  • Harry Tracy: Vanishing Into the Cascades | Ep. 7 25.09.2026 27นาที
Harry Tracy had survived the Battle of Bothell & Woodland Park, and now the 1902 manhunt for the escaped outlaw spread across Seattle and western Washington. Hundreds of men were looking for him—but somehow, Tracy continued slipping through the search lines. In Episode 7 of the Harry Tracy Deep Dive, the hunt moves from Bainbridge Island and Puget Sound into West Seattle, Renton, Kent, and the countryside beyond. Tracy appears without warning, disappears just as quickly, and repeatedly forces ordinary people into the middle of a manhunt that was dominating newspaper headlines across the Pacific Northwest.Homes become temporary hideouts. Residents find themselves face-to-face with one of the most wanted men in America. John Anderson is pulled into Tracy’s escape, while encounters at the Johnson and Gerrells homes reveal a very different side of the fugitive than the gunman newspapers had been describing. All the while, sheriffs, posses, detectives, bloodhounds, militia, and armed citizens try to predict where he will surface next. But Tracy seems to understand the hunt almost as well as the men pursuing him.He moves through populated areas when authorities expect him in the wilderness, doubles back when search parties believe he has gone forward, and uses the geography surrounding Seattle to keep an extraordinary number of pursuers guessing. Reports pour in from every direction, rumors spread faster than the posses can investigate them, and separating genuine sightings from false alarms becomes increasingly difficult. Then Harry Tracy disappears. After weeks of robberies, gunfights, hostages, escapes, and one of the largest manhunts the Pacific Northwest had ever seen, authorities suddenly lose the trail of the Oregon State Penitentiary fugitive.Episode 7 follows Tracy through one of the strangest stretches of the entire manhunt—from the aftermath of the Battle of Bothell to Bainbridge Island, West Seattle, Renton, Kent, and the moment the most hunted outlaw in Washington simply seems to vanish. But Harry Tracy’s story was not over.Somewhere beyond the search lines, he was still moving—and the final chapter of the Harry Tracy manhunt was about to begin. This is Episode 7 of the complete Harry Tracy Deep Dive.#HarryTracy #HarryTracyDeepDive #SeattleManhunt #SeattleHistory #WashingtonHistory #PacificNorthwestHistory #WildWest #OldWest #OutlawHistory #WesternHistory #AmericanWest #Manhunt #TrueCrimeHistory #BainbridgeIsland #WestSeattle #Renton #KentWashington #WildWestDeepDives
  • Harry Tracy: The Battle of Bothell | Episode 6 18.09.2026 36นาที
With David Merrill gone, Harry Tracy emerged alone—and the manhunt entered an entirely new phase. On July 1st, 1902, Tracy appeared near Olympia and seized the launch N&S, forcing Captain A.J. Clark and his crew to carry him north toward Seattle. During the nearly twelve-hour journey, Tracy spoke openly about Merrill, gave his own version of what had happened between them, and continued moving toward a city that was already beginning to brace for his arrival. As reports of the escaped convict spread, the search widened. Posses moved through the countryside, Governor Henry McBride authorized militia support, and a $2,500 reward was offered for Tracy’s capture. Then, on July 3rd, a credible sighting near Bothell brought lawmen directly onto his trail. In driving rain, Tracy ambushed the pursuing posse near Wayne. Everett detective Charles Raymond was killed, Deputy John Williams and reporter Louie Sefrit were wounded, and the brief exchange of gunfire once again ended with Tracy escaping before authorities could surround him.Episode 6 follows Harry Tracy from the mystery surrounding Merrill’s disappearance into the growing Seattle-area manhunt, the seizure of the N&S, and the deadly Battle of Bothell—a confrontation that left lawmen dead and wounded while the most hunted man in the Pacific Northwest remained at large.By the end of July 3rd, Tracy had survived another encounter that should have ended his run. Instead, Seattle was shaken, the manhunt was growing larger, and the violence surrounding Harry Tracy was far from over. This is Episode 6 of our Deep Dive into the Life of Harry Tracy#HarryTracy #BattleOfBothell #SeattleManhunt #DavidMerrill #WildWest #OldWest #OutlawHistory #WesternHistory #AmericanWest #WashingtonHistory #SeattleHistory #PacificNorthwestHistory #Manhunt #TrueCrimeHistory #ForgottenHistory #WildWestDeepDives
