I Won The Race—But Still Lost To Myself: The Real Competition Is You 16.09.2026 48минAfter a short break from releasing episodes while moving back to America and transitioning Couple O’ Nukes to a new hosting platform, I’m back with a solo episode centered around a recent 9/11 Heroes Run 5K and the lessons I took away from it. I share my history as a varsity cross-country runner, the injuries that forced me away from running for a period of time, and why learning the difference between pushing yourself and intentionally recovering became an important part of my approach to fitness. The race was organized in connection with the Travis Manion Foundation and its “If Not Me, Then Who...” ethos, bringing together veterans, first responders, athletes, and community members in remembrance of September 11 and fallen heroes. I signed up only days beforehand, despite recently returning from Japan, fighting a head cold, lacking sleep, and having just started rebuilding my outdoor running routine. That became the first major lesson of this episode: being given an opportunity at the last minute does not automatically mean you should turn it down. Preparation happens long before the opportunity arrives. Then came the race itself. After running another 5K as a warm-up, I lined up on the beach in extreme Florida heat, humidity, wind, sand, and approaching storm clouds. What followed became one of the most cinematic races I’ve experienced: chasing down the leader, battling another runner for position, passing the man who had held first place, and eventually crossing the finish line first overall in 21:42. But despite winning the race, I couldn’t stop thinking about another runner who was nowhere on that beach—the younger version of myself whose personal record was approximately 18:45. That realization is where this episode becomes much bigger than running. Sometimes you can beat everyone around you and still know you are capable of more. I talk about balancing gratitude with ambition, grace with accountability, and celebrating a victory without allowing that victory to become an excuse for complacency. Whether your arena is fitness, business, comedy, academics, creativity, or another part of life, the ultimate competition is often not the person beside you. It is the person you used to be—and the person you know you are still capable of becoming. Fitness Disclaimer: This episode reflects my personal training and race experience. Exercise, especially strenuous running in heat, humidity, dehydration, illness, or after injury, carries risk. Train appropriately for your own condition and consult a qualified medical professional when necessary. https://www.travismanion.org/ -
When A Man Loses His Why: Purpose, Identity, Brotherhood, And Suicide Prevention 05.09.2026 52минSend us Fan MailIn this episode, I sit down with Baruch “B” HaLevi, a counselor, men’s coach, author, former rabbi, and student of Viktor Frankl’s meaning-centered approach to life. Dr. HaLevi’s work is deeply personal: suicide has affected multiple generations of his family, including the death of his father roughly twenty years ago. Rather than allowing that history to become the end of his story, he has spent years working with men around meaning, purpose, identity, responsibility, brotherhood, and the question Viktor Frankl considered central to human survival: What is your why? We explore what happens when men build their identities around numbers—income, followers, weight, height, status, achievements, possessions, or other measurements—and eventually begin confusing those numbers with their actual worth. Dr. HaLevi connects that problem to Frankl’s experiences in the Holocaust, while I connect it to social media, dating culture, fitness culture, comparison wounds, and the way statistics can sometimes cause us to forget the individual human beings they represent. We also discuss why external success can coexist with profound internal collapse, and why a man who seemingly “has everything” can still feel as though he has nothing worth living for. Our conversation also goes deeper into masculinity, mentorship, fatherhood, faith, responsibility, and service. Dr. HaLevi argues that self-actualization alone is incomplete without self-transcendence—moving beyond ourselves in service to another person, a community, a cause, or God. We discuss biblical examples of imperfect men, the importance of taking radical responsibility rather than demanding perfection, why younger men need older mentors, and why older men have a responsibility to intentionally guide the generations coming behind them. We also examine men’s peer groups as spaces for accountability, connection, honest conversation, and rebuilding the brotherhood many men no longer have. Finally, we confront male suicide directly through Dr. HaLevi’s work with the 13 Minute Mission, his men’s peer groups, and his larger effort to break the silence surrounding male isolation and suicide. Rather than reducing the conversation to statistics, we focus on the individual lives behind them and the ripple effects each death creates. Dr. HaLevi leaves us with a powerful starting point for anyone who cannot yet identify their grand purpose: if you do not know your why, begin by identifying your why not—the person, responsibility, relationship, calling, faith, or reason that is keeping you here today. https://bhalevi.com/Website: https://coupleonukes.comDiscounted Military Creator Con Tickets: http://militarycreatorcon.com/register?afmc=MCCMWExodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? When Your Old Life No Longer Fits: Rebuilding Identity, Purpose, & Direction 03.09.2026 41минSend us Fan MailIn this episode, I sit down with Garret Biss to talk about one of the most destabilizing experiences we can face: reaching the end of a major chapter and realizing we no longer know exactly who we are, what we want, or where we are going next. Mr. Biss experienced that firsthand after nearly 17 years in the Marine Corps. What looked from the outside like freedom and opportunity instead brought anxiety, depression, loss of identity, diminished purpose, and questions about what made life meaningful once the structure he had known for years disappeared.Although we spend significant time discussing military-to-civilian transition, this conversation is for all major transitions- leaving a career, graduating from college, ending a relationship, changing industries, becoming a parent, retiring, or abandoning a path we invested years into can all create similar disruptions. Mr. Biss and I explore why human beings need more