John Urschel’s Unreasonable Goals: From the NFL to MIT 28.08.2026 33นาทีFormer NFL offensive lineman John Urschel fell in love with math before he fell in love with football. He pursued both fields with equal intensity. How he has succeeded in both (his mother played an important role) is an inspiring story - and as good a reason as any to bring back this 2015 conversation from the Wavemaker archives. But I’m revisiting it now because of a major new study out this week that concluded at least one of every four former NFL players has been afflicted with the degenerative brain disease CTE, which is caused by the cumulative force of repeated hits to the head. The risk of suffering brain damage from playing professional football was what led me to contact Urschel in the first place - and to learn why a person who aspired to be a leader in the field of math, would take such a risk. -
Sebastian Junger: Escape from the tyranny of self-interest 20.08.2026 45นาทีSebastian Junger and I discuss his search for purpose as a young man; his 1997 best-seller, The Perfect Storm, that put him on the map; his high risk years as a war reporter; the aneurism that nearly killed him; becoming a father late in life; and what he calls the “escape from the tyranny of self-interest.” A riveting and thought-provoking introduction to a journalist you’ll be seeing more of in his new role as a Contributor to 60 Minutes. Our conversation was recorded live at the 2023 Nantucket Book Festival (which just celebrated its 15th year!) -
Spencer Glendon: Our Probable Futures - part 2 12.08.2026 42นาทีFind part 1 of this conversation HERESpencer Glendon's work on climate change is driven by this question: How can we, together, "increase our chances that the future is good?"Glendon is answering that question through his nonprofit organization Probable Futures, which has created a suite of tools, including vivid interactive maps, that help us visualize climate change's evolving impacts - locally, regionally, and globally. Much of this episode requires watching the images as well as listening, so I hope you can watch the video of our conversation on Spotify, YouTube, or my website at wavemaker.meAnd please make sure to listen to the last 15 minutes in which Glendon opens up about the extreme health challenges he has faced since he was a high school student, and how he successfully increased the chances that his own future would be good. -
Spencer Glendon: Our Probable Futures - part 1 06.08.2026 49นาทีSpencer Glendon, one of the most brilliant guys I've ever heard speak, is the creator of Probable Futures, an ambitious project focused on what he calls climate literacy. I've brought back this conversation of ours from 2022 in light of the extreme wildfires and heat waves in Europe and the broader, continual flow of evidence that our climate has been dangerously destabilized. There are plenty of great climate experts. Why spend time listening to Spencer Glendon? For me, the answer begins with his riveting personal and professional journey in the decades before he started exploring climate change. That's what we focus on in this first of our two-part conversation. We'll take the deep dive into climate change in Part Two next week. -

Talk to Strangers (and other paths to wellness) 15.07.2026 40นาทีMichael delves into how the body, mind and spirit impact wellness with three featured guests at this summer’s Nantucket Wellness Festival. We can’t beat the guest introductions delivered by the Festival’s co-founder, Joann Burnham: Dr. Shieva Ghofrany, MD: “We knew we had to have a gorgeous goddess represented on the panel... goddess is a big word. So finding a science-based goddess was our mission. And we think Shiva Gofrani fits that bill. She's a board certified OBGYN who's been caring for women since 1999. She blends decades of clinical expertise along with a really deeply personal, empathetic approach to medicine. She has a private practice in Stamford, Connecticut. She also leads a telehealth practice dedicated to supporting women through midlife. Her ability to translate evidence-based OBGYN knowledge into real, relatable conversations has helped countless women feel seen, informed and motivated to advocate for their own wellbeing at every stage of their life.”Ben Rein, PhD:“Now when you get into this wellness thing, people always ask, is there any science behind it? So it was really important to me that we had a science guy. And Ben Rein is our science guy. He's an award-winning neuroscientist, author, science communicator. He's the chief science officer of the Mind Science Foundation, head of Science Communication and Research Hub Foundation. Is that enough science for you? He's an adjunct lecturer at Stanford University and a clinical assistant professor at SUNY Buffalo. He has published over 20 peer reviewed papers on neuroscience and his book is available throughout the