  • Harry Tracy & David Merrill: The End of the Outlaw Partnership | Ep. 5 11.09.2026 32นาที
After escaping the Oregon State Penitentiary, Harry Tracy and David Merrill had made it across the Columbia River and into Washington—but the manhunt was only growing larger.Moving through the countryside of southwestern Washington, the two fugitives relied on stolen food, clothing, horses, and the people they encountered along the way to stay ahead of the posses closing in behind them. Reports of Tracy and Merrill spread quickly, while militia, bloodhounds, sheriffs, and armed citizens searched roads, farms, and timber for any sign of the escaped convicts. But as the pressure mounted, the partnership between Tracy and Merrill began to unravel.Newspaper reports, old suspicions, and questions of betrayal drove a wedge between the two men. Tracy would later give conflicting explanations for what happened next—describing everything from an argument to a supposed duel—but somewhere near Napavine, Washington, David Merrill was shot and killed. His body was left hidden beneath the brush, bringing an abrupt end to the partnership that had carried the two men from prison cells in Salem into one of the largest manhunts in the Pacific Northwest. With Merrill dead, Harry Tracy continued north alone.Episode 5 follows Tracy and Merrill through their flight across Washington, the growing hunt surrounding them, the collapse of their partnership, and the disputed circumstances surrounding Merrill’s death.By the time Tracy emerged from the timber without his longtime partner, the Harry Tracy manhunt was about to enter an entirely new—and far more violent—chapter. This is Episode 5 of the complete Harry Tracy Deep Dive.#HarryTracy #DavidMerrill #HarryTracyDeepDive #WildWest #OldWest #OutlawHistory #WesternHistory #AmericanWest #WashingtonHistory #PacificNorthwestHistory #ForgottenHistory #WildWestDeepDives
  • Harry Tracy: The Bloody Oregon Prison Break | Ep. 4 04.09.2026 33นาที
For nearly three years, Harry Tracy and David Merrill lived behind the walls of the Oregon State Penitentiary, where they worked in the foundry, studied the prison’s routines, and quietly prepared for the moment when they would make their escape. On the morning of June 9, 1902, the two convicts uncovered a pair of Winchester rifles hidden inside the prison and put their plan into motion. Within minutes, gunfire erupted across the grounds. Three guards were killed, another prisoner was seriously wounded, and Tracy and Merrill fought their way beyond the walls carrying rifles, ammunition, and little intention of ever being taken alive. As Salem sounded the alarm, posses spread across the surrounding countryside and the search quickly grew into one of the largest manhunts Oregon had ever seen. Yet the fugitives remained ahead of their pursuers, moving through farms and timber before forcing three men to carry them across the Columbia River and into Washington.Episode 4 follows Tracy and Merrill through their years inside the penitentiary, the mystery surrounding the weapons smuggled into the prison, the violent breakout, and the opening stages of the pursuit that would soon capture the attention of the entire Pacific Northwest. This is Episode 4 of the complete Harry Tracy Deep Dive.#HarryTracy #DavidMerrill #OregonStatePenitentiary #PrisonBreak #OregonHistory #WashingtonHistory #WildWest #OldWest #OutlawHistory #WesternHistory #TrueCrimeHistory #WildWestDeepDives

  • Harry Tracy: The Early Years (Ep. 1) 14.08.2026 40นาที