than income and external achievement—we also need connection, belonging, positive identity, meaning, purpose, and the ability to feel that our time is being invested in something worthwhile.Mr. Biss also shares an unexpected chapter from his deployment to Afghanistan, where personal struggles and unusually large amounts of reflection led him to study happiness, fulfillment, positive psychology, philosophy, and human flourishing. That work eventually became The Spheres Approach to Happiness and Fulfillment. Years later, his own post-military struggles forced him to test many of those ideas personally. We discuss why principles for living well do not prevent hardship, but can become a compass when the storm actually arrives. We also get into workaholism, burnout, career changes, sunk-cost thinking, entrepreneurship, recovery, and the difference between being externally productive and internally healthy. Mr. Biss explains why he ultimately walked away from a real-estate path he had invested heavily in and moved toward work that made him feel more alive and useful. Ultimately, this conversation challenges us to stop measuring success only by salary, titles, credentials, or how busy we appear—and instead ask whether the life we are building actually aligns with who we are becoming.https://garretbiss.com/Website: https://coupleonukes.comDiscounted Military Creator Con Tickets: http://militarycreatorcon.com/register?afmc=MCCMWExodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? From Denial To Acceptance: Learning To Live With A Bipolar Diagnosis 01.09.2026 36минSend us Fan MailIn this episode, I sit down with Reza “Rez” Ghaemi to have an honest conversation about bipolar disorder, mental health stigma, diagnosis, acceptance, and what it can mean to build a stable life after years of resisting what is happening internally. Mr. Ghaemi shares how he was diagnosed around age 30, why the diagnosis initially created an identity crisis rather than relief, and how denial became part of a longer process of eventually accepting both the condition and the responsibility of managing it.We also break down one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding bipolar disorder: that it simply means being moody, angry, or rapidly switching emotions. Mr. Ghaemi discusses his own experiences with manic episodes, hospitalization, relapse, medication, and learning to recognize warning signs before an episode becomes more severe. I connect that process to conversations I have had throughout the show about addiction recovery, relapse, overconfidence, self-awareness, and the danger of assuming that feeling better automatically means the underlying issue has disappeared.Faith also becomes a major part of Mr. Ghaemi’s story. Born into a Muslim background, he describes how periods of intense mental-health struggle unexpectedly pushed him toward Christianity and eventually led to his baptism. We discuss self-worth, purpose, suffering, and his analogy of viewing life like a video game: the difficult experiences belong to the character, but the value of the person exists beyond the current level being played. That perspective becomes part of his larger message that a diagnosis can be one chapter of a person’s life without becoming their entire identity.Mr. Ghaemi also shares the motivation behind his book, Bipolar Is My Superpower: How Acceptance Changed My Life, his work as a podcaster and DJ, and his growing interest in eventually entering the mental-health or addiction-support field. We also touch on creativity, podcasting, dating and relationship conversations, and the importance of lived experience when helping people navigate difficult seasons. Ultimately, this episode is about replacing denial with awareness, shame with understanding, and helplessness with responsible action.https://www.rezpodcast.com/Website: https://coupleonukes.comDiscounted Military Creator Con Tickets: http://militarycreatorcon.com/register?afmc=MCCMWExodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? Celebrating Season 11 Launch & 350+ Episodes (Couple O' Nukes Podcast) 31.08.2026 19минSend us Fan MailWhen I started this podcast, the goals were drastically different. The vision was different. There was never any idea of having seasons, let alone ten of them already. There was never any idea of having episodes more than once a week, let alone every other day.Yet, here I am, with a podcast that is launching its eleventh season and is approaching four-hundred episodes.Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey, and for everything yet to come.In this episode, I just share some podcasting insights, gratitude, and briefly share about my podcasting journey.Website: https://coupleonukes.comDiscounted Military Creator Con Tickets: http://militarycreatorcon.com/register?afmc=MCCMWExodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? From Alcoholism & Organ Transplant To Building Stronger Relationships: The Monument Method 29.08.2026 54минSend us Fan MailIn this episode, I sit down with Gaylen Wilson to talk about a life that has repeatedly required him to rebuild from the ground up. Mr. Wilson takes me from growing up in rural Colorado and becoming a farmer to devastating crop failures, a career as a stockbroker, another major financial collapse, and a decade-long struggle with alcoholism. We discuss functioning alcoholism, sobriety, the importance of developing emotional tools before crisis hits, and why Mr. Wilson believes gratitude for what remained helped prevent repeated losses from turning him into a bitter man.Mr. Wilson's story eventually becomes a fight for his physical life. After initially being told he had pneumonia, he learned that he was experiencing severe congestive heart failure, with his heart functioning at an extremely dangerous level. His condition continued deteriorating for years until June 2018, when he and his wife received the call that a donor heart was available. Hours later, Mr. Wilson received a heart transplant—a second chance that he says created an intense desire to use the additional years of his life to help other people. That mission eventually led Mr. Wilson and his wife into relationship coaching and the development of what they call the Monument Method. We explore his belief that couples should picture their relationship as something they are building together, with loving actions strengthening the structure while destructive arguments, contempt, and emotional withdrawal slowly damage it. Mr. Wilson explains how he and his wife use a predetermined "sacred word" to interrupt escalating