  • She Came Home from the Hospital to a House of Clutter (then one question changed her life!) | Clutterbug Episode #343 14.09.2026 51мин
Ever wonder why you can declutter your house and it just... comes back? In this episode, I sit down with Katy Joy Wells — author, decluttering expert, and host of The Maximized Minimalist podcast — to talk about the emotional root of clutter and why most decluttering advice only scratches the surface. Katy opens up about the accident that changed everything for her — a head-on collision that left her not knowing if her husband would survive, and coming home that same day to face the clutter she'd been avoiding for years. It's an honest, emotional conversation, and it completely reframes what decluttering is actually about. We get into: ✨ Katy's "clutter onion" — the four layers of clutter (superficial, scarcity, sentimental, and identity) and why the deepest layer is almost never about the stuff ✨ Why some of us can declutter one room like a pro and freeze completely in another ✨ My own identity clutter — the home decor I couldn't let go of, and the "someday I'll be different" stuff I held onto for years ✨ How to write your own personal definition of clutter so you stop needing outside permission to let something go ✨ A 10-minute challenge you can do today to start cutting through the clutter that's actually about something deeper If you've ever felt like you're the only one who can't seem to keep it together, this conversation is a reminder that clutter isn't a character flaw — it's usually just an unanswered question. Grab Katy's new book wherever books are sold, follow her on Instagram @katiejoywells, and check out her podcast The Maximized Minimalist — you'll find me over there as a recent guest! • Why Changing Your Space Changes Who You Are (Not Just How It Looks) | Clutterbug Episode #342 07.09.2026 1ч 3мин
Hey Clutterbugs! Want to know why decluttering and organizing your home can change your entire life — not just your space? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Angela Duckworth, bestselling author of Grit and her brand new book Situated, to talk about the science behind why changing your environment is more powerful than "just trying harder." Angela breaks down the Three Boxes model, and honestly, it explained my entire life back to me. We get into why willpower is overrated, why "just try harder" culture is kind of a trap, and why editing your space (not forcing more discipline) is the real secret to lasting change. We also get real with topics like . . . ✨ My own decluttering "rock bottom" and how changing my environment changed who I was, not just how my house looked ✨ Why I think weight loss surgery is a situational fix, not a shortcut — and why shame around GLP-1s and other "easier" paths needs to go ✨ Getting diagnosed with ADHD at 40 and how surrounding myself with the right people (situational change!) helped me finally build the life and career I wanted ✨ Why grit isn't about intensity — it's about consistency, and why my whole "do it badly on purpose" philosophy might actually be a form of grit after all If you've ever felt like you're failing no matter how hard you try, this episode might just reframe everything. Sometimes the answer isn't more effort — it's a better situation. To purchase Angela's new book, please visit https://www.angeladuckworth.com/situated Want to get organized? Want interior design tips that actually reflect your personal style — not just another Pinterest trend? In this episode, I talk home decor, storytelling through design, and chasing big dreams with Olivia Westbrooks, interior designer and star of Hallmark's Home Is Where the Heart Is. Olivia has been designing for over 22 years, and after her show gave her a taste of what's possible, she got real with me about what came next . . . and why she finally pulled her podcast equipment out of the box after three years of letting it collect dust (be honest, is yours still in the box too?). We get into: ✨ Why the best-designed homes tell a story instead of following a trend ✨ How to figure out your personal style when you don't even know where to start ✨ Why doing something badly on purpose might be the fastest way through perfectionism ✨ Small, low-cost ways to make your space feel more like you today — no renovation required ✨ The moment Olivia posted her most "imperfect" video ever... and it became her best-performing post If you've ever shoved a dream to the bottom of your list because life got busy, or you're stuck buying stuff that never quite feels you, this conversation is your permission slip to take one small, brave step today. • The Secret Minimalists Won't Tell You (because it's not minimalism!) | Clutterbug Episode #340 24.08.2026 1ч 1мин