Before Harry Tracy became one of the most feared fugitives in the American West, he was Harry Severns — a young man from Wisconsin whose early life was buried under rumor, bad reporting, dime novels, and decades of confusion. In Episode 1 of this Wild West Deep Dive, we begin the true story of Harry Tracy by going back before the prison escapes, before the manhunts, and before the newspapers turned him into one of the most talked-about outlaws in America. This episode follows Tracy’s early years in Wisconsin, the uncertainty surrounding his birthplace, his family background, his connection to the logging country of the Upper Midwest, and the first signs that Harry Severns was drifting toward the outlaw identity the world would later know as Harry Tracy. But this is not just a story about where he was born.It is the beginning of a much larger story — the making of an outlaw who would eventually run from lawmen across multiple states, escape from prison, terrify communities, and force the Pacific Northwest into one of the most dramatic manhunts in Western history. In this series, we are going to separate the real Harry Tracy from the legend, the dime novel fiction, and the newspaper exaggerations that followed him. And to understand the outlaw he became, we have to start with the boy he once was. This is the early life of Harry Tracy — and the beginning of one of the most overlooked outlaw stories in American history.Thank you for watching Wild West Deep Dives. • Jack Watkins: The Forgotten Gunfighter Who Terrorized Wyoming 02.08.2026 24นาที
Jack Watkins emerged from the violent railroad towns of early Wyoming with a reputation as one of the fastest and most dangerous gunmen on the frontier. Known as “The Laramie Terror,” Watkins was remembered as a hunter, rancher, suspected horse thief and outlaw whose name became connected to the Bear River City Riot, notorious gunmen, stagecoach robbers and some of the most dangerous outlaw gangs in the West.In 1875, an attempt to arrest Watkins inside the Albany County courthouse erupted into gunfire. Two officers were wounded, Watkins escaped on horseback, and a posse raced after him across the Wyoming countryside. One long-distance shot reportedly knocked him from the saddle—but Watkins climbed back onto his horse and kept riding.Authorities never captured him again. In this episode of Wild West Deep Dives, we follow the limited but legendary record of Jack Watkins, from the Union Pacific railroad camps and his confrontations with lawman Nathaniel Boswell to his disappearance from history. Was he killed along the Deadwood stage road, imprisoned under another name, or did the feared Laramie Terror eventually settle down as a rancher in Mexico?Join the Wild West Deep Dives family for just $1 a month and gain access to exclusive bonus content, including the story of the first stagecoach robbery in United States history.Thank you all for the continued support. The killers became known as the Bloody Espinosas — Felipe Espinosa and those who rode with him — and for a time, soldiers, posses, and lawmen could not stop them. Then Fort Garland sent for Tom Tobin.Tobin was a mountain man, scout, tracker, and frontier survivor whose life had already carried him through the Santa Fe Trail, Taos, Bent’s Fort, the Taos Revolt, and the dangerous borderlands of New Mexico and Colorado. But his most famous hunt came when he was called to track down Felipe Espinosa and bring an end to one of the darkest chapters in Colorado’s territorial history. In this episode, we dive into the story of the Bloody Espinosas, the fear they created across Colorado, the failed attempts to stop them, and the forgotten tracker who finally ended their reign of terror. This is the story of Tom Tobin: the forgotten mountain man who hunted the Bloody Espinosas.#TomTobin #BloodyEspinosas #WildWestHistory #OldWest #AmericanWest #WesternHistory #ColoradoHistory #MountainMen #FrontierHistory #WildWestDeepDives #FortGarland #KitCarson #TrueWest #HistoryPodcast #OutlawHistory #AmericanHistory #WesternLegends #forgottenhistory Sources for Episode;https://www.metismuseum.ca/media/document.php/14662.Thomas%20Tate%20Tobin.pdfhttps://santafetrail.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Thomas-Tate-Tobin.pdf THIS MAN HUNTED DOWN THE FIRST KNOWN SERIAL KILLERS OUT WEST (3) By; Daniel Sanchez-Leonetti https://historynet.com/this-man-hunted-down-the-wests-first-known-serial-killers/Espinosa Murders Colorado Encyclopedia https://coloradoencyclopedia.org/article/espinosa-murders Man Hunter Tom Tobin was Kit Carson III’s ‘Other’ Celebrated Grandfather By Gregory Lalire https://historynet.com/man-hunter-tom-tobin-was-kit-carson-iiis-other-celebrated-grandfather/ Tom Tate Tobin – Exploring & Scouting in New Mexico & Colorado https://www.legendsofamerica.com/tom-tobin/ Famous Men of the Santa Fe Trail By Colonel Henry Inman, 1897 https://www.legendsofamerica.com/we-santafetrailfamousmen/#tom-tobin
