  Welcome to week 16 of my 16-week guided slow read of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak.The epilogue of our slow read through Boris Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago — a short chapter, about twelve pages, and there turns out to be rather a lot in it.It's 1943. Misha Gordon and Nicky Dudorov are officers now, fourteen years after Yury's death, sheltering overnight in a barn in the ruins of Chern. Over a quiet conversation at sunrise they work through everything that has happened to them since: Dudorov's fiancée Christina, who slipped behind German lines, blew up a stronghold and was hanged for it — and has now been canonised by the Church; the camps; the penal battalion where survival was the price of freedom; and the Yezhov terror, and why a failure that couldn't be admitted had to be buried under something worse.Then there's Tanya, the regimental laundry girl, and the resemblance Gordon can't stop noticing.In this episode I look at Gordon's line about how a thing conceived in a lofty, ideal manner turns coarse and material — Rome out of Greece, the Revolution out of the Russian Enlightenment — and at the closing scene in Moscow, five or ten years later, where the two men leaf through a book of Yury's writings and feel something like happiness. If it's ten, we're in 1953, the year Stalin died. And I get into the irony that Pasternak himself came off worse under Khrushchev than he ever did under Stalin.One last thing: although this is the epilogue, it isn't quite the end.   Welcome to week 15 of my 16-week guided slow read of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak.Chapter 15 of our slow read through Boris Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago — the Conclusion. Buckle in.Yury drags himself back to Moscow at the start of the NEP, and Pasternak doesn't waste time with coincidence: the first person he runs into is Vassya Brykin, the boy from the train to the Urals, now orphaned in his burned-out home village. In Moscow, Yury moves into the old Sventitsky flat — the one where Lara shot Komarovsky — falls in with the yard porter Markel's daughter Marina, and starts a second family. A chance meeting with his half-brother Yevgraf turns things around: a job, money, and a burst of creative energy that has Yury pouring poetry and prose onto the page faster than he can write it down.Then it ends the way you know it has to. A hot, airless tram, a shape from his past walking past unaware, and Yury's heart finally gives out — closing the circle Pasternak opened with his mother's funeral on page one. Lara appears at the coffin by coincidence, again, and calls it "preordained."   Welcome to week 14 of my 16-week guided slow read of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak.Yury and Lara flee to the freezing old house at Varykino for a few last stolen days together — days of writing by moonlight, wolves howling beyond the trees, and a love both of them know is running out of time. Then Komarovsky arrives with an offer, a lie and a train ticket east.This is one of the great chapters of the novel: the Varykino idyll, Yury's night-time poetry sessions and Pasternak's own account of where poems come from, the wolves that grow into a dragon, Lara's departure, and the astonishing final movement in which Strelnikov walks out of the darkness for one long night of confession. It ends with one of the most quietly devastating images in the book.Along the way I dig into the real history behind Komarovsky's escape plan — the short-lived Far Eastern Republic (1920–22) and what "safety" out east actually meant — plus Pasternak's double life between his wife Zinaida and Olga Ivinskaya, drawn from Anna Pasternak's Lara, and why translation was both Pasternak's livelihood and the thing keeping him from his novel. A reader's diary written in Ukraine on the first morning of the 2022 invasion gives us the frame: "People only do that which they can't not do."From there: two enemy soldiers carrying the same psalm to opposite ends, Yury's argument with Liberius about whether any theory can contain life, and Pamphil Palykh — a man who has killed without flinching, undone by the one death that follows him home.Where do you think it's heading — does Yury get away from Liberius?