conflict, reconnect, regulate themselves, and return to difficult conversations without treating each other as enemies. We also discuss emotional safety, intimacy, erectile dysfunction, long-term marriage, conflict repair, dating culture, fight-or-flight responses within relationships, and Mr. Wilson's developing Sanctuary Bond concept. At the center of the conversation is a simple challenge: winning an argument means very little if you damage the relationship in the process.https://www.monumentmethodinstitute.com/Website: https://coupleonukes.comDiscounted Military Creator Con Tickets: http://militarycreatorcon.com/register?afmc=MCCMWExodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? From Idea To Industry: Building The Bar Book & Creating Better Social Experiences 27.08.2026 48минSend us Fan MailFor my first interview after returning to America from Japan, I sit down with Mike Waskewhich, a retired Army Sergeant Major who served nearly 24 years before entering entrepreneurship and building businesses centered around technology, community, and veteran-owned brands. Mr. Waskewhich shares why he originally joined the military to escape a small Indiana town, how a career that began in the JAG Corps eventually took him into senior leadership, and what decades of military service taught him about resilience, mentorship, integrity, and the impact leaders can have without ever realizing someone is watching. We also get into the decision to leave military service and prioritize family, along with one of the biggest questions veterans face during transition: What do I do next? Mr. Waskewhich explains how his interest in bourbon and craft beverages eventually led him to create The Bar Book, a technology platform designed to learn individual flavor preferences and recommend products based on what someone actually enjoys. We discuss the science behind flavor, the craftsmanship involved in brewing and distilling, and how entrepreneurship can take an unexpected interest and turn it into an entirely new mission. That mission expanded into CRAFT—the Coalition to Represent American Flavor and Tradition—which brings together veteran-owned companies across the adult beverage industry, including alcoholic beverages, non-alcoholic alternatives, sodas, sports drinks, and more. Mr. Waskewhich explains his push to get dedicated veteran-owned product sections into military exchanges and increase veteran-brand representation at military and veteran events. We also discuss Frontline Tastings at the Military Influencer Conference in Tampa on September 24, 2026, along with future collaborations involving Military Creator Con and other veteran-focused communities. At the heart of this conversation is something much bigger than beverages: veterans helping veterans build what comes next. Mr. Waskewhich and I talk about entrepreneurship after military service, using military-developed problem-solving skills in business, learning from mistakes, networking without treating everyone as competition, and approaching successful people as potential mentors. For veterans wondering whether they are capable of building something after uniformed service, this episode is a reminder that the leadership, adaptability, persistence, and community mindset developed in the military can become some of their greatest entrepreneurial advantages. https://supportcraft.org/event/frontline-tastings-mic2026https://thebarbook.app/Website: https://coupleonukes.comDiscounted Military Creator Con Tickets: http://militarycreatorcon.com/register?afmc=MCCMWExodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? From Trauma To Creativity: David Deane Haskell On Healing, Writing, & AI 25.08.2026 1ч 41минSend us Fan MailFor my final in-person international interview from Japan during the summer of 2026, I reconnect with author and professional marching drummer David Deane Haskell—the same guest who happened to become my first in-person international interview earlier in the summer. This time, we go deeper into the relationship between trauma recovery, addiction, creativity, writing, spirituality, and the rapidly changing world of artificial intelligence. Mr. Haskell also updates me on the second edition of Wounded Angels, his deeply personal healing memoir exploring inner-child work, codependency, family trauma, addiction recovery, and the long process of confronting wounds he spent decades avoiding.Mr. Haskell and I examine how unresolved trauma can influence relationships, identity, creativity, and even writer’s block. We discuss his journey from drug and alcohol addiction toward sobriety and emotional healing, while I connect his experiences to conversations I have had surrounding suicide prevention, addiction recovery, military mental health, emotional regulation, and the danger of simply burying painful experiences instead of addressing their roots. We also explore how writing can become both an expression of what someone has survived and a way of developing characters with greater empathy, complexity, and humanity. From there, we dive into Mr. Haskell’s fiction, including Too Much Information, The Gold Club, Dark Alignment, Emergence, The Solarian Deep, and his developing novel The Vibrants. That opens an extensive conversation about science fiction, government overreach, algorithms, technological surveillance, sentient AI, human creativity, digital privacy, AI-generated communication, mental-health technology, and who ultimately gets to determine the ethical boundaries of artificial intelligence. I challenge several of these ideas through real-world examples involving AI translation, interpersonal communication, suicide intervention, bias, censorship, and the increasingly blurry boundary between helpful technology and technology making decisions for us.We ultimately come back to a much more human question: How can we be okay? Whether we are talking about addiction recovery, childhood trauma, writing, futuristic societies, artificial intelligence, social division, or creative expression, this conversation is about what happens when people stop running from what hurts and begin creating something better from it. Mr. Haskell and I also encourage aspiring writers and creators to stop waiting for permission, embrace the strange ideas living in their heads, and recognize that human imagination remains extraordinarily difficult to replace.https://daviddeanehaskell.com/https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/healing-the-wounded-inner-child-addiction-trauma/id1657865479?i=1000777685209Website: https://coupleonukes.comDiscounted Military Creator Con