  • Lawmen: Bass Reeves — The Truth Behind the Show 17.06.2026 49นาที
In this episode, we’re breaking down Lawmen: Bass Reeves and comparing the TV series to the real history behind one of the most legendary lawmen of the American West.I really enjoyed the series. It was entertaining, well acted, beautifully shot, and had some incredible moments. If you’re wondering how much of it actually happened, the answer is: some of it did, a lot of it didn’t, and the real Bass Reeves, in my opinion, was even better. The show takes plenty of creative liberties, adds fictional characters, changes real events, and builds a dramatic storyline around Bass Reeves that often goes far beyond the historical record. That being said, the show was not trying to be a documentary, and there are several real events from Bass Reeves’ life woven throughout the series. In this episode, I’ll be breaking down what Lawmen: Bass Reeves got right, what it changed, what it left out, and what appears to be completely fictional. We’ll cover Bass Reeves’ Civil War years, his escape into Indian Territory, Judge Isaac C. Parker, Fort Smith, the outlaws he chased, the murder trial over the death of his cook, and the fictional storylines created for the show.If you want the full historical deep dive, check out my 8-part Bass Reeves series, where I cover his entire life from start to finish. All clips used in this video are from the Paramount+ television series Lawmen: Bass Reeves.#BassReeves #LawmenBassReeves #WildWest #WesternHistory #OldWest #TrueStory #ParamountPlus #Netflix #AmericanWest #historydeepdive 00:00 Intro01:55 Episode 113:32 Episode 217:03 Episode 322:25 Episode 428:27 Episode 533:15 Episode 637:40 Episode 742:57 Finale
  • Simon Kenton - Legendary Frontiersman 05.06.2026 39นาที
Simon Kenton is one of the great frontier names that deserves to be remembered far more than it is. Born in Virginia in 1755, Kenton was still a teenager when one violent moment changed the course of his life. Believing he had killed a man in a jealous fight, he fled west, took on the name Simon Butler, and stepped into the dangerous world of the early American frontier. What followed was one of the most remarkable lives of the frontier era. Kenton became a hunter, scout, spy, soldier, guide, and survivor. He served during Lord Dunmore’s War, helped defend Boonesborough, saved Daniel Boone’s life during a Shawnee attack, fought in the American Revolution, endured captivity and torture, ran the gauntlet multiple times, and came within moments of being burned alive. Later, he would fight through the Northwest Indian War, cross paths with Tecumseh, serve in the War of 1812, and live long enough to see the violent frontier of his youth become farms, towns, roads, and memory. And yet today, Simon Kenton is often overshadowed by men like Daniel Boone & Davy Crockett. In this episode, we dive into the life, legend, hardship, and legacy of Simon Kenton — the runaway boy who became one of the toughest and most respected frontiersmen of early America.A huge thank you to Jim Cornelius from the Frontier Partisans Podcast and Frontier Partisans website. • The Ward Party Massacre - 1854 22.05.2026 15นาที
