But the New Testament speaks of salvation with far more breadth than that. If God has acted in CHRiSt, if the work is finished, if forgiveness, justification, and new life have truly been secured in Him, then what is the proper human response? Scripture’s answer is striking in its simplicity: believe. This episode shows that the Gospel is not only an announcement of what God has done through Jesus CHRiSt; it is also an invitation. Jesus does not call people first to religious performance, moral repair, or external adjustment. He calls them to Himself. “Come unto me,” He says. That means the response the Gospel demands is not labor, cleanup, qualification, or self-preparation.