Tickets: http://militarycreatorcon.com/register?afmc=MCCMWExodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? Amplifying Veteran Voices Through Podcasting (Military Creator Con Panel 2026) 22.08.2026 22минSend us Fan MailRecorded live at Military Creator Con 2026 in Arlington, Texas, this special episode features my portions of the Podcaster Panel, including the questions directed to me and my responses. The full panel was moderated by Military Creator Con Founder James Van Prooyen and also featured Mike Dell, Founder of Blubrry, and Robin Phoenix Johnson, comedian and podcaster. This release focuses specifically on my perspective and experiences, while the complete panel is available separately through Military Creator Con for future purchase.I share how I discovered podcasting while still serving on active duty in the U.S. Navy, using long drives and commutes as opportunities to learn, stay entertained, and make better use of my time. That eventually led me to create Couple O’ Nukes without really knowing what I was doing—which means I also made plenty of mistakes. I discuss why aspiring podcasters should research the business, technology, branding, and resources available to them before launching, as well as why military service members do not have to postpone their creative ambitions until after leaving the uniform.Mr. Van Prooyen also pushes the conversation into personal branding, leveraging a podcast, and determining what success actually means. I explain how Couple O’ Nukes grew beyond its original military roots into a platform supporting my work in speaking, comedy, writing, mental health advocacy, suicide prevention, and self-improvement. For me, podcasting has never simply been about download numbers. It is about building trust, authority, reputation, connection, and a body of work that can continue reaching the right person at the right time—even years after an episode was originally released.I also get into some of the less glamorous realities of podcasting: difficult guests, rejecting episodes that do not align with your standards, unrealistic expectations about making money, online criticism, fluctuating engagement, and the enormous amount of work creators often perform behind the scenes. From recording video even when you initially plan to release audio only, to editing your own early episodes, experimenting with social media clips and B-roll, cross-promoting appearances, and learning your voice before outsourcing everything, this conversation is a practical look at podcasting as both a creative craft and a long-term platform. Whether you are a veteran, military creator, aspiring podcaster, content creator, or someone trying to turn your ideas into something meaningful, this episode offers lessons I learned by building the show from the ground up.militarycreatorcon.comWebsite: https://coupleonukes.comDiscounted Military Creator Con Tickets: http://militarycreatorcon.com/register?afmc=MCCMWExodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? Student Suicides In Japan Are Rising: How AI Is About To Change Prevention & Intervention 19.08.2026 48минSend us Fan MailIn this solo episode, I examine an alarming contradiction developing in Japan: while the country's overall number of recorded suicides has been declining, suicide among children and students has reached historic levels. Japan recorded 19,188 suicide deaths in 2025, falling below 20,000 for the first time, yet 538 elementary, junior high, and high school students died by suicide—the highest number recorded since comparable statistics began in 1980. I break down the available data, including differences between age groups and genders, while emphasizing that every statistic represents a human life, a family, and a community affected by loss. I also look at why the return-to-school period deserves particular attention. Historical Japanese education data shows increased student suicide deaths during the latter half of August and around the beginning of September, with September recording the largest number of student suicides in both 2024 and 2025. Academic underachievement, entrance examinations, future career concerns, bullying, family problems, social isolation, mental health struggles, and difficulty asking for help can all intersect in complicated ways. I also examine research showing dramatically higher suicide mortality among students attending part-time and correspondence high schools and discuss whether isolation, reduced contact with teachers and peers, previous school non-attendance, and unequal access to mental-health resources may help explain some of that disparity. The central question of this episode is whether artificial intelligence can become part of the solution. Japan is now exploring AI and other digital technologies for earlier identification of suicide risk, while municipalities such as Yokosuka have already launched services such as AI-chan, a 24/7 generative-AI listening service designed to connect people with appropriate human support when necessary. I explore the potential advantages—including constant availability, lower barriers to disclosure, pattern recognition, and the ability to reach thousands of people—as well as serious concerns surrounding privacy, sensitive data involving minors, hallucinations, false positives, missed warning signs, unhealthy emotional dependence, and the possibility that institutions could eventually substitute automation for qualified human care. Ultimately, I do not believe this conversation should end with asking whether AI, schools, counselors, or governments can solve suicide. Technology may become another doorway through which someone asks for help, but human beings still have to walk through the other side of that doorway. Whether you are a parent, teacher, coach, mentor, friend, neighbor, or simply someone paying attention, suicide prevention begins with noticing changes, taking people seriously, listening, and helping connect them with appropriate support. Instead of only asking what Japan should do differently, I challenge each of us to ask a more personal question: What can I do today to better recognize and serve someone who may be struggling silently? https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20260609_10/https://www.npa.go.jp/safetylife/seianki/jisatsu/R08/R7jisatsunojoukyou.pdfhttps://www.npa.go.jp/safetylife/seianki/jisatsu/R08/zantei0807.pdfhttps://www.mext.go.jp/a_menu/shotou/seitoshidou/1414737_00033.htmhttps://www.cfa.go.jp/policies/kodomonojisatsutaisaku -