On August 20, 1854, a small wagon train led by William Alexander Ward — often remembered simply as Alexander Ward — was nearing Fort Boise on the Oregon Trail when their journey came to a violent and horrifying end.The Ward Party had survived months on the trail, crossing dangerous country, enduring exhaustion, heat, hunger, river crossings, and the daily struggle of keeping people and animals alive. But near the Boise River, a stolen horse, a deadly confrontation, and a sudden attack turned one ordinary stop into one of the deadliest settler massacres in Oregon Trail history.By the time the violence ended, nearly the entire Ward Party was dead. Eighteen members of the wagon train were killed, along with one member of a rescue party, bringing the total death toll to 19. Only two young boys, William and Newton Ward, survived. In this episode of Wild West Deep Dives, we look at the Ward Party Massacre, also known as the Boise Massacre, and the larger story behind it: the growing tension along the Oregon Trail, the pressure placed on Native communities in the Snake River country, the thin and often conflicting historical record, the military retaliation that followed, and how this forgotten tragedy helped change the future of southern Idaho. This is the story of one of the Oregon Trail’s deadliest and most forgotten attacks.#WildWestDeepDives #OregonTrail #WardMassacre #BoiseMassacre #OldWest #WildWestHistory #AmericanWest #FrontierHistory #OregonTrailHistory #FortBoise #IdahoHistory #SnakeRiver #PioneerHistory #NativeAmericanHistory #westernhistory Sources for Episode;Fort Boise – (United States Army) Idaho State Historical SocietyHigh, Dave, and Daniel Newcomer. “The Ward Massacre.” https://theclio.com/entry/23713Gone Are the Immigrants and the Indians, And Over It Are Peaceful October Skies By Harold Rhodenbaugh The Idaho Statesman 20 October 1929 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-idaho-statesman-ward-massacre-pt-1/153115548/Gerald Baydo, “Overland from Missouri to Washington Territory in 1854,” Nebraska History 52 (1971): 65-87 http://www.nebraskahistory.org/publish/publicat/history/full-text/NH1971Overland.pdfThe Oregon Trail in Idaho Idaho State Historical Society https://history.idaho.gov/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/0050.pdfMemorial to 18-Massacred WARD PIONEERS in 1854. https://wardfamily.blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/WARD-PIONEERS-MASSACRED-in-1854-on-the-OREGON-TRAIL-compress.pdf
  • Was Henry Plummer Really the Outlaw Sheriff of Bannack? 13.05.2026 42นาที
Henry Plummer is one of the most controversial figures in Old West history. Was he really the Outlaw Sheriff of Bannack — a lawman secretly leading a gang of road agents, robbers, and killers across the Montana gold fields? Or was he a flawed but innocent man, hanged without a trial by the Montana Vigilantes during one of the most debated episodes of frontier justice? In this episode, we follow the life of Henry Plummer from his early years in Maine, to the California Gold Rush, Nevada City, Bannack, and the violent world of the 1860s mining camps. We examine the accusations that Plummer led the so-called "Innocents," a supposed gang of road agents connected to robberies, murders, stagecoach attacks, and disappearances around Bannack and Alder Gulch. But we also look at the other side — the lack of hard evidence, the questionable confessions, the vigilante accounts, and the possibility that Plummer was wrongly executed. This episode explores the full story of Henry Plummer, the Montana Vigilantes, Erastus “Red” Yager, George Ives, Boone Helm, Clubfoot George Lane, Buck Stinson, Ned Ray, and the violent struggle between law, crime, and vigilante justice in the American frontier. Was Henry Plummer truly a criminal mastermind, or did the vigilantes hang a sheriff and then write the story that made it justice?Comment below after watching: was Henry Plummer guilty, innocent, or somewhere in between? From the fragile peace created by the 1851 Fort Laramie Treaty, to the growing tensions along the Oregon Trail, to the deadly mix of arrogance, miscommunication, and a drunken interpreter that turned a minor dispute into a massacre. We dive deep into the lead-up, the confrontation with Conquering Bear, and the moment a single shot triggered a devastating chain of events. This isn’t just a battle story — it’s the spark that ignited the Sioux Wars and reshaped the American frontier. If you’re interested in real Old West history — the kind built on conflicting accounts, human error, and moments that changed everything — this is a story you don’t want to miss. #Grattanfight #Grattanmassacre #wildwesthistory #oldwesthistory #frontierhistory Sources for ResearchThe Grattan Fight: Prelude to a Generation of War By; Douglas R. • Augustine Chacón - The Truth Exposed 07.03.2026 21นาที