Struggling to declutter your home without it feeling cold, empty, or boring? In this episode, I sit down with Myquillyn Smith — author, home decor expert, and the mind behind The Nester — to talk all about house hushing, decluttering, and creating a soulful, cozy home you actually love. Myquillyn coined the term "house hushing," and in her brand new book (out August 25th!), she breaks it down into genius methods for quieting the visual noise in your home without sacrificing the beauty, coziness, and meaningful layers that make a house feel like you. We dig into backwards decluttering, quiet decorating, why every home has its own personality and soul, and how to actually stop stuff-shuffling into doom boxes forever (I'm looking at myself here). We also get into: ✨ Why "less stuff" doesn't have to mean "boring beige minimalism" ✨ How to find your home's holding zone without creating a new mess ✨ The difference between decorating and soulful styling ✨ Why a cabinet of curiosities might be the answer to displaying your sentimental stuff ✨ How your organizing style (Ladybug, Cricket, Bee, or Butterfly!) affects how you should hush your space If you've ever felt like your home needs to be either "minimalist" or "full of meaningful stuff" — but never both — this episode (and Myquillyn's book, House Hushing) is going to change how you think about your space completely. • 20 Million People Have Taken My Organizing Quiz, and This is the Truth About Your Messy Home | Clutterbug Episode #339 17.08.2026 46мин
Hey Clutterbugs! Still confused about your organizing style? Over 20 million people have taken my Clutterbug quiz, but if you're still struggling with clutter, piles, and mess, let's diagnose you differently. Instead of asking what organizing systems work for you, I'm going to show you how to identify your style by looking at your mess. In this episode, I break down the 4 types of messy: the Dropper, the Shover, the Spreader, and the Piler. I'll teach you how to diagnose yourself in 30 seconds by looking at your kitchen counter, bathroom, and entryway. Those high-traffic spaces reveal your natural tendencies, not your fantasy self. I also share specific organizing advice for each Clutterbug style, answer listener questions about visual vs. hidden storage, and of course, give you a challenge to tackle while you listen. By the end of this episode, you'll know exactly what your organizing style is and have made real progress in your home. Let's get organized! • Inside the Messy Middle: Why Progress Doesn't Look Like Progress | Clutterbug Episode #338 10.08.2026 45мин
Hey Clutterbugs! If you've been decluttering for weeks and your house STILL looks like a mess, let me be the first to tell you you're doing everything right. If you're putting in the work without seeing results, you're not failing. You're in the Valley of Disappointment, and it's exactly where you're supposed to be. After 17 years as a professional organizer, I've learned that progress isn't linear. You can work for days, weeks, even months without seeing visible change—and then suddenly, like magic, everything clicks. But most people quit right before they reach that breakthrough moment. In this episode, I'm breaking down the Valley of Disappointment (a concept from Atomic Habits by James Clear) and showing you what it looks like for each organizing style. Because understanding WHERE you are in the process is the difference between giving up and pushing through to that transformational moment. The Valley of Disappointment is temporary. Your breakthrough is right around the corner. Don't quit now—you're closer than you think. Go work on a space that feels stalled while you listen. Make it 1% better. That's all you need to do today. • THE 5 REAL Reasons You're Drowning in Clutter | Clutterbug Episode #337 03.08.2026 52мин
If you've been decluttering for years and you're STILL drowning in clutter, you're not lazy—you're lying to yourself. After 17 years as a professional organizer, I've learned that your messy house isn't the problem. It's just a symptom of something deeper you haven't identified yet. In this episode, I'm revealing the 5 REAL reasons people can't let go of their stuff—and spoiler alert: it has nothing to do with not having enough time, space, or help. Those are just excuses covering up the truth. Until you can name your root cause, you'll keep decluttering the same stuff over and over again. We're not weeding the garden anymore—we're ripping out the roots. Plus, a rant about ticks and Lyme disease, because I found one in my scalp mid-recording and now I'm convinced I'm dying. This