weekend Why Brains Need Friends: The Neuroscience of Social Connection. Ben is also an overall great guy and he's a brand new dad.”Ian Lopatin:“Ian Lopatin is a visionary entrepreneur, author and frequency architect. He's best known as the founder of Course Sanctuary and Spiritual Gangster. Who has a spiritual gangster T-shirt? I do. He graduated from Vanderbilt University, UCLA Law School, and he's widely regarded as a bridge between business and spirituality. His core philosophy, My Frequency Creates My Reality. His first book, which we are so excited about... [is] called The Way of a Spiritual Gangster, and it will be released later this year. It's offering readers a roadmap to higher frequency living and purpose-driven success.” -
Timothy Snyder: On Tyranny & Freedom 09.07.2026 38นาทีTimothy Snyder is one of the world’s leading historians of fascism. His bestseller, On Tyranny, is a palm-sized North Star for democracy — featuring twenty lessons from the 20th century for how each of us can resist authoritarianism and protect our republic — all of which feel doable. He and I had this conversation in 2021. I am sharing it here now as we mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of independence. America, said Benjamin Franklin, is “a republic, if you can keep it.” Tim Snyder is a guide to keeping it. -
Liaquat Ahamed: Boom, Bubble, Bust 01.07.2026 44นาทีWhen it comes to the global economy — and its impact on politics and society — Liaquat Ahamed has an eagle eye for pattern recognition. Ahamed won a Pulitzer Prize for Lords of Finance: The Bankers Who Broke The World — his history of the Great Depression, and its aftermath. This past weekend, at the Nantucket Book Festival, he and I spoke about his newly released prequel, 1873, about the breathtaking first truly global economic boom, and bubble, and the bust that followed. We can’t know for sure if 1873 foreshadows what’s to come as a result of the tsunami of money chasing Artificial Intelligence. But if you want to develop that eagle eye for pattern recognition, while being entertained, I strongly recommend listening to our thoroughly improvisational conversation. Thanks to Nantucket Community TV — NCTV — for providing the video and audio of this and all the fascinating author events at the 2026 Nantucket Book Festival. -
What Moved Clive Davis 24.06.2026 28นาทีIn this conversation with legendary music executive Clive Davis, Michael tries to figure out how one man, with no musical background, managed to identify, shape and guide so many stars in so many different genres over half a century. Davis died this week at the age of 94. What did he experience that drove him? What did he hear that moved him? Michael and Clive share a lot of laughs and insights exploring those questions together in this 2013 conversation for the radio program CNN Profiles. -
Liaquat Ahamed: 1873 & 2026 - a short preview 10.06.2026 9นาทีLiaquat Ahamed, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his history of the Great Depression is out with a prequel called 1873, the story of the breathtaking, first, truly global economic boom, and the bust that followed. I'll be in conversation with Ahamed at The Nantucket Book Festival on June 14th. I reached out to him now for a brief chat, because a lot of educated readers are wondering - is 1873 a preview of what's to come? -
Robert Malley live in conversation at the Dreamland Theatre 03.06.2026 1ชม. 17นาทีRobert Malley is a veteran U.S. Middle East peace negotiator, and, as I’ve come to learn, an inspired and devoted teacher. He has participated in multiple U.S.-brokered Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. He was on the team that negotiated the Iran nuclear inspection deal in 2015, and more recently served as U.S. Special Envoy to Iran. Under President Obama, he also served as the White House point person in the campaign against the Islamic State. Malley is now a Senior Fellow and lecturer at Yale University’s Jackson Institute for Global Affairs. There have been so many major developments in the Middle East since we had this conversation last August before a live audience at Nantucket’s Dreamland Theatre. But the stories and insights that Malley shared, are as timely and compelling as ever. -
Min Jin Lee: Time Is Our Teacher 23.05.2026 16นาทีI’m always on the lookout for an inspiring graduation speech. Last weekend, at Yale College, I heard one that I can’t stop thinking about. Min Jin Lee, the Korean-American author of Pachinko, a Yale graduate who, as a student, had far more B’s than A’s, channeled the ancient Greeks, and her own struggles, including a terrifying battle with liver disease, to help us figure out how to “choose the important over the urgent.” Her speech was about an hour. I recommend listening to every minute of it on the Yale youtube channel. But for those of you who are pressed for time right now, I’m offering a couple of key excerpts. It’s not a Wavemaker Conversation. It’s an empowering conversation starter. -
