Something Is OFF With The Ocarina of Time Remake | Nintendo Direct Reactions 16.09.2026 51минNintendo just gave us our best look yet at the Ocarina of Time remake, and while nearly everything about it appears remarkably faithful to the original, its new visual direction left us with a lot to talk about! In this episode, Casen goes into the latest Nintendo Directs completely blind as we react to the Ocarina of Time remake, debate Link's redesigned appearance and the game's new art style, and ask how much a remake should preserve the original's visual identity. Then we jump into the rest of Nintendo's announcements, including Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade Chronicles, Resident Evil, Metroid, Persona, Romancing SaGa, and several surprises we weren't expecting. What did you think of the new look for Ocarina of Time? Is this exactly what you wanted from a remake, or has something been lost in translation? FFVII Revelation Is Holding Back Its Wildest Moments | Gamescom 2026 Discussion 09.09.2026 1ч 22минGamescom 2026 brought a lot of news for upcoming RPGs. In today's episode, we break down the latest Final Fantasy VII Revelation trailer, including the expanded Weapon encounters, Vincent's new backstory, the Fits system, and the enormous challenge Square Enix faces in marketing the final chapter without spoiling some of the biggest moments in the original Final Fantasy VII. We also dig into Persona 4 Revival and the controversy surrounding Atlus' approach to remakes, including whether "quality of life" improvements can fundamentally alter the design and spirit of the original games. Then there's Terranigma. After more than 30 years, one of the greatest—and most inaccessible—SNES RPGs is finally being rereleased worldwide. We go through what we currently know about the new release, its vanilla and enhanced modes, the involvement of original staff, and the strange controversy surrounding the music used in its reveal trailer. Plus: The Witcher 3 is somehow getting another major overhaul AND a new expansion; former Witcher developers are building their own RPG; and China's AAA game industry keeps producing graphically astounding-looking games. Is Resident Evil Really The Perfect Remake? | The Remake Trials (Ep.2) 02.09.2026 2ч 13минThe 2002 remake of Resident Evil is often considered one of the greatest (and most faithful) video game remakes ever made. But is it really as faithful as its reputation suggests? In this episode of The Remake Trials, we compare Resident Evil (1996) with Resident Evil (2002), explore the strange development history behind both games, examine how the remake transforms the original’s horror, discuss tank controls, Crimson Heads, Lisa Trevor, B-movie filmmaking, authorial intent, and the changing identity of Resident Evil. And at the end, we place REmake on our Remake Fidelity Matrix. Is Resident Evil Remake still the gold standard for faithful remakes? Maybe, but it’s more complicated than we thought. The Music of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (ft. Alex Moukala) 26.08.2026 3чFinal Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn had the impossible task of rebuilding a failed MMO, and its music had to help redefine what Final Fantasy XIV could be. In this episode of The Music of Final Fantasy, we're joined by composer and musician @AlexMoukalaMusic to break down Masayoshi Soken's soundtrack for A Realm Reborn, how his background in sound design shaped his approach to composition, and what makes FFXIV's music different from the work of Nobuo Uematsu. We discuss Soken's philosophy of prioritizing the player experience in writing, the surprising techniques behind some of the soundtrack's massive sounds, why certain vocals and instruments are deliberately filtered for long MMO encounters, and the countless ways A Realm Reborn weaves the musical history of Final Fantasy into something new. We also talk about Uematsu's continuing influence on the series, the collaborative nature of FFXIV's enormous soundtrack, the importance of Yoshida's direction, and why Casen walked away convinced this may be one of the greatest video game soundtracks of the last 20 years. And according to Alex… the best is still yet to come. Thanks again to Alex Moukala for joining us! Check out his channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEKRfoZ5t1VBdWfn9k6UgXw Time Codes: 1. Xenogears' Ending Is Deeper Than We Thought (ft. Keith Comito) 20.08.2026 2ч 14минIn this episode, we're joined once again by Keith Comito to revisit the final scene of Xenogears! We examine what the confrontation between Fei and Krelian is really saying about human suffering, love, free will, and our desire to truly understand one another. We also explore the Gnostic philosophy underlying Xenogears, the Wave Existence, the Path of Sephirot, the symbolism of Ouroboros, and the game's recurring image of the one-winged angels. More importantly, we ask whether Xenogears ultimately rejects the very Gnostic worldview it spends the entire game constructing. Is Krelian right that human beings can never truly understand one another? Is perfect unity preferable to the pain and uncertainty of individual existence? Or is our imperfection and continued attempts to understand and love one another the very thing that makes human life meaningful? Perhaps Xenogears' answer isn't that humanity will someday achieve perfect understanding, but that we keep trying, and that's where meaning is found. -