The Next Decade Body: Building Strength, Energy, And Health For Life 15.08.2026 1ч 25минSend us Fan MailNearly two years after our first conversation, I reunite with Thien Wong to talk about just how much can change when fitness becomes something deeper than appearance. Ms. Wong has transformed not only physically, but professionally and personally, leaving her previous career, expanding her coaching work, and releasing her new book, Next Decade Body. We explore the philosophy behind that title and why building a healthy body should not simply be about looking good this summer, reaching a number on the scale, or surviving another short-term fitness challenge. The better question is: what do you want your body to still be capable of doing ten, twenty, or thirty years from now? Ms. Wong shares the experience that helped reshape her own relationship with health, including becoming unexpectedly breathless while climbing stairs in her twenties and realizing that being thin did not automatically mean being healthy or physically fit. We also unpack one of my favorite concepts from Next Decade Body: the danger of small leaks. Using an expensive hidden water leak at her home as an analogy, Ms. Wong explains how declining energy, chronic exhaustion, aches, stress, and other warning signs can become normalized until something much larger forces us to pay attention. Instead of waiting for a crisis, we discuss building greater awareness of what our bodies are communicating today. We also challenge modern fitness culture and the comparison trap created by social media. I share my own history of being bullied for being extremely skinny, experiencing gym intimidation, discovering fitness through One Punch Man, struggling with numbers on the scale, and eventually shifting my motivation from aesthetics toward strength, service, discipline, faith, and physical capability. Ms. Wong discusses why another person's workout, physique, diet, or transformation cannot simply be copied onto our own life. Genetics, physiology, goals, lifestyle, stress, recovery, and even what someone is actually doing behind the scenes can all be different. We also address steroids, editing, artificial intelligence influencers, body dysmorphia, fitness shaming, and why comparing ourselves to our past progress can be far healthier than endlessly comparing ourselves to strangers online. Finally, we explore women's fitness and health, including Ms. Wong's perspective on menstruation, body weight fluctuations, stress, energy, aging, and preparing for later stages of life. She explains how her coaching now focuses on high-achieving women over 35 who may believe they simply need more discipline when their deeper challenge is depleted energy and an unsustainable lifestyle. Whether you are already in the gym every day or you have never seriously considered your long-term fitness, this conversation is an invitation to stop training only for a photograph and start building a body capable of carrying you through the life you actually want to live. https://nextdecadebody.com/Website: https://coupleonukes.comDiscounted Military Creator Con Tickets: http://militarycreatorcon.com/register?afmc=MCCMWExodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? The Reality Of Living In Japan As An American: What Tourists Don't See 13.08.2026 1ч 3минSend us Fan MailMore than a tourist destination, Japan is a place where people build careers, marriages, families, and entire lives—and in this in-person international episode, I sit down with John Daly to talk about what that reality actually looks like. Mr. Daly first came to Japan through studying abroad before eventually returning to teach English, meeting his future wife, moving between Japan and the United States, building a career in information technology, and eventually returning to Japan with his family. His path includes everything from losing a Navy ROTC opportunity shortly before college to teaching in rural Japan and later supporting major Japanese organizations through Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure.A major part of our conversation centers around international marriage and raising a multicultural family. Mr. Daly and his Japanese wife spent portions of their relationship separated between countries, forcing them to navigate long-distance marriage, language barriers, different styles of humor, and cultural misunderstandings. Now raising two young biracial children in Japan, they are working to give them both English and Japanese while also thinking ahead about identity, belonging, education, and how their children may be perceived differently in Japan because of their mixed heritage. We also discuss differences in parenting expectations and the challenge of deciding which cultural traditions and values should shape a multicultural household. We also get into the everyday realities of living in Japan that tourists rarely see. Mr. Daly talks about navigating rural Japan with paper maps, adapting to Japanese workplaces, transportation, government systems, daycare, permanent residency, driving on the opposite side of the road, and the brutal summer heat. Together, we compare the advantages and frustrations of life in Japan and the United States while discussing why moving abroad does not suddenly make every problem disappear. Japan offers extraordinary safety, convenience, food, community, and public transportation, but it also has bureaucracy, aging infrastructure, rural decline, social problems, and cultural expectations that outsiders may never see from a vacation. This conversation ultimately becomes a broader discussion about immigration, cultural integration, community, technology, family, and what happens when the romanticized version of another country collides with everyday reality. Mr. Daly does not present himself as someone with a perfectly polished message—he is a husband, father, IT professional, and longtime international resident sharing what he has actually experienced. How I Turned Rejection Into My First International Comedy Show In Japan 11.08.2026 1ч 9минSend us Fan MailIn this episode, I take you behind the scenes of how rejection, frustration, faith, and one unexpected conversation led me to create and perform my first international English-led bilingual stand-up comedy show in Yokosuka, Japan:That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Cowboy In Japan And Had To Perform Comedy To Save The World. What started as me trying to find a few minutes of stage time eventually became something much bigger: my own hour-long comedy show in a foreign country, organized with less than three weeks to prepare. I talk about navigating the Japanese