For more than a century, the name Augustine Chacón has been repeated in Old West history as one of the most feared outlaws of the Arizona Territory. Newspapers claimed he was a ruthless killer, a bandit leader, and a man responsible for dozens of murders across the borderlands. Some stories even claimed he bragged about killing thirty “gringos.” But when historians began digging into the records, the legend started to fall apart. In this episode of Wild West Deep Dives, we take a closer look at the real story behind the man the newspapers turned into a monster. From the robbery in Morenci and the death of Deputy Pablo Salcido, to Chacón’s dramatic jailbreak, years as a fugitive, and his eventual capture by Arizona Ranger Burt Mossman, this is the story as close as the historical record will allow.More importantly, this episode explores how frontier journalism, rumor, and racial prejudice helped transform a minor criminal into a legendary outlaw blamed for crimes he may never have committed. By returning to court records, contemporary reports, and the research of historian David Grassé, we separate the myth from the man and examine how the legend of Augustine Chacón was created. The result is one of the most fascinating frontier mysteries of the Old West — a case where the legend may be far bigger than the truth. If you enjoy deep historical research, forgotten stories of the frontier, gunfights, outlaws, massacres, and the real history behind the myths of the American West, make sure to subscribe to Wild West Deep Dives for more episodes like this one.Sources for Research;Roadside History of Arizona By; Marshall Trimble 1986https://historynet.com/augustine-chacon-book-review/ By; Jon Guttmanhttps://www.truewestmagazine.com/article/the-escape-of-augustine-chacon/The True Story of Notorious Arizona Outlaw, Augustine Chacón By David Grassé By far the most accurate, reliable sourceLink to David Grassé’s Shophttps://www.davidgrasse.com/shop
  • The Real Story of Beaver Dick Leigh 28.02.2026 15นาที
**Disclaimer** I believe I mispronounced Bannock, after further research, it seems to be pronounced 'Ban-uck', I will fix this mistake in the future and I apologize. Richard “Beaver Dick” Leigh was more than a mountain man — he was a living bridge between the fur trade era and the settled American West. Born in England in 1831, he crossed an ocean as a child, claimed to have served in the Mexican War, trapped the Tetons when the beaver trade was fading, and guided some of the most famous names of the 19th century — including Nathaniel Langford and Theodore Roosevelt — through the Yellowstone and Jackson Hole wilderness. Lakes in Grand Teton still carry his name, but the real story of Beaver Dick is far more complex than legend. In this episode of Wild West Deep Dives, we break down the conflicting accounts surrounding his early life, examine his own diary entries, explore his marriage into the Shoshone community, and confront the heartbreaking smallpox tragedy of 1876 that wiped out his first family in less than two weeks. We also trace his second marriage, his role in the Hayden Expedition that helped lead to Yellowstone National Park, and his final years along the Snake River in Idaho. This is not just a frontier survival story — it’s a deep historical dive into myth vs. memory, primary sources vs. regional lore, and what it truly meant to be called “the last of the mountain men.”Source for ResearchBeaver Dick Leigh, Mountain Man of the Tetons By Steve Roberts https://www.wyohistory.org/encyclopedia/beaver-dick-leigh-mountain-man-tetonsBeaver Dick Leigh By Teton Valley Magazine https://tetonvalleymagazine.com/departments/back-when/beaver-dick-leigh?srsltid=AfmBOopnDWFjRNZSONGDtNCN9zoFJmG2Jc7j2XMfiNQ0BfPON5OYvHubGet to know Idaho: Who was 'Beaver Dick' and why are there historical markers for him?
