  In March 1987, Traverse City DJ Steve Cook sat down with a $99 keyboard and invented a monster for an April Fools' bit — a seven-foot dog-headed creature stalking Northern Michigan on a ten-year cycle. He made up the year. He made up the sightings. He'd never heard the words "Dogman" before that afternoon. Then the phones started ringing. Not with laughter — with confessions. Listeners who'd kept a story secret for years, even decades, suddenly had permission to say it out loud. Within a week, Cook's joke was the most-requested song on the station. Within years, he'd logged over 500 separate eyewitness reports. But here's the part that should bother you: Cook's fictional 1887 origin date lines up with a real, pre-existing lumberjack account from Wexford County. A 1930s encounter from a man named Robert Fortney describes the creature making direct, deliberate eye contact — decades before Cook's song existed to plant that idea. And the "years ending in seven" cycle Cook wrote as a catchy lyric has kept landing on schedule: 1987, 1997, 2007 (the year the notorious hoaxed "Gable Film" surfaced), 2017 — with 2027 next on the clock. Tonight, we trace the joke that grew teeth: how a fabrication that predates any research somehow backed into details that were already sitting in the regional memory, and what it means that the man who made it all up still, to this day, says he believes the people who called him.

  An old English church, newly uncovered medieval paintings and an apparently insignificant piece of damaged plaster lead to something far older and more sinister in Arnold Smith's remarkable antiquarian ghost story, The Face in the Fresco. First published in the London Mercury in June 1928, the story has since largely disappeared from popular memory. Yet its combination of ecclesiastical history, antiquarian investigation and steadily mounting supernatural menace places it firmly within the tradition associated with the great English ghost-story writers of the period. The Face in the Fresco is exactly the kind of neglected supernatural tale I particularly enjoy bringing back to an audience: a story once published and read, but which has subsequently slipped into the shadows.