comedy environment, attempting to build an audience with a limited local network, and reaching the point where we had sold zero tickets only about a week before the show.Instead of giving up, I kept promoting, networking, and working alongside the owner of MagYoko to make the event happen. Somehow, that nearly empty ticket list turned into a packed venue filled with people from Japan, America, and beyond, including people who traveled hours to attend. More importantly, the entire experience forced me to reconsider how I respond when opportunities disappear. I had been frustrated with God about doors that were not opening, only to realize that if one of those smaller opportunities had worked out, I probably never would have created something of my own.I also reflect on performing stand-up comedy internationally for the first time, adapting comedy for an audience that included English-language learners, dealing with my own perfectionism after the performance, and learning to appreciate what I accomplished without pretending everything went perfectly. Sometimes the opportunity we are asking for looks completely different from the opportunity God eventually puts in front of us, and this experience became another reminder for me to choose questions over accusations when I do not understand what He is doing. After the behind-the-scenes story, you will hear the full audio from my comedy performance in Japan, including jokes about being an American cowboy in Japan, culture shock, learning Japanese through anime, PASMO machines exposing foreigners, Japanese dating misunderstandings, Godzilla versus Sanrio, American food in Japan, maid cafés, friendship, and plenty of absurd experiences from my time overseas. Because so much of stand-up comedy depends on expressions, movement, and physical delivery, I highly recommend watching the full video, Stand-Up Comedy in Japan: Culture Shock, Dating & Chaos | Full Special, on the Couple O' Nukes YouTube channel through the link in the description.https://youtu.be/y81YZ7fS2yI?si=p8FcBFc-W5JpxjaKcoupleonukes.com/comedy/Website: https://coupleonukes.comDiscounted Military Creator Con Tickets: http://militarycreatorcon.com/register?afmc=MCCMWExodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? Diagnosed With AuDHD Late In Life: Trauma, Masking, & Finally Understanding Yourself 07.08.2026 44минSend us Fan MailIn this episode, I sit down with Ellie “AuDHD” Capstick for a conversation about autism, ADHD, childhood trauma, masking, identity, parenting, and what happens when someone finally receives answers after spending decades wondering why they feel different. Ms. Capstick was diagnosed with neurodivergence in her late 30s after recognizing similarities between herself and her neurodivergent children. The diagnosis brought both relief and grief as she began looking back at a lifetime of criticism, misunderstanding, and attempts to fit into environments that were never designed around the way her brain worked. We explore AuDHD—the combination of autism and ADHD—and Ms. Capstick describes the internal conflict between ADHD’s desire for novelty and impulsivity and autism’s need for predictability and routine. We also discuss masking, why some neurodivergent people become skilled at mirroring those around them, and how this can complicate diagnosis later in life. I raise concerns about the social-media trivialization of conditions such as ADHD, while Ms. Capstick explains why the reality can involve substantially more than being distracted, forgetful, or quirky. Ms. Capstick also opens up about experiencing childhood sexual abuse and the difficulty of separating symptoms associated with trauma from those associated with neurodivergence. We discuss vulnerability, self-worth, people-pleasing, unhealthy relationships, young motherhood, and how an undiagnosed condition can influence far more than education or employment. Looking back at raising her older children before understanding herself, Ms. Capstick shares what she wishes she had known and how that knowledge has changed the way she now approaches parenting. Most importantly, we focus on what comes after understanding yourself. Ms. Capstick explains how identifying a neurodivergent person’s strengths and hyperfocuses can help create a life that works with their brain instead of constantly forcing them into a conventional mold. Her own hyperfocus on neurodivergence eventually developed into a rapidly growing online community, coaching and mentorship work, and her podcast. Whether someone is professionally diagnosed, exploring the possibility of neurodivergence, parenting a neurodivergent child, or simply trying to better understand someone they love, this conversation is about replacing shame and confusion with education, appropriate tools, self-awareness, and purpose. https://linktr.ee/EllieaudhdWebsite: https://coupleonukes.comDiscounted Military Creator Con Tickets: http://militarycreatorcon.com/register?afmc=MCCMWExodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? The Political Hydra: Former Congressional Candidate On America's Seemingly Unfixable Problems 04.08.2026 1ч 13минSend us Fan MailIn this episode, I sit down with 20-year U.S. Army veteran, former congressional candidate, actor, writer, and speaker Matthew Hasty for an extensive conversation about military service, American politics, political polarization, faith, and whether our current system can still produce meaningful reform. Mr. Hasty reflects on growing up in the Deep South, joining the Army at 19, serving approximately 14 out of 20 years overseas, becoming a warrant officer, and eventually running for Congress in Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District.Mr. Hasty and I examine both the opportunities and frustrations of military life. We discuss toxic bureaucracy, constant relocation, family instability, poor retention, military leadership, and why many talented service members decide they can accomplish more after leaving the uniform. At the same time, we acknowledge how military service exposed us to different races, cultures, religions, and countries—challenging prejudices, expanding our global perspective, and helping us better appreciate the freedoms and opportunities available in America. The conversation then moves into Mr. Hasty’s congressional campaign and what it taught him about campaign financing, voter apathy, party influence, political gatekeeping, and the enormous difficulty independent or underfunded candidates face when competing for public attention. I ask him to explain what went wrong, what he would do