Can feeding wild birds really make you happier? 22.09.2026 6dkNew peer-reviewed research published in Ambio studied 3,658 adults participating in Project FeederWatch across the United States and Canada. After a six-month bird-feeding season, approximately 95% reported that feeding and watching birds had positively affected their wellbeing. Participants described experiences including joy, gratitude, hope, calm, curiosity, connection with nature and a sense of meaning. The finding doesn't mean bird feeding is a treatment for stress, anxiety or burnout. Researchers could not establish that feeding birds actually caused improvements in mental health, and the average change measured using a formal wellbeing questionnaire was small. What the study does reveal is how positively many participants experienced this regular interaction with wildlife.Liezel van der Westhuizen explores why the finding matters beyond birdwatching. In lives increasingly dominated by screens, notifications, deadlines and constant demands on our attention, deliberately noticing the natural world may provide a valuable interruption to autopilot. And you don't need to buy a feeder or have a large garden to try it. A balcony, park, neighbourhood walk or even a window can become an opportunity to stop for five minutes and notice movement, birdsong, colour and behaviour around you. There is also an important environmental responsibility. Bird feeders can create risks for wildlife if they're poorly managed, including disease transmission and increased exposure to predators and window collisions. Responsible interaction with wildlife means considering the birds' wellbeing alongside our own.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. -

Fitness: How Gauteng cyclists turned Pedal Power into opportunity 21.09.2026 10dkMost cyclists enter a race thinking about the challenge ahead: the training, the distance, the climbs and eventually the finish line. But what if that race entry could travel much further than the cyclist ever imagined? A Gauteng cycling initiative linked to the Cape Town Cycle Tour has turned participation into tangible community impact, with more than 200 brand-new bicycles being handed to learners and young people.Approximately R1.5 million generated through Gauteng cyclists participating in the Cape Town Cycle Tour has helped deliver more than 200 bicycles to young people in under-resourced Gauteng communities through a partnership involving the Pedal Power Association, Cape Town Cycle Tour and Primedia Cares. Fitness presenter, wellness correspondent, burnout and mental fitness coach Liezel van der Westhuizen joins Africa Melane on CapeTalk and Talk Radio 702 to discuss why this story reaches far beyond cycling. From reducing the burden of lengthy journeys and improving mobility to giving young people greater independence and access to opportunity, Liezel examines how something as simple as two wheels can potentially change the rhythm of a young person's day. The conversation also explores the extraordinary ripple effect of community sport: how an individual fitness challenge can become collective action, why Gauteng cyclists are an important part of the Cape Town Cycle Tour community, and how the 2027 initiative hopes to put even more bicycles into the hands of schools and youth organisations. Because sometimes the most important part of a race is not where your finish line is. It is where your participation allows somebody else's journey to begin.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. -
