For the rich and powerful, power comes with a sense of total impunity to exploit the most vulnerable and a rejection of common moral principles. In the face of the rottenness of the Epstein class, ordinary people are beginning to question the very morality of the system in which we live. This talk by Hélène Bissonnette – leading member of the Revolutionary Communist Party in Canada – will explain how morality develops, its hypocritical nature under class society, and the crisis of bourgeois morality today.👉 www.marxist.com/join👉 https://www.youtube.com/@revcomintern -
Shostakovich: The Musical Voice of the Russian Revolution 20.08.2026 1ч 43минClassical music may seem a world apart from revolutionary politics — but it isn’t.The legacy of Dmitri Shostakovich has been the subject of a veritable war of interpretations in the half-century since his death. As an opponent of Stalin’s regime, he is often portrayed as an anti-communist, opposed to everything the USSR stood for. Others, noting his decision to remain in the Soviet Union and compose works that resonated with the needs of society, paint him as a Stalinist stooge — a puppet of the CPSU. Neither of these portrayals is even remotely accurate. In this talk, Peter Kwasiborski, leading member of the RCP, will explore the life and music of Shostakovich — and his true legacy: that of the musical conscience of the genuine ideals of the October Revolution. A legacy that should be upheld and cherished by the Bolsheviks of today.👉 www.marxist.com/join👉 https://www.youtube.com/@revcomintern -
The Rise and Fall of Social Democracy 20.08.2026 2ч 27минSocial Democracy in its early days swore allegiance to Marxism. In many countries it became the main party of the working class. But due to the subjective weaknesses of its leaders – lacking theoretical clarity – and the pressures of the powerful economic boom of the 1890s through to the First World war, Social Democracy abandoned the ideas of revolution and moved towards reformism. They then went on to betray one revolution after another, playing the role of strike-breakers and holding back the working class. This in turn prepared the ground for the rise of fascism. After the Second World War, on the back of the unprecedented post-war boom, Social Democracy had a new lease of life, becoming once again a dominant force within the labour movement. However, once that boom ended in the 1970s, its leaders were once again called on to put out the fires of the class struggle. They have governed carrying out the policies demanded by the capitalist class, thus losing much of the support they once had.Fred Weston will explain, from a Marxist point of view, why all this happened and what needs to be built today.👉 www.marxist.com/join👉 https://www.youtube.com/@revcomintern -
The Origins of Marxist Economics 20.08.2026 2ч 29минMarx and Engels did not develop their ideas – the ideas of scientific socialism – in a vacuum. Rather, their theoretical conclusions were a synthesis of the most advanced ideas of their time. This included the revolutionary kernel contained within Hegel’s dialectical philosophy; the bold visions of the French socialists; and the scientific approach of the ‘classical’ economists – including, first and foremost, figures like Adam Smith and David Ricardo in Britain.Marx’s magnum opus, Capital, was in many respects a reply to his bourgeois economic predecessors; a critique of ‘political economy’, as the science of economics was known at the time. Many of the key, foundational ideas and axioms within this work were first expounded by Smith and Ricardo – most notably, the labour theory of value, which Marx took up and developed as the basis for his analysis of the capitalist mode of production. In this talk, Adam Booth – co-author of Understanding Marx’s Capital – explores the pre-history and evolution of Marx’s economic thought; discusses the ideas of his economic predecessors, including their limits and contradictions; and explains the fundamentals of Marxist economic theory, which has never been more relevant and necessary, in this time of deepening capitalist crisis.🫵 Join the Revolutionary Communist International:https://marxist.com/join-us.htm 📚 Marxist literature:https://wellred-books.com/🎧 Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/68nGNHz5lB8UZXICGIDMva?si=682ef70551644443 📱 Apple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/against-the-stream/id1777793987 📸 Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/revcomintern/💬 Twitter:https://x.com/revcomintern/ -