Laura Galante: Cyber Attackers v Cyber Defenders 13.05.2026 51นาทีAI is shifting the ground beneath us in many fields. When the ground shifts in the world of cyber security, Laura Galante is a great person to have on your side. Galante served as the U.S. government’s Director of the Cyber Threat Intelligence Integration Center from 2022 to 2025. She has represented the cyber intelligence community in dozens of White House Situation Room meetings. I reached out to her soon after Anthropic announced that it had created a powerful new AI model, or bot – too powerful to release to the public – called Claude Mythos Preview. Anthropic says that its new bot discovered vulnerabilities in every major computer operating system and web browser – vulnerabilities it was able to exploit. Which makes this an important time to speak with Laura Galante. -
Random Encounters: feat. Nurse Betty 10.04.2026 7นาทีSometimes my favorite conversations are the ones I never expected to have – encounters made possible by serendipity.I didn’t expect to meet my featured guest, Nurse Betty Long – at least not on this day. But when she appeared, and we started talking, I suspected that because of the difficult work she does – doing street medicine in a mobile van – and because of the humor she brings to it, we would arrive at a place where curiosity meets hope.To follow my conversations with preeminent authors, inspiring leaders and simply fascinating people in a wide variety of fields – as well as my uplifting, surprising and even soul-satisfying random encounters, please subscribe to my Substack newsletter here. -
Azar Nafisi: Reclaiming Iran's Identity 07.03.2026 1ชม. 18นาทีAzar Nafisi, author of the internationally acclaimed memoir Reading Lolita in Tehran, addresses the question: Where do Iranians who have stood up to their ruthless government get their courage?I reached out to Nafisi following Iran’s traditional 40-day mourning period for the thousands of people killed by the ruling clerics’ enforcers during nationwide demonstrations against the regime. It seemed incredible that on the 40th day – after seeing the regime’s use of widespread violence – Iranians would come out yet again. I wanted to know – is there something about that 40-day tradition, that generates courage?Nafisi grew up in Iran’s capital, studied in the U.S. in the 1970s, and returned to her homeland after the revolution – for 18 years – to teach western literature to Iranian college students. Her insights on courage come from her personal experience and from a deep understanding of Iranian and Persian history and culture. We had this conversation three days before the war began. Nafisi’s insights will be highly relevant for a long time to come. -
The Olympian In You: maximizing performance under pressure - feat. Noa Kageyama 18.02.2026 35นาทีWhen American figure skating phenom and gold medal favorite Ilia Malinin imploded on the ice at this Winter Olympics, I wanted to discover what we could all learn — and possibly apply to our own lives — from that heartbreaking failure. So I called Noa Kageyama — a veteran performance psychologist on the faculty of the Juilliard School and Cleveland Institute of Music. Why reach out to someone who works with musicians for insights on athletic performance? Because, as you’ll learn in this conversation, the mental training needed to maximize your performance on any stage, or field, or class, or boardroom, have certain things in common — techniques that we can all benefit from when we’re aiming to do our best when it matters most. For more fascinating insights from Noa Kageyama head over to https://bulletproofmusician.com -

Julie Ioffe live in conversation at the Dreamland Theatre 22.01.2026 1ชม. 11นาที35 years ago, Julia Ioffe and her family arrived in the U.S. as refugees from the former Soviet Union, having fled their homeland upon rumors of a planned pogrom against the Jews of Moscow. Julia was only seven. Today, Julia Ioffe — a happy American accident, as she has called her life — has become a go-to journalist for her singular insights on Vladimir Putin and Russia and her reporting on the war in Ukraine and U.S. national security policy. In this conversation with Puck News correspondent Julia Ioffe, recorded August 9, 2024 live at Nantucket’s Dreamland Theatre, we discuss: Ukraine’s surprise offensive inside Russia; Putin’s grip on power — and what it would take to loosen it; Ioffe’s deep dive into Putin’s childhood; the enduring impact of Stalin’s Great Terror on the Russian psyche; Ioffe’s reflections on Alexey Navalny; a show & tell analysis of Putin, on camera, demanding obedience from his top aides; how to curse like a Russian; and, two months before she gave birth to her first child, what Julia Ioffe will tell her son about the world he is entering.
