1868 || the emotion economy 04.10.2026 11minEmotions circulate and accumulate value across our society through repetition. We must pay attention to what these emotions DO rather than what they ARE. We assign emotional values to things because of the way we're taught in our culture. Our emotions orient us towards or away from certain bodies. It allows us to justify biases against entire groups of people because it becomes the cultural norm.Unfortunately, there are very bad people who take advantage of this cultural shaping through emotions. They weaponize hatred by co-opting language and making themselves the victims so that we can't help the TRUE victims. https://www.saranahmed.com/books-1/https://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3366/j.ctt1g09x4qhttps://pratiquesdhospitalite.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/245435211-sara-ahmed-the-cultural-politics-of-emotion.pdfhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cultural_Politics_of_EmotionSupport the BDS movement.organize clothing swaps with your friends.Get free resources from Annas Archive.Join your local DSABecome a READING PARTNERRead Julie's Medium Blog.Support JULIE (and the show!)Support + get some bonus stuff over on PATREON.Get an occasional personal email from me: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTune in on INSTAGRAM AND YOUTUBE or TIKTOK.Info on War Tax Resistance.Donate to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund and the Sudan Relief FundThe opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1867 || empathy isn't a sin 03.10.2026 9minLove should not be harsh or tough. Empathy isn't a sin. It's a crucial aspect to our humanity. If you hear that empathy is a sin, that's a way to avoid the cognitive dissonance necessary to act out of alignment with your morals. Empathy is a central feature in our humanity. You can become more objective and reasonable about your empathy, without abandoning it completely. If your conscience is screaming that something isn't right, listen. Sure, we can be blinded by our subjective relationship to empathy, but we shouldn't be demonizing empathy itself. Anything that encourages you to ignore human suffering is propaganda. https://www.splcenter.org/resources/hatewatch/hard-right-influencers/www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/09/maga-right-christianity-empathy-toxic/688755/Support the BDS movement.organize clothing swaps with your friends.Get free resources from Annas Archive.Join your local DSABecome a READING PARTNERRead Julie's Medium Blog.Support JULIE (and the show!)Support + get some bonus stuff over on PATREON.Get an occasional personal email from me: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTune in on INSTAGRAM AND YOUTUBE or TIKTOK.Info on War Tax Resistance.Donate to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund and the Sudan Relief FundThe opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 1865 || when it's all too familiar, make life strange 30.09.2026 10minWhen things become familiar, we ignore their magic. Defamiliarization is a way to reclaim that magic. It's a way to renew our perception and reclaim meaning. It is the function of art to renew our perception. What we are familiar with we cease to see. The writer shakes up the familiar scene, and as if by magic, we see a new meaning in it. - Anaïs NinDefamiliarization is a literary technique coined by Viktor Shklovsky in 1917, that makes familiar objects or experiences seem strange so readers see them in a new way. It works by disrupting “habitual” perception, so the text revitalizes ordinary details and encourages fresh understanding. It's a way to see things again, for the first time. This is why art exists. And why it's important to make room for it. 1861 || put in your 2 cents or end up 2 cents short 25.09.2026 12minWe've been conditioned to betray ourselves at every turn, so much so that many of us don't have a clue on what we actually want or who we actually are. We have been taught to self-abandon at every angle, so we can accommodate everyone and everything around us. This self-betrayal is a false security. It's not how the world improves, but it's what we've been taught is necessary for a better world. But when we're scared to put in our two cents, we often end up two cents short. 1860 || questioning yourself 24.09.2026 10minIt's not a problem that you didn't know, it becomes a problem if you're not willing to update your understanding based on evidence. Ask for clarification, evidence, and be willing to challenge your assumptions to better understand your ideas. Update your ideas based on alternative viewpoints and the evidence that applies. Don't take it personally if you were previously ignorant (that's a natural part of being a human) but be willing to open your mind to new information when presented with it. You have to be willing to challenge your own assumptions. 1857 || don't bury the discomfort 21.09.2026 11minHaving negative core beliefs doesn't just affect how we see the world, but it affects how the world sees us. We all have rules that guide our behavior and choices. We might not be able to clearly articulate all of them, but they hang around in our subconscious and nudge us towards behavior that is consistent with them. Many are great, some aren't so great but becoming more conscious helps us address which rules are helping us or harming us. 1856 || we're all hypocrites 20.09.2026 11minA lot of us are forced to make decisions daily that don’t align with our values. Many of us continue working for or otherwise supporting the evil corporation we wish to divest from, or we continue eating factory farmed meat despite wanting to lean into more plant based options, or we spend all day scrolling for companies we don’t want to have our data. I check social media despite knowing it will worsen my mood and overall health. I have stayed in relationships I knew were unhealthy because it felt easier than starting over. I’ve bought Temu clothes despite believing deeply in more ethical consumption. I drive a lot for someone who preaches about climate change caused by oil companies. I complain constantly about consumerism but I still end up buying shit I don’t need. I have had to vote for people I don’t agree with to avoid voting for other candidates I agree less with. I know sleep is important but I also routinely trade it for shit that isn’t.Change feels bigger than it is because humans tend to prefer what is familiar. This is sometimes called the status quo bias, and we do it for a variety of reasonable reasons. Maybe it is because we want to prevent a potential loss. Most humans tend to focus on what we have to lose, rather than what we have to gain and this keeps us tied to the “way things are” rather than branching out and trying something new. Maybe it’s the sunk cost fallacy. Our tendency to continue dumping our time, our money, and our efforts into the things we’ve already invested into, even if it’s not beneficial. Maybe it’s cognitive dissonance. Maybe it’s a combination of everything weighing on us to stay the same even when the same isn’t working. Everyone, including myself, has gotten too comfortable “minding their business” to the detriment of society at large. And over time, the more we act in ways that doesn’t align with what we actually want and value in the world, the more depressed we get. Our decisions aren’t just impacting the world around us, but they are impacting our spirits, our minds, our beliefs. When I feel the best about myself, it’s because I’m doing as much as I can to make my spirit feel aligned with my values. I’m eating right, not just because it’s healthier, but because I have forced myself to be more conscious of the process. 1852 || rejecting obedience 15.09.2026 10minDisobedience requires courage - not only the courage to break a rule but the courage to stand alone in doing so.Some rules are created for the protection and best interest of everyone following them. They are implemented to keep people following the same procedures and processes so that things can be done effectively, efficiently, or enjoyably. A teacher implements rules because they want to create an environment where the students can learn. The goal is to benefit the students, so the rules are in place to achieve the same goal as the person following the rules. Mutually beneficial rules to organize a classroom for the interest of learning. Of course there are teachers that do not have their students best interest at heart and they may abuse the hierarchy to create rules that are irrational. But in theory and most instances, rational authority is something that changes with the needs of the room the rules are governing.