differently, and whether America’s political problems can realistically be repaired. Together, we discuss political division, free speech, identity-based conflict, the decline of professionalism, media framing, and the growing inability of Americans to disagree without treating one another as enemies. We also explore Mr. Hasty’s transition into acting, screenwriting, community theater, and other forms of creative expression. We discuss how art can unite people across political and cultural divisions, why adults should pursue creativity even when they are not experts, and why isolation and rumination can worsen mental-health struggles. Ultimately, this episode calls listeners to seek broader perspectives, engage respectfully with people who disagree, serve their communities, develop their faith, and refuse to surrender their responsibility for America’s future.https://linktr.ee/matt.hastyWebsite: https://coupleonukes.comDiscounted Military Creator Con Tickets: http://militarycreatorcon.com/register?afmc=MCCMWExodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? Navigating Law & Legal Powers For Taking Care Of Your Addicted Loved Ones 01.08.2026 54минSend us Fan MailIn this episode, I sit down with behavioral health attorney Mark Astor to discuss addiction, mental illness, family intervention, and the legal options available when someone can no longer make safe decisions for themselves. Mr. Astor has practiced law for more than three decades and founded a firm dedicated to helping families whose loved ones are struggling with substance use disorders, severe mental-health conditions, repeated treatment failures, medication noncompliance, arrests, overdoses, and other escalating crises. Mr. Astor explains how civil legal proceedings can sometimes give families the authority to make treatment decisions for an adult loved one whose judgment has been severely impaired. We discuss court-ordered treatment, guardianship, emergency evaluations, competency, diversionary courts, the Baker Act, and Florida’s Marchman Act. I also press him on the difficult ethical questions surrounding personal freedom, involuntary treatment, accountability, and when intervention becomes necessary to preserve someone’s opportunity to recover. We also examine the relationship between behavioral health and the criminal justice system. Mr. Astor shares how his early work as a prosecutor exposed him to repeat offenders whose underlying addiction or mental illness was rarely addressed effectively. Together, we explore when treatment may be more appropriate than punishment, why recovery usually requires a long-term continuum of care, and how families can distinguish between a temporary problem and a dangerous pattern requiring professional intervention. Beyond the legal discussion, Mr. Astor shares his entrepreneurial journey of rebuilding his career after burnout, divorce, financial hardship, repeated failure on the California Bar Exam, and the loss of his father. His story demonstrates how failure can redirect a person toward meaningful work. The central message of this conversation is that families should not wait for overdose, incarceration, violence, or death before asking for help. Recovery is not an instant destination, but informed intervention may create the time, structure, and accountability necessary for someone to begin that journey. https://mentalhealthaddictionlawfirm.com/Website: https://coupleonukes.comDiscounted Military Creator Con Tickets: http://militarycreatorcon.com/register?afmc=MCCMWExodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? Raising A Multicultural Family In Japan: Navigating Fatherhood, Marriage, Culture, & Identity 30.07.2026 1ч 16минSend us Fan MailIn this in-person international episode recorded in Japan, I sit down with U.S. Air Force veteran and cybersecurity manager Matthew Yard for a wide-ranging conversation about military service, international marriage, multicultural parenting, leadership, communication, health, and gratitude. Mr. Yard shares how losing his mother to cancer during high school influenced his desire to find camaraderie, purpose, and a community larger than himself—eventually leading him into the United States Air Force. Mr. Yard walks me through his military journey from technical training in Biloxi, Mississippi, to assignments in Turkey, Japan, Korea, Germany, and Afghanistan. We discuss the mentors who helped him develop as a young service member, the importance of healthy military leadership, and why many young troops need more than an assigned supervisor—they need someone genuinely invested in their growth. He also reflects on serving at Bagram Airfield, experiencing indirect fire, witnessing the dangers faced by other service members, and recognizing how precious his family and his own life truly were. We also explore Mr. Yard’s experience as an American husband married to a Japanese woman and the father of three biracial daughters. He explains how cultural differences, language barriers, and emotionally charged conversations created misunderstandings early in his marriage. Together, we discuss bilingual parenting, raising children across multiple countries, helping children develop their own cultural identity, and the importance of intentionally creating individual father-daughter time before children grow up and leave home. The conversation also examines public speaking and professional development through Toastmasters. After missing a career opportunity, Mr. Yard recognized that technical knowledge alone was not enough; he also needed to communicate his ideas clearly and confidently. I share my own experiences as a speaker and emphasize that effective communication affects far more than promotions—it strengthens leadership, marriages, parenting, conflict resolution, and personal boundaries. Finally, Mr. Yard shares the medical crisis that abruptly ended his Air Force career. After military medical personnel initially failed to identify blood clots in his lungs, his wife continued advocating for additional testing until the condition was discovered. Although the diagnosis resulted in his medical separation, it opened the door to a federal civilian career. His central lesson is one everyone can apply: never take your health, family, opportunities, or present circumstances for granted, because life can change without warning. Preacher To Breacher: Former Pastor & FBI Agent On Society, Faith, Empathy, & Grace 26.07.2026 59минSend us Fan MailIn this episode, I sit down with former FBI Special Agent and Baptist pastor Eric Robinson for a conversation about faith, law