  Derek begins a look at the six foundational doctrines that will take you from the starting point of the Christian faith to its ultimate fulfillment in eternity. We begin this study with repentance from dead works, which Derek notes is a decision we make, not an emotion we feel. Dead works are anything we do that is not done in faith to God.

  Today we look at just what repentance means and what it looks like. Derek explains the Greek and Hebrew meanings, drawing them together into a picture that can be seen in the parable of the prodigal son. When this prodigal son, in his misery and broken state, came to himself, he was able to repent and return to his father’s house in humility.

  In today’s session Derek stresses the importance that repentance has to be made before one can fully enter into faith in Christ and be saved. There can be no forgiveness without repentance. This was the message that began in Jerusalem and continues to all nations today.

  Derek continues his message on a serious note: the fact that God hasn’t changed, and neither has the gospel message. Throughout the book of Acts repentance was stressed first; then came believing in Christ, and then baptism. When God initiates repentance in our lives, He is looking for a response from us.

  Derek finishes this week’s study by transitioning from the way of repentance to the walk of faith. He begins with a look at the nature of faith—what it is and where it originates. Faith speaks from our heart and our high priest, Jesus, adds power to it. Faith comes before seeing, but speaks out by confessing hope with determination.

  In this week’s teaching, Derek addresses the authority of the Word of God and the power behind and in it. Today he explains how the Bible was written by various fallible men who were inspired by the Holy Spirit to put down in words what He directed them to write.

  Derek looks at how Jesus dealt with Satan when he questioned what God had said. It is the same ploy used on Eve and others throughout history. Jesus quoted directly from the Word of God; and He is our example for how we should deal with spiritual warfare in our lives.

  Derek explains that the authority behind the Scripture is the Holy Spirit, who causes those truths to work in our lives bringing discernment, life, and power. The Word has the ability to separate the soulish from the spiritual, revealing the thoughts and intents of the heart of man.

  Derek finishes the teaching from this week by going through the effects God’s Word can have on your life. God’s Word produces faith, it is the seed of the new birth, and it is spiritual nourishment. It produces illumination, provides physical healing, and makes possible victory over sin and Satan. It also provides cleansing and holiness, and is a spiritual mirror.

  In this first of a series of teachings on Laying the Foundation, Derek uses the picture of constructing a building to show how important laying a solid foundation is to building the Christian life. There is only one foundation for this structure, and we must be sure our lives are built on Jesus Himself.

  Derek uses a dialogue between Jesus and Peter to give four phases we must all experience when we encounter Jesus: confrontation, revelation, acknowledgement, and public confession.   In today’s program, Derek shares two ways in which we can wisely begin to build on our foundation. But first, there are issues in our lives to be dug out of the way—such as traditions and prejudices. No matter what culture you grow up in, there are things that need to be eliminated.

  Derek continues providing three more issues that must be dealt with: preconceptions, unbelief, and rebellion. He then asks, “What is your attitude to the Bible?” Do you realize that Jesus and the Bible are both referred to as “the Word”? Your attitude toward one is your attitude toward the other.

  Derek finishes this week’s teaching by summarizing what really makes a disciple. Jesus told His disciples that if they loved Him they would keep His words and that He and His Father would come to indwell them. Love is the motivation for obedience to Jesus, His Word, and the Father. Your obedience in love is what draws them.

  Derek begins this new study by looking at who God is. Behind the entire universe there is a person, a Creator, who is also a Father. If we can embrace this, we will have a totally new perspective on ourselves, our lives, and everything that goes on around us. All things, including you, have their source and fulfillment in God.

  Today Derek explains that God is behind and in control of the whole universe. He controls the stars, human history, the nations, and our individual lives. More important still, God has a plan for each one of our lives and He is working these out just as surely as He is controlling every other area of the universe.

  Using Romans 8:29–30 as his text, Derek begins to look at the seven successive stages of God’s plan for those who love Him, who believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior, and who have become members of God’s family. The culmination of this plan is that we will share Christ’s glory and sit with Him on His throne throughout eternity.

  The first stage in this study to contemplate God’s foreknowledge. He knows everything about each of us. Derek here delves into the psalms to illustrate this by examining how we were formed. God knew every process our bodies would pass through and when each member would be formed. In like manner, He has a plan for each of us.

  In this second stage Derek stresses that because God foreknew us, He chose us for His own purposes. He knows who we are and what we can be. As we say yes, He enables us to walk in His grace to fulfill those purposes. He foreknew you and chose you because He knows what you can accomplish together.