episode goes DEEP. I want you to do something mindless while you listen—vacuum, dust, fold laundry—because I need you to actually HEAR this message. Stop making excuses. Let's figure out what's really going on so you can finally move forward. Want to get organized? We need energy, urgency, and hype to get through boring tasks. Doing mundane things can feel IMPOSSIBLE. Our brain sees it and we have a big fat nope and we scroll TikTok instead. The reality is we are not built to do slow, boring, mundane things day in and day out. We're hunters, not farmers. So all of these tasks can feel like absolute torture. But here's the truth: We're not lazy. We're just under-stimulated. We gotta find the hacks. We need dopamine. We need to change our day from drudgery into tiny little punches of happiness and serotonin and reward so that we actually WANT to do these things. We feel excited and we keep going. • After 20 Years, I Turned My Biggest Decluttering Regret Into a 1-Weekend Solution—The Fastest Method | Clutterbug Episode #335 20.07.2026
Hey Clutterbugs! Struggling to declutter your home? The co-founder of a $300M clutter removal company who's cleared out 100,000+ homes reveals the #1 mistake people make, and it’s one I made 20 years ago. If you've been decluttering slowly for months (or years) and still feel stuck, this episode will change everything. After helping hundreds of thousands of families let go of their clutter over the past 20 years, Nick Friedman (co-founder of College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving) has seen it all, from overflowing garages to full-blown hoarding situations. He was the very first entrepreneur ever featured on Shark Tank, appeared on Undercover Boss, and built a national brand from a borrowed cargo van in college. But more importantly? He's witnessed the exact moment people finally decide to let go . . . and what happens when they do. I spent an entire year of my life decluttering my own home, and I still wish I’d called a dumpster and changed my life on day one. Nick backs this up with insights from the field, explaining why the "rip off the band-aid” approach can work better for some people than slow, painful purging. • Inside The Most Important Psychology Lesson I’ve Ever Learned About Clutter | Clutterbug Episode #334 13.07.2026 1ч 9мин
Hey Clutterbugs! Struggling with clutter and feeling stuck? Your messy home might not be about laziness—it could be an emotional wound that needs healing. In this episode, I sit down with psychologist Dr. Guy Winch to explore how failure, rejection, guilt, and loss create invisible barriers that make decluttering feel impossible. Dr. Guy Winch, bestselling author of Emotional First Aid and one of the most-watched TED speakers of all time, joins me to discuss why we treat physical cuts and scrapes immediately but ignore our emotional wounds until they become infected, festering problems. We dive deep into the psychology behind why some people feel paralyzed by clutter, why getting rid of a chipped mug can trigger overwhelming guilt, and how past failures convince us we'll never be organized. This episode is perfect for anyone who feels like they've been fighting clutter their whole life, who beats themselves up for being wasteful, or who can't seem to take action because past failures have left them feeling helpless. It's time to stop ignoring your emotional wounds and start practicing emotional hygiene. Just like brushing your teeth, but for your mental health! • After 45 Years: What Nobody Tells You About Adult Friendships (Stop Doing This) | Clutterbug Episode #333 12.07.2026 46мин
Hey Clutterbugs! Making friends as an adult is hard, especially when you have ADHD, struggle with loneliness, or feel like you have people in your life but still feel alone. In this episode, I'm breaking down the 5 types of friendships you actually need for your mental health: the Cheerleader, the Challenger, the Collaborator, the Comfort Friend, and the Connector. I'm getting really vulnerable today about how badly I suck at making and maintaining friendships, why ADHD makes it even harder (object permanence, rejection sensitivity, social battery—all of it), and how growing up in an emotionally unavailable home taught me to ghost people who actually like me. If you've ever felt like friendships are exhausting work, or you're not sure what type of friend you're missing, this episode is for you. And just like your closet, your relationships need an audit. Which of the 5 types are you missing? Which one are you for the people you love? And how do you actually make new friends as a grown-up without it feeling awkward and terrible? 💬 Tell me in the comments: Which of the 5 types of friends are you missing? • Why Your Clutter is Keeping You Broke (And How to Fix It) | Clutterbug Podcast #330 15.06.2026 42мин