Building the Revolutionary Communist International 20.08.2026 4ч 11мин“The most mature revolutionary situation without a revolutionary party of due stature and without correct leadership is the same as a knife without a blade.” These words of wisdom from Leon Trotsky apply a hundredfold in the current period of unprecedented capitalist crisis. We have an historic duty to lay the foundations of a world party of communist revolution, capable of navigating the stormy seas of war, revolution and counter-revolution. For this, we need to maintain our firm emphasis on Marxist theory: the only tool capable of explaining the tumultuous state of politics. We also need to find a road to the advanced layers of workers and youth, who are witnessing their futures sacrificed on the altar of capital.Since our founding congress in 2024, our international has taken huge strides forward by following this approach. We have extended our influence in every corner of the planet! We have a presence in around 60 countries and our analysis reaches hundreds of thousands of class fighters through our articles, podcasts and social media activity. This session led by Ben Curry will give an overview of the development of the RCI, laying out the main objectives and priorities facing our comrades in the coming period.🫵 Join the Revolutionary Communist International:https://marxist.com/join-us.htm 📚 Marxist literature:https://wellred-books.com/📸 Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/revcomintern/💬 Twitter:https://x.com/revcomintern/ -
The Yugoslav Revolution 20.08.2026 2ч 28минThe victory of the Resistance against Nazi-fascism in Yugoslavia was undoubtedly one of the most important revolutionary outcomes of the Second World War. The partisans, led by Tito, were propelled into power by the heroic uprising of the Balkan masses against the joint occupation by Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. Capitalism in the Balkans, except for Greece, was overthrown. The establishment of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia represented a gigantic step forward for the masses in the Balkans. Tito and the Yugoslav party emerged as the most prominent Communist Party outside of the Soviet Union. However, in 1948 Stalin’s Cominform expelled Tito and the Yugoslav party, to the dismay and surprise of the Yugoslav communists and of large layers of the communist movement. The so-called Stalin-Tito clash precipitated the Stalinist movement in the first crisis after the USSR’s triumphal victory over Nazi-fascism.But what was Yugoslavia? Why did Stalin and Tito clash? What did this conflict reveal about the nature of Stalinism and the constellation of deformed workers’ states arising from the Second World War? These will all be answered by leading member of the Revolutionary Communist International, Francesco Merli.👉 www.marxist.com/join👉 https://www.youtube.com/@revcomintern -
Progress, Decline, and the Marxist View of History 20.08.2026 2ч 22минHunger, war, inequality – in politics, the press and in popular culture, talk of decline is everywhere. Is this just the latest chapter in a story as old as civilisation itself? For centuries, historians and philosophers have tried to explain the rise and fall of civilisations, and answer the question: ‘Can we speak of progress in history?’ It was Marx and Engels who finally gave a truly scientific answer to this question, and broke through the dead end reached by the thinkers of their day.In this talk, Josh Holroyd will set out the fundamental principles of historical materialism – the Marxist view of history – which looks at history as a dialectical process, driven not by the ideas of ‘great men’ but by the development of the productive forces and the class struggle. To understand this process, and our own role in it, is the most urgent task of our time.🫵 Join the Revolutionary Communist International:https://marxist.com/join-us.htm 📚 Marxist literature: https://wellred-books.com/📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/revcomintern/💬 Twitter: https://x.com/revcomintern/ -
In Defence of the Enlightenment 20.08.2026 1ч 52минThe Age of Enlightenment was a high point in human thought. Today we are in the midst of an ideological struggle against the irrationality of capitalism, and here we as Marxists stand as defenders of the very essence of the Enlightenment. But not only that. This exceptional chapter in human history is a treasure trove from which we can arm ourselves in the struggle for a communist society. To introduce this topic, we will have Rasmus Jeppesen from the Revolutionært Kommunistisk Parti (RKP) in Denmark.👉 www.marxist.com/join👉 https://www.youtube.com/@revcomintern -

This talk will look at the rise of fascism to power in the 1920’s and 1930’s, to answer the questions: what is fascism? How do we fight the right wing? And where is the world heading? These questions will be answered by Ylva Vinberg, a leading member of the RKP in Sweden.👉 www.marxist.com/join👉 https://www.youtube.com/@revcomintern -
Philosophy and Science: A New Era in Cosmology 20.08.2026 2ч 3минA new era is opening in cosmology, brought to us by powerful instruments like the James Webb Space Telescope and the DESI instrument. These technological marvels are extending a piercing view deeper and with more precision than we have ever had access to before into our awesome, expansive, infinite universe. And as our horizons extend, the old cosmology – that of the Big Bang which has reigned as the consensus since its invention by a Belgian priest-astronomer a century ago – is ever more clearly a theory in crisis. Why are we discussing this at The School of Communism? Because the working class needs a philosophy. It needs a party armed with an independent worldview, a scientific worldview, if it is to challenge the ruling class for supremacy. How we conduct science, how we look upon the cosmos and our relationship to the cosmos – these are profound philosophical questions. And today, the old cosmological views – which are bound up with idealistic philosophical prejudices that even find their way into the sciences during this epoch of capitalist decay – those views are in crisis. A revolution is being prepared as the Big Bang is being tested and found wanting. In this talk given by Ben Curry – a leading member of the Revolutionary Communist International – we will look back at the philosophy of science, how revolutionary materialists look upon the cosmos, the laws of scientific progress, and how educated men and women, if they do not have their own conscious philosophy, are not immune from the philosophical moods and prejudices that hold sway over society.👉 www.marxist.com/join👉 https://www.youtube.com/@revcomintern -