enforcement, criminal investigations, and the difficult realities hidden beneath everyday society. After beginning his career in ministry, Eric entered the FBI and served for 24 years, investigating drug cartels, gangs, public corruption, organized crime, crimes against children, financial crimes, counterterrorism, and human intelligence. He also spent 15 years as a SWAT operator and approximately a decade as a tactical and firearms instructor. Mr. Robinson explains how the emotional burden of pastoral ministry contributed to years of debilitating headaches—and why transitioning into the FBI surprisingly gave him healthier professional boundaries. I ask him about ministry burnout, the pressure pastors experience to appear perfect, the importance of having a trustworthy community, and whether witnessing violence, exploitation, and human suffering challenged or strengthened his Christian faith. We also discuss how his work broadened his understanding of grace, accountability, and the complicated circumstances that can lead people into gangs, drug trafficking, prostitution, and other criminal environments. Our conversation moves into some of the darkest cases Mr. Robinson encountered, including drug-cartel investigations, gang violence, crimes against children, and the commercial sexual exploitation of teenage girls. Rather than reducing victims or offenders to simple labels, we examine the childhood trauma, abuse, poverty, manipulation, desperation, and lack of responsible adults that often exist behind these situations. I also share my experiences working with organizations that support women escaping sexual exploitation and emphasize the importance of prevention, mentorship, mental-health resources, faith-based outreach, and survivor-informed care. We close by discussing Mr. Robinson’s forthcoming book, his unusual journey from “preacher to breacher,” and the remarkable people and cases he encountered throughout his FBI career. Most importantly, we address how listeners can maintain hope without becoming overwhelmed by every tragedy in the world. We may not be able to solve every global crisis alone, but we can protect our families, support credible organizations, serve our communities, and steadily expand our sphere of positive influence. https://preachertobreacher.com/Website: https://coupleonukes.comDiscounted Military Creator Con Tickets: http://militarycreatorcon.com/register?afmc=MCCMWExodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? Two Travelers In Japan Unexpectedly Sit Down To Talk Culture, Marriage, Purpose, & Faith 24.07.2026 1ч 17минSend us Fan MailIn my second international in-person interview recorded in Japan, I sit down with Luis, whom I met at Hillsong Tokyo at their grand opening. What began as two strangers sitting next to each other at church quickly turned into a meaningful conversation about faith, identity, marriage, culture, and the lifelong process of personal growth. Together, we explore how God often brings people together in unexpected places and how international travel can broaden not only our worldview but also our understanding of ourselves. Luis shares his journey from growing up in the Dominican Republic to building a life in the United States, raising four sons, and eventually finding himself traveling through Japan. He opens up about marrying at a young age, navigating cultural differences within marriage, experiencing divorce, pursuing reconciliation, and the lessons counseling taught him about codependency, emotional health, communication, and aligning values before entering a lifelong commitment. His story highlights how unresolved personal struggles can quietly influence relationships and why genuine healing begins with honest self-examination rather than simply changing circumstances.Throughout the conversation, I contribute my own experiences growing up in a controlling household, traveling internationally, and witnessing the incredible diversity of cultures around the world. Together we discuss why so many people unknowingly build their identity around careers, relationships, or other people's expectations instead of discovering who they truly are. We also examine loneliness, mental health, addiction, suicide prevention, emotional maturity, empathy, and the importance of finding purpose that extends beyond temporary success or external validation.Additionally, Luis shares about the importance of getting involved in local and even federal politics to make voices heard and to help push for change or defend systems, laws, and beliefs that are under attack.Website: https://coupleonukes.comDiscounted Military Creator Con Tickets: http://militarycreatorcon.com/register?afmc=MCCMWExodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? Bipolar Is Who I Am: Chris LaFreniere On Mental Illness, Addiction, & Faith 22.07.2026 31минSend us Fan MailIn this episode, I sit down with Chris LaFreniere, author of Bipolar Is Who I Am: A Journey of Transformation, Redemption, and Managing the Chaos Within, to discuss one of the most misunderstood mental illnesses in the world. Mr. LaFreniere shares his deeply personal story of living with Bipolar I Disorder, including psychosis, paranoia, repeated psychiatric hospitalizations, addiction, and the long road toward stability. Rather than offering easy answers, he provides an honest look at what recovery actually requires and why hope is still possible even in life's darkest moments.Mr. LaFreniere walks us through his first manic episode, the terrifying delusions that led to his diagnosis, and the difficult years that followed as he repeatedly cycled through treatment before finally accepting the importance of medication, healthy routines, sobriety, and accountability. We also discuss how his Christian faith became an essential part of his recovery, the role of prayer and church community, overcoming alcohol and substance abuse, and why recovery from bipolar disorder is about lifelong management rather than pretending the illness simply disappears.Throughout our conversation, I explore the growing misconceptions surrounding mental illness in today's culture and why authentic conversations like this matter. We discuss the importance of removing stigma, encouraging people to seek professional help, balancing faith with medical treatment, and remembering that mental illness does not define a person's value or future.https://www.bipolariswhoiam.com/Website: https://coupleonukes.comDiscounted Military Creator Con Tickets: http://militarycreatorcon.com/register?afmc=MCCMWExodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes?