MasterClass always has great offers for an annual subscription. If you use my link, you’ll get at least 15% off! Head over https://masterclass.yt.link/cFxOSGk for the current offer! Want to know how to save money by decluttering your home? The connection between clutter and finances is real, and your messy house is draining your bank account. Today, I'm breaking down why overspending and clutter go hand-in-hand, plus giving you four challenges to stop the cycle right now. Okay, real talk. When I finally got my clutter under control, I’m not being dramatic here, the financial shift was insane. And for the longest time, I didn't understand why decluttering my home also fixed my money problems. But now I get it, and I'm sharing all of it with you. This episode is different, friends. We're not just tidying up—we're tackling the uncomfortable stuff. The scarcity mindset that makes you panic-buy things "just in case." The emotional spending that leads to more clutter, which leads to more shame, which leads you right back to the store. And yeah, I'm gonna say the thing that might make you uncomfortable: if you have too much clutter in your home, you have an overconsumption problem. You're buying too much. Sorry, not sorry. Here's what we're covering: Why my messy house was keeping me broke (and how yours might be too) The "spending to save" trap that retailers use to exploit your fear How disorganization costs you money in duplicates, late fees, and wasted purchases Why the more clothes you have, the less you have to wear (it's bonkers but it's true) But here's the best part: we're body-doubling today, and I'm giving you FOUR challenges to do while you listen. Because here's the truth: clutter isn't just stuff. It's wasted money, wasted time, and wasted mental energy. And when you finally deal with it? You get all of that back. Let's break the wheel together, Clutterbugs. Your future self (and your bank account) will thank you. Want to get organized? • Your Clutter is Lying to You (Here’s How to Stop Listening) | Clutterbug Podcast #329 08.06.2026 54мин
Hey Clutterbugs! Today we’re talking about how to declutter when you're emotionally attached to everything. Your clutter is telling you stories, and most of them are lies. We have to learn the decluttering psychology behind why we keep things we don't use, love, or need—and how to finally let go of sentimental clutter, guilt, and shame. A few months ago, a 20-second clip of me telling a client "no stories" during a decluttering session went viral—millions of views, and the comments weren't all kind. But through my own journey and after years of decluttering for clients, I've discovered that we talk ourselves into keeping things by telling elaborate stories about why we might need them, why we should use them, or why letting go makes us a bad person. In this episode, I'm teaching you how to spot the toxic narratives your belongings are whispering to you—shame, identity, and scarcity—and how to rewrite the story so you can take your power back. You'll learn: The "story spotting" tool: red flag words that mean you're about to talk yourself into keeping something How to separate facts from stories (42 coffee mugs vs. "it would be wasteful to get rid of them") My personal story about Joe's grandmother's guilt-inducing sweaters and how I finally let them go Real examples from my recent NYC makeover with Chloe and Gretchen Rubin How your Clutterbug organizing style affects the stories you tell yourself And of course, there’s a challenge involved: find one space where clutter is telling you a toxic story. Clear it. Then ask yourself: what is this space telling me NOW? Because clutter makes us feel small and suffocated. But space? Space makes us feel endlessly big. Hey Clutterbugs! Are you struggling with ruminating thoughts, mental clutter, and the constant stress of an overactive brain? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Guy Winch, psychologist and author of Mind Over Grind, to tackle the mental overload that keeps us from relaxing, sleeping, and enjoying life. Plus, I share my own struggles with stress, sleep deprivation, and the constant feeling of being behind, and how I’m learning to give myself permission to pause, even if I had a really tough time figuring out how to do that last week as I last minute panicked (you’ll hear all about it). If you’re ready to declutter your mind, stop overthinking, and finally find some peace, this episode is for you. Hit play, grab a trash bag, and tackle a small task while you listen.