France 1936: Reform or Revolution? 20.08.2026 1ч 42минIn May of 1936, the Popular Front won the French general elections. A wave of strikes erupted in the weeks following the election. During what was at that time the most massive general strike of French history, French workers won huge concessions from the ruling class, including the 40 hour weeks and – for the first time – paid vacations !These events have become a myth amongst the French Left and workers movement, linked to victory and progress in the minds of many Left activists and radical workers. But, as communist revolutionaries, our duty is not to commemorate but to understand the reality of this process, which all the reformists leaderships since 1936 made their best effort to hide and distort. We need to understand what really was the Popular front? Why did it ultimately collapse? What was the significance of the strikes of May and June 1936? Why were most of their conquests quickly contested and destroyed? Why did this historic period of mobilisation of the French working class ended with the instauration of a bonapartist dictatorship under Marshall Petain? And, most importantly, what lessons can these events offer to all those who want to overthrow capitalism today? These questions will all be answered by Jules Legendre, leading member of the Parti Communiste Révolutionnaire (PCR) in France. 👉 www.marxist.com/join👉 https://www.youtube.com/@revcomintern -
Hugo Chavez and the Bolivarian Revolution 20.08.2026 2ч 29минThe US imperialist attack on January 3 has brought Venezuela back to the limelight. For many years, the Bolivarian revolution was a source of inspiration for millions of workers, peasants, and youth across Latin America and beyond. Hugo Chavez was an outstanding revolutionary figure who wanted to use the country’s oil wealth to improve the living conditions of ordinary Venezuelans, and drew the conclusion that this could only be achieved by moving towards socialism.Chavez and his movement faced the wrath of the capitalist oligarchy and imperialism. They organised a military coup in April 2002, a two-month national lockout, and sabotage of the oil industry to crush the revolution. Time and again, they were defeated by the direct participation of the masses through mass demonstrations, revolutionary organisation, factory occupations, and workers’ control. However, the Venezuelan revolution was never completed. Eventually, the gains were squandered and betrayed under the leadership of Nicolas Maduro. In this talk by Jorge Martin (leading member of the Revolutionary Communist International), we will discuss a full balance-sheet of the Bolivarian revolution, the role played by Hugo Chavez, the shortcomings of the process, and how it came to an end, as well as the participation of the International Marxist Tendency (now RCI). There are crucial lessons to be learned.👉 www.marxist.com/join👉 https://www.youtube.com/@revcomintern -
250 Years Since America’s First Revolution 20.08.2026 1ч 49минFor 250 years, the American Revolution has inspired millions around the world. Nonetheless, some argue that it was little more than a power struggle between two groups of white property owners. Superficially, there is some truth to this. However, as historical materialists, our task is to delve beneath the surface. We must unravel the inner contradictions, fundamental processes, economic transformations, and class struggles that ultimately motivated and drove the revolution.Flowing from Trotsky’s definition, it was the decisive entry of the masses onto the stage of history that stamped this process as revolutionary. Whether they were clear about their aims or not, millions of ordinary Americans awoke to political and social consciousness and seized their destiny in an attempt to change society. In short, what unfolded in Britain’s North American colonies was complex and contradictory. Just as the American Civil War was the country’s Second Revolution, the First Revolution was its first Civil War. It was not purely an anti-colonial war for national liberation, democracy, and republicanism. Nor was it simply a war over land and the expropriation of Indigenous peoples and for the extension of chattel slavery. It was all of this and more—a profound, though incomplete, political and social revolution. This will all be explained by John Peterson, author of “Revolution and Counterrevolution in America” and “Colossus”, as well as leading member of the Revolutionary Communists of America.👉 www.marxist.com/join👉 https://www.youtube.com/@revcomintern