Why We Keep Remaking The Odyssey After 3,000 Years | State of the Arc Podcast 06.08.2026 3ч 42минNearly 3,000 years after Homer’s epic was first told, The Odyssey remains one of the most influential and frequently retold stories ever created. Christopher Nolan’s new film has brought Odysseus back to the center of popular culture, but no single adaptation can explain why this story has survived for millennia. In this episode, Mike and Casen explore the origins, structure, translations, and evolving legacy of The Odyssey. We examine how generations of writers and filmmakers have reinterpreted Homer; what different adaptations preserve, change, or misunderstand; and why Odysseus remains such a fascinating and difficult hero: clever, resilient, selfish, brutal, and relentlessly determined to return home. From Homer, Chapman, Alexander Pope, and Emily Wilson to the 1997 miniseries, The Return, and Christopher Nolan’s adaptation, this is a conversation about the strange power of a story that has outlived civilizations, and why it will continue to be told for another 3,000 years. The Bizarre Final Fantasy Sequel No One Remembers | State of the Arc Podcast 23.07.2026 1ч 13минFinal Fantasy V got a sequel, but it's not the kind you'd expect. Released as a four-part anime OVA in 1994, Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals takes place 200 years after the SNES game and follows a new cast of heroes trying to protect the elemental crystals. Despite its connection to Final Fantasy V, this OVA looks, sounds, and often feels detached from the game that inspired it. In this episode, we explore the anime’s unusual production history, Hironobu Sakaguchi’s limited involvement, director Rintaro’s radically different artistic approach, the bizarre English localization, and whether this forgotten sequel captures any of the spirit of Final Fantasy at all. Have you seen Legend of the Crystals? And does it deserve to be remembered—or was it forgotten for a reason? Does The Star Fox Remake Pass The Test? | The Remake Trials 08.07.2026 2ч 54минWelcome to The Remake Trials, a new series where we put classic games and their remakes on trial—not simply to ask whether the remake is “good” or “bad,” but to ask whether it understands the spirit of the original. For our first case, we’re looking at Star Fox: the original SNES game, Star Fox 64, Star Fox 64 3D, and the new remake. Using our Remake Fidelity Matrix, we break down the difference between surface-level faithfulness (the “letter of the law”) and deeper spiritual faithfulness: the emotional effect, dramatic function, visual identity, soundscape, pacing, and energy that made the original work resonate in the first place. What makes Star Fox feel like Star Fox? Is it the Star Wars influence? The puppet aesthetic? The arcade-like simplicity? The layered difficulty? The unforgettable voice performances? The way dialogue, music, and sound effects lock together as one percussive soundtrack? And when a remake changes the voices, characterizations, cutscenes, tone, and presentation, is it betraying the original—or translating it for a new generation? In this episode, we put Star Fox through The Remake Trials. #StarFox #Nintendo #Remake #StarFox64 #ResonantArc Time Codes: 01. Intro (0:00) 02. How Do We Judge Remakes? The REAL Reason Sakaguchi Left Square | State of the Arc Podcast 24.06.2026 1ч 46минWhy did Hironobu Sakaguchi leave Squaresoft in 2001? People have long held the answer to be the movie Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. However, that makes no sense. Think about it. Sakaguchi was their best game producer. Why demote him for a movie that flopped? Why not just put him back in charge of games which he is obviously VERY good at and is the company's central product? We tackle these questions and tell the real reason why Sakaguchi left Squaresoft after being removed from his top position over gaming content. Afterwards, we eat English candy and talk about the Hitoshi Sakimoto concert! We also dive into the development history of Chrono Trigger, the legacy of Yuji Horii and Hironobu Sakaguchi, and why some classic RPGs continue to resonate with new generations of players decades after their release. Top 10 Gateway JRPGs | State of the Arc Podcast 28.05.2026 1ч 32минWhat are the best RPGs for someone who has never played a JRPG before? Which games teach the foundations of the genre without overwhelming new players? And which games can genuinely turn a casual player into a lifelong fan? We break down why games like Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, Pokémon Yellow, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Persona 5, Golden Sun, EarthBound, Suikoden II, Super Mario RPG, and Final Fantasy IV remain some of the most approachable and emotionally resonant entry points into the genre. Along the way, we talk about: Why turn-based combat is NOT outdated, the hidden brilliance of abstraction in classic JRPG design, why Pokémon “hacks into the childhood psyche”, how JRPGs teach players complex systems intuitively, why nostalgia is actually a good thing, and the games we’d introduce to our own children. Whether you’re trying to introduce a friend, spouse, or child to JRPGs for the first time, or you’re just reflecting on the games that shaped you, this was one of our favorite conversations in a long time. #JRPG #ChronoTrigger #FinalFantasy #Pokemon #Persona5 #EarthBound #Suikoden #GoldenSun #Nintendo #RetroGaming #VideoGames #ResonantArc Time Codes: 1.
